hether through the eyes or the mind’s imagination, the act of visualization possesses the power to create moving images, bold stimuli and lasting impressions. Few endeavors reflect the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI) as well as the Red Sand Project. “Red sand is used because it immediately attracts your attention,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of NSI for four years. “When you pour it on the sidewalk, it represents people who have fallen through the cracks. Filling the cracks symbolizes that we’re not willing to have people fall in the cracks. We will become a community where trafficking can end.” Recently, Clark, Ariana Sequino and Michelle Curiel, all members of the NSI team - a nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking and exploitation - took advantage of an opportunity to participate in the national Red Sand Project. Volunteering has given Jim Wenger a platform. Backed by actions, his humble message of hope, involvement and opportunity is meant to encourage others, promote thinking and affect change. “I think it’s important to be an example and hopefully inspire others to volunteer,” said Wenger. “If this can do that,
then I’m all in. There is so much to be done in our communities. The benefits of volunteering aren’t just the performing of a task; it’s connecting with people.” Wenger is a leader, a role model and a lifelong volunteer. Cylo is a character, with character. “Cylo’s role as the mascot is to bring the energy to each game day and create excitement about our team in the community,” said Madeline Davis, who is the Lancaster Stormers’ community and fan engagement coordinator, as well as one of Cylo’s handlers. “Typically, professional sports teams do have a mascot. Cylo is a very important staple to our organization and is well recognized in the community.” Cylo is the official mascot of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club, which plays its home games at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The friendly Cylo plays a huge role in the Stormers’ overall fan experience, as important off the field as the team and its players are on the field. “This season, we play 63 home games at Penn Medicine Park, and Cylo comes to all of them,” said Davis. “He is our biggest fan. He is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest. See Cylo pg 2

I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. Something a lot of people don’t know about him is that he is actually a distant cousin of the Phillie Phanatic.” Cylo has been part of the Lancaster professional baseball franchise since the organization’s inception 21 seasons ago. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities. “I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.”
A wealth of history can be found in Marietta, but much of it has been buried, forgotten or overlooked. Now a group of volunteers is working to bring that heritage into the spotlight. The Marietta African American Legacy Initiative (MAALI) Team invites the public to a dedication and commemoration ceremony to honor the heritage of Bethel AME Church and Wesley AME Zion Cemetery and the people who worshipped and are buried there. The ceremony will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. “We are going to be focusing on four themes,” said Michael Sweeney, who gathered the people who comprise the MAALI Team. “The program will cover the church burnings, the veterans who are buried in the cemeteries, the Colored School and the Colored Camp Meetings.” As Sweeney explained, on
April 19, 1861, both of the African American churches in Marietta were set on fire. Bethel AME burned completely to the ground, while Wesley AME Zion was damaged but later repaired. Just over a year later, Wesley AME Zion and the Colored School (also known as the African School) as well as a home on the property were destroyed by fire. He noted that about 35 Civil War, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans are buried in the cemeteries, including his father, but their history has been hidden. For years, the property containing the Wesley AME Zion cemetery was abandoned, falling into disrepair. In the early 1990s, two local women, Catherine Tucker and Thelma Mae Waters, received a grant to restore the space but couldn’t prove the property was officially abandoned. Not content to let this history disappear, Tina Charles worked diligently to find the proof, and she succeeded.

We want people to know about North Star, because people are encouraged when they know there are resources. I keep running into people who don’t know about North Star and what we do.” According to Clark, the number one tool in attracting potential victims to human trafficking is social media, and force is only used in about three percent of the total human trafficking cases. She also said that more than half of the victims of human trafficking were exploited by family members or trusted caregivers.

Jarena Lee, the first woman preacher in the AME Church and the first Black woman to publish an autobiography, preached at the site, Sweeney said. To build his MAALI Team, Sweeney recruited volunteers who c are a s deeply a bou t Marietta’s past as he does. The members said the project has opened their eyes to a history they didn’t know. John Jenkins worked for years at what is now GSK in Marietta. “I would walk to work, never realizing that part of the lot I walked by was the Black cemetery in disrepair,” he said. Lynn Jenkins said learning about the site was emotional.

Wenger served as the president of Venture Lititz’s board of directors from 2011 to 2023. “I volunteer to get to know people and make a difference in the community,” said Wenger. “If you get involved, you’re forced to interact. I think that’s what keeps our Lititz community grounded and a great place to live. There’s a large sense of satisfaction. Because of the work we put in with downtown Lititz, it’s definitely different. Now, we have a variety of businesses. It just has evolved into other things. People love to come and visit and check it out.” Wenger, a resident of Lititz and a managing partner of Derck & Edson, a local planning, engineering and design firm, is also an advocate for volunteering. He contends that there is a plethora of local volunteer opportunities out there and that there exists a certain
level of disconnect between the charitable causes and interested individuals. “There are probably hundreds of volunteer opportunities,” said Wenger. “Schools, PTOs, service organizations, nonprofits - they all need volunteers. There’s just a huge list of groups for people to get involved with. I just hear so many people say they need help. I think they all need help.” “I think all people have an opportunity to volunteer on some level,” he added. “Anybody can pick up trash. Can everybody lead a board? No. Some of these things don’t require skills, only effort. I think a lot of people don’t realize how many opportunities there are.” In addition to his work with Venture Lititz, Wenger also chairs the leadership team at his place of worship, Lititz Church of the Brethren. In the past, he served as a treasurer and team manager for
boys’ and girls’ soccer programs in the Warwick School District. “I don’t do any of it for recognition,” said Wenger. “I like to be behind the scenes and get things done. But if you don’t recognize it, then people won’t know things need to be done.” For Jim, volunteering is a Wenger family tradition; it’s a frame of mind he inherited from his parents. While it’s always been very important, it may have become even more important as he’s grown older. “It’s always been part of my life because my parents set that example,” said Wenger. “Once you get involved, you see other people doing more than you, and it becomes a growing snowball. The flip side of that is that you have to be able to say ‘no.’ If you can’t do it well, your efforts become watered down. “Volunteering does make a difference,” concluded Wenger.

When the flea market winds down at Root’s Country Market and Auction on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the action will shift from bargain hunting to horsepower. As the flea market vendors pack up, the grounds will fill with cars, trucks and motorcycles for the annual Fall Car, Truck and Cycle Show, running from 4 to 7 p.m. at 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. “After the flea market closes at 3, we will fill the field with cars,” said Chris Fletcher, flea market manager and special events coordinator. “The show is open to any type of vehicle.” Fletcher noted that he’s particularly looking for Jeeps to enter the show, as there is a special trophy just for a Jeep. “Everybody’s able to come and enter this show, whether you bring a $500 beater car or something that you’d find at a nice auction house,” he said, adding that a variety of trophies will be awarded in various categories. Door prizes will be drawn every half hour, and awards will be presented beginning at 6:30 p.m. Winners must be present to receive an award. Proceeds from the show will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse, a nonprofit that provides free educational, therapeutic and career training programs for people of all ages with Down syndrome. “Our judges are actually participants and families from GiGi’s,” Fletcher said. “We also have a trophy just for GiGi’s, where they choose the best, most outgoing

Anyone who enters a vehicle in the show will receive a booklet for discounts and giveaways at various stands throughout the market, Fletcher said. He said the car show has grown steadily over the years, with about 60 vehicles participating last year. There is room for 130 on-site. Root’s has held a spring and fall car show for many years, but it moved to Tuesday evenings a few years ago. “We used to have it on a Saturday, but we started doing it on Tuesdays to help bring people into the market that day,” Fletcher said. “It helps to bring in an evening crowd.” He encourages anyone to enter a
