Upcoming events to bring local holiday spirit to life BY JEFF FALK

Christmas is a very historic holiday, a very historic time of the year. Lititz is a very historic town, a very historic place. The Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) is hosting a pair of upcoming events over three days that will honor the Christmas season and celebrate the holiday’s history and tradition. “ We want to show visitors what Christmas was like in Lititz 200 Visitors to last year’s Christmas Carol years ago,” said Cory Sing collaborate on a holiday tune. nowledge is power and empowering. Knowledge leads to understanding, and understanding lays the groundwork for empathy. With its upcoming event, House of His Creation (HOHC) seeks to impart knowledge about what it is and exactly what it does. “I think people are starting to know who we are,” said Michelle Gibbs , who ’s been HOHC ’s executive director since August,

“House of His Creation is not a shelter; it’s a family living environment.” replacing Matt Neff. “We’ve been in existence for 51 years, but because we’re in a new location (for three years), I don’t think people know we’re here. We’re a home, a place that provides for women and children. We want to create some awareness of House of His Creation and bring people to the home.” A safe space that provides services and support for pregnant women and mothers with newborns, HOHC will host its inaugural Festive Christmas House Tour and Charity Donation Drive at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 6 to 8 p.m. on both Thursday, Dec. 12, and Friday, Dec. 13. Visitors will be afforded an opportunity to meet Gibbs, the organization’s house parents and

HOHC board members. The event is free to attend, and light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the tour. “We are going to have this house decorated inside and out and looking very festive,” said Gibbs. “This used to be a bed-andbreakfast before we purchased it, and it’s always nice during the holidays to see beautiful homes. I want people to be wowed by what’s going on here. I’m hoping

real connections come out of this and for people to know how we are helping women and children.” Organizers of HOHC’s Festive Christmas House Tour and Charity Donation Drive are hoping that a total of 100 members of the Lititz community and surrounding communities will attend the two-night event. “I love Christmas and the decorations,” Gibbs said. “I just think it’s the perfect time for an event

yslexia is something that we might not fully understand. Dyslexia may be something we don’t talk enough about. Dyslexia might be more prevalent than we realize. It’s a learning disorder that Children’s Dyslexia Center (CDC) of Lancaster can help manage and, in some instances, even overcome. “ W hat ever yone needs to

understand is that (dyslexia is) neurological, it runs in families and it affects language processing,” said Heather Brown, who’s been CDC of Lancaster’s director for 10 years. “What it’s not is reading backwards. It’s about how kids process language, how the brain processes language. Words and sentences look the same, but it’s daunting to read. Students work so hard to get through paragraphs that by the end of them they don’t remember See Dyslexia pg 4
