he Lititz Woman’s Club is both a service club and a social club. Relationships and friendships evolve as members of the club pool their talents to help others in the community. “I think women are always subconsciously worrying about doing the right thing and not trying to offend people,” said Amy Hamilton, a current and past president of the Lititz Woman’s Club. “We really nurture that in the club, and we make everyone feel welcome. I think for years women have always wanted to pursue our strength. The more we can do, the more we want to do.” A diverse organization, the Lititz Woman’s Club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at Listrak, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. “It’s a good way to get involved,” said Hamilton. “The best part for me is just the camaraderie. You make great friends of women of all ages. It’s so rewarding all the things we do. We try to chip in wherever we’re needed. The bottom line is we have a great time doing it. We’re all volunteering, so it has to be fun. It’s such a feel-good club.” By hosting and sponsoring fundraisers throughout the year, the Lititz Woman’s Club supports community organizations like GateHouse drug Members of the Lititz Woman’s Club plant flowers at the rehabilitation, Now I Can Foundation Northeast, See Woman’s Club pg 3

Bob Derr’s Impact Lives on Through Scholarship

Celebrate the season while supporting MCC!

BY JEFF FALK

Bob Derr lived a full, meaningful life filled with service to others. His family has come up with a way to continue Derr’s committed work posthumously. For Coach Derr, a memorial scholarship fund is one of the sincerest forms of flattery. “I think my dad was a unique individual,” said Bree Arvia. “I think the number of lives my

dad impacted was significant, and he did it in a very humble way. It was never about him. When you have an individual with such high qualities, it can be inspiring.” With the help of family and friends, Arvia is spearheading the Robert “Bob” Derr Memorial Scholarship Fund. It’s been almost a year now since, Derr, Shellenberger (left) and her former a native and resident of Lititz, Jess coach, Bob Derr, were members of the passed away after serving the Warwick School District’s initial Sports Hall See Bob Derr pg 2 of Fame class.

College Night Can Be Portal to Brighter Futures BY JEFF FALK

It seems a lot to ask 17- and 18-year-olds to make highereducation decisions that will affect the rest of their lives, that will shape the directions of their existences. But College Night can help by providing options, clearing up misconceptions and sparking new possibilities. An informed decision is a smart decision. “It helps kids from all over Lancaster County and beyond to be able to have direct interaction with colleges, trade schools and the military,” said Barbara McDaniel, a counseling office administrative assistant at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) who’s been coordinating College Night for 27 years. “It gives them a little bit of the atmosphere of what college is like. It helps students decide which path is best for them.” Located at 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, CVHS will host this year’s edition of its annual College Night inside Rill Gymnasium from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3. The event is free to attend and open to all high school students across Lancaster County. “ I t ’s s o a w e s o m e ,” s a i d McDaniel. “Tables are set up in alphabetical order, and there are a lot of people. When I talk to parents and students, I get compliments about the flow. Students can see what a college represents or if they have the major they are interested in. It’s a busy night, but when six o’clock hits and I open the doors and see the students come in, that’s my favorite part.” See College Night pg 4
