WHAT YOU MISSED

Beyond Fear. Pushing Past Impossible

We had the privilege of hearing from Ryan Stramrood, and it’s one of those talks that stays with you.

Ryan didn’t set out to be a speaker. He’s a businessman first. But through a simple passion for swimming, he’s gone on to do things most people would call impossible.

147 crossings from Cape Town to Robben Island, in cold, unforgiving water, just as “training”.

Founder of the International Ice Swimming Association.

Three Guinness World Records.

And the first person to swim a mile in Antarctic water at minus 1°C.

What stood out wasn’t the achievements. It was the mindset behind them.

He was clear, this is not a story of success or failure. It’s about pushing past what you think is possible.

Sitting there, you realise the limits we feel are rarely physical. They’re in the mind. The body follows.

His simple message landed hard:

When things get tough, your brain will tell you to stop long before you actually need to.

That’s where the shift happens.

Stay calm. Stay present. Keep moving forward.

It’s the same in business, in sport, in life.

We’re all capable of far more than we give ourselves credit for.

Good reminder this week, especially with everything moving fast around us.

Lean in a little more than feels comfortable.

Deepening Connections with Spouse with Robyn Smith

I recently attended a short but powerful session on intimacy with Robyn Smith from Cape Town. It was a timely reminder of a challenge many modern couples face—not a lack of love, but a lack of intention.

Between work, children, and the constant mental load, “us” often gets deprioritised.

A few insights that stayed with me:

Protect the relationship with a shared principle— something you both come back to when life gets busy.

Be intentional about going “off duty.” Especially for women, creating space is essential for connection.

Turn towards small bids for connection. The little moments matter more than we think.

Transitions are powerful. How you greet each other—especially the first few seconds—can set the tone.

Stay curious. Your partner is always evolving.

Play to strengths, not strict equality.

Acknowledging the division of labour reduces silent tension.

Keep “us” separate from everything else— especially the children.

The biggest takeaway? Intimacy isn’t built in grand gestures, but in small, consistent, intentional moments.

Because strong relationships don’t just happen— they are protected.

Friday Shot EO Journeys

Florian Keller

Enchanting Travels / Tourism

Looking back, how would you describe your journey in EO so far?

In the early years, EO and particularly my forum has been a “life saver” for me. I went through a very turbulent phase in my private life, and my forum stood by me and helped me to get through this very difficult time. More recently, my forum buddies walked with me on the joyful journey as I got married and started my own family. I am deeply grateful for everyone in my forum who has walked with me over the last more than 7 years.

What would you tell a longstanding EO member who has never attended one?

In my experience the EO experience is incomplete without this.

When did you join EO, and what stage of life or business were you in at the time?

I joined EO in 2018. At that time, I was a “young” dad and - 12 years into my entrepreneurial journeywas actively pursuing an exit which was successfully concluded in early 2019. Thus, ironically, my own entrepreneurial journey came to at least a preliminary closure just after joining EO.

What has been the single biggest value EO has brought into your life?

As mentioned above, my forum has been a rock in my life. I particularly value the blind spots that I have become aware of through many conversations and deep dives. This has made me become a more self reflective and more balanced person.

What first encouraged you to attend your first international learning event?

I haven’t attended any international learning events

Shot

In one or two sentences, what does EO mean to you today?

EO and particularly my forum feels like a safety net in my life, yet one that challenges me to become a better version of myself.

What would you encourage members to do more of within EO?

Spend time and listen to every EO member you meet and understand their story

How can members make the most of everything EO has to offer?

Be vulnerable and yourself

Carpe Diem ... Seize the day! Any final message you’d like to share with the EO Kenya community?
