To the balance sheet and beyond

Investments are pouring in, acquisitions are leading the way, predictions are going helterskelter and diversification is emerging as the novel way of tapping unconquered territories. If these are a pretty lot to go in one sentence, then imagine a market that is witnessing all of these. A few days back, Avaya rang the opening bell and started trading in the NYSE and soon after that the company also acquired Spoken Communications—a transaction that will be funded by cash including 170 patents and patent applications. Three tech giants are in the race to become America’s first $1tn company— Apple, Amazon and Alphabet. While Apple rose to its current balance sheet with record sales for iPhone 10, Amazon’s AWS has helped the company climb up the curve, apart from an increased investment in Alexa. Alphabet or rather Google’s market dominance in AI is set to go up the ladder, but still experts say that the majority revenue comes from its search engine ads and YouTube. Coming to the region, investments in Fintech and Blockchain have been soaring. Our cover story on Fintech market in this issue talks about the disruption in the financial services market and features some fintech start-ups who have some niche offerings for the enterprises. 3D printing is one more area where a lot of investment in pouring in, specially from the government, in line with the Dubai 3D print strategy— aiming 25% of the regional infrastructure to be 3D printed by 2030. Diversifying from oil, KSA is up for a complete economic upheaval, following vision 2030. Our focus story delves into the discrete models of investment in the kingdom. 2018 seems to be a good year. Clever decisions and mindful investments would surely go a long way in addressing the existing pain points. We would definitely be seeing some great acquisitions coming along in the next quarters. All the above aiming for one aspect— living the digital reality and providing ultimate customer experience. Adding profits to the balance sheet would definitely be the priority for any business; the race to revenue will certainly continue and being in technology business would definitely open more doors of opportunity. There is a lot to be discussed and showcased. Niche technology offerings and some cutting edge case studies are up for showcase at The Future IT Summit 2018. Do note down the date; 14th March 2018. Witness the coming together of over 150 C-level execs as digitization is set to take the center stage. Happy reading! ë

The UAE university students can now use Artificial Intelligence to help them successfully transition into the working world. Using a built-in AI powered skills gap analysis software, an online platform TrainingCalender.com, will tell students what skills they need to build on to pursue their chosen career path. Partnered with more than 80 global online training providers, the platform will also suggest what training a person requires to fit a certain job role, with discounts on such courses also available. Through manually inputting data which is then analysed through AI, the TrainingCalendar platform will tell a visitor which job is more relevant to them, using a percentage match indicator. Partnered with six executive education providers including Harvard University in the United States, universities can also utilise the platform by posting details of a particular curriculum or course online. The AI-powered software will then tell the user what the skills outcome of that course/curriculum will be and what jobs graduates can apply for. Additionally, the platform will tell you where you can study the course too.

WORLDWIDE SEMICONDUCTOR REVENUE GREW 22.2 PERCENT IN 2017- GARTNER Worldwide semiconductor revenue totalled $419.7 billion in 2017, a 22.2 percent increase from 2016, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. Undersupply helped drive 64 percent revenue growth in the memory market, which accounted for 31 percent of total semiconductor revenue in 2017. “The largest memory supplier, Samsung Electronics, gained the most market share and took the No. 1 position from Intel — the first time Intel has been toppled since 1992,” said Andrew Norwood, research vice president at Gartner. “Memory accounted for more than two-thirds of all semiconductor revenue growth in 2017, and became the largest semiconductor category.” The key driver behind the booming memory revenue was higher prices due to a supply shortage. NAND flash prices increased year over year for the first time ever, up 17 percent, while DRAM prices rose 44 percent. Other major memory vendors, including SK Hynix and Micron Technology, also performed strongly in 2017 and rose in the rankings. Second-placed Intel grew its revenue 6.7 percent in 2017, driven by 6 percent growth in data center processor revenue due to demand from cloud and communications service providers. Intel’s PC processor revenue grew more slowly at 1.9 percent, but average PC prices are on the rise again after years of decline following the market’s shift from traditional desktops toward two-in-one and ultramobile devices.

WITH A FOCUSED PLAN FOR 2018, THE ORGANIZATION WILL BE WORKING ON SPECIFIC PAIN AREAS THAT GOVERNMENTS ACROSS THE GLOBE HAVE.
In brief, tell us about your portfolio and your major achievements/partnerships of 2017. About two years back we saw a major shift globally where technologies like Blockchain, AI and Smart City enablement were about to evolve the landscape. Since our technology teams are well versed with domestic and international tech trends we took it as a chal-lenge to innovate our product portfolio and build solutions like Cipher (our blockchain implementation platform) and Impulse (Our AI enablement and cognitive platform). Our Major Achievements for 2017 have been that Cipher was chosen by the Smart Du-bai Office for the implementation of a city wide blockchain based reconciliation and settlement solution for government funds. We were also signed by the Dubai Health Authority to build a Medical Emergency nerve center for the city of Dubai. You have been propagating about your industry oriented approach. What does ‘industry oriented’ approach mean? Since we work across geographies, early adoption and propagation of technology are at the heart of our operations. We make sure our customers have first-hand information about their industry’s outlook on technology. Through our expertise in working with both public and private sector organizations, we get all stakeholders on one table and help them build technology that will reshape the lives of millions of consumers across continents.
Whether its building a healthcare system of the future, an asset management solution that reduces friction and increases transparency or an e-governance use case that increases responsiveness & availability to its citizens; we are in a position to help build cities of the future. What trends do you predict for Blockchain this year? The answer to this question depends on the city’s or countries’ drive to embrace the transformative power of blockchain. We have examples from Dubai which is building up a citywide blockchain infrastructure to port all government entities on it. Countries like Estonia which worked on blockchain based ID solutions (e-Estonia). We see a future where more states will move past experimentation and get down to actually building solutions around pain areas like land reforms, Tax Evasion, Healthcare, E-Governance etc. Tell us about your Joint Product Development Service. Avanza Solutions is a product company first & foremost. That being said, we have been working with key partners for years to engineer solutions that offer our customers a well-rounded product experience. Our engineering excellence, coupled with our rapid response time and local foot print in the Middle East make us an ideal fit for both our customers and our partners in moving their organizations forward. We wouldn’t call it a service rather a carefully explored strategic alliance to offer the Avanza edge to all stakeholders. What is your roadmap for 2018? The three areas where we feel the most work is required are Improving Efficiency, Building Trust and Transparency. Our focus will be to help public & private sector entities build these into their core, so that they can offer customers a much better user experience in the years to come. ë

The most challenging phase for your business has been In fact, in the current competitive market conditions, every segment in the “business life cycle” has become challenging. However, according to my experience, the “startup” process out of the rest of the processes (development, startup, growth, expansion & maturity) is the most challenging one. The main challenge in this phase is the huge amount of RISK that the business has to face in delivering a new product in to the market in order to gain the expected rewards. In this phase, listening to the feedback of initial customers and taking step to improve their satisfaction is key for the long-term success of the business.
Your market verdict – We all operate our business in an everexpanding IT oriented market condition. Meaning, that new technologies will continuously flow in to the market by outdating the existing solutions rapidly. Therefore, the key for success in this IT oriented market environment will be determined mainly by how soon an organization will acquire and adopt to these new technologies. Accordingly, the existing and upcoming organizations should be ready to invest enough funds to continuously upgrade the IT infrastructure in line with market changes and requirements.
What technology or solution would you be looking into to improve your business operations? In order to improve the business operation and guest experience in our group I look forward to implementing following solutions. l Mobile communication and automation - For instance, technology driven check-in for the guests by saving time and proving more flexibility. To introduce a Concierge App (Pocket Concierge) which can be used to access all concierge related services in a personalized manner. l NFC technology and the Smart Room Keys - This solution will completely eliminate the manual key cards. Instead a mobile will allow the guest to access the door by simply placing the phone against the key card reader. This will ensure another innovative way to improve the guest experience with a key less entry to the room. l Integrated Seamless Experience - This solution will improve the effectiveness and

In line with overall business plan, I am glad to share my resolution for year 2018 which has been set with the goal of implementing a centralized IT environment for the group. Following points are the main highlights of the goals set. l To obtain latest and most advanced hardware and software compatible with the requirements of the organization for centralization of the entire IT function. l To maintain the capital expenditure of this project at a very effective and competitive level as approved by the annual corporate capex budget. l To draft and issue all corporate IT policies, flowcharts and procedures pertaining to this major implementation. l To provide all concerned users with necessary IT training to assist in adopting to the new centralized IT environment. ë

efore we start talking about Fintech, let us draw our attention to a word here. Unbanked— what relevance does this word hold in a world, that we claim is, standing on the disruptive platform of IoT and artificial intelligence. Let me cite an interesting study. Despite the high penetration of smartphones and widespread internet connectivity, more than 80% of the population in the GCC region are ‘unbanked’ and every three in four banks customers are ready to switch their banks if they are given a better digital banking experience. Dubai is set to become a leader in Fintech, going by the numerous studies and reports, and we believe that the time is just right and ripe. The need for increased customer satisfaction is driving the necessity and need for better, improved, agile and cost optimized services that not only come to your ‘phone’step but also give you the luxury of an omnichannel and omnigateway experience.
THE MARKET UPHEAVEL The great agenda of the GCC countries in leaving behind their oil legacies and investing in diversified sectors have led the way for small and medium businesses to rise up to the scene. Fintech is further fueling this spring. Last year, FinTech Hive was set up at the DIFC, the first FinTech accelerator in the region. It has since become the most popular FinTech programme in the region, attracting over 45 global, regional and local partners and participants. DIFC recently announced plans to triple its commitment to FinTech for 2018 with a focus on RegTech and InsurTech. The centre is also launching a $100 million fund to support incubating and growth stage firms and to ensure that its FinTech proposition is the most comprehensive in the region. The accelerator programme, launched in
partnership with Accenture, is a key component of FinTech Hive at DIFC. It consists of a 12-week curriculum in which a group of selected finalists work closely with financial institutions and other stakeholders. “We received an overwhelming number of applications for the programme — a testament to the demand for such an initiative — and the quality of proposals was very impressive,” said Raja Al Mazrouei, Acting Executive Vice President of FinTech Hive at DIFC. The programme will run for 12 weeks. In the first phase, each finalist will meet with executives from the accelerator’s financial institution partners — including Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Citi, Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates Islamic, Emirates NBD, HSBC, Mashreq, Network International, RAKBANK, Standard Chartered and Visa — in which they will discuss industry challenges and possible solutions to address them. Participants will also meet with representatives from strategic partners, Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC) and UAE Exchange. Various fintech start-ups and emerging players have tried and tested this and are relying heavily on the impact of blockchain in fintech that would facilitates secure transactions without tampering the security protocols of either party involved. Propelling this drive further, we saw Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) putting up the first ‘regulatory sandbox’ that filters the solutions to be compliant with the security and governance regulations of the region. n the developing regions such as Middle East, 3D printing is witnessing impressive growth. Dubai has long been at the forefront of 3D printing developments, particularly in terms of implementing the technology into the local infrastructure. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai launched the ‘Dubai 3D Printing Strategy’, a unique global initiative that aims to exploit technology for the service of humanity and promote the status of the United Arab Emirates and Dubai
as a leading hub of 3D printing technology by the year 2030.
UAE’S VISION 2030 The key goal of the country is to ensure that 25% of the buildings in Dubai are based on 3D printing technology by 2030. The ‘Dubai 3D Printing Strategy’ launched by His Highness adopts an emerging technology that will help cut cost in many sectors, especially the medical and construction sector in Dubai. The technology will restructure economies and labour markets, and redefine productivity. Through
the 3D Printing Strategy, the country aims to make Dubai a global hub for the development of this technology and a base for research and development in this area. The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has been one of the important organizations in positioning Dubai as one of the leaders globally in infrastructure achievements. In November 2017, RTA revealed its plans to implement 3D printing in projects as a part of its commitment to the country’s Smart City initiative. COMBATING NEW AGE THREATS WITH AI BY PROVIDING CUSTOMIZED, PERSONALIZED DEMOS THAT SHOW EFFECTIVE USE CASES OF THEIR PROPRIETARY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PLATFORM, PALADION SHARES WITH ECMEA HOW THEY COMBAT THREATS RIGHT FROM DETECTING TO MITIGATING IT.
you see cyber adversaries using AI in cyber-attacks? While AI may only be an emerging technology in the Middle East, it is a more mature technology in other parts of the world. Cybercriminals from those regions can deploy their AI-driven attacks anywhere— including in the Middle East. And it is inevitable that these cyber adversaries will successfully deploy AI in their cyberattacks. AI will make every cybercriminal smarter, faster, and more adaptive. You ask me why our AI driven MDR service is reliable. This is in fact the question we advise security buyers to ask, because there are a lot of empty claims by other vendors of use of AI in cyber security. It is important for consumers to ask for a demonstration of how a vendor is using AI. Paladion provides custom, personalized demos that show effective use cases of our proprietary AI platform in combating today’s threats. We have also deployed our AI driven MDR service in several leading enterprises in the Middle East, US and several other regions across the world.
AMIT ROY,
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND REGIONAL HEAD FOR EMEA AT PALADION
Artificial Intelligence is just an emerging technology in the region. How is your MDR service powered by AI reliable to customers? Or how do
Share with us a glimpse of the MDR cycle right from detecting a threat to mitigating it. Our MDR cycle begins before we even detect a threat. We begin with Threat Anticipation, where we process daily global threat data and detail specific actions our customers should take to defend against incoming relevant threats. We also perform continuous Threat Hunting, applying data science and machine learning models to our customer’s networks, to detect anomalies and uncover unknown and hidden threats. In addition, we provide advanced Security Monitoring to detect known attacks in real-time. From this data, we offer incident analysis services. We triage our customer’s alerts, focus on the most relevant threats and then investigate them to determine if an incident needs attention. Provided there’s a problem, we immediately begin Incident Response. We orchestrate a
full response in minutes to contain, remediate and recover from the threat. Finally, for those enterprises that come to us only after there is a breach or have a breach response retainer with us, we provide Breach Management, which provide forensics, assessment of impact on compliance, best practices for breach notifications, and full recovery from a breach. How CIO friendly is your MDR service and how can it benefit the enterprises? Paladion is the first MSSP to offer mature AI Driven MDR Services in this region. Our MDR services assists CIO’s to take decisive actions to strengthen their Cyber Security and benefits enterprises by: l Detecting unknown threats and low foot print attack campaigns l Reducing the time to respond to threats by quickly analyzing incidents and acting l Prioritizing vulnerabilities which needs to be remediated using contextual data l Providing expert assistance to organizations that have experienced a breach What strategies do you have in place for 2018? We are in the final stages of setting up our 1st Regional Managed Detection and Response Command Center (SOC) in Dubai, which would be operational from the 1st Quarter of 2018. The regional Command Center would become an active part of our Global network of SOC’s providing 24/7 AI Driven MDR Services that combine global threat intelligence with a regional outlook. We plan to extend our reach to newer geographies in MEA through a direct as well as a partner network, while at the same time strengthening our growth in the present markets. We also plan to replicate our success in Banking and finance and Government to verticals such as Health care, Retail and the Education Sector in 2018. ë

The land of Saudi has a treasure of natural resources apart from oil. It has promising sites of minerals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, platinum and other strategic materials. The country signed a $7 billion joint venture agreement with a metal group to mine bauxite reserves in the northern part of the kingdom. The plan is to produce 720,000 tons of aluminium per year. The company is investing in developing new ways to make the internal combustion engine more efficient and if successful in its efforts, it would be not only the world’s biggest oil producer, but also the owner of technology that makes its main selling product last longer.
NEOM PROJECT In October 2017, the government of Saudi revealed its plans to build a $500 billion mega city spanning three countries which will reshape the kingdom’s economy. The project called NEOM, will measure 10,230 square miles and powered completely by renewable energy, creating a pollution free environment. NEOM’s larger goal is to lessen the country’s reliance on oil exports which could expand Saudi’s economy. The city will focus on a variety of industries, including energy and water, biotechnology, food, advanced
manufacturing, and entertainment.
PLANNING AHEAD TO A NEW FUTURE The Kingdom looks at digitalization as an opportunity to enhance the lives of its citizens and drive economic progress. It expects ICT usage and digitalization to accelerate the execution of the Vision 2030 blueprint, driving economicdevelopment and enhancing national security.Among other sectors like manufacturing, mining tourism and healthcare sectorswill also benefit by embracing emerging technologies to enhance the services they offer. IoT will play a key role in the development of remote health monitoring as well as in enhancing overall access to health care. The Kingdom is transforming not only to be future ready but also to create future initiatives which are not surrounded their traditional strength of oil and gas. ë

rganizations and cities in the GCC are going through a massive transformation. Both are riding the bandwagon of being ‘Smart’ and ‘Intelligence-driven’. From automated and digitized organizational infrastructure to smart roads, smart meters and smart grids in the city, IoT and data analytics are driving the race. According to Data Age 2025, a report from Seagate and analyst firm IDC, it is predicted that data creation will swell to a total of 163 zettabytes (ZB) by 2025. Machine learning, automation and machine-to-machine technologies are shifting the bulk of data creation from consumers to the enterprise; in 2025 enterprises will create 60 percent of the world’s data. Seagate has seen a massive growth in their surveillance and storage portfolio in 2017. Stephen Jones, Surveillance Sales Engineer at Seagate said, “We closed our financial year very strongly with record shipments. We believe that we are very strongly positioned in the surveillance market and have an equally strong portfolio of surveillance and storage products.” At Intersec 2018 Seagate exhibited its industry leading surveillance storage technologies, with demonstrations of its SkyHawk, SkyHawk AI and Exos X12 products and solutions from partners Hikvision and Dahua. “Skyhawk is from our hard drive family that is specifically designed and optimized for AI applications. AI and machine learning are the buzzwords now. Though, at this moment, we are not certain where this trend will lead to in future, this is what people are excited about now. Today we are in a unique position to offer anything from HDD to surveillance to flash,” he adds. Talking about the clash between providing customers with memory enough to store the massive amount of data and giving them the
facility to store what’s important and what’s not important, Stephen says, “Recording mundane amount of video recordings and retaining it is not what your operators want but to be alerted on what is important. Here, video analytics and AI plays a pivotal role. Our solutions and products deliver accurate, real time information to the operators so that they can efficiently drive the operations and also provide high level surveillance report. Furthermore, the largest component of this future growth will be in embedded devices such as security cameras, smart meters, chip cards and vending machines. Technology – and storage in particular – will have an increasingly important role in tapping the potential of all this data,” he adds. Talking about the future of enterprise storage, Stephen says that they are seeing a move to the edge. “The term edge is enterprise hardened storage that does not reside in poor or traditional data centers as we see a massive improvement in the processing power in the end device— here the end device being the camera. We will see more storage at the edge. It records the video, analyzes it, puts it to storage then retain the information for a period of time and take out the important stuff and offload that to the traditional cloud. This is where we see the future of storage going.” Seagate is also investing heavily in its partner program. “We have recently changed our partner program and now it is called the Seagate insider. It is specifically designed for the Sis. From a strategic point of view, we see a demand creation in the market from the System Integrators.” Stephen signs off by saying that simplicity defines the entire Seagate portfolio. “Our message is very simple—right drive, right application. ë

017 was a special year for Genetec, according to Firas Jadalla, Regional Director, META at Genetec, as the company could see a steady movement in the market for unified solutions. As a company that offers a broad portfolio of security, intelligence and operations solutions, this movement from integrated solutions to unified solutions strikes a meaningful chord. “Unified solutions are a step ahead of integrated solutions where a single platform can handle different task with the same interface,” says Firas. The market has been looking for more and more simplified solutions. When we talk about unification, it is about simplification. If you integrate multiple solutions you have different technologies talking to each other. Today we can see a majority of the solutions moving to the cloud. To provide cloud services, you have to give an easy to use interface. For eg; we have our solution for enterprise which is an advanced video management platform. The interface is easy and the operator can use it with zero training. Similarly, we have a lot of solutions in our portfolio that can be deployed with zero training.” Talking about Genetec’s go-to- market strategy, Firas says “We expanded to new territories and we have been going very aggressively to the market. We have always relied heavily relying on our channel to go to market and this trend will continue. We are hiring new business development managers who would be approaching the end users and educating them more about the market and our solutions portfolio.” The company has also simplified their software selling process, known as the perpetual license. “That is the way we have been selling for the past 20 years . But now customers are looking for subscription models as they are not willing to pay upfront. We were one of the few companies worldwide to offer the video management platform through

subscription while keeping our old way of selling software through perpetual license.” Genetec recently unveiled Citigraf, a decision support system that unifies public safety operations across city departments for interagency collaboration. Apart from that, the company also released the latest version of its Security Center 5.7. This latest version allows users to make insight-driven decisions based on security and analytics data. Security Center 5.7 now automatically identifies edge devices and cameras that need firmware updates, helping assure network protection, integrity, and ‘Security of Security’. Genetec Airport Sense is a new analytics solution that offers a deeper understanding of airport operations and passenger flow by tapping into existing security cameras and sensors for operational insights. Talking about the differences and similarities in Middle East and other countries, Firas says that, “Worldwide the demand or awareness for security solutions has been growing over the last few years . What characterizes this market is that the growth of security market in the Middle East has been growing way higher than the rest of the world. The ME market has its own specifications and regulations when it comes to solutions like the Cloud.” In 2018, Genetec will be investing more in its channel. The company will be seen hiring more Business Development managers who will be responsible for creating awareness and demand for their solutions in the market and acting as a consultation arm for the customers and partners. We are approaching the market with applications, apart from solutions and services, that are tailored for certain verticals and sectors. We have released an application for retail, law enforcement, airports, banks etc. In 2018 we would be introducing more applications tailored for different markets.” ë

GO FORWARD WITH RUBRIK AS HYPERCONVERGENCE DAWNS ON THE REGIONAL ENTERPRISES AS THE NEW REALITY, RUBRIK CLAIMS THAT THEY HAVE REPLACED 20 YEAR OLD BACKUP TECHNOLOGIES WITH A SYSTEM THAT DELIVERS CLOUDSCALE, SIMPLIFIED, AND AUTOMATED DATA MANAGEMENT. AN EXCLUSIVE RENDEZVOUS WITH MOHAMMED AL TAMIMI, REGIONAL DIRECTOR, MIDDLE EAST FOR RUBRIK ON THE COMPANIES GOFORWARD SLOGAN, BAAS AND VREALIZATION PLATFORM.
What was Rubrik’s gamechanging offering for the opexsavvy customer? Rubrik’s converged and wescale approach in combination with our SLA based management leads to an unprecedented reduction of operational cost. Many of our customers including our BaaS partners got triggered by this when embracing Rubrik.
MOHAMMED AL TAMIMI,
REGIONAL DIRECTOR, MIDDLE EAST FOR RUBRIK
For the Data center backup and recovery market, how has the year 2017 been? What kind of customer mindset dominated the market? 2017 has been great. Revolutionary change in the primary part of company’s datacenter did lead even more to gaps with regards to backup and recovery being too slow, overly complex and overall incumbent solutions being way too expensive. Those pains as well as strategic initiative drove more than ever the need for change.
One of your solution tagline reads ‘Immutability for Ransomware’- What is the claim behind this? How advanced is your ‘recovery with no data loss’ platform? Applications and data are instantly accessible in an immutable format that is native to the Rubrik platform to safeguard against any attack with days, weeks or months of point-in-time instant recovery. Our filesystem is not accessible over File Services like many traditional backup software and hardware platforms and we don’t utilise a traditional Windows or Unix standard backup server as everything is managed by the Rubrik cluster intelligence. When a backupserver, proxy or fileserver mounts are infected, so are the backups or metadate in the solution of most vendors, this is not the case with Rubrik. What is your review of the Middle East market? Draw some examples from your recent customer wins or studies? l We focus on all verticals, industries and enterprises, as we all know that data matters to all the sectors. l All of our customers today in the Middle East decided to GoForward with Rubrik because of our simplicity, scalability and most of all reducing their TCO, after all, our slogan is #Don’t_Backup_Go_Forward” l Two of our major projects was to build an
“in-country” public cloud by partnering with local service providers where we built it in UAE and KSA to enable customer utilize important services such as “backup as a service”, “archival as a service” and “DR as a service” while making sure that the data doesn’t leave their country. Tell us more about the vRealize platform? What is the competitive edge of it and what added value does it give to the enterprises? Using the automation and orchestration capabilities of the vRealize platform and the 100% RESTful API interface of Rubrik, customers are able to create, manage and report all aspects of data protection and recovery. Rubrik supplies customers with dozens of preconfigured workflows and API commands using the public online repository Github to integrate our technology with vRealize. In 2018, for customers who are looking towards modernizing their backup and unlocking new cloud potentials, what is the Rubrik promise that you are offering? Rubrik replaces 20 year old backup technologies with a system that delivers cloudscale, simplified, and automated data management. Rubrik can protect machines in the public cloud, archive old data to the cloud or even protect, convert and instantiate on-premises machines in the public cloud for DR. Combined with our RESTful API we can build a fully automated cloud data management platform for customers that are making their first step to the cloud or build a private cloud services portal. Our software was designed and developed from the ground up in the public cloud era. All its capabilities are build with current and future cloud technologies in mind, giving customers the promise that whatever steps they are taking towards the cloud, Rubrik can deliver their data management needs. ë

adi Kanafani, Regional Director Middle East & Africa for NetApp considers NetApp’s participation debut as a strong message to the market conveying the company’s capabilities in providing strong physical security solutions. “We want to reinforce our position in the market showing that NetApp is a very strong player when it comes to physical security and has very rich offerings with its tech partners like Bosch, Milestone, Ipsotek, and videoNEXT and show that we not only play on premise but we also have cloud solutions that can support video surveillance, access control etc. Market research shows that demand for security cameras in the Middle East is continuously growing, consequently boosting demand for data storage in the surveillance market. In the UAE, video surveillance spending could reach USD 197.8 million by 2021. The GCC video surveillance storage market is seen to expand at an annual growth rate of over 8.5 per cent from 2017 to 2023. However, capturing and retaining data from security cameras pose greater difficulty as higher resolutions are needed and retaining images for longer periods could slow video recall performance. The increased demand for surveillance infrastructures also calls for bigger video storage capacity. Speaking about inducing simplicity into the solutions offered, Fadi says NetApp has addressed these concerns by providing a complete line of external storage systems, which can deliver volume, speed, reliability and stability. The company expects its E-Series solution to meet the growing demand from customers seeking more flexibility in their data management requirements. The technology
is designed to meet the bandwidth-intensive streaming requirements of next-generation security cameras. NetApp is also making sure that their ecosystem partners are up to date with the latest offerings and are empowered to take their solutions to the market. Fastlane is NetApp university’s authorized training center. “Through Fastlane, we offer certification programs to enable the channel partners. We have also realized that partners that deliver solutions around physical security are different from those offering data center solutions. So, there are different kind of training programs for different ecosystem partners.” Fadi believes that the emerging technologies in security have been successful in bridging the gap between the public and the private sector. The emergence of smart cities and smart organizations have created a set of standards and norms that both the private and public sector have to follow. “The private sectors need to adhere to the compliances and standards set by the government bodies like the ministry of interior, municipalities etc. As we always say, security is a shared responsibility and we can see the government organizations taking some active steps towards setting necessary regulations.” During Intersec 2018 NetApp also featured a range of new data storage solutions for enterprises such as the new FlexPod SF, the world’s first enterprise-scale hyper converged infrastructure (HCI) solution built on the innovative SolidFire all-flash technology, and the ONTAP 9.3 data management software, which makes performance easier with Adaptive Quality of Service (QoS) and enhances security and compliance for enterprises. ë

AI, Cloud Control and Data Stewardship In the same way that a CFO sets out the strategy and framework for investment and cash flow, CIOs and CTOs need to take control of making dataflow work for their organizations.
Data is now a currency, but one which carries extra responsibility for the holder, especially where our personal information is involved. This data currency will come under regulation in 2018, where failing to get a clean audit will have similar reputational and monetary consequences as failing a finance audit. Against this backdrop, below are four factors that CIOs and CTOs should consider, to ensure that they get the most value from their organizations’ data. CLOUD CONTROL – HYBRID ARCHITECTURES WILL DOMINATE As the transition from virtualization to cloudnative and containerized applications gathers momentum, there will be an increasing focus on seamless private/public cloud application and data mobility through to 2020. Those technologies which are able to integrate security with performance and multi-tenancy to enable this mobility on-demand, will become the market and mind-share leaders. Being able to efficiently migrate and repatriate data is going to be a key feature of cloud capability as organizations review the splits between where applications and data are most advantageously hosted from both a legal and operational perspective. Returning data to centralized pools in each legislative region

is likely to become more common. This will increasingly be augmented by directly linked high performance storage and compute at a local level, for mission critical real time or highly sensitive applications. DATA STEWARDSHIP MUST BECOME A CORE COMPETENCY IN 2018 Becoming an exemplary data steward or responding effectively to security incidents, is near impossible with systems that take days to backup, index or restore data. To get to the stage where this level of control and safeguarding is possible we are going to see significant investment during 2018 in faster networks, search and indexing. Tools and platforms to improve the visibility, manageability and performance of data pipelines in general will also see substantial investment. That said, organizations that rely on technology alone for GDPR compliance will struggle. There will also be significant cultural and procedural changes needed to achieve and maintain GDPR compliance. The right cultural approaches need to be led by senior management, and the right tools need to be implemented to support that behavior. LEVERAGING AI AND MACHINE
LEARNING I believe that, across the full range of businesses, the benefits of Machine Learning (ML) are going to be felt more immediately. ML’s quick wins will be lower down in the business technology stack. ML based automation is already proven to save hours each day in the routine administration of IT infrastructure. Instrumenting systems, via the IoT, and using ML to analyse the data, delivers valuable, actionable information which can be used to automatically resolve issues before they have a business impact. STORAGE CONVERSATIONS SHOULD BECOME DATA CONVERSATIONS Being able to shift data and workloads between clouds to take advantage of multi-cloud and hybrid architectures as cloud usage and the data regulation landscape evolves, is going to become a key capability for IT teams. In parallel, getting data storage infrastructure and dataflow right will be essential to equip organizations to take advantage of the machine learning and AI technologies that leading businesses are already deploying. As we head in to 2018, the onus is on CIOs and CTOs to ensure that their data storage strategy and infrastructure allows the organization to extract maximum value from their data. ë

Other Major challenges for 2017 A major worry was the global Ransomware attack, but from the ICT market studies and feedback, we have already implemented Anti Ransomware measures including user awareness campaigns and other counter measures. So, we were all set to face the Ransomware attack challenge. ISO implementation was another challenge. ICT Department played key role by working closely with other departments to achieve our ISO Certification. How is digitization changing your organization and what is your contribution? As ICT is the backbone of any healthcare business, our management has adopted state of art technologies wherever possible. Our digital health Information system uses the most advanced technologies which contribute to advancing electronic medical records, CURE’s IT and informatics workforce competencies. We played a key
role in brainstorming sessions, technology evaluation, vendor evaluation and project implementation to ensure that all adopted technologies are compatible with existing solutions, user-friendly, and above-all cost-effective. Various technologies like patient monitoring tools, wearables have penetrated the healthcare sector. How far have these trends disrupted your organization?
