directors' notes

This is my ode to Raymond McAnally. Now it may not be one of those great, great odes…say to a Grecian Urn. I, frankly, enjoy Ray more than a Grecian Urn anyway. When was the last time you so laughed or simply enjoyed a Grecian Urn?!? I first saw Ray when he played Ellard in the Playhouse's production of The Foreigner. I did not direct the show but sat many, many times in rehearsal and performance. Ray proved to be a joyous Ellard: funny, sweet, and oh so human. I did direct Ray in Mrs. Mannerl y here at ETC last year. What a joyous rehearsal period that proved to be. And now you see Ray again in his play Size Matters. Certain givens: Size Matters is not a dieting play, a self help play, a do it yourself play, or any work that guides you on your way to slimness. (Does anyone really want to see that?) Size Matters is about the relationship of husband to wife and uncle to nephew. It is filled with humanity and humor. And, fortunately, for all of us every moment is filled with the uniqueness and wonderfulness that is Ray McAnally. His investment with each character and his truly extraordinary transformational abilities are a joy to behold. Past the laughs and heartache that are infused in the play, Size Matters has an extraordinary abundance of charm. Now I don't know if charm is too old fashioned and antiquated a term; I hope not. Our world can definitely use more of it. You are in for a very special event. Enjoy. Then you can write your own ode to the glories of Ray.

Ensemble Theatre is due for a celebration and the world premiere of Size Matters will allow us to do just that! As a theatre dedicated to new work, when we do a world premiere, it is always the most exciting of times. Ray McAnally’s work on Mrs. Mannerly last season was not the strongest reason for ETC to do this play. Ray himself, was the reason. His exemplification of tenacity, his dedication to detail, and his desire to connect with an audience way beyond a created character all added up to us saying 'YES, let’s do the world premiere right here, right now!' ETC is the best place on the planet to premiere this work. As the play will explain, Ray met his wife Whitney in Cincinnati at the Playhouse and Whitney has worked in Cincinnati at the over for 13 years at the Opera. Ed Stern hired Ray to be in The Foreigner at the Playhouse and that started all of these event in motion, so how could I possibly have Ray here without Ed’s direction? Ed is a master of minutia, he is specific and strategic and he’s got a laugh that can’t possibly be replicated, it simply needs to be enjoyed. Ed’s skillful direction combined with his sarcastic stunningly funny view of human nature infused this production in a rehearsal room in Kansas City while he was directing Love's Labour's Lost in the evening. I picked up the beat from KC and carried it forward here on the ETC stage these last few weeks. One actor, two directors, three people combining to tell a story which is designed to resonate with every one who experiences this production and all future productions of it. Enjoy. Thanks for being here.

rayM ond MC anally (Raymond) is very proud and honored that Size Matters is receiving its world premiere in Cincinnati and cannot thank the staff at ETC enough for the chance to tell this story. As mentioned in the play, it’s here that Raymond met his wife, Cincinnati Opera Production Stage Manager Whitney McAnally, while performing in The Foreigner at Playhouse in the Park in 2009. Even though the couple has lived in both New York and Los Angeles, Cincinnati is always a summer time second home thanks to the Opera. In 2012, Mr. McAnally returned to Cincinnati to perform the role of Jeffrey Hatcher in Mrs. Mannerly here at Ensemble Theatre. As an actor, Mr. McAnally's work can be found on both stage and screen. His theatre credits include: Defending the Caveman (Broadway National Tour, One-Man Show), God’s Ear (Off Broadway, The Vineyard Theatre & New Georges), Mrs. Mannerly (Regional, TheaterWorks Hartford), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regional, Long Wharf), among others. Mr. McAnally's television credits include: Mozart in the Jungle, Law & Order SVU, 30 Rock, Royal Pains, Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, and Lights Out, among others. His film credits include Compliance (Sundance 2012), I Don’t Know How She Does It (Weinstein Co), Ghost Town (DreamWorks), and Gods Behaving Badly, among others. He is a proud recipient of two Cincinnati stage awards: Best Lead Actor 2012-2013 for Mrs. Mannerly at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, League of Cincinnati Theatres and Outstanding Supporting Performance 2008-2009 in The Foreigner at Cincinnati Playhouse, Acclaim Awards of Cincinnati. As a playwright, Size Matters is Mr. McAnally's first full-length play in production. His short plays The Odd Ball and Homeland have been produced at festivals on both coasts. As a screenwriter, his first television pilot script is a semi-finalist in the 2014 L.A. Comedy Shorts Film Festival script competition (A Top Ten International Comedy Festival). He has had over fifty original comedy shorts produced by Daily Fiber Films, LLC. His comedies have been featured on FunnyOrDie.com, CNN, New Media Rockstars, and The Food Network. He holds an MFA in Acting from Rutgers University and a BA in Philosophy from Sewanee: The University of the South. He’s a proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA. Keep up with his comedy performances and writing at www.raymondmcanally.com and www.dailyfiberfilms.com.

Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are a final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

Tax C red IT s

If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution. No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.
