director' S note S

“When I add up the balance sheet of my life, the numbers say I am happy.” This quote from Juliana in The Other Place resonates with me. What makes up the balance sheet of our lives? Certainly our family, those we love, our careers, our passions, our accomplishments, our celebrations. What are these things in essence, though, but memories? While there are some tangibles such as photos, videos, etc…our only true memories, our only true treasures are located inside our minds. Each of us sees the world through unique eyes and our point of view. We cannot completely communicate ourselves to another; no one can completely know us. So what happens when our sense of self, our own reckoning of who we are, what we know, what we believe comes into question?

This is the story of an epic battle. But, it's also a love story and a story about hope. We all have “other places” where our souls find peace. We seek a place—whether physical or mental—where we feel safe. Sometimes these places exist on a map, sometimes in our souls. This is a play about the journey of one woman to find that place, perhaps find it anew.

As a director, my point of the view of a script is simply that: my point of view. It evolves with the cast, it takes shape as I try to put myself in your seat, that of the audience, but how I approach it is totally unique compared to other directors. Each show is unique in the way that each of us is unique. When a show “haunts” me I know I must find a way to present it. The Other Place tugged at my sleeve and refused to be forgotten. It is my hope that you will connect with Sharr White’s beautiful play, the words and the characters he has created, and that perhaps as you leave this performance you treasure your own world a bit more than when you arrived.

M ic H ael g. B aTH (Ian) appeared most recently in ETC's Sleeping Beauty and Hands on a Hardbody. Last season, he was seen as Dr. Chumley in Harvey (The Carnegie), Joseph in The Irish Curse (Clifton Performance Theatre), as Francis Nurse in The Crucible (Xavier University with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company), and as Passepartout in ETC's Around the World in 80 Days. His other favorite ETC roles include those in Opus, The Exonerated, Mauritius, Becky’s New Car, My Name is Asher Lev, Next Fall, and End Days. He was also seen as Mervyn in A Behanding in Spokane (Clifton Performance Theatre) and Roy Cohn in Angels in America Parts One & Two (Know Theatre), among others. He also teaches acting and improvisation for Playhouse in the Park and Afterschool Acting. He is a Wilmington College graduate and a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. Much love to his wife Trish and dog Obi.

B illy c H ace (The Man) hails from the Northern Virginia region where he received a B.A. in Theatre from George Mason University. He has since adopted Cincinnati as his artistic home as a resident ensemble member of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for seven and a half seasons. He was recently seen recently at CSC as himself in Every Christmas Story Ever Told, and has appeared as Angelo in Comedy of Errors, Tom in The Great Gatsby, Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Clown 1 in The 39 Steps, Lucio in Measure for Measure, Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice, Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost, Renfield in Dracula, and King John in The Life and Death of King John. He is also proud to have worked with New Stage Collective in Take Me Out, Unity Production’s The Wave, and Cincinnati Ballet's 2011 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He is honored to be making his debut with Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

kelly M engelkoc H (The Woman) is delighted to return to ETC for The Other Place. Originally from Kansas, she is an eleventh-year resident ensemble member with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and is happy to now call the Queen City her home. Her debut with Ensemble Theatre was last year in Tribes, and she has also performed locally with New Stage Collective, The Human Race Theatre Company, Xavier University, as well as most recently with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in A Christmas Carol. Some of her favorite memories in town with CSC have been Private Lives, The Turn of the Screw, Henry VIII: All is True, Pride and Prejudice, and Measure for Measure. She would like to send love and thanks to her many families, and especially to her ridiculously talented husband, Mr. Dubin.

regina P ug H (Juliana) was last seen at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati in Next Fall and My Name is Asher Lev. Her other favorite ETC shows include After the Fall (directed by Rebecca Miller); Buckminster Fuller: In and Out Universe (directed by Michael Burnham); Everything in the Garden (directed by Edward Albee); Fragments (directed by Edward Albee) and The Water Engine. She appeared at Cincinnati Playhouse in A Christmas Carol (1992-2011) and the world premiere of Invention for Fathers and Sons. Her other favorite projects include performing with CCM Drama students in Bury the Dead as well as roles in Harvey (The Carnegie); Equus (New Edgecliff Theatre); The History Boys (New Stage Collective); Sense and Sensibility and The Crucible (Cincinnati Shakespeare Company); The Maids (Performance Gallery); and Wait Until Dark (Downtown Theatre Classics). Ms. Pugh is a founding member of Performance Gallery, an alternative theatre collective that specializes in original work and has participated yearly in the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Her most recent directing credit was the University premiere of the new play, Black Fly Spring (Xavier Theatre) and her direction has been seen on ETC's stage in Melancholy Play, Earhart, Vigil, Why We Have a Body, and The Skriker.

D. lynn M eyers (Director) is in her sixteenth season as the Producing Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati where she has directed over fifty world and regional premieres, including Hands On A Hardbody, Rapture, Blister, Burn, Next to Normal, and The Whipping Man. She directed The Pavilion at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Pride and Prejudice for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. She directed Off- Broadway at the York Theatre with Marsha Norman’s Traveler in the Dark and James McClure’s Max and Maxie. Her several Canadian national tours included Mass Appeal with the late great Gale Gordon. As a producer for Dove Audio, she produced and directed dozens of audio books. She served as the Associate Artistic Director at Cincinnati Playhouse for several seasons where she cast over a hundred productions as well as directed. In addition to directing, she is a member of the Casting Society of America and has cast for Hallmark, PBS, CBS, BBC, HBO, Paramount, and MGM. Her feature credits include is serving as Location Casting Director for Shawshank Redemption, Carol, and Miles Ahead. She was named one of four finalists for the Zelda Fichandler National Award in 2011, honoring directors whose work is making an impact on the art form and their community. She was honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement and given the Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Continued Excellence. She is a proud graduate of Thomas More College and serves on the college’s Board of Trustees.

s H arr w H i T e's (Playwright) plays have been developed or produced at theatres across the country, including MCC Theatre, South Coast Repertory, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Marin Theatre Company, Lincoln Center Theater’s Directors Lab, Key West Theatre Festival, and more. He has been honored with a Dr. Henry and Lillian Nesburn Award as part of the Julie Harris Award in Playwriting (The Escape Velocity of Savages); a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (Six Years); and the 2009 Skye Cooper New American Play Prize (Sunlight). The Other Place received the 2010 Playwrights First Award, the 2011 Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation's Theatre Visions Fund Award, and was an Outer Critics Circle award nominee for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.

B ran D on T. H ol M es (Production Stage Manager) is currently in his third season with ETC. He holds a BFA from Wichita State University in Technical Theatre and Design. He served as Production Stage Manager for LOOK Musical Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also worked with Music Theatre Wichita for four summers where he assistant stage managed over twenty productions. He moved to Cincinnati to spend two seasons at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as a stage management intern. His other credits include the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Theatre in the Park, Kansas City Starlight, and Wichita Center for the Arts. His favorite productions include Thunder Knocking on the Door, Merrily We Roll Along (directed by John Doyle), Disney’s The Little Mermaid, The Producers, Miss Saigon, Tribes, and Sunset Boulevard. Thank you to the cast and design staff for making this fantastic experience. Love to MDRJMLAT. He is a proud Actors' Equity Association member!

jack M ur PH y (Technical Director) grew up in the Cincinnati area. He went to undergrad at Hanover College where he studied technical theatre. While there he spent his summers at several different summer stock theatres such as Georgia Shakespeare Company and the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company as a carpenter. After graduation he moved to Bellport, NY to work for The Gateway Playhouse as a carpenter and rigger. When he left Gateway, he went to work on The Pride of America, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. After another summer at the Janiec Opera Company, he came full circle and returned home to Cincinnati. Since he has been back, he has worked at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and River City Scenic as well as ETC. This is Jack’s first season with ETC and hopes to have many more exciting seasons ahead.

B rian c. M e H ring (Resident Set & Lighting Designer) has designed over 100 productions at ETC. His favorite productions include: Thom Pain (based on nothing), Next to Normal, 33 Variations, Freud's Last Session, and I Am My Own Wife. Mr. Mehring’s regional favorites for set design include: The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre.

s H annon rae lu TZ (Properties Master/Design Assistant) earned her Master’s degree in 1996 and became Prop Master at ETC. Ms. Lutz would like to thank the Cincinnati theatre community and patrons for their generous, supportive and tenacious spirit. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC Internship. Now the Director of Intern Programming, she is honored to guide ETC’s essential ensemble: the Intern Company. She would like to thank her family for their persistent love and support, Ruth D. Sawyer for lessons in art, life, and integrity, and D. Lynn Meyers for her dedication to our dreams.

c H a D PH illi P s (Costume Designer) is very excited to be back for his fifth show with Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. His other credits for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati include: The Mountaintop, Radio Golf, Gem of the Ocean, and The Whipping Man. He is employed with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as the Costume Design Assistant. He resides in Covington, Kentucky.

F i TZ P a TT on (Sound Designer) has designed and scored more than 260 productions in 20 cities across the U.S, and was the designer for I'll Eat You Last, featuring Bette Midler at The Booth. In 2010, he was awarded both Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards for his design for When the Rain Stops Falling at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, and was nominated again in 2011 for his work on The Other Place at MCC, which completed its Broadway run last winter at the Friedman. His symphony, The Holy Land, a 45-minute work for baritone, tenor, mezzo-soprano, and orchestra, was completed in January last year, and he is the founder of Chance Magazine, a new theatre design magazine that debuted last year.

willia M cusick (Video Designer) is a writer, director, and designer based in NYC. Mr. Cusick directed the award-winning film Welcome to Nowhere (Bullet Hole Road). The neo-surrealist road movie premiered as an Official Selection of the 2012 Lower East Side Film Festival in NYC, it received the 2013 Founders’ Choice Award at the Queens World Film Festival, and recently screened at the Queens Museum of Art. The film was featured on Kentucker Audley’s NoBudge.com. Mr. Cusick’s video projections for theater, opera, and dance have been seen in productions around the world, and most recently on Broadway in Sharr White’s The Other Place at Manhattan Theater Club in 2013. He received the 2007 Henry Hewes Design Award for Projection Design for Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia on Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater. Mr. Cusick is on faculty at The New School for Drama where he teaches directing for cinema and design technology. Mr. Cusick is currently in post-production on Pop Meets the Void, a musician story.

Ticke T reservaT ions & s ale P olicy

Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are a final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution. No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.

Parking

Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both are conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.

Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.

Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed. ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

Restrooms are located at the front of the lobby. Should you need to use the restroom during a performance, please exit the theatre the same way you came in. Readmittance will be at House Manager's discretion.

Please notify the box office in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have special seating needs and our staff will be happy to accommodate you. Audio-enhancement available. Generally, signinterpreted performances are on the third Wednesday of every production.

Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices (including camera phones) in the theatre. Kindly turn off any cell phones or pagers prior to the show starting. Text messaging during the show disturbs other audience members and actors and will not be tolerated. For safety reasons, audience members are strictly prohibited from standing, sitting or otherwise being or putting anything onstage at any time.
