Fast fashion: What can we do?

Fast fashion, however, causes problems for the environment. Clothes factories use a lot of water, often in countries where people don’t have enough clean water to drink. They send polluted water back into the environment, too. This makes the rivers and oceans dangerous for plants and animals to live in.

ge

id

br

m

Ca

We use the term fast fashion to talk about the latest fashion at low prices. People buy these clothes often because they don’t cost very much. Sometimes they only wear things one or two times before throwing them away.

U

Fast fashion also uses a lot of plastic – plastic bags in factories and stores, and even plastic in many clothes! When we throw these clothes away, they stay in the ground for a very long time. They also leave very small pieces of plastic called microplastics in the water when we wash them.

As d an s le es sa Pr r y fo it t rs no ve y ni p

Co

Here are some ways you can help:

• Find out what clothes are made from before you buy them. Look for words like acrylic, nylon, or polyester – these are types of plastic. • Recycle clothes you don’t wear anymore instead of throwing them away.

• Make fun and useful items from old clothes. For example, use a pair of jeans to make a small bag. • Share clothes with your family or friends.

• When you have a party, rent your dress or suit. This is a fun way to wear a new look without hurting the environment.

• Shop at secondhand stores. You can find great prices!

Democratic schools

My pen pal Emily goes to a democratic school. In these schools, students can make a LOT of choices about what happens. For example, 1Emily and her classmates choose what time classes start, the classes they take, if they have homework, if they take tests, or if they wear a uniform. When she doesn’t like a topic she’s learning in class, she can talk about it with the teacher and decide what she wants to learn instead. For example, Emily loves IT, but she doesn’t enjoy English topics. So her teacher said she can write about robotics for her English essay! When Emily is tired, she can decide to stay home and not go to school for weeks! The school supports her decision. 2She doesn’t have to go until she is ready. Wow!

ss se

I’m not sure that I want to make so many big decisions. ³Some important subjects are boring or difficult, but we need to study them to do well. We can’t only do fun things. Sometimes we need other people to tell us what to do! However, I think 4it’s nice to make some choices. In my school, we can decide which clubs we want to join. I always choose music and dance. I want to be a professional dancer when I grow up.

MAKING HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES Different types of food help our bodies in different ways. Some can also be bad for us. So, which foods are important for a healthy body?

Ca

Eat a lot of ...

m

We need to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. They have lots of vitamins, which help our bodies work. For example, vitamin C in foods like oranges, peppers, and broccoli keeps our skin healthy. Carrots and leafy green vegetables (like spinach) help us make vitamin A, which is good for our eyes.

id

br

Foods like bread, rice, and pasta give us energy to move, so we need plenty of these, too. Whole wheat bread, rice, and pasta are better than white because they have more vitamins and minerals.

Eat a little ...

ge

Eat some ...

Many of the foods that we enjoy are not healthy. Chips and french fries have a lot of fat and salt. Cake, cookies, soda, and candy are full of sugar. These can give us problems with our heart, our teeth, and our blood.

Foods like milk, butter, cheese, and yogurt help our teeth and bones to stay strong. But they also have a lot of fat, so we shouldn’t eat too much of these. Some yogurts and milk drinks can also have a lot of sugar.

Think about what you eat every day. Do you eat all of the food types that you need?

U

Meat, fish, beans, and nuts all help us grow tall and strong. They also have vitamins and minerals that help keep our blood healthy. Some meats, like hamburgers and sausages, have a lot of fat and salt. This can be bad for your heart.

You can rent this vacation home for a week or a weekend. It’s comfortable and not very expensive. There is a dining area outside, and the bedroom has a balcony where you can sit and enjoy the view of the beautiful swimming pool. When it’s hot, jump in the pool and go for a swim.

It has lots of sofas and chairs. It is the perfect place to relax. However, this place is very, very expensive. It’s much more expensive than the Outdoors House, so we don’t usually stay here. House in the Trees

This is my favorite place! It’s a treehouse in the middle of a forest. There isn’t a lot of furniture, only a bed and a table, and there’s no kitchen. When we stay here, we eat breakfast and dinner with other families in another building. It’s fun to make new friends. The House in the Trees is smaller than the Island House, but it’s even more beautiful. You can listen to the birds here. Even in the rain, it’s fantastic!

Yes, for health reasons. Some people spend many hours on their phones. Sometimes they don’t sleep well or they can’t pay attention in class. I think people should do more activities in real life, like hanging out with friends and playing sports.

You’re right. People shouldn’t use devices like phones or tablets before bed. The light from the screens is bad for falling asleep.

Some adults say that young people shouldn’t have smartphones. I don’t think phones are bad for us. I can use my phone to chat with friends, make funny videos, and share photos with my family. Also, phones are very useful. I often go online to find information or use a dictionary app to help me with my English homework. I sometimes use my phone to call my parents when I need them to drive me somewhere. However, I think it’s true that we sometimes use phones too much. For example, we shouldn’t look at them when we are having dinner with our family or before we go to sleep. In conclusion, phones are a useful and fun part of our lives. We just need to know when it’s time to turn them off.

: to look for the differences between two or more things

When we post a photo or a video online, it is usually because we want to show the world that we’re having a good time. Nobody wants to share the boring moments or the times when they’re unhappy. But that doesn’t mean that those times don’t happen. It’s easy to forget this when you see somebody on social media laughing with all their friends or having an amazing time on hoilday. It can make you feel like other people have more interesting and exciting lives than you.

m

We might think that being so connected to other people makes us happier. However, experts worry that spending too much time on social media can actually be bad for our mental health.

ss se

86

Social media is a big part of modern life. With a smartphone in our hands, we can share our ideas, our activities, and our happiest moments with the whole world in seconds. We’re never more than a few clicks away from knowing what others are doing or what they think of our latest selfies.

It’s also easy to control how we look online, using makeup and filters to change our faces and bodies. People often feel unhappy when they compare how they look with photos on social media – but remember that the photos are not always real! So next time you find yourself thinking that other people are having more fun or worrying about how you look, try taking a break from social media. You might just need to remember that life isn’t always how it looks online.

Places change all the time, but some places change more than others. Singapore and Venice are two very interesting places in the world, but they are also very different.

ge

br

In 1824, there were10,683 people in Singapore. The houses were only two or three floors high, and there weren’t many shops. There were markets instead. Today, Singapore is big and modern. Most of the 5,600,000 Singaporeans live in apartments in very tall buildings. Some buildings have 60 floors! People can buy things from lots of other countries at the shopping malls. There is a subway and a park with 18 “supertrees.” The trees are 50 meters tall and have beautiful lights at night. But Singapore also has places from the past. You can walk down the old streets and see buildings from a long time ago. Singapore is a great place to visit and an exciting place to live.

U

As d an s le es sa Pr r y fo it t rs no ve y ni p

Today, the city of Venice looks the same as 600 years ago. Paintings of Venice in an art museum look like postcards of the city today! In old paintings, you can see wooden boats on the canals between the buildings, and you can still see them today. In 1500, there were 100,000 Venetians in Venice. The population of the city is now 55,000. There aren’t many jobs or places to study in Venice, so young people have to move to other cities. But 13 million people visit Venice every year. Venice is beautiful to see, but it is a very crowded place to live.

Long ago, three little rabbits lived with their mother in a forest in China. One day, Mama Rabbit left them alone to get carrots. She told them not to open the door until she got back. After a while, a wolf knocked on the door. He wanted to eat the little rabbits! He talked and sang like Mama Rabbit. The little rabbits looked through the window and saw the wolf. B The king with horse’s ears

A long time ago, a king was born in Ireland with horse’s ears. He didn’t want anyone to know his secret, so he wore a special crown to cover his large ears. Once a year he ordered a different man to cut his hair, and these men always disappeared. People were afraid, and nobody wanted to cut his hair. One year, the man who cut the king’s hair asked him to let him go. The man promised not to say a word about the secret. The king trusted him and let him go. Many years later, the king was tired of keeping his secret. He stood up and took off his crown in front of everyone. People were surprised, but they didn’t laugh at the king. Instead, they started to clap.
