DIRECTOR’S NOTES

When Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a.k.a. Lewis Carroll, wrote Alice in Wonderland nearly 150 years ago, I wonder if he imagined that his creation would continue to captivate imaginations for generations of readers. He liked like to tell stories and lift the day-to-day world from the mundane to the amazing. Perhaps it’s his ingenious invention of characters which are bigger than life, yet completely recognizable, that allows his stories to go through time untainted by years. He was not afraid to think big and bold and bring to life a world that otherwise would have been held captive in his mind’s eye.

Blissfully, he shared his vision; the adaptation you see before you is a clear testament to this unique vision. David Kisor and Joe McDonough took the source material and wove a musical tale that is relevant to our audiences. Many of you will not have the joy of seeing this show with 191 small children. It is indeed a joy. The majority of children who participate in our Fairy Godmother Program each year will have their first theatre experience here at ETC with this show. They have no censors, no code of behavior in place. When it is good, they let you know and when it’s bad they are equally as telling in their response. This opportunity to share new scripts and music with purely unbiased audiences helps us create shows that will endure as well as the tales upon which they are based. Our audiences, tall and small, are the reason we do this work, the reason we tell our stories.

As a theatre dedicated to bringing to our stage the contemporary issues we face, we also have a responsibility to sometimes simply entertain and engage in delightful journeys. Such is the Alice in Wonderland before you. Yes, it has a parable wrapped inside a confection that tells us “home” is not such a bad place and “rules” can be for our own good. But hopefully it will also be a fun time. We pride ourselves on sharing shows at the holidays that will serve a non-denominational, multi-generational audience. We want to be a respite from the storm of holiday shopping and the hustle of holiday happenings. Hopefully your stay in Wonderland will be a delightful part of this holiday season, capturing the enchantment of a tale that came to be when the world was still light by candles.

Thank you for being here. I hope you will plan to be with us as we kick off 2013 with the captivating Freud's Last Session. In the meantime I wish you the happiest of holidays and the most wonderful of New Years!

Even with sold-out houses, ticket sales only make up ~34% of ETC’s annual budget. So, we rely on donor support to help bridge the gap between our affordable ticket prices and the cost it takes to produce exceptional theatre with high professional and artistic quality. Your contributions help support all of our programs and professional artists, while also making a significant impact on Over-the-Rhine by allowing us to remain a viable, economic engine for the neighborhood.

WAYS TO DONATE:

Give in the form of appreciated stock. Contact our Development Dept. for instructions. 6. Name ETC in your will or estate bequest.
