"adorableness alert! goofy, good fun." – Cincinnati Enquirer

DEC 2 –
N 3

Buyer & Cellar is a fantasy based on some genuine explorations we have in our own lives. Who has not had moments when their sense of self-worth, their understanding of success, or their definition of fame has not been tested? We reevaluate ourselves as our lives progress. I know I do. There are pivotal people we meet whose definition of us helps define us, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. It's when we come to realize who we are and how we truly fit into this world that we begin to thrive.
Alex, the main character you will meet in this play, is on such a journey towards self awareness. Jonathan Tolins has written this parable using the amazing Barbra Streisand as Alex's pivotal person who points him towards his destiny. If you are going to have a pivotal person, why not Streisand? It's delicious how he weaves her personna into the other characters you meet. He has created a situation which I find oddly real and utterly delightful.
And then there is Nick Cearley, who I have known for most of his life! Cincinnati was his home, the world is now his stage. When he first saw Buyer & Cellar, that very day he called me about doing it here and that very day I applied for the rights. I believe that was over two years ago! Sometimes it takes a long time to get a new play to our stage, but this play with this actor was worth the wait. Nick has appeared in The Great American Trailer Park Musical, 25 The Musical, and both productions of Next to Normal. He is a joy, an endless source of energy and inspiration and I am so happy to have him "home."
In putting our 30th anniversary season together there were no coincidences. We started with the dramatic and essential Luna Gale, which defined our mission on stage. A wonderful cast of locally based actors presenting a compelling and timely play which spoke directly to our social conscience. We follow Luna with Buyer & Cellar to lift your spirits and allow you as an audience to enjoy this irreverent, unique, and funny play. It's time as the leaves change to change directions and elevate ourselves by celebrating a bit. We can celebrate our own passages to becoming who we are as we celebrate ETC's anniversary and its coming of age. Just like Alex is at the end of this play, we are all ready for the next challenge and a little smarter than we were just yesterday. Thanks for being part of our ensemble and enjoy your stay in the most famous basement in the USA.
Looking forward to seeing you soon for Cinderella. If you think you know the story, prepare to be surprised!
-D. Lynn Meyers, Director

John Morris Russell conductor
Vocal diva Megan Hilty (Wicked, Smash) brought audiences to their feet at her most recent Pops performance—named Broadway World’s “Best Special Theatre Event” in 2014. Now, Hilty returns with a touching tribute to Cincinnati’s own sweetheart of song, Rosemary Clooney.
