When I first read Grounded, what struck me first, besides the beautifully constructed prose poem of a script, was the fact that it is a war story told by a woman—a fighter pilot no less.
But more than that, it is a story about drones—the killing machines, we read about so often now, that can assassinate targets half a world away with the pressing of a button. And more than that, it deals with the duality of modern life—the schism between our virtual selves and our real lives—as the author George Brant describes it: "about being there and not being there."
One of the most moving passages in the play for me describes the Pilot, our heroine, returning home after a twelve-hour shift of staring at a screen and killing "men of military age" who are enemy targets. Imagine the disconnect.
"The door opens and the happy Family greets their hero home from the war
It would be a different book
The Odyssey
If Odysseus came home every day
Every single day
A very different book."
I feel that Lynn Meyers and the Ensemble Theatre with this play, along with last season's An Iliad, have shared with their audience two very different yet companionable views into mankind and the destruction war wages on the soul of (wo)man.
-Michael Evan Haney, Director
