DESIGNED AND TESTED FOR RELIABLE SURVEILLANCE
AN EYE ON SURVEILLANCE According to a recent market report published by Lucintel, the global video surveillance market is expected to reach an estimated $39.3 billion by 2023 and it is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 9.3% from 2018 to 2023. While the key propellers for this growth are increased adoption of IP based cameras, growing smart cities, smart government and smart home applications the key drivers for this growth are real time access and integration of wireless technologies, real-time data analytics and the affordability of IP cameras in the market today. More than 500 petabytes of data is being generated today and experts predict that this will reach approximately 4000 petabytes by the year 2023. This has led to a steeping increase in the demand for extended storage and computing capacities. At present, the video surveillance industry is witnessing a massive growth due to increase in the use of surveillance cameras for security and protection. The rise of IoT is one of the prime drivers of the surveillance and storage market. Low cost hard drives are propelling the market growth. The increasing demand for cloudbased storage and services are also one of the key facet that is driving the video surveillance storage market. 2
TOSHIBA: THE HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPIONS Joining hands with the leading IT Media House, GEC Media Group, Toshiba, in 2018, took its surveillance and storage portfolio to five markets of GCC— UAE, KSA, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait— with channel focused roundtables. The explosion of big data and the penetration of IoT devices have driven the need for increased memory capacity in enterprises and dayto-day life equally. Innovations in speed, capacity and interfaces have been re-writing the DNA of next generation enterprise storage. As data dwells in the modern enterprises as the new currency it becomes equally important to have a next-generation vault that is intricately built to not only store it but secure it as well. One of the pressing concerns that the end-users and channel champions addressed at the roundtable was the limited technology infrastructure available to support the advent of this humungous data that is being generated from CCTVs. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is yet another
high growth market for video surveillance and storage. According to reports, “projected growth in the construction market, upcoming new hotels & shopping malls along with increasing inflow of FDI
in the construction and retail sectors are some of the key factors that are resulting in the overall growth of the video surveillance systems in Saudi Arabia”. At the Storage and Surveillance 360 Roundtable, hosted by Toshiba in the Kingdom, delegates said that they are witnessing a huge demand from the customers for IP cameras and that segment is accounting for a major market share in the country. Government and Transportation sector is touted to be one of the major spenders and adopters of IP video surveillance. Economists are predicting that the market is anticipated to bounce back with recovery of oil prices post 2017. Also, growing security concerns and rising crime rate in Saudi Arabia are further expected to propel the growth of video surveillance market during the forecast period.
With increasing in scales of security camera systems, the number of HDDs for storing video data is also increasing. Number of HDDs need to record for one month with a full HD camera (HDD size: 2TB)*

THE STORAGE EDGE One of the major challenges that the video surveillance storage market is facing today is the varying regulations laid by the regional governments in the storage limit of recorded data. According to studies, government and defense are the major sectors using surveillance storage solutions. Falling prices of hard disk drives (HDDs) is allowing the end users to store large volume of data, further encouraging the demand for surveillance storage space. Since entering the hard disk market in 1967 with a 14-inch model, Toshiba has led the industry for half a century. The company has repeatedly succeeded in making its products more compact and achieving higher capacities before other companies in the market have. According to Toshiba, within the next 5 -10 years, it will be physically impossible to manufacture sufficient number of SSDs to replace the existing HDD installed Base. In an attempt to be at the edge of the market demands, Toshiba invests 6% of its net revenue in R&D, ie about 3 billion dollars in invested every year Quoting a Global report, “the global video surveillance storage market is segmented on the basis of storage technology, type of storage, deployment, services, organization size, vertical and region. On the basis of storage technology the market is further classified into Network Attached Storage (NAS), Storage Area Network (SAN), and Direct Attached Storage (DAS). On the basis of storage type the market is further classified into Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), Solid State Drives (SDDs). On the basis of deployment, the market is further classified into oncloud and on-premise.” 6
