In Lititz, peace is an event. “There is no true peace without justice,” said Jeanine Strom Boyer, outreach and relationship ministry coordinator for Lititz Church of the Brethren (LCOB) and an organizer of the upcoming PeaceFest. “When there is conflict or disagreement, we work together to be reconciled and find a resolution. In matters in which we are not of the same mind, we seek to live with forbearance toward one another. We believe that war only brings destruction

Orange St., Lititz, will host the inaugural PeaceFest: Forging Peace and Cultivating Justice. The event, which is a collaboration of a handful of local Church of the Brethren congregations - including ones in Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Mountville and York - will advocate for the concept

25 Years of Remembrance Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. They will circle it five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. “We’re just trying to carry on the motto that people developed back then to never forget,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “The way we can keep the memories there is to have this once a year.” Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up. Online registration has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event. Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers. “A lot of them do,” Yuill said. “Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.” In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. or one day in the middle of September, everyone in Lititz is Italian. “For me, (Italian culture is) special because so much of what I experience is this love of family, community, being joyful together, and it’s usually around food,” said Justina Latura, one of the organizers of L’Italia Festival. “There’s always food. There’s so much food, and pride and love in the food. The culture is tied to eating, and all the food is made with love. “It’s very similar to the food culture we’re so proud of in Lancaster,” continued Latura. “I feel like it’s an easy comparison. Tradition is so important in Italian culture, and it’s important in Lancaster as well.” In a very short time, L’Italia Festival has taken its place alongside all of the great events that Lititz hosts. This year’s edition of the annual celebration of what it

The L’Italia Festival will feature staged musical and vocal performances, live cooking demonstrations, food trucks, food tents, beverage gardens, a kids’ activity zone, a car show and a craft market. “We have the use of a lot of green space,” said Latura. “We try to keep it active all day long. The festival is a celebration of Italian culture. It is created for and supported by Italian Americans and people who aren’t Italian at all. We really try to highlight culture, food, music and dance.” Last year’s L’Italia Festival, which was conducted in Lititz Springs Park, drew nearly 20,000 visitors from all over Lancaster County, surrounding communities and neighboring states. “L’Italia Festival seems to be a great partnership with the rest of the community,” said Latura. “It’s really supposed to be a collaborative event. We

It’s blossomed through the commitments of its organizers. “There was a small group of Italians in Lititz; they met around these dinner gatherings and a desire to speak and promote the Italian language,” said Latura. “We have a large group of Italians who have immigrated to the Lititz and Lancaster area. It was like, ‘Hey, why don’t we have this picnic in the summer?’ And 3,000 people showed up. “ T h e n e x t ye a r, we realized we had a festival on our hands,” concluded L atura . “ We tur ned a picnic into this great festival in five years. Peace Festival from pg 1 to turning weapons into items of hope. “ T he event has been named a fest because we want it to have a festival atmosphere,” said Strom Boyer. “A special gathering with music and food where people can have fun as well as learn ways to live peacefully and growing into a more just world.” Hundreds of people from across central Pennsylvania are expected to attend PeaceFest. “ T his is a f irst- time event,” said Claiborne. “We want people to come to the event, to participate with others in fun and educational activities. It is the hope that the event will inspire individuals, families, congregations and community organizations to explore practical ways of cultivating peace and justice in ever yday life.”
The PeaceFest is a specific example of the broad role that LCOB plays in the community. During the colder months, LCOB hosts a community meal for residents of the Warwick School District. “As the Church of the Brethren, we want to passionately live and share the radical transformation and holistic peace of Jesus Christ through relationship-based neighborhood engagement,” said Strom Boyer. “It looks like our being a positive voice for peace. It looks like offering safe space for groups doing vital outreach into our community, such as Meals on Wheels and support groups. Creative Works to Present “Lewiston” Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Lewiston” at The Hive - Lancaster, 800 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. held throughout the country, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. For those unable to attend the event, a donation link is listed on the aforementioned website. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event usually raises around $20,000. “They always had a counseling services unit, but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they have up in New York City.” Yuill helped establish Lancaster’s stair climb 16 years ago to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Bucca. Yuill met Bucca at a training program in New York before Bucca was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. “(Ronald) and his partner were driving out somewhere when they heard

Each participant in the climb will be wearing a badge honoring somebody who died on Sept. 11, 2001. “You think of 343 people, when you start reading their names off, it takes over 20 minutes to do,” Yuill said. “That’s when the enormity of the whole things hits you.”

Church Posts Anniversary Service Old Zion German Reformed Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Lititz (Bricker ville), will host its 82nd annual anniversary service and a grave m a r k i n g ce re m o ny o n Sunday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. The service provides an opportunity to reflect on Old Zion’s rich history and faith traditions. This year’s theme will be “Bricker ville 1776,” celebrating the 250th anni-
versary of the Declaration of Independence. The Rev. William LaSalle will portray the Rev. John Christopher Gobrecht, who served as the minister at Old Zion from 1770 to 1779 as well as at other local churches. The worship service will include music and hymns from the period, and Peggy Grabowski will play the historical pump organ. A freewill offering will be received. Immediately after the
worship service, Old Zion C h u rc h , t h e N a t i o n a l Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, and the Rev.
