ecently, I scheduled a full week off work and took a true vacation. It had been a couple of years since I’d totally “unplugged,” so I set out on a real adventure hiking the Grand Canyon from rim to rim. This time away challenged me, both mentally and physically, and helped me learn a few new things about myself. It also gave me time to enjoy nature and get a fresh perspective on how I regularly spend my days. A vacation can lead to some pretty deep soul searching and potentially help you find some balance between your career and personal life. It can give you a chance to consider what is most important. I believe in working hard, but I came back from my vacation rejuvinated, refreshed and feeling more productive. If you cannot imagine taking a week off work or away from your buisness, I urge you to consider taking at least a couple of days where you are not running errands or shopping or searching the Internet. Sometimes a new challenge can freshen the way you see things. I hope you can create the opportunity to give yourself the gift of some time off this summer. It really can make a difference.

ne of the characteristics of project teams is that they bring together a diversity of experiences, personal backgrounds, work styles, personalities, and cultural perspectives. The purpose of this segment is to provide some guidelines that: · acknowledge and respond to diversity within the project team, · facilitate the support and management of diversity to enable all members of the project team to achieve their potential, · ensure that each member of the team has the maximum opportunity to contribute to the project.

Within a diverse team, there is a clear risk of misinterpreting one another for many reasons, including: · differing language and jargon, · differing values and life styles, · lack of understanding about other cultures. To manage diversity effectively, it is important to invest time, effort, and conscious thought in: · understanding diversity, · avoiding stereotyping and prejudice, · recognizing and avoiding exclusion activities.

Rather than “simplifying” things by categorization, a better approach is to describe people using more detail rather than less. Most of what defines us as individuals exists below the surface. Even within the same family, children can be very different. By looking for more detail, it is possible to find additional qualities that can be appreciated. The key to success is to encourage more direct and visible support by co-workers and management for an environment that welcomes curiosity about others. Avoiding Stereotyping and Prejudice

A natural human tendency is to categorize things. However, when we categorize people into identifiable groups, such as “caucasians,” “gays,” or “handicapped,” based on what is (or appears to be) readily visible, the tendency is to then fill in other erroneous information about that person based on the groups that we have identified the person with. This form of prejudice is not limited to the ways that we think about other people. Very often, one of the most painful forms of prejudice is when a person feels a lessening in self-worth, because he or she has internalized what other people have said about the groups that he or she identifies with.

Understanding Diversity

Diversity is not something that is defined by race, gender, or disability. Diversity includes race, gender, age, marital status, personal and work background and experience, education, personality, lifestyle, sexual preference, physical ability, native language, national origin, role and tenure in the organization, values, and world views. More and more the workplace is recognizing that diversity contributes to better decision-making and increases the potential for innovation and excellence. The need is to value all differences and cultivate a climate where people are appreciated for being different, and everyone is encouraged to be conscious of and responsive to a wide range of differences.

Interview Tip #1:

Interview for As Many Jobs As You Can

L Search out and value differences, so that misunderstandings and misinterpretations are less likely to occur. other person is and what he or she wants. The more relevant information you know about someone, the better you can understand that person, and the easier it will be to work with that person. For example, if someone is reacting badly to a business situation, it could be because something distressing is happening in that person’s private life that is temporarily affecting work performance. Search out and value differences, so that misunderstandings and misinterpretations are less likely to occur. Try to avoid situations where any person feels that his or her unique set of characteristics, and beliefs about work styles, is the one and only appropriate way to behave.

Avoiding Exclusion Activities

There are many ways in which groups are created that exclude others, either consciously or unconsciously (out of habit). Examples of exclusion activities include: · going out for a drink after work, or organizing a golf game, where some individuals within the team may feel awkward or uncomfortable,

·

·

in a group of predominantly men (or women), doing things as a group and assuming that a solitary member of the other sex would not want to join in (effectively giving the appearance of either a men's or women's club that excludes members of the opposite sex), arranging work group events on religious holy days of minority individuals, or holding a Christmas dinner dance.

It is important to think through such activities not only from your own perspective, but also from the perspective of the other people in the team with whom you interact. The tendency to include or exclude others is often almost automatic. Breaking such habits takes thought, time and effort. Article first appeared at www.toolbox.com, where you can get valuable business and technical advice from people who do the work every day.

et’s assume you have focused your search on certain types of jobs and types of employers. You have developed a preferred list of both. You have scanned the horizon, conducted research, compiled your questions, and engaged your network for assistance. Your resume is in order.

So why you should interview as much as possible?

1. You need the practice. Some of you have not interviewed for a while. You need to refine your story and you can only do that through practice. That means interviewing as much as you can. 2. Interviewing will refine your job search. By getting out there and interviewing, you’ll learn about new trends, positions, and opportunities, your perspective will shift, and you’ll see new paths that you were previously unaware of. 3. Interviewing will make your network stronger. As you engage your network for interview referrals and recommendations, you will not only strengthen existing connections, but you’ll meet new people who are connected to your network. 4. Interviewing may lead to unexpected opportunities. If you have the skills and impress in the interview, that carries weight in the organization. Employers want to place good people and may even refer you to opportunities outside of the firm.

Go Green with Your Career Search

n April 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin launched Earth Day. It evolved after seven years of observation, discussion and planning to bring the environment into the “limelight.” Today, I’m buying bottled water and see our air, ground water, soil, oceans and glaciers under siege. As we hear more about Going Green to save the planet, what can we do to Green our Career? Just like the environment, we cannot take anything for granted in today’s workplace. Keeping our career path intentional and updated is necessary for career survival and redesign. In honor of Earth Day, here are some ways to Green Your Career: Sustainability: It’s can be tough to stay motivated in a career search, but to persevere and stay intentional with your search are necessary. Be the glacier, but resist having a “meltdown!” Remember, looking for work is work. Review your habits and eat healthy, go for a walk, get fresh air, join a job network group, hire a coach, etc. It’s about survival, and you can do it. Remember, Darwin’s Survival of the Fittest? The village blacksmith will not return and neither will hand milking or the keypunch operator. You have to move on, retool and renew. That means an investment in you and that means time and commitment. Recycle - Reuse - Renew: When did you update your resume? Did you ever attend a professional development workshop or use a career tool that identified your strengths, interests or leadership style? I have talked with many clients who discounted this kind of experience and shoved the results in the back of the file cabinet. In good times, we tend to think, that’s nice, so what! Dig out the results and reread them. The results could be insightful. Even if the resume or a performance evaluation is 5-10 years old, it can be a springboard. Dig it out, dust it off and remember who you were. It can provide direction as you ask, who am I today? Reflect, regroup, react. Just like paper or plastic, we can be “reused.” Besides, it’s spring

and it might be time to spring clean your files and get reorganized. Preserve: How can you preserve your identity and integrity? Some traits are timeless! It is important to “know thyself.” Some workers think, it’s over, I’m outdated, too old, too inexperienced, washed up. Hold on! A solid work ethic, good work record, willing to learn and retrain still mean something in today’s workplace. We are not “throw-aways” waiting for the landfill. You are a valued entity in today’s workplace, so market yourself, get grounded and persevere. Now more than ever, tough times call for a tougher, creative approach for your search. Save Energy: Like the new energy-saving light bulbs, they cost more, but save money and energy in the long run. How about you? Can you save an employer money and energy in the long run? Are you a good investment? Can you glow brightly and provide long-lasting productivity? Think about the value you bring to the workplace. Increase Efficiency: In your work search, work smarter and be efficient. Focus your job search, schedule your calls and keep accurate records of your applications, follow-ups and responses. To stay efficient, you need a plan and a schedule for your workweek. A “hit or miss” philosophy or “when I feel like it” attitude will not serve you. For more efficiency, get involved with social networking. Create a profile on LinkedIn, Jobster, Facebook. Get curious about Twitter. Start a blog. There are many options to explore. Google yourself. Did you show up? Today’s job search requires positive visibility. Keeping your career path green means you are aware, enlightened and alive. Spring is a season of renewal. The workplace is dynamic and your career path and credentials need to be dynamic too.

In the World of Possibilities, New Members Are Always Welcome

t may surprise you to know that none of my long-time friends are what I (or they) would consider entrepreneurs. Several are solo practitioners – therapists, coaches, massage therapists and the like. But getting paid “dollars for hours” as they say is very different from turning your creativity into a steady flow of income-generating possibilities. Last weekend I hosted a small dinner party. Over drinks I mentioned that International Living magazine asked me to speak this fall in Panama at a conference for people who want to live and work overseas. Just as we were sitting down for dinner, my dog Cokie reminded me it was time for his supper too. As I mixed up a concoction of chicken, sweet potato, and dry food I reminisced about this delightful woman I’d just met in Paris who makes her living as a professional dog chef. My guests were especially fascinated to learn that she and her husband run a dog diner in the Arizona desert and that one of her biggest income streams is from speaking engagements (you’ll be hearing more about her soon.) After dessert I pulled out a fresh tube of Chicken Poop Lip Junk to sooth my chronically dry lips. You can’t very well pull out Chicken Poop without telling the story of how product creator Jamie Tabor Schmidt (and recent Fast Track Teleclass guest speaker) of ILoveChickenPoop. com managed to get her product into a huge national chain like Walgreen’s. It was at that point that my friend Joanne put her fork down, pushed back her chair, and exclaimed, “Wow, you live in this total other world, don’t you?” I honestly didn’t know what she was talking about. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Well, you just got back from reviewing a photography course in Paris. You’re speaking in Panama. You meet these fascinating people that no one else ever seems to meet. It’s like you exist on a planet all your own.” As I looked around the table at my guests – a district court judge, the training director at a university, a clinical social worker, and a college professor – I realized that I may not live on a different planet, but in a lot of ways I do inhabit

a very different world. It’s a place I’ve come to think of as the World of Possibilities.

Life in the Real World

Sadly, most people operate in a world they proudly refer to as the Real World. You can always tell when you’ve met someone who has never lived in – never mind entertained – the World of Possibilities. All you have to do is start talking about your life-long love of anything lavender and how you’ve been thinking of how you would absolutely love to move to the country and start a lavender farm, or create a sense of community among the hundreds of existing lavender farm owners, or run trips to the heart of the lavender industry in Provence, France. The first thing you’ll notice is that they look at you like, well, like you’re from another planet. Next they are quick to recite with great certainty all of the reasons why your ideas are completely unrealistic. After all, having never started a business and knowing absolutely nothing about lavender farms, being from the Real World they are, nonetheless, authorities on what is and isn’t possible. And to underscore your other world status they will flatly tell you that you just aren’t operating in the Real World, which is actually a very lucky thing. Because when dwelling in the World of Possibilities you know these things are doable for one simple reason - people are doing them!

Take Me to Your Leader... Hurry!

There is of course, no “leader” of the World of Possibilities but fortunately we have very wise friend who is all too eager to disperse accurate information whenever we ask. It’s called the Internet. It took just a few key strokes to learn, for example, that there are literally hundreds of viable farms and lavender related businesses all over the world – many in the U.S. and Canada. I also learned that the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service(NSAIS) has TONS of information in both English and Spanish including a list of government grants to help small farmers. Want to join the American or Canadian Lavender Growers Association? I bet a lot of other people would too. The problem is that while you can join the Australian Lavender

Joining Forces Mentoring Plus enables mentors and mentees to work together to design and develop individualized and quantifiable goals and benchmarks for mentee employment plans. Online resources and subject matter experts will assist mentees in areas that affect workplace attainment, adjustment, retention and/ or supplier chain participation for small businesses. This deployment of the program will focus on an initial group of 1,000 mentees, and then broaden to benefit a larger group of 10,000 women veterans and military spouses. Ultimately, additional public and private workforce partners will be engaged to achieve a target of 100,000 mentoring relationships. More than 150,000 women are projected to leave the military over the next five years joining the more than 1.8 million existing women veterans. “We are determined and honored to help our women veterans meet their post-military service employment goals by applying their exceptional skills and military achievements to their future success in the civilian work world.” said Dr. Lynda Davis, Chair of the Joining Forces Mentoring Plus Advisory Council. “The program will also help overcome the challenges of base living and frequent moves that military wives often face by connecting them to training and employment opportunities that match their abilities, interests and education level.” Joining Forces Mentoring Plus builds upon the research and experience of proven mentoring programs that have measurably impacted many individuals’ lives. veterans of all eras and military wives with volunteer working women mentors across the U.S., whose personal and professional training has prepared them to provide insights, advice and encouragement to help women veterans and military wives. Working in tandem, volunteer mentors will help steer their mentees on individualized courses of action to succeed in the civilian workplace. While the national program has just been launched, a USO grant funded a successful six-month pilot effort for women veterans in Virginia during the second half of 2011.

“Mentoring is a two way street . . .The benefits to mentees are easy to see, but recent research shows that mentors reap rewards, as well”. “This program really does work. I don’t know where I would be without the help of my dedicated BPW mentor,” said Carolyn Allen, a veteran who retired from the Army after 20 years of service. I am now looking forward to passing the torch and stepping up as a mentor for other women veterans.” As the first organization to conduct research about working women, BPW Foundation attributes much of its success to programs built upon evidenced-based research. Joining Forces Mentoring Plus is the result of a commitment BPW Foundation made in 2005 to better understand the employment transition of women veterans. Research identified unique challenges that hinder the successful re-entry of women veterans upon their return home, including limited access to benefits and services they have earned and deserve. BPW Foundation’s research highlighted translation and portability of skills as major obstacles and underscored an overwhelming gap in career and employment support that this growing population of military women need upon their return to civilian life. Mentoring Plus was developed following the October, 2010 Joining Forces for Women Veterans Summit, which brought together government, nonprofit and business leaders, and women veterans to examine and seek solutions for the challenges facing our women veterans. The group recognized a broad-based need for informed, committed mentors to position and assist women veterans as they search for new employment, hone their career goals and package their military skills and experience to gain access to meaningful civilian jobs. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden highlighted this “mentorship gap” when they applauded BPW Foundation’s mentoring initiative as part of the White House’s national Joining Forces effort. ůĞĂĚĞƌ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ŽĸĐĞ ĨƵƌŶŝƚƵƌĞ ŝŶĚƵƐƚƌLJ͘ EĂƟŽŶǁŝĚĞ ĐĂƌĞĞƌ ŽƉƉŽƌƚƵŶŝƟĞƐ͘ ^ĞĞ ŽƵƌ ĐĂƌĞĞƌ ŽƉƉŽƌƚƵŶŝƟĞƐ Ăƚ ǁǁǁ͘ŚŶŝĐĂƌĞĞƌƐ͘ĐŽŵ ĂŶĚ ůŝƐƚĞĚ ǁŝƚŚ ůŽĐĂů ĞŵƉůŽLJŵĞŶƚ ĂŐĞŶĐŝĞƐ͘ Ɛ ĸƌŵĂƟǀĞ ĐƟŽŶͬ ƋƵĂů KƉƉŽƌƚƵŶŝƚLJ ŵƉůŽLJĞƌƐ͕ ƚŚĞ ŽƉĞƌĂƟŶŐ ĐŽŵƉĂŶŝĞƐ ŽĨ ,E/ ŽƌƉŽƌĂƟŽŶ ƐƵƉƉŽƌƚ ƚŚĞ ĂĚǀĂŶĐĞŵĞŶƚ ŽĨ Ăůů ƉĞŽƉůĞ ďĂƐĞĚ ŽŶ ƚŚĞŝƌ ƋƵĂůŝĮĐĂƟŽŶƐ ĂŶĚ ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞ ǁŝƚŚŽƵƚ ƌĞŐĂƌĚ ƚŽ ƌĂĐĞ͕ ĐŽůŽƌ͕ ĐƌĞĞĚ͕ƌĞůŝŐŝŽŶ͕ ŐĞŶĚĞƌ͕ ĂŐĞ͕ ŶĂƟŽŶĂů ŽƌŝŐŝŶ͕ ŵĂƌŝƚĂů ƐƚĂƚƵƐ͕ǀĞƚĞƌĂŶ ƐƚĂƚƵƐ͕ ĐŝƟnjĞŶƐŚŝƉ ƐƚĂƚƵƐ͕ ĚŝƐĂďŝůŝƚLJ͕ ƐĞdžƵĂů ŽƌŝĞŶƚĂƟŽŶ͕ ŐĞŶĞƟĐ ŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶ Žƌ ĂŶLJ ŽƚŚĞƌ ƐƚĂƚƵƐ ƉƌŽƚĞĐƚĞĚ ďLJ ůĂǁ͘

Successful Businesses are Built Around Good Customer Service

G

ood customer service can turn a start-up retail into a booming business, with a client base that grows exponentially. Contrarily, bad customer service can harm a business to the point of bankruptcy. Modern POS (point-of-sale) systems will usually include features to help accommodate the sales related needs of your customers. A well-designed POS system should provide easy functions for returns, replacements, layaways and more. Customer service done properly will always increase your the size of your customer base. A government funded study revealed two important facts about customer service: The average customer with a complaint tells 9-10 people about it. Customers whose complaints were addressed and resolved, told at least five people about the positive experience. It does not take a mathematician to see the enormous impact customer service has on a business. Consider if five customers have a positive experience in a retail store in one day. They each tell five friends about their experience who also come into the store, are greeted with a smile and helped above their expectations and then tell five friends about the store. From five customers, this store now has 125 loyal customers and continues to grow. At TopTenREVIEWS We Do the Research So You Don’t Have To.™ Having first-class customer service is a relatively inexpensive investment in your business. Keep Promises

Do not make promises you are unable to keep. If you tell a customer a product will be delivered at 2:30 on Monday, make sure it is done. Reliability makes a big difference to most customers.

Know Your Products and Policies

Make sure that everyone helping the customers are educated on the products or services you sell and on the store policies as well. The only thing worse than not knowing the answer is misguiding your customers on their purchases.

Be Helpful Even if There is no Immediate Profit

Let us pretend that you go into a ski shop to purchase a replacement part for a binding. The shop does not sell the replacement but happens to have one in a bin of mismatched parts. When you ask how much they want for it, the clerk replies “Don’t worry about it.” The shop does not make any money that day off you, but do think you will go back in the future?—we would.

Keep Accurate Records Readily Available

Good records are critical when accessing return policies, warranties and customer’s past transactions. They also come in handy when trying to remember names and past interactions. A good point of sale system can store all of this information and you can access it at the click of a mouse.

Give More Than Is Expected

A customer should always feel as if they received more than they expected. Even if all they received was a smile and a “have a nice day,” a note thanking them for their business or a phone call to ensure the car was fixed properly.

Build a Relationship With Your Customers

A well-known jeweler uses the slogan, “Now you have a friend in the diamond business.” Would not it be nice if your customers felt like they were buying from a trusted friend versus just another store?

Address Complaints

Good records are critical when accessing return policies, warranties and customer’s past transactions.

Address complaints quickly and to the customer’s satisfaction. Keep in mind that arguing with a customer over $5 may cost $100s of dollars worth of future sales.

BUILD YOUR FUTURE WITH US

Listen to your customers so they do not have to explain their problem more than once. Additionally, read emails thoroughly before sending a generic response that does not fully address the issue.

Start Sooner Rather Than Later

We value teamwork, integrity and each individual.

It is much easier to start good customer service practices while your business is still small rather than trying to change years of bad habits. Integrate the small details that make a big difference into your business’ customer service plan. Walt Disney, the founder of one the world’s most successful businesses known for its customer service, kept this in mind when he said, ”I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse.”

The Job Seeker’s Dilemma:

Is it time to change career direction?

T

by Markell R. Steele

oday’s job market is tough. Millions of people are looking for jobs for the first time in years. They’re looking for jobs that don’t seem to exist. Recruiters don’t return phone calls. Job seekers are fed up and frustrated. They wonder if all the effort is ever going to pay off and if it’s time to change careers. You might be wondering the same thing. But, it seems so risky in this economy. If you are experiencing these feelings, it might be time for a career change: • You’ve always been interested in other career areas but went with the “safe” route and now you feel burned out • You don’t enjoy your work anymore and you wonder what other options are out there for you • You feel stuck and stagnant • You are finding fewer and fewer jobs available in your industry • You’re over-qualified for the jobs that are available in your industry • You feel the effort to get a new job in your industry is more than you want to undertake

How do you know if now is a good time to change career direction?

The reality is that job loss and job creation are natural components of the world of work. It happens all the time to varying degrees. So there probably isn’t one perfect time to change jobs or careers. The decision depends a lot on your personal situation. Before launching a job search or career change, though, there are several important steps to take which I also outline in my career guide and audio program, Fast Track Your Career: Three Steps for Finding Work You Love.

Gaining Personal Insight

A critical mistake in making a career change is making the leap without getting enough career information. By exploring career possibilities you’ll be able to identify options that are best suited to your personal attributes and preferences.

Before you change careers, you need to figure out what you want. By assessing your current situation you can determine what you need in your career to be satisfied. Analyze your values, skills, personality characteristics, interests, and lifestyle preferences. It’s also useful to take inventory of your financial situation, especially if the career you’re considering might require additional education and training or relocation.

Getting a Reality Check

A critical mistake in making a career change is making the leap without getting enough career information. By exploring career possibilities you’ll be able to identify options that are best suited to your personal attributes and preferences. There are online and print resources you can use to learn about job outlooks and industry trends. The people in your network can also be great sources for information about trends and opportunities in various career fields. In addition, they can make introductions and give you referrals.

Charting Your Career Path

After you’ve done some self-assessment to learn what you want in a career and done career research to generate options, you have to make a decision about next steps. Your transition and job search plans will guide you to successfully getting the job you want and expanding your professional network. You’ll also need to update your resume, cover letter, and other support materials and fine-tune your interviewing and networking skills. People change jobs or careers in search of greater satisfaction. By following the steps outlined above, you will increase your chances for finding a career that better suits your personal goals and uses your talents in meaningful ways. To learn more about the “Fast Track Your Career” Process, you can download a free audio program here: http://tinyurl.com/lh7bps If you’re thinking about a career change, purchase the The Fast Track Your Career: Three Steps for Finding Work You Love career guide and audio program today. You will go through a step-by-step exploration and planning process by completing several exercises, so you can get clear about your career direction.

What Marine Engineers and Naval Architects Do

M

arine engineers and naval architects design, build, and maintain ships from aircraft carriers to submarines, from sailboats to tankers. Marine engineers work on the mechanical systems, such as propulsion and steering. Naval architects work on the basic design, including the form and stability of hulls. Marine engineers typically do the following: • Prepare system layouts and detailed drawings and schematics. • Inspect marine equipment and machinery to draw up work requests and job specifications. • Conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine machinery and equipment. • Design and oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus and equipment. • Investigate and observe tests on machinery and equipment for compliance with standards. • Coordinate activities with regulatory bodies to ensure that repairs and alterations are done safely and at minimal cost. • Prepare technical reports for use by engineers, managers, or sales personnel. • Prepare cost estimates, schedules for design and construction, and contract specifications. • Maintain contact with contractors to be sure the work is being done correctly . on schedule, and within budget. Naval architects typically do the following: • Study design proposals and specifications to establish basic characteristics of a ship, such as size, weight, and speed. • Develop sectional and waterline curves of the hull to establish the center of gravity, ideal hull form, and data on buoyancy and stability. • Design entire ship hulls and superstructures, following safety standards. • Design the layout of ships’ interiors, including passenger compartments, cargo space, ladder wells, and elevators. • Confer with marine engineers to set up the layout of boiler room equipment, heating and ventilation systems, refrigeration equipment, and propulsion machinery. • Lead teams from a variety of specialties to oversee building and testing prototypes. • Evaluate how the ship does during trials both at the dock and at sea and change the design as needed to make sure the ship meets national and international standards.

Work Environment

Marine engineers and naval architects held 5,900 jobs in 2010. They typically work in offices, where they have access to computer software and other tools necessary for analyzing projects and designing solutions. Sometimes, they must go to sea on the ships to test them or maintain them. Those working on power generation projects, such as offshore wind turbines or tidal power, work along the coast—both offshore and on land. They also sometimes work on oil rigs where they oversee repair or maintenance of systems that they may have designed. Industries employing the greatest numbers of marine engineers and naval architects in 2010 were the following: Architectural, engineering and related services 47% Federal government, excluding postal service 17% Ship and boat building 10% Other professional, scientific and technical services 6% Deep sea, coastal and great lakes water transportation 4%

How to Become a Marine Engineer or Naval Architect

Marine engineers and naval architects must have a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or marine systems engineering. Employers also value practical experience, so cooperative engineering programs, which provide college credit for structured job experience, are valuable.

Page 15

Education

Entry-level jobs in marine engineering and naval architecture require a bachelor’s degree. Students interested in preparing for this occupation benefit from taking high school courses in mathematics, such as algebra, trigonometry, and calculus; and science, such as chemistry and physics. For aspiring naval architects, drafting courses are helpful. Programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree in engineering typically include courses in calculus, physics, and computer-aided design. Courses specific to marine engineering and naval architecture include fluid mechanics, ship hull strength, and mechanics of materials. Programs in marine engineering, naval architecture, and marine systems engineering are accredited by ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

Important Qualities

Marine engineers and naval architects design, build and maintain ships from aircraft carriers to submarines and sailboats to tankers

Communication skills. Marine engineers and naval architects must be able to give clear instructions and explain complex concepts when leading teams of professionals on projects. Interpersonal skills. Marine engineers and naval architects meet with clients to analyze their needs for ship systems. Engineers must be able to discuss progress with clients to keep redesign options open before the project is too far along. Math skills. Marine engineers and naval architects use the principals of calculus, trigonometry, and other advanced topics in mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting in their work. Problem-solving skills. Marine engineers must design several systems for ships that work well together. Naval architects and marine engineers are expected to solve problems for their clients. They must draw on their knowledge and experience to make effective decisions. Licenses

Marine engineers design and maintain offshore oil rigs. These workers are expected to be in demand as more companies seek and drill for oil and gas deposits in the ocean floor.

Along with graduating from a bachelor’s degree program, marine engineers and naval architects usually take an exam for a mariner’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard. The first stage of the license is known as the 3rd Assistant License. With experience and further testing, a marine engineer may get a 2nd and then 1st Assistant License. The highest level of licensure is known as Chief Assistant. Higher grades of licensing are usually accompanied by higher pay and more responsibilities.

Advancement

Beginning marine engineers usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers. In larger companies, new engineers may also receive formal training in classrooms

or seminars. As beginning engineers gain knowledge and experience, they move on to more difficult projects where they have greater independence to develop designs, solve problems, and make decisions. Eventually, marine engineers may advance to become technical specialists or to supervise a team of engineers and technicians. Some may even become engineering managers or move into other managerial positions or sales work. In sales, an engineering background enables them to discuss technical aspects of certain kinds of engineering projects. Such knowledge is also useful in assisting clients in project planning, installation, and use.

Pay

The median annual wage of marine engineers and naval architects was $79,920 in May 2010. The median wage is the wage at which half of the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,200, and the top 10 percent earned more than $144,350. Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of marine engineers and naval architects in May 2010 were the following: Federal government, excluding postal service $100,750 Deep sea, coastal and water transportation $ 88,930 Architectural, engineering and related services $ 77,670 Other professional, scientific / technical services $ 68,460 Ship and boat building $ 65,860

Job Outlook

Employment of marine engineers and naval architects is expected to grow 17 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The need to design ships and systems to transport energy products, such as liquefied natural gas, across the globe will help to spur employment growth for this occupation. Employment of marine engineers and naval architects also will be supported by the need to modify existing ships and their systems because of new emissions and pollution regulations on cargo shipping. Marine engineers design and maintain offshore oil rigs. These workers are expected to be in demand as more companies seek and drill for oil and gas deposits in the ocean floor. Additionally, the increase in international overseas transportation of liquefied natural gas is expected to lead to demand for marine engineers to work on ship crews, though sometimes on ships sailing under foreign flags. The adoption of new and alternative energy sources, such as offshore wind turbines and tidal power generators, will also drive demand for marine engineer and naval architects. Demand for naval architects will likely come from the need to update fleets to meet new federal requirements for double-hulled ships for transporting oil and gas. In addition, the skills of naval architects may further be required to help design offshore rigs that drill in more inhospitable climates. Demand for marine engineers and naval architects will also come from the desire to have cargo ships that pollute less. The technology to do this is becoming more costeffective and the United States and other countries are focusing more on reducing pollution.

Moving Your Career Forward in Tough Times by Ford R. Myers, President, Career Potential, LLC

Work Harder and Smarter for Better Career Results

Let’s face it: the job market is bad and the economy is worse. That’s why this is the time to push harder than ever in conducting your job search and managing your career. In addition to working harder, you’ll need to work smarter as well. Are you upset that you didn’t “ace” your last job interview? Are you feeling like a failure because the job you wanted went to another candidate? When times are tough and things look bleak, it’s tempting to just “throw in the towel” and feel sorry for yourself, isn’t it? Well, a lot of people are doing exactly that. They’re “taking their foot off the gas” and coasting, or wallowing in self-pity and frustration. Many are exhausted, tapped-out and tired of all the rejection. When your competition has decided to “sit out” the rest of the game, that’s the worst time for YOU to quit — because now you can have every employer’s attention! There’s actually much less “noise” out there for your message to compete against. Push ahead now, and you’ll be noticed. Leverage smart career strategies, and you’ll quickly see the signs of success.

Page 17

every phase of your job search and career management efforts. Hiring managers will be able to sense this, and you’ll stand out from the crowd. Unlike your competition, YOU will exude confidence, focus, and “fit” — because you’ve laser-targeted the kind of job where you can do your best work and deliver maximum value. Conducting a job search and managing your career really is an “inside job” — and you have far more control over your results than you might have thought! So, it’s critically important to shift your attention away from today’s dire market conditions, and toward your own mindset. You can’t control external circumstances, but you CAN control how you deal with them. Take a good look at your own situation. How are YOU coping with current market pressures? If you’re having difficulty staying focused and motivated — if you’re feeling discouraged and defeated — you can always get career help. With the proper support and resources, you’ll start producing much better results. Remember that even in this challenging job market, plenty of people just like you are sticking with their career strategies. They’re advancing in their careers and, yes, Career success is still even landing great opportunities. There’s an “inside job” No matter how bad external circumstanc- no reason why YOU shouldn’t be able to es get, your real battle is INTERNAL. You move your career forward and enjoy the need to pay close attention to how you’re same success! thinking! As Henry Ford said, “Whether Copyright © Career Potential, LLC. All Rights Reserved. you think you can or you think you can’t, Copyright © Career Potential, LLC. Reprinted by permission you’re right.” If you maintain a high level of Ford R. Myers, a nationally-known Career Expert and author of “Get The Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring.” of focus and clarity, it will come through in and “it’s easier to get a new job when you already have a job.” But this is flawed thinking — and I’ve seen it backfire too many times NOT to warn you against it. If you take the first job that comes along, you’ll get complacent. Inertia and fear will set in. In the short term, it will certainly feel good to have a job to go to each morning. However, as weeks turn into months and months turn into years, you could find yourself stuck in that job you took “just to pay the bills.” Pretty soon, you may lose your career bearings and with every passing day, the notion of initiating another job transition will become more unpleasant and scary. What’s the solution? When the job market is at its worst, you need to be MORE selective. You need to focus on EXACTLY the kind of work you would LOVE to do. You need to identify precisely the kind of company you want to join. You need to confidently “stick to your guns,” and not “settle.” You need to be crystal clear on the ideal work situation for you — and go after it relentlessly. While you may need to make a few minor concessions in a down market, you shouldn’t compromise your professional standards in any way.

Linking people and technology.

Stay focused on your goals and “stick to your guns”

When the economy is in bad shape and the job market is frozen, many well-qualified, hard working people start to lower their sights. For them, “any job” becomes preferable to no job. Getting another position (ANY position) as quickly as possible appears to make sense because, as they say, “you can always keep looking”

Together,

The Best in Care

Y

ou are looking for attitudes in the workplace to become your career booster. You are possibly past your first year mark at work. You have somewhat learned the ropes of your position but you feel you are slowing down. So, what are some of the attitudes in the workplace that can help you get ahead at work? These are many positive attitudes that can help you do that. In fact, the value of these attitudes is that they make you more motivated and hence, give you a career boost. These are the 5 career booster attitudes in the workplace to get you ahead:

1. Be Enthusiastic

I know, how can you ever feel enthusiastic about work especially when you already feel sluggish with the same work after a few years? It is precisely this reason that I ask you to be enthusiastic. To be enthusiastic at work is about a mental state. You need to make the decision to be enthusiastic. Start by saying I will be an eager participant in this project or task. Attack your task with energy. Do not drag your feet. The more you tell yourself, “This is so boring”, or whatever the excuse maybe the worse you will feel. Get interested in the work and the energy will come naturally. Then decide to be eagerly involved. Being enthusiastic and energetic are attitudes in the workplace that can get you ahead. You cannot get ahead without energy.

2. Be Efficient Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Lancaster Regional Medical Center are two community hospitals dedicated to providing the highest quality care to Lancaster County residents. We offer state-ofthe-art technology in a friendly atmosphere - and a supportive team of physicians, nurses, technicians, and staff members who work together to provide exceptional compassionate care. Strive to be the most efficient worker in your team. According to Webster’s Universal College Dictionary, to be efficient means “performing or functioning effectively with the least waste of time and effort.” When you are effective, you are producing the intended result. When you are efficient you do it with the least waste of time and effort. That means you are capable and competent. If you carry with you the attitude in the workplace of constantly striving to be the most efficient worker, then you will sooner or later get ahead in your career. You will get a career booster because you are the most capable and competent on the team. Exceed expectations by knowing that

good is sometimes not good enough. Give everything your utmost best. You will naturally see how this becomes your career booster. When you strive for excellence in everything you do, you quite naturally surpass others in your work. That gets you ahead.

3. Be Excellent

Of the 5 attitudes in the workplace, this one probably calls for you to give yourself some pressure. A little pressure is good since it makes you push yourself harder. Strive for excellence in everything you do. Do not be contented with good. Go for great.

4. Be Early

Have you ever thought about being early as an attitude in the workplace that can get you ahead? Yes, especially when your workplace practices flexible time. Many people take flexible time for granted. They stroll in and out at their own pace, not knowing they have probably wasted productive time. Start early at work. Some of my most productive days are those that I start early before the phone rings and before my staff walks in with questions. Clear your emails from last night, craft that important email when there are no disturbances.

5. Be Easy

Make every effort to be the easiest to work with in the office. Now, I am not saying compromise on your need for excellence. For example, this means not to complain and grumble each time there is a team meet. No one likes to work with someone who nags all the time. When you are easy to work with, you make working enjoyable for the rest too. Such attitudes in the workplace is welcomed everywhere and you make yourself a competitive edge of any team. This competitive edge is your career booster. There is no need for complicated plans to get a career boost. Simple steps with these attitudes in the workplace can get you ahead in your career. Follow Your Passion, Not the Money

T

here are many ways your workat-home option can go awry, but one that I see frequently is a lack of interest. Too often people get caught up in the hype of making great money with a turn-key home business system that they don’t take time to consider whether or not they like the product, company, or business methods. This happens a lot in direct sales, in which someone gets excited about big compensation and an easy to manage system, but once they join and start working discover that it’s “not for me”. It doesn’t matter how much money can made in vitamins, make-up, cooking utensils or whatever program that sounds profitable. If you don’t like health, beauty, or cooking, you’re going to struggle. The trick to finding work-athome success comes from first identifying your passions and interests, and then finding ways to turn it into money. Here are some tips. Identify your passions and interests: 1) If you didn’t have to work, what would you spend your time doing? 2) What activities give you energy? 3) What did you dream about as a child?

even if you think it won’t lead to working at home. For example, if you wanted to be a rock star as a kid, write down rock star. You may not be able to become a rockstar, but you can start a website with rock star news or music reviews, become an audio editor, or maybe you can become a rock star. Justin Bieber started with a YouTube video and look where he is now. Once you have your passions, you need to determine how can make money from it. This is the tricky part, but if you open your mind to possibilities, you should be able to find multiple When answering these questions, don’t cen- income methods from your passions. The basic sor. Instead write everything that comes to mind ways to make money are to sell stuff, sell your

skill, and sell your knowledge. Do you make something related to your passion such as a non-toxic, non-stinky bug spray (if so let me know). Or perhaps there is a company already making product related to your passion and all you need to do is partner with it. Do you speak a foreign language and like to help people? Translation and tutoring may be a good option for making money with those skills. Are you good at feeding a family of four for only $25 a week? There are many people willing to pay money to learn how you do that. If you’re still struggling for ideas, do an Internet search on your passions and see what others are doing. You’ll find a host of examples such as blogs and websites making money through advertising, people selling their skills through a service business, or selling their knowledge through books and coaching. There is a saying that if you do what you love, the money will follow. While it also takes commitment and a plan, doing what you love is an important part of achieving work-at-home success. Helping Those in Need: Human Service Workers

M

by Colleen Teixeira Moffat

any people experience hardship and need help. This help is provided by a network of agencies and organizations, both public and private. Staffed by human service workers, this network, and the kinds of help it offers, is as varied as the clients it serves. “Human services tend to be as broad as the needs and problems of the client base,” says Robert Olding, president of the National Organization for Human Services in Woodstock, Georgia. Human service workers help clients become more self-sufficient. They may do this by helping them learn new skills or by recommending resources that allow them to care for themselves or work to overcome setbacks. These workers also help clients who are unable to care for themselves, such as children and the elderly, by coordinat-

ing the provision of their basic needs. The first section of this article explains the duties of human service workers and the types of assistance they provide. The next several sections detail the populations served by, and the occupations commonly found in, human services. Another section describes some benefits and drawbacks to the work, and the section that follows discusses the education and skills needed to enter human service occupations. The final section lists sources of additional information. What human service workers do Human service workers provide a variety of services aimed at improving clients’ lives. The type of assistance they offer varies by client group, the type of organization that employs these workers, and their role in the

organization. (See the box on page 25 for more information about different types of human service organizations.) Although duties vary by job, all human service workers perform many of the same basic tasks. They evaluate a client’s needs, create a treatment plan, and put the plan into action. Throughout the process, they provide clients with emotional support. Evaluate and plan Working closely with the client, human service workers identify problems and create a plan for services to help the client solve these problems. This process—which includes evaluating the client’s support system, environment, and values—is tailored to each individual’s needs. “Steps differ, based on where the client is at that point in time,” says Deborah Jackson, a family self-sufficiency coordinator for a housing commission in the Annapolis, Maryland, area. Human service workers can’t force help on someone who doesn’t want it, and they can’t take over a client’s life. Instead, they try to help every client make good decisions, find resources to overcome problems, and inspire the client to make improvements. “I know they can succeed,” Jackson says of her clients, “but I can’t succeed for them.” Put the plan into action After evaluating the client’s situation and creating a plan, human service workers put the plan into effect. This may include providing direct assistance or helping clients in coordinating services, or both. Practical assistance helps clients accomplish daily living activities: eating, bathing, dressing, and so forth. Workers most often provide this assistance in institutions, such as hospitals, shelters, and residential care facilities for people who are elderly or disabled. Practical assistance might

also include helping clients with recreational activities, from arts and crafts to games. In addition, human service workers coordinate services that are provided by their own or other organizations, including government, for-profit, and nonprofit agencies. They help clients by researching types of, and eligibility requirements for, assistance. For example, human service workers might help a client who lives in unsafe housing locate and qualify for low-income apartments in the client’s community. Another way that human service workers help coordinate services is to assist clients with completing necessary paperwork. After clients begin receiving assistance, human service workers monitor the clients’ status to ensure that services are being provided and are appropriate. Jackson, for example, sees her clients about once a week so she can track their progress. Provide emotional support Because their clients often face many difficult problems simultaneously, human service workers routinely provide emotional support along with other forms of help. These workers must foster a good working relationship to ensure that a client feels comfortable discussing problems candidly and asking for help. The kind of emotional care human service workers provide ranges from empathy to celebration, depending on what a client is experiencing. “Clients have the enthusiasm to improve their lives,” says Jackson. “It’s often a lack of confidence that prevents them. They’ve never had someone encourage them.” However, human service workers are trained to recognize when emotional support and encouragement are not enough. In those cases, human service workers may direct a client toward additional support services to address more serious issues, such as domestic violence. Populations served by human service workers Human service workers assist a diverse population of clients, who are of every age and have a broad range of issues. “The client base of human services runs the gamut,” says the National Organization of Human Services’ Olding. Neil Headman, assistant professor of human services at the University of Illinois at Springfield, agrees. “It doesn’t matter who your client is,” he says. “Everyone needs help.” The following overview of types of clients is not exhaustive. Furthermore, clients dealing with more than one problem may fall into more than one group; for example, someone with a mental illness may also have a problem with substance abuse. Children and families. Human service workers ensure that children live in safe homes and have their basic

Human service workers help people who are homeless to meet basic needs. needs met. Guiding parents in caring for their children may include assisting with applications for food stamps or low-income housing and locating reliable childcare. In some cases, such as those involving physical abuse or domestic violence, human service workers might recommend that children be removed from their parents’ custody and be placed in foster care or group homes. This removal may be temporary or permanent, but the goal is to work with parents toward improving the situation so that children can return home. “The best place to serve kids is in their home and with a family,” says Joan Wallace-Benjamin, who runs a child welfare agency in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. If a return home isn’t possible, human service workers try to find permanent homes and adoptive parents for the children.

The elderly. Human service workers who assist older clients help them to live independently in their own homes whenever possible. This might mean coordinating the delivery of prepared meals or the placement of personal care aides to help with daily living activities. For older clients who are unable to live alone, human service workers help with their placement in nursing homes or other residential care facilities. For clients nearing the end of their lives, human service workers may coordinate the provision of hospice care. The homeless. Human service workers help people who are homeless to meet basic needs. ters that can assist the clients in learning new skills or finding jobs. Some clients might need help finding treatment to address an underlying cause of homelessness. Immigrants. Immigrants often need help adjusting to life in a new country. Human service workers help them find housing, jobs, and other resources, such as programs for learning English. In some cases, human service workers also refer clients to legal aid services to assist immigrants with paperwork and other administrative issues. People with addictions. Human service workers help people who are struggling with many types of addiction, such as to alcohol or gambling. They evaluate clients’ needs and then direct clients to rehabilitation facilities, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment centers, that can best meet those needs. They also refer clients to groups or programs to help clients get support outside of treatment. Some human service workers might work with families of addicts, helping family members understand the nature of addiction and referring them to support programs for families. People with criminal records. People who have been imprisoned face challenges reentering society, such as overcoming the stigma of their criminal record. Human service workers help these clients integrate back into society by matching them with job training or placement programs, helping them find housing, and directing them to support programs so they avoid reoffending. People with disabilities. In working with people who have disabilities, human service workers often focus on helping clients live independently. Types of assistance include finding rehabilitation services to help clients adapt to the disability, working with employers on adjusting job details so that positions may be filled by clients with disabilities, and referring clients to personal care services that can help with daily living activities. For people with disabilities who cannot live independently, human service workers help locate suitable residential care facilities. People with mental illnesses. Human service workers direct clients who are mentally ill to appropriate resources, such as self-help and support groups. In addition, they help clients with severe mental illness to become self-sufficient and receive proper care. Administrative workers

Administrative workers provide the management and support necessary for a human service organization to function. Job titles for administrative workers in human services include the following: Development directors. These workers create their organization’s fundraising strategy and supervise fundraising activities. They work with the executive director and program directors to determine funding needs and then meet with potential donors to explain these needs and how donations are used to serve the community. Development directors often supervise other staff members, such as grant writers. Executive directors. Executive directors oversee the operation of human service organizations. They perform high-level administrative tasks that range from budgeting to human resources management. Much of their time is spent meeting with policymakers, community leaders, and others interested in their organization and its programs. Executive directors also are responsible for setting the organization’s goals and for ensuring that staff members work toward those goals. Grant writers. Grant writers research sources of funding for which their organizations are eligible. They prepare and maintain records regarding applications, funding received, and how funds are spent. provide appropriate assistance. Common jobs for human service workers Human service agencies are organized differently, but some jobs are common to many of them. Not all of these positions are in all agencies; job tasks in one position may overlap with those in another, and some agencies may use different titles. Furthermore, job titles include occupations that are found outside of human services, and job tasks may differ in other settings. Jobs in human services are separated into two types: Those in which workers deal directly with clients and those in which workers provide administrative support for an organization that provides services. Both types are essential for human service organizations to run effectively. Direct work with clients Human service workers who deal directly with clients are responsible for providing the services that an organization offers. Job titles for people who work directly with clients include the following: Case workers and case managers. Case workers and case managers assess clients’ needs and work with them to develop a treatment plan. These workers, who are sometimes called social and human service assistants, help clients in choosing among suitable resources and then follow up to ensure that the services provided are appropriate. Counselors. These workers provide individual and group counseling to help clients with marital difficulties or other problems or in making decisions, such as about career options. Counselors may diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders. Some specialize in working with specific populations, such as children and families or veterans. Psychologists. Psychologists diagnose and treat emotional and mental disorders. They provide therapy to individuals, groups, and families. They may design, or assist other human service workers in developing, individual treatment plans for clients. Social workers. Social workers help clients cope with or solve everyday problems, such as difficulty getting organized. After talking with clients, the social worker may provide strategies to help them modify their behaviors or environments. A social worker also acts as an advocate for clients and refers them to other resources.

ment human service programs. They assess the needs of the population that their organization serves and create programs to meet those needs. Program directors supervise staff members and ensure that the program meets state and federal criteria for service providers. These workers also may be responsible for collecting data that are used to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs. Ups and downs of human service work Human service work is both rewarding and challenging. Like most careers, however, the suitability of workers for these jobs varies by individual. “It’s wonderful work,” says Carol Goertzel, president and chief executive officer of human service agencies in Holmes, Pennsylvania, “but it’s not for everybody.” Human service workers help clients improve their lives, and it’s satisfying to see results over time. These results are often dramatic and show how much people can accomplish when they get professional help. “Anyone who expects big results within short periods of time is asking a lot from people who’ve had no support,” Goertzel says. “We see people make incredible changes.” Most human service workers build relationships with their clients out of concern and a desire to help, aware that clients don’t always express their gratitude. “You

can’t expect people to say, ‘Thank you so much. You helped me today,’” Goertzel says. As the U.S. population grows, so will the demand for the kinds of help human service agencies provide. However, financial resources available to these organizations do not grow as quickly as the demand for services, increasing competition among agencies seeking funds from the same donors. Human service workers are often asked to provide additional services without having access to additional resources. Some workers find the resulting stress difficult to manage. Much of a human service organization’s is based “Human service budget on highly unpreworkers are trained dictable charidonations. with a core set of table Because wages skills that they can are usually tied this variable apply anywhere,” to budget, workers in human service jobs tend to earn less than those in occupations requiring similar levels of education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect employment and wage data specifically on human service workers. However, BLS does collect data on occupations— including several types of counselors, psychologists, and social workers—in which workers provide human services in the social assistance industry. Few human service workers pursue these careers solely for the income, though. Workers cite a passion for the field, noting that human service jobs provide opportunities to help people in need and to find solutions to community problems. Getting into human services People are drawn to human services for different reasons. Backgrounds vary, but personal experience is sometimes a motivator. Jackson, for example, says that surviving domestic violence stirred her desire to help others. “My philosophy is that I went through what I went through for a reason,” she says. “My role is to help people.” Jobs in human services are based on the client population served. Workers who enter these occupations often have similar skills, although their education levels may vary. Skills “Human service workers are trained with a core set of skills that they can apply anywhere,” says the University of Illinois’ Headman. Chief among these are interpersonal and communication skills, because most workers deal directly with a variety of people. Building relationships with clients involves listening to a client’s problems, needs, and concerns and communicating solutions, treatments, or services for them. In addition, human service workers must work well on teams because they often collaborate with others in their field. Human service workers also need analytical skills to help clients develop strategies to solve problems. The ability to think creatively

At all education levels, degrees are offered in human services, counseling, social work, and psychology. helps workers determine ways to get around hurdles that interfere with clients’ efforts to succeed. In addition, human service workers should be compassionate and patient. Most of their clients are in stressful situations, so it is important for these workers to be empathetic and sensitive to their clients’ emotional needs. Education Educational requirements in human service organizations vary with the type of work performed. However, many human service workers have some kind of postsecondary degree. The education level usually ranges from an associate’s degree to a master’s degree, depending on workers’ titles. At all education levels, degrees are offered in human services, counseling, social work, and psychology. Most programs require some fieldwork, such as an internship, so that students get practical experience working with clients. The level of education generally dictates the type of work someone may perform and the amount of responsibility he or she may be given. Associate’s degree. Human service workers with an associate’s degree often perform entry-level tasks. They spend most of their time interviewing new clients and managing details of cases. They help connect clients with appropriate resources and complete any required paperwork. Bachelor’s degree. Those who have a bachelor’s degree spend much of their time managing client cases, just as workers with an associate’s degree do. They also provide some clinical support. Master’s degree. Workers with a master’s degree focus primarily on clinical work, providing counseling to clients. In some states or settings, these workers may need to be supervised by a licensed professional—such as a psychologist, social worker, or counselor—or they may be required to hold a license themselves.

Your local library may have books and periodicals about human service work. To learn more about specific occupations, consider visiting human service organizations to ask about opportunities for gaining experience, such as internships, job shadowing, and informational interviewing. Another source of information about hundreds of occupations is the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The Handbook provides detailed information about occupations with tasks that are similar to those of human service workers. In addition to more detailed information about counselors, social workers, and psychologists—all of which were described briefly in this article—related Handbook occupations include social and community service managers, health educators, and social and human service assistants. The Handbook is available in many public libraries and career centers or online at www.bls.gov/ooh. Several associations also have information specific to careers in human services. The 20 Best Paying Healthcare Careers Where You Don’t Need to Be a Doctor

No, you do not need to be a medical doctor to have a well-paying career in the healthcare field. These careers are booming for two reasons: The population is aging, and people want to live as long as they can in good health, and new health care technologies add considerably to their options and your career opportunities.

egin by making up for key high school sciences you may have missed or dropped. You will need them to understand the technical side of your work. If you got poor marks, many credit science courses are available as online or continuing education, so you can better your marks, without leaving your current situation, before you apply. Keep track of volunteer work you do that promotes health, because it demonstrates your serious interest in the field. Most fields allow you to start in an entry level position with a certificate from an accredited institution, but for career advancement, acquire an Associates or Bachelors degree. Make sure that the school you choose is accredited by the specific body responsible for that field. Online programs should usually be supplemented by interaction with patients and training in use laboratories or with medical equipment. Health care careers in general often require shift work (nursing, for example), but with advancement and seniority, you can choose shifts you find convenient more easily. But now let’s look at careers and their approximate salaries:

Registered Nurses – Salary: $66,530

Nursing is such a broad profession that the simplest way to describe it appeared as a subtitle on the cover of a successful 1990 book, Nurse, by Peggy Anderson: Doctors don’t keep you alive. I do. The registered nurse is a highly skilled practitioner who may, for example, be the first person to assess patients in an emergency room (triage nurse), supervise physician-directed treatments, or respond first to hospital emergencies. Most nurses specialize, and a few examples of specialties are patient education specialists, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and certified registered nurse anesthetists. It is a career into which one can grow in many directions. Educational requirements: Registered nurses usually require a Bachelor’s degree, an Associates degree, or a diploma from an approved nursing program. Currently, there is a considerable shortage of nurses in the United States, to the extent that the government encourages nurses to immigrate. Many nursing programs are available online.

Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists – Salary: $55,620

In this field, the technologist uses increasingly sophisticated laboratory equipment to prepare and conduct tests on human body fluids or cells, to identify disease agents or deficiencies, and then provides the information to physicians. The field is excellent for the science-minded student who is eager to learn and use the most advanced health sciences technologies, and to upgrade skills as the opportunity arises. Educational requirements: As in many growing fields, certificates, Associates or Bachelors degrees all provide entry, at least at the technician level. The critical path includes taking courses certified by a body such as National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or a similarly respected body, as well as getting certification by a professional association. Note that the field encompasses so many sub-specialties that the student may be dealing with the requirements of different agencies and regulations, depending

Respiratory Therapists – Salary: $54,200 In this career you assess and treat breathing disorders. This includes working with the patient, but also maintaining patient records, and operating and maintaining the equipment. Respiratory therapy is another of the fields that is growing due to an aging population. As of 2006, there was a total of 379 accredited programs in the United States, at colleges, universities, technical schools, and medical schools. Educational requirements: You can work in respiratory therapy with a 2-year associate’s degree, but a 4-year Bachelors or Masters degree is usually a prerequisite for advancement. It is critical to study only at schools certified by Committees on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Bear in mind that

in a growing field like this, you may be able to get financial or other help to upgrade your training. Radiologic Technologists and Technicians – Salary: $54,180 In radiology, you would diagnose health problems or injuries by taking X-rays and CAT scans, or inserting harmless dyes into patients’ blood streams to track the results, You could also work with computed tomography (CATscan) and magnetic resonance (MRI). New technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging have greatly expanded the field, leading to much faster than average growth. An eagerness to keep up with advancing technology and the ability to work with anxious patients are key factors for success. Educational requirements: You could enter the field through a certificate (21-24 months), an Associates

degree, or a Bachelors degree, with associate. An associate degree is the most prevalent form of educational attainment among radiologic technologists and technicians. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredited 213 programs resulting in a certificate, 397 programs resulting in an associate degree, and 35 resulting in a bachelor’s degree in 2009.

Dietitians and Nutritionists – Salary: $53,230 The dietician/nutritionist plans and organizes food services in large institutions and/or counsels individuals on diet and nutrition. Research may be part of the work. This is a broad field, but it’s worth remembering that, as the population ages, more people will need help managing special diets (low sodium, low, cholesterol, restricted sugar, low- or high-fiber), and they will value expert advice. Educational requirements: In addition to a Bachelors degree, there are often licence, certification, or registration requirements, depending on the state.

18

Occupational Therapist Assistants – Salary: $50,830

In this career, you will help the occupational therapist with treatments and procedures. The essential purpose of occupational therapy is to help patients recovering from injury or disease or dealing with developmental delay live in an environment suited to them. A related career is Occupational Therapy Aide, where you would prepare required materials and equipment and may also perform clerical duties. In this expected-to-grow field, in 2008 there were about 27,000 OTAs and 8,000 aides. Usually, you will have the advantage of normal working hours because therapy can be scheduled. However, you may need physical strength in order to help patients undergoing rehabilitation. Educational requirements: An Occupational Therapist Assistant needs an Associate’s degree or certificate and, depending on the state, may be expected to pass a certification examination for licensure. Look for the designation of Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Occupational Therapy Aides usually receive most of their training on the job, so it is a good way to get into this health service area while aiming at the future. A number of courses are available online.

Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians – Salary: $49,730 In this career you would conduct diagnostic tests on heart/lung patients, and you may conduct or assist in electrocardiograms and cardiac catheterizations. The duties and educational requirements of technologists and technicians are similar. In this rapidly growing career, you may find yourself working with people who have life-threatening illnesses, so it will reward the technically competent person who can connect with others in a time of stress. Educational requirements: You can work in this field with a two-year accredited degree, but increasingly, four-year programs are offered. You may qualify after only a one-year program if you have an allied health care degree. You may have difficulty finding an accredited program online or through distance learning because you will need hands-on training working directly with the patients and the equipment on the site. Physical Therapist Assistants – Salary: $48,590 In this career, you would assist physical therapists in providing treatments and procedures for the physical rehabilitation of patients. Another position to consider is physical therapist aide, supervised by physical therapists or physical therapist assistants. There were about 60,000 physical therapist assistants in 2008, and 46,000 physical therapist aides. Educational requirements: Many states require an accredited physical therapist assistant program, offering an associates degree, as well as certification in CPR and other first aid, as well as clinical experience. Aides require a high school diploma, followed by on-the-job training. Licensing is not usually required, so this is a good career option for getting into the field right away and upgrading later.

PHARM SALES

ne of the hottest sales careers out there is in pharm sales. This field has always been a very popular career to get into but to many outsiders, there are a lot of questions about pharm sales. Here are some of the more common pharm sales questions and answers.

What do pharm sales reps actually do?

Pharm sales reps promote the use of their company’s drug products to mainly physicians, pharmacists and nurses. They also make sure that pharmacies have enough stock of their company’s drug products on the shelves. The term pharm sales rep is also interchangeable with such terms as pharma rep, pharmaceutical sales representative, drug representative and sometimes medical sales rep. But medical sales could also mean the sales of medical equipment and devices rather than drugs.

What qualifications do I need in order to become a pharm sales rep?

Normally, a college or university degree is required plus above average communications skills.

Do I need a science degree for pharm sales?

No, one doesn’t necessarily have to have a science degree as there have been many people who entered the pharmaceutical sales industry from many various backgrounds including degrees in business and arts. But having said that, you better have the capacity to learn the science that will be required to sell pharmaceuticals. “Training departments of pharma companies will train their pharm reps in all aspects of the science that is required. A prior science background will be helpful but is not absolutely required.”

Would I need previous sales experience to get into pharm sales?

Again, much like a science background, sales experience would be helpful but is not absolutely necessary. If you can demonstrate that you have above average communications skills as evidenced by other prior activities and have a sales aptitude, you can become a pharm sales rep. The company training departments will train new reps on how to effectively sell to healthcare professionals.” “Of course, somebody with a proven sales history will be a top candidate for a pharm sales position but others without prior sales experience can also get into the field successfully provided that their communications skills are above average.”

equal opportunity employment journal Small companies with smaller sales forces may not have fleet company cars but in these cases, they will give you a car allowance if you drive your own vehicle on the job. It will still end up being a financial perk.”

What is the best way to find and apply for pharm sales positions?

How much money can I make as a pharm sales representative?

The potential is a lot. Recent graduates without any experience could start in the mid $30,000s to $40,000s but after a few years, this level can easily go to $50,000s to $70,000s. Bonuses for high performers can push overall incomes to six figures. Don’t forget the other perks that come with the job like company car, travel and excellent company benefits. A company car package alone is worth a few thousand dollars.”

Do pharm sales reps get company cars?

Big pharmaceutical companies will usually have fleet company cars for their sales forces.

“Of course one can always apply online to companies, recruiters and use resume distribution services but the main problem here is that everyone else will be using that same route as well. The potential of getting lost in the masses is extremely high. This is one of the major reasons why many people find the pharma industry so tough to break into. There is a high demand for the available openings out there resulting in fierce competition for jobs.”“The better way for people to find and get pharm sales jobs is to network with the right people who have the power to hire you or who can give a personal recommendation to get you hired. It’s more work this way but there is significantly less competition. A lot of individuals will at first find this route too challenging

July 2012

since it is much easier to submit applications online these days. But the online shotgun distribution route will usually not get you very far. Getting in the trenches to get to the right people is actually a sales type of activity and if you went through that trouble to get your name and resume in front of a hiring sales manager, that person will be impressed.

How does one start an effective job search then?

The first step is to get the proper knowledge on the best ways to prepare and conduct your campaign. You want to be fully prepared before you get yourself in front of industry people and you want to know the best routes to the jobs. Find some published resources with inside knowledge that will help you towards this. Then apply this knowledge as you begin to meet industry people who can help you along further.” Clint Cora is the author of the book “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales - Direct Inside Advice and Guidance from a Sales Manager”. He had a very successful fourteen year career as a pharmaceutical sales representative, sales trainer, product marketing manager and a national sales manager. hen Pam Hatchfield goes to work, she’s helping to preserve a little piece of history for generations to come. Hatchfield uses a background in chemistry, art history, and studio art to care for objects ranging from the pre-Egyptian to the contemporary. “It’s very interesting and a lot of fun,” she says of her work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Hatchfield, a conservator, is one of many who make a living in the museum industry. More than 200,000 people worked in the industry in May 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). A museum hires workers in a variety of occupations to help share its treasures with the public. BLS data also show that workers in the museum industry had a median annual wage of $27,456 in May 2008, less than the annual median of $32,390 for all U.S. workers. Still, competition for jobs remains fierce because of the attraction many have to the work. “There’s an understanding that museums are nonprofits, and we’re not going to get rich working in them,” says Jim Hakala, senior educator at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History in Boulder. “There’s a lot of dedication, a real love of the field.” This article explores that dedication, revealing why people enjoy working in museums and what their career options are. The first section describes the museum industry. The second section talks about three categories of museum work: collections management and care, exhibit design, and education.

Other sections describe museum occupations and the skills, training, and experience workers need to do their jobs. A final section suggests sources for finding more information.

Museum Size and Other Matters

Museums organize, collect, and present to the public objects or information of historical, cultural, or educational value. Through their collections, museums also aim to preserve each item in an exhibit. And all museums share a mission to educate visitors. Museums, historical sites, and similar institutions employed 219,700 workers in 2008, according to data from the BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. Privately owned museums accounted for 130,700 of those workers. Another 64,300

workers were employed in museums operated by local and State governments. And 24,700 worked in the Federal Government’s museums. But not all museum-related workers are employed directly by museums. Some work for firms that museums hire to perform tasks such as conservation, packing and shipping objects, and designing exhibits. Others are self-employed. There are many types of museums. Some exhibit objects, such as paintings and historical artifacts; others focus on providing an experience. Museum types include art, natural history, and children’s museums; science and technology centers; botanical gardens; nature centers; and zoos and aquariums. Museums range in size from large, inter-

In fact, small museums play a significant role in this industry. According to the American Association of Museums, half of all museums polled in a recent survey employed fewer than seven full-time and five part-time people. Securing funding for museums is sometimes difficult, in part because museums are usually nonprofit organizations. Most depend heavily on charitable contributions and on money collected from admissions fees, food and museum store sales, building rentals, and other revenue sources. Smaller proportions of museums’ operating budgets typically come from grants and other Federal, State, or local government funding and investment income, such as that from endowments. And some museums have a parent organization, such as a college or university, which provides services such as building maintenance or security.

Teamwork is also an important part of many museum jobs. Museum work can be grouped into three broad categories: collections management and care, exhibit design, and education. Occasionally, the three overlap. For example, an exhibit’s design often takes into account its educational goals. And proper care of objects must be maintained when designing an exhibit. Similarly, occupations sometimes fall into more than one category. In this article, occupations that span categories are included in each. Also mentioned are alternative places of employment if museum-related work is available outside a museum. Collections management and care. Essential to most museums are the objects in it. keep track of objects in a museum’s collection. For example, detailed information about the history, condition, and location of an object is often stored in computer databases. Additionally, some collections are in the process of being put online to make them more accessible to both museum staff and the public. Workers who manage and care for a museum’s collections are experts on handling items to minimize damage, and they understand how temperature, light, humidity and other factors can harm these objects. These workers ensure that their museum’s collections are preserved and shared with the public in a meaningful way. Some of these workers include archivists, collections managers and registrars, conservators, curators, and preparators. In May 2008, median wages of collections management and care occupations varied in the museum industry, according to BLS. Some examples are $42,850 for curators, $37, 336 for archivists, and $34,620 for

These workers also maintain inventories, files, and databases and manage the paperwork and related duties associated with a museum’s objects. Preparators. As the job title suggests, preparators prepare objects for display and help to install them in exhibits. They also might prepare the exhibit space by doing simple construction, building exhibit cases or display units, painting, and hanging text labels or other informative materials. Other tasks sometimes include performing routine maintenance, making mounts, or helping to take down old exhibits. (See also the section on collections management and care.)

Education

All museum workers who help visitors learn about history, culture, and the world around them are involved—to some extent—in education. Some, however, focus specifically on this task. Education-related museum jobs have become increasingly prominent in recent decades, as museums place greater emphasis on informal or experiential learning. Today, most museums employ at least one person who is responsible for its educational programs and objectives; some museums dedicate an entire department to education. Workers involved in museum education are usually experts on methods of teaching and presenting information. But they also must understand the history and significance of their museum’s mission. Workers might consult with curators and other subject matter experts or perform their own research. A general title used for many of the occupations performing this work is museum educator. Museum educators’ tasks might range from developing instructional materials to coordinating public outreach programs. More specific titles include education directors, educational technology specialists, evaluators, public programs coordinators, school programs coordinators, tour guides, and volunteer coordinators. Education directors. Sometimes called curators of education, these workers oversee a museum’s educational efforts and are often in charge of its education department. They take care of hiring and budgeting for this department and ensure consistency across its educational programs. These directors also might help to create and promote a museum’s educational offerings. Educational technology specialists. These specialists develop, maintain, or improve various forms of technology-based learning. For example, they might design audience-specific Web sites, such as those for teachers, young children, or teens. Or they might coordinate distance learning programs that use videoconferencing or other technologies that allow users—such as students in a classroom—to view museum collections remotely. Evaluators. Evaluators study the effectiveness and appeal of a museum’s programs and exhibits. They conduct interviews and administer surveys to determine what a museum’s audience likes, what it is learning, and which methods of presenting information work best. They analyze this information, often summarizing the results in written reports that offer suggestions for designing or changing educational programs and exhibits. Evaluators work either directly for museums or as consultants. Public programs coordinators. Public programs coordinators develop lectures, symposiums, and other events related to a museum’s collections or exhibits. Tasks associated with these efforts might include researching topics of interest to the public, arranging for speakers, and working with a museum’s events coordinator to ensure that programs run smoothly. School programs coordinators. These workers develop educational materials for teachers and students. They might create teachers’ guides to highlight parts of an exhibit, for example, or design worksheets for students visiting the museum. These coordinators also help to schedule museum tours for schoolchildren and either lead the tours or train guides, known as docents, to lead them.

And they often perform outreach in schools to increase awareness about the museum. Tour guides or docents. Tour guides or docents take groups or individual visitors through the museum, explaining the significance of exhibits and answering questions. Their efforts help to stimulate interest in the collections. These positions are frequently filled by volunteers and are often part-time. Volunteer coordinators. These coordinators help to manage a museum’s volunteer program. Many museums have hundreds of volunteers who give tours or perform other tasks. Volunteer coordinators select and train these unpaid assistants and oversee their scheduling. And in some museums, especially smaller ones, they may be volunteers themselves.

Working in a museum

The museum industry is competitive, especially for popular museum occupations such as curators, conservators, and museum technicians—occupations for which BLS projects that employment will grow much faster than the average. (BLS does not have outlook information for every museum occupation discussed in this article.) In highly competitive fields, workers who are willing to relocate for a job often increase their marketability. And for the best entrylevel opportunities in museums, think small. “It’s often easier to get a job at a small institution than at a large one,” says the University of Colorado’s Jim Hakala, “because there are so many historical societies and other small museums.”

But many museum workers face the same challenges when funding is low. Budgetary constraints may mean that jobs are cut or that workers must continue to do their jobs despite limited resources. Museum work sometimes involves fundraising efforts to make up for these financial shortfalls. “We’re constantly having events to raise money or trying to convince donors that we’re worthy of funds,” says Mike DiPaolo, executive director of the Lewes Historical Society in Lewes, Delaware. The work hours of museum staff vary by position. Many workers have a standard weekday, daytime schedule, but some regularly work evenings or weekends to cover extended museum hours or special events. Some positions involve travel. For some workers, like Jeanne Benas, a registrar at the National Museum of American History, this travel includes transporting or acquiring new objects for the museum. As a workplace, museums provide variety, both in tasks that need to be performed and in exhibits that change periodically. And that variety, say workers, encourages learning. “The best part about my job is that I get to be a perpetual learner,” says Christine Reich, manager of research and evaluation at the Museum of Science in Boston. “Museums themselves are learning institutions, so you learn just by being in them.” Conservator Pam Hatchfield agrees. “One of the reasons that I love my job so much,” she says, “is that I’m always learning.” Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook

Licenses

Some states license materials engineers; requirements vary by state. Licensed engineers are called professional engineers (PEs). Licensure generally has the following requirements: • A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program • A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam

Relevant Work Experience

Materials engineers must write plans and reports clearly so that people without a materials engineering background understand the concepts.

A passing score on the Professional Engineering (PE) exam The initial Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam can be taken after graduation from college. Engineers who pass this exam are commonly called engineers in training (EITs) or engineer interns (EIs). After acquiring suitable work experience, EITs and EIs can take the second exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering. Several states require continuing education for engineers to keep their license. Most states recognize licensure from other states, if the licensing state’s requirements meet or exceed their own requirements.

Certification

Certification in the field of metallography is available through the Materials Information Society, ASM International. This certification is designed to supplement college courses in materials engineering or materials science. Beginning materials engineers usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers. In large companies, new engineers may receive formal training in classrooms or seminars. As engineers gain knowledge and experience, they move on to more difficult projects where they have greater independence to develop designs, solve problems, and make decisions. Eventually, materials engineers may advance to become technical specialists or to supervise a team of engineers and technicians. Many become engineering managers or move into other managerial positions or sales work. An engineering background is useful in sales because it enables sales engineers to discuss a product’s technical aspects and assist in product planning, installation, and use.

Job Outlook

Employment of materials engineers is expected to grow 9 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. Materials engineers will be needed to design uses for new materials both in traditional industries, such as aerospace manufacturing, and in industries focused on new medical or scientific products. Materials engineers are in demand in growing fields such as nanotechnology and biomedical engineering. They find new uses for these technologies, which can help to address problems with consumer products, industrial processes, and medical needs. Because the work of materials engineers is closely connected to organizations’ research and development, firms will likely seek to draw upon the skills of materials engineers to stay at the forefront of their respective industries. Materials engineers work in many other fields as well, including thermal sprays. Thermal sprays are insulating coats of materials such as metal alloys, ceramics, and plastics, and they are widely accepted in reducing energy use. Thus, these engineers may find a growing role in weatherization efforts for institutions and companies seeking to cut energy costs.

Job Prospects

Despite the relatively lower projected growth rate for this occupation, there should be favorable job prospects as materials engineers are needed to fill positions as more experienced materials engineers get promoted or retire.

Materials engineers will be needed to design uses for new materials both in traditional industries, such as aerospace manufacturing, and in industries focused on new medical or scientific products. Highways and Bridges Ports and Marine Federal/DOD

4 Ways to Pursue Your Passion by Markell R. Steele

I

n the ideal world we’d all be able to pursue our passions and make tons of money doing that. I know that doesn’t always happen. The reality is that at times we have to be practical when it comes to the jobs we choose and other career decisions we make. Early in our careers, it doesn’t seem like such a big deal. We’re happy to get a job that pays decently, uses our college degree or career training in which there is a reasonable chance for advancement. We’re able to pay rent, save some money, get a car and life is good. Then, we arrive at a point, maybe 10- 15 years into a career, and wonder how we got there and what else is out there. This wondering can be prompted by the realization that our salary isn’t aligned with our experience and training, we got passed over for a promotion or on overall feeling of boredom. For whatever reason, we’re no longer as passionate as when we started, and the work we’re doing doesn’t really meet our needs anymore. It’s at this point that people start to re-evaluate their career progress. They take a look at their situation- evaluate their finances, lifestyle, retirement savings and determine they need to make a certain amount of money in order to maintain their lifestyle. The unfortunate part, they feel, is that

pursuing a career they can be passionate about might not satisfy their practical needs now or ever. They feel stuck. Some would argue that if you pursue your career passions, everything else will fall into place to support it. That may be true to an extent, but many of us aren’t willing to take that risk. When kids’ education, mortgages and bills are involved it seems almost frivolous and selfish to pursue a passion. I love my career, but over the years have encountered challenges and setbacks like any other professional. I’ve been in work settings that weren’t a fit and worked on projects outside of my scope of interest. I’ve lost contracts and had salary cuts. Each time, I’ve made it through but not without effort and support. If you’re feeling stuck in your career and dream of pursuing something more satisfying, keep reading for my suggestions based on what I did to get back my career back on track.

Adjust Your Attitude

are two constituent groups I feel connected to, and I give 100% to my volunteer efforts. In turn, I have made good friends, launched some major projects, and honed some important skills while providing value. Volunteering and pursuing interests are great ways to get some perspective and have fun.

right along with life. Dwelling on the unfairness of it all can lead to anger, frustration and a lack of clarity. These negative attitudes diminish your ability to be objective. It’s at the moments when we feel most frustrated that creativity can kick in. Some of the best solutions emerge from a desire for change and improvement. You don’t have to deny your feelings of disappointment, but this state of dissatisfaction has to be viewed a temporary state if you’re to get back on track.

Be Honest and Ask for Help

Do Something about Your Situation

Evaluate your progress, set a goal and make some plans. If you’re not where you want to be in your life and career, ask yourself where you do want to be and brainstorm what you can do to get there. Will updating your skills generate more career options? Can you pursue your passion work in your free time? Can you take on contract work to generate more income and expand your skill set? Are there viable opportunities outside of your field you can transition into? Do some investigation to see what’s out there for you. Talk with other people to get ideas, insight and feedback. Then create a realistic action plan for achieving your goals and take action.

Connect with Others

A Genuine Difference... With Distinction for over 80 years

When things aren’t going well, we all have the tendency to hide the truth. If you hide behind a façade people will assume everything is good and won’t extend opportunities or suggestions. Countless times I’ve had people tell me about great opportunities, then discount my interest assuming I was too busy to participate. The reality was that I definitely could have used the business It’s important to keep in mind that while it may feel like you’re alone in this situation, you’re not the first person to hit a snag in your career. If you’re honest with people, you’d be surprised at how sympathetic and even helpful they can be. I’m not talking about whining and complaining. I’m talking about admitting that things are not going as well as you’d like, but you’re working on improving them. It’s even better if you have some clarity about your aspirations. It’s been my experience that pursuing passion is often a balancing act rather than an either/or proposition. Markell R.
