UZRC Car Show Scheduled Live And Virtual Events Planned ment Community (UZRC) Car and Motorcycle Cruise is an important fundraiser for the organization. For 13 years, the gathering of four- and two-wheeled vehicles has helped to raise money to support the Benevolent Care program at UZRC. “(The show) helps support so many that can no longer afford the full cost of their care,” said Megan Weiss, director of marketing and development with UZRC. “On average, United Zion’s benevolent care supports over 40 people a day. Community support is key to being able to provide affordable quality care for seniors in our community.” The 2020 cruise will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. This year, the cars will line up at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz. The event will include vehicles, food trucks, and spectators. The show is open to all vehicles, and the public is
welcome to attend at no cost. Since the show is capped at 100 vehicles, owners of cars and motorcycles may also compete virtually by submitting their entry online at www.uzrc.org and sending photos or videos to marketing@uzrc.org.

A $20 suggested donation applies for both in-person and virtual entries, and entrants in both categories will compete for prizes. Judges will be Mayor Tim Snyder, former commissioner Dennis Stuckey, and local author and historian Cory Van Brookhoven. Weiss said that UZRC has taken
special precautions to hold the event in keeping with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. “By capping the at-show entries at 100, we will be able to provide additional spacing between cars as well as keep the event under the governor’s guidelines of 250 people for an outdoor event,” said Weiss, who added that the show will also be broadcast on Facebook Live via the UZRC page. Other precautions include show vehicles only being allowed to bring one passenger and all attendees wearing masks that cover both the nose and mouth and that are closed under the chin. Open bandanas will not be allowed. Masks must be worn except when their wearers are eating. The show will be organized so that vehicle rows face one direction to reduce clustering of those viewing cars. Hand sanitizer stations will be available. Organizers request that those in attendance be free of any COVID-19 symptoms. See UZRC pg 3

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. The annual United Zion Retire-
On her website, Shelleen Weaver describes herself as an author, speaker, singer, songwriter, wife, mother, friend, and daughter. She is also a New Holland resident and one who loves the Word of God. On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., Weaver will launch the first installment of her children’s series “Fruit Fables,” published by her own Haste Laud Press, the company she founded to help her share the stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to
return kind words back to them. “ W hen you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation will partner with the Lititz Garden Club to hold its annual plant exchange on Sunday, Oct. 4. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Mary Oehme Gardens located behind the foundation’s museum building at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. Plants brought for exchange must be perennials. Each plant must be placed in a container for easy transportation and marked with an identification tag. Plant owners will receive a ticket for each plant upon arrival, and plants will be categorized into sun, shade, exotic,
bulbs, herbs, and ground cover. Tickets may be redeemed for another plant after all plants are placed in the categories and attendees have had sufficient time to explore the categories. Attendees are asked to wear masks during the event and to practice social distancing from others. Free parking will be available along Main Street. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.” To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him not seeing anything he had done since middle school.” Cody Wood is known as an animation artist, and he has been featured on Cartoon Network, but he switched hats for his first book illustration, winning Weaver’s praise. Weaver plans to feature herself and Wood on her website, where they will read the book together, talk about the questions, and even sing the song. “Isn’t that fun?” Weaver asked. “People can meet the author and the illustrator on the site.” Weaver agreed that the appeal of the book is broader than the Christian market and that the lesson of kindness is especially timely. “We learn through stories,” she said. “We are opened to truth through stories.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www.shelleenweaver.com.

Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for

Organizers have lined up food trucks and entertainment for those who attend the live event. Bricker’s Famous French Fries and Lickity Split will be on hand, and musical entertainment will be provided by disc jockey Kenny Rose. Weiss noted that organizers are excited to be able to hold the event for several reasons. “Community support is key to being able to provide affordable quality care for seniors in our community,” she said, adding that area residents are also looking forward to the annual show. “I’ve received so many calls from folks that are so excited to be able to show their cars as so many events had to be canceled this summer,” said Weiss. “It will be a way for the community to pull together again.” In the case of inclement weather, the show will become an entirely virtual event, and those who had planned to show their cars will be given time to submit their entries. In addition, because of the possibility of other last-minute changes, readers are asked to check the UZRC website or to search for “United Zion Retirement Community” on Facebook for announcements.

Throughout the month of September, residents of MMC are showing their support of the Lititz Borough Police Department by using blue light bulbs on their porches. site. “ We make breakfast burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.”
Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure camping is for them, Shady Maple RV offers rentals, starting with pop-up campers and ranging to motorhomes. “Demand for rentals went up (this year),” said rental specialist Lynnette Morris. “The majority of rentals were out every weekend this year,” she noted, adding that some days she has turned away more than 20 people.

Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the camp-

of those sales involved firsttime buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially

Rosa Receives Caregiver Award Wilamenia Rosa, a household facilitator and certified nursing assistant at Landis Homes, received the Distinguished Service Award as Direct Caregiver of the Year by LeadingAge PA. Rosa was selected from a group of exceptional employees from across the state who were nominated by their organizations. The conference is normally held in June in Hershey, with thousands of attendees from across the state. Because of current restrictions due to COVID-19, this year’s conference was held virtually from Aug. 18 to 21, with attendees logging on from their locations. Landis Homes hosted a small gathering to recognize Rose at the time of the virtual presentation, which was recorded to be shared with coworkers, friends and residents at a later time. According to LeadingAge PA, the award recognizes caregivers who serve as models of commitment to compassionate care. LeadingAge PA is a trade association representing Pennsylvania’s nonprofit organizations that provide housing, health care and community services primarily to seniors. Since 1963, the association has acted as the primary source for advocacy, networking and education for nonprofit providers of services for older adults.
