DIRECTOR'S NOTES

The Whipping Man was the first script I read by Matthew Lopez, and I immediately requested the rights to produce it here at Ensemble. It was an astonishingly interesting look at a point in our history, which sadly resonates with our nation today. Mr. Lopez has a unique and articulate voice, one that is essential in theatre today.

The Denver Center Theatre sent out a postcard announcement about a workshop of The Legend of Georgia McBride and my attention was captured; I started looking into the script at that moment. When I finally read the play, nearly two years later, I was delighted. This is a brightly crafted confection, wrapped around a truly honest investigation into gender and personal identity. It is a truly original celebration of individuality and a testimonial to cooperation and understanding.

I am thrilled to start our Next Stage season with this contemporary, comedic, and compelling play, with a cast of ETC favorites as you’ve never seem them before. Viva Mr. Lopez, and hooray for Georgia McBride!

Thanks for taking the next step with us towards ETC’s Next Stage. You are the ones that make it possible.

It’s time to cross the line. To cross the threshold and enter a world where the ingenious and the rebellious come to play. Where the relentless and the radiant find better ways to work and create. Where the cutting-edge become the celebrated and the radicals teach the fundamentals.

He is a Wilmington College graduate and a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. Much love to his wife Trish and dog Obi.

DARNELL PIERRE BENJAMIN (Rexy/Jason) is excited—with a backup container of sequins—to saunter across the ETC stage again...in heels, no less! You may have recently seen him in Detroit '67 and last season's Cinderella. Other favorite credits include Graphic, Pones, Inc.; Angels in America, Know Theatre; Othello, Human Race Theatre Company; and A Raisin in the Sun, Hope Summer Repertory Theatre. A proud graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music Drama program and a past intern here at Ensemble Theatre, Mr. Carr has also had the good fortune to teach freshman Drama at UC-CCM. As always, he thanks Lynn for the opportunity and sends love to Mom, Dad, Erin, Lauren, Craig, and Amanda. He is a proud member of Actors' Equity Association.

Thanks to Lynn and this incredibly talented production staff for imagining such beautiful productions and creating the magic that is seen onstage. Love to MDATJKAH. Mr. Holmes is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

ELIZABETH FREYMAN (Assistant Stage Manager) is a graduate of CCM’s Stage Management Program (BFA, 2014) and is now a proud member of Actors' Equity Association. Her previous Ensemble credits include: Freud’s Last Session, Black Pearl Sings!, The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns, and Sleeping Beauty. Other selected credits include: Le nozze di Figaro (PSM), The Princeton Festival; Il Trovatore (ASM), Knoxville Opera; Magic Flute (PSM), Piedmont Opera; Street Scene (ASM), Opera North; and Der fliegende Holländer (ASM), Piedmont Opera. Love to her amazing family and the best friends.

BRIAN c. MEHRING (Resident Set & Lighting Designer) has designed over 100 productions at ETC. His favorite productions include: Thom Pain (based on nothing), Next to Normal, 33 Variations, Freud's Last Session, and I Am My Own Wife. Mr. Mehring’s regional favorites for set design include: The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre.

SHANNON RAE LUTZ (Properties Master/Design Assistant) earned her Master’s degree from UC-CCM in 1996 and became Prop Master at ETC. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1988-1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC internship. Now the Director of Apprentice Programming, she is honored to guide ETC’s essential ensemble: The Professional Acting Apprentice Company. Ms. Lutz would like to thank D. Lynn Meyers, Ruth Sawyer, and the Cincinnati theatre community and patrons for their generous, supportive, and tenacious spirit.

PRODUCTION TEAM,

JACK MURPHY (Technical Director) went to undergrad at Hanover College where he studied technical theatre. While there, he spent his summers at several different summer stock theatres such as Georgia Shakespeare Company and the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company as a carpenter. After graduation he moved to Bellport, NY to work for The Gateway Playhouse as a carpenter and rigger. When he left Gateway, he went to work on The Pride of America, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. After another summer at the Janiec Opera Company, he came full circle and returned home to Cincinnati. Since he has been back, he has also worked with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and River City Scenic.

BRIAN HORTON (Costume Designer) is originally from Cincinnati and returned last year as Interim Costume Shop Coordinator for University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. Prior to that, he was Resident Costume Designer for Ocean State Theatre in Rhode Island and last year won the Motif Award for Best Costumes for Guys and Dolls. Also a stage actor, he has played almost every classic "comic 2nd" role written, singing and dancing his way into more broken bones, sprains, and pins than he cares to remember. He joined the LA company of City of Angels and was a member of the first national tour. It's great to be back home and be a part of this amazing company.

PRODUCTION TEAM, CONTINUED

MATT CALLAHAN (Sound Designer) was the Resident Sound Designer for Actors Theatre of Louisville for seven seasons. Most recent designs include The Pavilion, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Bob, LMNO Pea, The End, Sirens, The Cherry Sisters, Ground, A Christmas Story; Detroit '67, Size Matters, Other Desert Cities, Mrs. Mannerly, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. Mr. Callahan was also a co-creator/ designer of Rock n’ Roll: The Reunion Tour. He spent two seasons as the resident sound designer at The Eugene O’Neil Center for their National Playwrights Conference. He was formerly the sound engineer for The Steppenwolf Theatre, the Assistant Engineer for Blue Man Chicago and a member of the disbanded Defiant Theatre. He received a Jeff Citation for Red Dragon, a nomination for Fortinbras, and a Kevin Kline nomination for Sherlock Holmes.

RAY "RAVEN" PAYNE (Wig & Makeup Designer/Dragologist) "Wonder Woman" was Raven's first "drag" costume and it was tailored by his father, an Army sergeant. At eight, for a church Halloween party, his mother helped to create a "Chiquita Banana" outfit. Raven's unconventional expression of gender and fashion were obvious (and fabulous) from an early age. Early influences include: the Bionic Woman, Miss Piggy, Farrah Fawcett, Daisy Duke, Elvira, Boy George, and Divine. It was the early nineties club scene where "Raven" came to life. Raven started with gigs at local bars and night clubs while studying theatre at UC-CCM. During the club kid halcyon, Raven moved to Manhattan and performed in legendary dance clubs such as Tunnel, Sound Factory, and The Palladium with DJ Junior Vasquez. Upon returning to Cincinnati, Raven embodied the title role and was the face of Hamburger Mary's. Ambrosia, Poison, Hurricane Summers, and Scirroco are Raven's Drag Mother(s). It takes a fierce village!

PATTI JAMES (Choreographer) is always happy to be back at ETC with Lynn and her staff. Her ETC credits include: Violet, Hands on a Hardbody, Next To Normal, Winter Wonderettes, Marvelous Wonderettes, Grey Gardens, and the role of Lottie in Mack and Mabel. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at CCM, teaching tap and jazz, as well as choreographing Candide, The Full Monty, Little Women, Good News, Anything Goes, Evita, Into The Woods, The Merry Widow, Big River, and Lysistrata Jones, among others. For her involvement in Cincinnati Theatre, she received the Acclaim MVP Award in 2010. For eight years, she directed and choreographed Home For the Holidays, featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. For the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, she choreographed the 2004 Today’s Tonys, and the 2007 Red, White and Boom at Riverbend. She has worked with The Northern Kentucky Symphony on Evita, The Sound of Music, and Oliver. She also choreographed the production of Mariel for the Cincinnati Playhouse, and has worked on several productions with The Carnegie in Covington. Ms. James lives with Keith, and they have two grown daughters, Alexis (husband Emmett and sons Emmett and Auggie) and Chloe (husband Eric).

BOX OFFICE POLICIES

ENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI

1127 Vine Street | Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 | www.ensemblecincinnati.org (513) 421-3555

ETC BOX OFFICE HOURS & ACCEPTED PAYMENT

Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 2 hours prior to curtain. Weekend hours vary. VISA, MC, Discover, and AmEx are accepted, as well as Downtown Gift Cards.

TICKET RESERVATIONS & SALE POLICY

Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are a final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

TAX CREDITS

If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution. No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.

PARKING

Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both are conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.

CHILDREN

Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.

LATECOMERS & ADMITTANCE

Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed. ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

RESTROOMS

Restrooms are located at the front of the lobby. Should you need to use the restroom during a performance, please exit the theatre the same way you came in. Readmittance will be at House Manager's discretion.

ACCESSIBILITY

Please notify the box office in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have special seating needs and our staff will be happy to accommodate you. Audio-enhancement available. Generally, signinterpreted performances are on the third Wednesday of every production.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES & STAGE

Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices (including camera phones) in the theatre. Kindly turn off any cell phones or pagers prior to the show starting. Text messaging during the show disturbs other audience members and actors and will not be tolerated. For safety reasons, audience members are strictly prohibited from standing, sitting or otherwise being or putting anything onstage at any time.

GROUPS & DISCOUNTS

Groups of 8 or more can save over single-ticket prices. Student rates, rush discounts, Public Radio Perks Card, AAA, ArtsWave ArtsPass, Enjoy the Arts, and educator and military member discounts available (please consult your appropriate membership(s) for details and exclusions).

THE MARKET HAD A BAD DAY.

THE MARKET HAD A BAD DAY.

DON’T

Remaining focused on the long term. OR

Medically speaking, checking one’s reflexes is an important test of the nervous system. However, in our overly deliberate opinion, the doctor’s office is the only place where knee-jerk reactions should be considered a positive. Especially when it comes to investing. We realize that it’s only natural to want to react impulsively to a down day or two, but we believe remaining steadfast is the more prudent financial decision. And while there is a time and place to take action, it should be done thoughtfully. As opposed to rapidly. Which is why every Holding

Raymond James advisor employs a slow and steady approach to financial planning. It’s a rigorously thorough process in which every decision is made with the long term in mind. When you sit down with a Raymond James financial advisor, they will take the time to tailor a plan just for you. And help you stick to it during the ups. And downs. For over 50 years, our advisors have quietly served clients differently. Go to lifewellplanned.com to learn more. It’s time to find out what a Raymond James financial advisor can do for you. LIFE WELL PLANNED.
