Forthe Lititz Library Knitters, knitting is much more than a way to pass time. It is an art, a craft, an avenue for creation. And for the club’s members, the act of knitting is more enjoyable when shared.

The Lititz Library Knitters meet three times a month at the Lititz Public Library, on the first and third Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and on the last Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Not only are the meetings very informal, but they also serve as a form of support for knitters and their knitting endeavors.

At Lititz Public Library, knitting’s not a solitary pursuit

as needed, but we don’t teach.”

The Lititz Library Knitters are currently made up of about 20 to 25 mostly local women. The members create mainly clothing items - hats, scarves, sweaters and shawls - but also dish cloths, afghans, children’s toys and bazaar items.

“We really enjoy meeting with one another. There is a sense of community. The knitting brings us together.”

“The goal is to promote knitting and other fiber manipulative arts,” said Barbara Elliott, who serves as the Lititz Library Knitters’ moderator and spokesperson. “But we also want to promote fellowship and the sharing of ideas. We help each other

“It’s a way to meet like-minded people. We really have all levels of expertise,” said Elliott. “At the meetings, we always start with introductions if there’s someone new, just to make them feel welcomed. Then we go around the room and each person will talk about what they’re working on or display a finished product. We want everyone to feel like what they’re working on is valuable. I do moderate the meeting in that respect, and I try to have some tidbit of information about knitting. Pretty much everyone has a couple of things going.”

Stair climb will honor fallen first responders

Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up, and registration will also be available online at www.lancasterstair climb.org until Friday, Sept. 15.

Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium.

They will circle the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. During the climb, each participant will carry an image or the badge of a first responder who was killed while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event. Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did

While it can also be performed by a machine, knitting is the act of using two needles to interloop fibers or yarn into rows to create a finished product.

Elliott’s grandmother gave her a pair of knitting needles when Elliott was a child. “Besides that, I’m selftaught,” she said. “I’ve studied through books, talking with other

knitters and word of mouth. I’ve been involved in fiber arts always. I was knitting sweaters in high school. If it’s something you like to do, you find time to do it.”

Building good habits through biking

When youths are riding bikes as part of Lifecycles, they are doing much more than getting some exercise.

As Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer explained, neurological research has emerged in the past few years showing that when you challenge yourself to do hard things and you complete them, you can actually change the way your brain works.

“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer. One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other teams completed a 380-mile journey around Lake Champlain and Lake George on the border of New York and Vermont.

“They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed

through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”

Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.

“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who wants to join can join.” Participants do not need to be experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed

in a group based on their skill level.

Lifecycles has a mission of building young men and women of character. “We do it through long-distance cycling,” Lee remarked. “We invest in the kids, and we provide a faith-based curriculum, one for the girls and one for the boys. The program is all about outdoor adventure and building self-confidence.”

He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confi-

Kiwanis Club offers book giveaway

The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area participated in the Kids Night Out held on Aug. 8 at

the Tree House Playground on Second Avenue. Kiwanis focuses on children in the local community and around the world. Books were distributed to children along with pretzels and yo-yos.

Close to 2,000 books were given to children of all ages and parents, reported Melissa Warner, the Kiwanis Club’s book distribution chairperson. One young girl asked if the club had any books on weather, and she received three books on the subject. Some children immediately began reading once they received their books.

Warner said the Kiwanis Club hands out more than 3,000 books a year to children as part of the Kiwanis International’s efforts to improve literacy. Donations of new or gently used children’s books are sought; to arrange pickup or delivery, email Melissa Warner at geom1948@ comcast.net. For more details, call the Kiwanis hotline at 717-560-2295.

Last year, the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area donated more than $100,000 to local chil-

dence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging environment where boys and girls can discover more of their gifts, growing into the person they were created to become.”

This season of Lifecycles will wrap up in mid-October, and the new season will begin next April. The program is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. For more information, visit www.life cyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511.

dren’s organizations and charities. Over the past 28 years, this club of fewer than 25 active members has donated over $1 million.

Currently, the club is preparing for the 22nd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 7. Fewer than 400 tickets remain for sale. This event has sold out every year, so community members are encouraged to purchase tickets soon. Additionally, volunteers are needed from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Each volunteer will be assigned one of 30 locations as a ticket marker or server. Each volunteer will

receive a voucher that entitles him or her to five tastings of his or her choice.

To become a volunteer, email Louise Stickler at LStickler49@hotmail.com or call the aforementioned number.

as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey.

“We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year. It’s a common bond for people,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up. Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the memorial makes that stronger.”

Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s

counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.

Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster 13 years ago as a way to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. Members of the community, especially first responders, immediately rallied in support of the memorial.

“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone promised in the days after 9/11,” Yuill said. “Even the younger generations participate, despite being babies when it happened. They know that it’s about honor and sacrifice, and they honor that.”

Landis at Home adds care navigator

As part of its goal of providing highly personal and individualized at-home care, Landis at Home has added a new position to serve residents in Landis Communities’ two downtown Lancaster rental locations.

The care navigator is the public face of Steeple View Lofts and Landis Place on King, ensuring residents have access to resources and support to meet their wellness goals. The role involves communication and coordination of care between the community, residents, families, and partners. Responsibilities include conducting initial welcome interviews, arranging education for residents, updating resource guides, developing care navigation plans, engaging with care providers, and serving as a key contact for escalated care needs.

Shaneea “Shay” Brown has been hired to fill this role. She has a MSW from Millersville University and significant work experience

with those who are aging and in community programs. Brown noted that she will seek to help foster residents’ physical, financial, environmental, emotional, social, vocational, intellectual, and spiritual health.

Landis at Home, a Pennsylvania licensed home care agency, was formed in 2007 and provides home care services to adults who live on the campus of Landis Homes or who live within a 15-mile radius of Lititz. More information can be found at www.LandisAt Home.org.

Firefighters from across the East Coast travel to Lancaster to participate in the stair climb each year.

St. Peter’s offering community members chance to sing “Messiah”

They’ve got the sheet music. They’ve got the technical and organizational expertise. They’ve got the professionals.

The only thing missing for St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is you.

St. Peter’s is searching for singers to join members of its choir for the Sunday, Dec. 17, production of Handel’s “Messiah” at the church at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. No auditions or prior knowledge of “Messiah” is required, but singers should be able to read music. Copies of the score will be available for purchase at the rehearsals, or singers can bring their own copy of the Novello edition.

“It’s a group activity. You learn and get to make friends,” said St. Peter’s music director Tom Berdos. “It’s a way to join with others and make a statement. Singing is physiologically healthy. It’s a chance to work towards a common goal. It can be a real moving experience for some. It’s different things for different people.”

Berdos and St. Peter’s have already secured 36 singers for the choir, but they’d like to add up to 60 more. On the day of the show, the choir will join with four professional soloists and a 24-member professional orchestra to produce the legendary oratorio.

Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s, and they will be conducted each Thursday - except Thanksgiving, Nov. 23 - up until the performance. Individuals inter-

ested in becoming part of the choir should email Berdos at tom.berdos@stpeters lutheran.org.

“We have a core group on our singer list,” said Berdos. “We have a good start and a really good mix. We could do it with what we have now, but we’re trying to open it up to the community. We want the community to enjoy it. I’m the kind of person who likes to get everyone involved. If I’d get 100 singers, I’d find a way to get everyone up there.”

On the day of the performance, a final dress rehearsal will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m., just before the start of the 4 p.m. show. It is during that time that the choir’s skills will first be blended with the talents of the soloists and orchestra.

“The biggest job is to train the choir,” said Berdos. “(‘Messi-

ah’ is) typically not easy music. It’s going to take some work. But there are people out there who have experience singing. Experience definitely helps, although people who want to explore something new can try it.”

Normally up to three hours long, “Messiah” has been shortened to 75 minutes for the St. Peter’s performance, which will highlight the Christmas music portion of the oratorio. The Dec. 17 performance will mark the 20th time that Berdos has produced “Messiah,” but it will be the first time at St. Peter’s. “It’s like an opera without stage action,” said Berdos. “It’s about Jesus being prophesied. It talks about Christ being born. It’s about Christ reigning. ... In Handel’s day, he didn’t write it for the purpose of worshiping, but he used biblical themes.”

are a collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible College’s school year.

Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances. “Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal arts this year.”

The Arts & Culture Series will launch on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m., with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.

“I’m excited about the

diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”

Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tianxu An

on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spirituals on Oct. 29; performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1 and 2; a performance by soprano Samantha Hankey on March 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tanya Gabrielian on March 16; and a concert by the British vocal ensemble Apollo5 on April 5.

“Not only are our spaces beautiful, it’s also excellent artists and unique artists,” said Hoover. “That just makes for a neat experience. I love being able to bring so many wonderful artists straight to the people of Lancaster. It’s about introducing people to different genres.”

“It’s been referred to as a type of repetitive Zen movement,” said Elliott. “I can do it while I’m watching TV. If I’m doing something more intense, I’ve got to focus on the project. You budget your time just like anything else.”

The Lititz Public Library started the knitting group in 2017.

“The friendships have

been building,” said Elliott. “We really enjoy meeting with one another. There is a sense of community. The knitting brings us together. We want to spread the word so we can get another generation going. That’s another reason to do this: to foster knitting for the future. You want to plant a seed. If you don’t teach the skills, it’s going to die out.”

The Day of Plenty weekend will wrap up on the evening of Sept. 30 with the Lititz Christian High School Fall Ball. High school students will come together for a evening of dancing. Admission to the dance will be by donation.

The 24-hour Day of Plenty and Harvest Fest fundraiser will benefit Lititz Christian School’s annual fund. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website.

will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, who will also perform his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find

ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.

To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all audience members to gather in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, LópezGavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.

Free parking is available onsite. Tickets range in price and can be purchased by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or visiting www.lancastersymphony.org/ rhapsody-in-blue.

Lancaster, LEADS seeking Christmas tree

The city of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season.

Property owners who have an appropriately shaped, 25foot or taller evergreen that they are planning to remove are invited to contact city arborist Rick Anderer at 717291-4846 or randerer@city oflancasterpa.gov.
