Simply Christmas Shall Celebrate True Meaning of Season

Simplify means getting back to basics or returning to one’s roots or removing unnecessary hindrances. There are very few events more basic than the birth of a Savior.

Wreaths, Christmas Décor, and Arrangements

“As a church family, we want to share the love of Christ with our neighbors,” said Patti Bergman, the coordinator of Lititz United Methodist Church’s Simply Christmas. “It’s an opportunity to slow down and experience the greatest reason for the season, which is Jesus. It’s also a chance for us to spend time with our neighbors, which is also a great gift.”

Located at 201 E. Market St., Lititz, Lititz United Methodist Church will host this year’s edition of its annual Simply Christmas

event on Sunday, Dec. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. The celebration, which will feature music, gifts, games and food, is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

“It’s a very simple event,” said Bergman. “There’s a lot of joy and laughter. Eyes are bright. There’s an interaction that’s going on. It’s just

something overwhelming inside. The atmosphere is a very unique experience, and some people have made it a tradition. It’s a chance for the church family to know others as well. You make new friends.”

Visitors to the event will encounter modest decorations as they are greeted at a welcoming table inside

Looking to try a new hobby in 2026 and help the planet at the same time? Sign up for the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society’s New Beekeeper Workshop. The workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Doors will open at 7:15 a.m.

“Beekeeping is a deeply rewarding hobby that has a meaningful impact on the environment,” said Kim Fairfield, secretary/ communications director for the society. “For some, this can be a lucrative enterprise, but for most hobbyist beekeepers, the reward is in the calming, hands-on care for the bees that improves pollination in our communities, encourages stewardship of nature and promotes individual mindfulness. Of course, there’s also the sweet, golden reward of harvesting your own honey and beeswax!”

Christmas spirit may indeed originate from within, but it can be positively affected by out side stimuli. One particularly festive outside stimulus is music.

“Music began in the church,” said Debbie Kline-Smith, the director of the Lititz Area Community Choir. “It has always been a part of worship and entertainment. Music allows people living in a current situation to go to a different place. It might make them think of things from the past. I think that’s one of the reasons people come. Musicians have been part of celebrations forever. People find great joy in

During the workshop, participants will receive all the essential information they need to begin beekeeping.

“We will cover topics that include the biology of bees, how to source your bees, how to set up and position your hives, caring for your bees, beekeeping equipment and costs, pest control, honey extraction and more,” Fairfield shared. “Attendees have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with seasoned beekeepers, win door prizes and enter (giveaways) to win hives and other equipment.”

The workshop fee will include lunch and all materials

music. It’s a way to remember and reminisce.”

The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends’ upcoming performance is designed to put everyone involved in a specific frame of mind for Christmas.

This year’s seasonal concert by the local choir, titled “The Majesty Glory of Christmas,” will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, inside Warwick High School’s 1,400-seat Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz.

The concert is free to attend, and a goodwill offering will be accepted.

“It’s kind of like an awe-inspiring Christmas,” said Kline-Smith. “The glory of Christmas is always tied

to a lot of power, which is accompanied by the birth of Baby Jesus. The glory is like the restoration of humanity. It signifies hope for the future, and not just the biblical part of it. It’s like the rebirth of a new year.”

The hourlong musical presentation will include 10 well-known holiday selections, including “O Holy Night,” “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” The concert will feature soloists Holly Colvin, Allison Fund-Drogemueller, Toni Guhl, Matthew Hehnly, Ethan Reimel and Lillyan Steiberg.

The performance will not include an intermission.

“The audience can expect hearing recognizable tunes,” said

Kline-Smith, a retired, longtime music educator in the Warwick School District. “They’ll hear some very fine singing. We work hard to get to what we consider choral excellence. There will be a few props and backgrounds that will make it more of a performance or an experience. It’s going through all parts of the holiday season. It’s all tied together. When (audience members) leave on the 21st, they’ll really feel like Christmas is coming.”

The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends is made up of about 90 talented singers of all ages, ranges and backgrounds, mainly graduates of the Warwick School District’s musical program, but also those who have previously been involved with programs of surrounding school districts. The choir will be accompanied by an 18-piece orchestra.

“These people love to perform,” said Kline-Smith. “They love music, and they love singing in a group setting. For many of them, it’s an opportunity to continue their singing. They’re performers who use their voices. It’s just an outlet for people to have as a hobby.”

“They’re very hard workers,” continued Kline-Smith. “They’re very dedicated. They seem to enjoy it. I pick music that I hope they enjoy singing and that the audience will

enjoy hearing. The arrangement of this music is absolutely beautiful.”

Preparations for “The Majesty Glory of Christmas” began in June, and the choir began rehearsing as a group in September. Two-hour rehearsals were conducted every Thursday night at Brunnerville United Methodist Church.

“It’s typical that choirs perform a holiday concert,” said Kline-Smith. “We would be performing every weekend in December; there’s that much demand. This is truly a choral setting where we sing in a four- or eight-part harmonies. We are providing something that moves the audience aesthetically. I think we as people need more of that in life. This is a real positive thing, and it’s traditional.”

The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends was formed in August of 2022. The Dec. 21 performance will be the seventh public concert presented by the group.

“I hope people will have a desire to come and see what it’s all about,” said Kline-Smith. “For people who have seen us before, I hope they come to continue the journey with the choir.”

and take-home handouts, as well as membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society (LCBS) for 2026.

“This membership gives access to our monthly meetings featuring professional speakers, a members-only monthly newsletter and swag store and monthly hive checks where we gather to examine the LCBS hives and ask questions from our experienced hosts,” Fairfield explained. “Members can also use the club’s 15-frame radial extractor at no fee, sign up to be on our swarm collectors list and have access to a certified kitchen to bottle salable honey for a nominal fee.”

The New Beekeeper Workshop has been a popular public offering of the society for many years, Fairfield said, noting that early registration is recommended since space is limited and the workshop typically sells out.

Lancaster County Beekeepers Society is a member organization, but the group also focuses on public awareness and services.

“One of the key ways we do this is by providing education for aspiring beekeepers in order to promote and endorse safe, responsible and ethical beekeeping practices that protect

the community and the environment,” Fairfield said.

The upcoming year is an important one for the club.

“This year we are particularly excited to be celebrating our 150th anniversary, making us the oldest known beekeeping club in the United States,” she commented. “We have some special celebrations planned for 2026, so it’s a great year to be a part of the organization.”

Community members can also support the efforts of the group by contacting the club to safely remove a swarm of bees or by sponsoring the society’s upcoming celebrations.

“If you aren’t quite ready to start your own hive, please consider joining LCBS,” Fairfield said. “You don’t have to be a beekeeper to be a member, and this is a great way to learn a lot about honey bees and beekeeping and gain hands-on experience with the club hives. You can also follow us on Facebook at ‘Lancaster County Beekeepers Society’ and Instagram at @LancasterBeekeepers for fun, educational content and to learn about our activities.”

the church’s entrance. The highlight of Simply Christmas is a living Nativity scene, but there are also meditation opportunities in Lititz

United Methodist Church’s prayer room; holiday-themed, “Jeopardy”-style trivia; and music.

“It’s nothing regimented; it’s throughout the evening and you can enjoy whatever part you want,” said Bergman, a resident of Lititz. “It’s about the spirit of Christ and the spirt of goodwill. Everything is completely free. You wouldn’t charge your neighbor if you invited them over.”

The food court set up in the church’s social hall will serve chicken corn noodle soup, vegetable soup, hot dogs and hot chocolate. For the kids, there will be crafts, age-appropriate games, story times, face painting and a sharing room where children can shop for gifts at no cost.

There will also be the singing of Christmas carols, including an inspirational rendition of “Silent Night.”

of whom are associated with Lititz United Methodist Church, will be on hand to assist with the event.

“There are many hands,” said Bergman. “It’s a team effort, and it’s a wonderful team. Like many churches, we have special (holiday) services throughout the month (December). I like it because it brings members of the church together. There’s a feeling of kindness and friendliness.”

“There are so many families out there in our community who have never been here and who would benefit from the warmth of the experience,” Bergman added. “Their kids can have a really good time. But it’s also geared toward older folks who don’t have their kids around. If people want something basic to do, it’s a great way to celebrate Christ’s birth. Hopefully, they can walk away feeling a little bit better.”

“For me, Christmas is all about my Savior and all the blessings he’s given me throughout the year,” said Bergman. “When you think about the Savior, he was born in a humble manger. It was simple.”

Lititz United Methodist Church began its Simply Christmas event in 2012 as a way to recapture the simple wonder of Christmas. The church also operates a year-round, open door clothing bank, sponsors a community Easter egg hunt in the spring and conducts a harvest festival in the fall.

To register for the workshop, visit www.lancasterbeekeepers .org/workshop. Email workshop@ lancasterbeekeepers.org for more information.

As many as 500 individuals are expected to attend Simply Christmas. About 85 volunteers, many

Lititz United Methodist also sponsors various youth programs that encourage community interaction.

“I think our church is well known in the community,” said Bergman. “From our standpoint, we know how important the community is. We care very much for our community. When there’s a need, we’re there to reach out. To grow is to be aware of the needs of your community and supply when you can, and I think the church has done that throughout the years.”
