Lancaster Capital Day’s goal is to highlight and nurture that culture-infused ambiance. “It’s a grassroots, communityled initiative,” said Tim Austin, one of the organizers of Lancaster Capital Day. “It’s a celebration of Lancaster. By investing in Lancaster culture, we have a chance to look at ourselves and celebrate what we love about the community. It’s a cultural festival, but the culture is ours. It’s an opportunity for the city to put on a show. The initial response has been really positive.” The inaugural Lancaster Capital Day will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, a date that is historically close to Sept. 27, 1777, when Lancaster famously served as the United States’ capital for a single day. Lancaster Capital Day will be conducted in the closed streets and surrounding blocks of 1 Penn Square in the city, at the precise location where the Continental Congress convened an official session inside the Lancaster County Courthouse. Lancaster Capital Day is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Chances are, we all know or have encountered someone with dementia. Whether it’s a family member or a random stranger in the grocery store, knowing how to interact with someone with dementia and learning more about the disease can benefit everyone. Donna Wilkie, a certified dementia practitioner at Hospice & Community Care, will present “What Do I Need to Know About Dementia?” at Zion Lutheran Church, 2 Hazel St., Manheim, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The presentation will address different types of dementia, teach ways to effectively communicate with a person living with dementia and offer ideas for other “dementia friendly” actions. “The program will cover five key messages to understanding better what people living with dementia are going through,” Wilkie said. “We want people who come to the program to be able to react better when they come across people who have dementia.” One of the biggest messages Wilkie hopes people will take away from the program is that dementia is not a natural consequence of aging. “We’ll talk about what’s normal aging and what’s not normal aging,” she said. “Losing your keys or forgetting why you came into a room are signs of aging, not necessarily anything more.” She also hopes participants will begin to view dementia for what it is - brain failure - and help make that concept as mainstream in everyday conversations as kidney or liver failure. Wilkie understands firsthand what it’s like to care for a person with dementia. “My mom died from Lewy body dementia in 2016,” she said. “I came to work at Hospice in 2019. I got involved with their dementia resource team. It’s a passion for me. I wish I had the education that

I now have when I was trying to help my mom. It’s really important that people get that education to help their loved ones.” The presentation at Zion Lutheran is part of Dementia Friends, an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of people with dementia. “Zion is committed to join a growing movement to create ‘dementia-friendly’ communities,” said pastor Kate Warn. She noted that the program is part of a series of informational sessions for the Manheim community related to the idea of “aging with grace.” The program will be interactive, Wilkie said, with opportunities for questions from the audience and hands-on activities. And above all, it will present dementia as more than a devastating diagnosis, she said, adding, “We’re focused on trying to remember all the things a person with dementia can do, rather than the things they can’t do.” She wants participants to leave with a better understanding of people living with dementia. “You could have a family member with dementia, or you could just encounter a person living with dementia who you come across in the community,” she said. “We want everyone to be able to react in better ways when this happens and know what to do.” Advance registration for the program is not required but is helpful for planning purposes. TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PAsmart grant by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education. The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to ser ve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives stemming from these funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries. The nine partner schools will

implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommunications, broadband, and electrical companies. Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate among the TechLink schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.

Help the Fight Plans Fundraiser Help the Fight will host its 17th annual Main Event Benefit and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will take place at Spooky Nook Meetings & Events, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The organization’s signature fundraising event brings together local businesses, community members, breast cancer survivors, patients, families, and supporters for an event dedicated to making a difference in the lives of local individuals facing breast cancer, along with their families. Held at the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Main Event serves as Help the Fight’s largest annual fundraiser and plays an important role in sustaining the organization’s mission of ensuring that no one

in the community faces breast cancer alone. Guests may enjoy a buffet dinner, assorted desserts, and a cash bar featuring a specialty pink mocktail. The Main Event will also include stories of hope and resilience, a live auction, an online silent auction, giveaway drawings, and other opportunities to support Help the Fight’s mission. Since its founding in 2009, Help the Fight has raised more than $2 million to provide realtime financial assistance and support to local individuals with breast cancer, along with their families. out there and sharing their interests. When it comes to recreation, I think people think of sports programs. I don’t think they always think of art as being part of things. I think this is just another way to bring people together.” The next edition of MTRPP’s annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will be staged from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the township’s 70-acre park, 2369 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine event offers free admission and free parking at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, and dogs are welcome as well. “This event has been happening for many years,” said Bulla. “It’s a great way to get artists out and have an end-of-the-summer Saturday. It’s nice to take a moment to enjoy nature and some art. The

general theme of the art show is nature. All of the artists’ focus is tied to nature.” The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will feature the work of more than 25 artists, most of whom are from Lancaster County, and their creations in the mediums of painting, photography, clay sculptures, metal sculptures, line drawing, crafts and jewelry. Some of the artists’ work will be available for purchase, and prizes will be awarded in a handful of categories based on the impartial judging of an art expert. “It’s calm, but lively,” said Bulla, herself a trained artist. “It’s very welcoming, very relaxed. It’s people wandering around and admiring art. “Landis Woods is very quiet and very serene,” continued Bulla. “But it’s also beautiful; it’s a nature park.

It feels secluded, but you’re actually surrounded by the township.” The presence of live music throughout the day will certainly do nothing to detract from the event’s atmosphere. The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will feature the musical stylings of Stone Soup String Band from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; Jim Sorrentino Jazz Band from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m; Lancaster County Folk Music and Fiddle Society from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and the Steve Barth Band from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. There will also be food trucks and hot and cold refreshments available from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Come on out and make a day of it. “It gives people an opportunity to present their work,” said Bulla.

“We see an influx of people at 10 o’clock, then later in the afternoon we’ll see another influx. But there’s a constant flow of people coming and going. The artists invite their friends as well.” During the 27 years of its existence, the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show has endured its share of highs and lows, but it has remained a constant in the community. “I’d like to think that people know about it, just because it’s been around so long,” said Bulla. “We try to get the word out about it. It’s a long-standing event that has an opportunity to become more. I’m focused more on where it could go. In addition, SWAN Lancaster is funded through grants, monthly donations, sponsorships and partnerships. “There are incredible nonprofits throughout Lancaster County,” said Torres. “So, getting people to know what you do is huge. The work SWAN is doing is not temporary. We stick with these kids, and we build relationships with them.” SWAN Lancaster, which was

founded in 2011, serves children through private and group music lessons, mental health counseling and mentoring. “Our heart and goal is to be able to serve every school in Lancaster County,” said Torres. “We have had kids who have shared their stories, the why and how their lives have been changed.
