Cherokee Recreation and Parks is a national accredited agency through NRPA; National Recreation and Park Association. A few things that set our agency apart and to receive this national accreditation:
• Implementing a new Standard Operations Procedures Manual that encompasses over 50 new or revised policies and procedures.
• Developing a Park Maintenance Manual to standardize maintenance processes and schedules across all 23 parks and facilities.
• Adopting a new strategic plan to guide program and facility development.
• Adopting a Recycle Plan to improve recycling efforts and reduce waste across all facilities.
• Providing extensive staff training in critical areas such as de-escalation tactics, program development and evaluation, social media utilization, and risk reduction in programs and facilities.
Our agency successfully met 149 out of 154 standards, securing its place as one of 213 accredited agencies in the United States. This achievement demonstrates Cherokee Recreation and Parks ongoing commitment to excellence for their community and sets a strong foundation for its 2026 re-accreditation.
Vision
To seek a future where the full power of parks and recreation is widely recognized for creating a better life for everyone by building strong, healthy, and resilient communities. We advance this vision by investing in and championing the profession as a catalyst of positive change for equity, climate readiness, and overall well-being.
Currently, 11 of the full-time employees at Cherokee Recreation and Parks are Certified Parks and Recreation Professionals (CPRP). A CPRP certification is the national standard for all parks and recreation professionals who want to be at the forefront of their profession. Attaining the CPRP designation shows that you have met education and experience qualifications, illustrates your commitment to the profession, and demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of key concepts within parks and recreation. We are proud to have so many employees that want to continue their education in to make Cherokee Recreation & Parks the best that it can be.
Today’s youth sports climate overflows with programming choices, making it challenging for organizations to stand out among the crowd, and difficult for parents to gauge which ones can deliver high-quality experiences for young athletes. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation recognizes those organizations that have met an equally high standard when it comes to administering youth sports programming. Earning the designation means that you have taken the steps to ensure a safe, quality playing environment for children. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation has been developed around the National Standards for Youth Sports as a way to recognize and promote youth sports organizations that make quality a priority. If an organization meets the benchmark requirements of the designation, parents can be assured that specific safety and quality measures have been implemented.

Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area is located two miles south of Ball Ground, GA, and adjacent to the McGraw-Ford Wildlife Management Area. The property rests northwest of the confluence of Long Swamp Creek and the Etowah River. The property is accessed by GA Highway 372. The development of this project will provide critical protection and conservation of sensitive land that borders two bodies of water, support wildlife management in the area, and offer outdoor recreation opportunities for Cherokee County residents and visitors. The land is rich in Native American history and culture, especially that of the Cherokee Nation. Specifically, it is believed that the Battle of Taliwa occurred on this land and on adjacent properties. The battle, thought
to be fought in 1755, was part of a larger campaign of the Cherokee against the Muscogee Creek people. After their victory, the Cherokee pushed the Muscogee people south from their northern Georgia homelands and began settling in the region.
In addition to its regional significance, the property offers numerous natural resource recreation opportunities, including, but not limited to, canoeing/kayaking, camping, fishing, nature/walking trails, wildlife viewing, and archery. As a result, preserving this outdoor recreation area, which includes amenities that highlight its historical and cultural significance, is of the utmost importance to our community.

Students will gain valuable social skills and develop the confidence to perform in front of their peers.
