ititz Springs Pool is a great community resource. It gives pleasure and enjoyment to hundreds of community members throughout the summer. But at the end of the season, Lititz Springs Pool (LSP) really goes to the dogs. “I am honestly not sure why dogs love water so much,” said Mike Pesesky, who’s been the membership coordinator at the Lititz recCenter, which operates the pool, for four years. “I assume it is dependent on breed and how they’re raised. I would say most dogs that come to this event are inclined to love the water.” The Doggie Swim at Lititz Springs Pool is one of the community’s unique events. It combines the love of dogs, the love of water and the love

of community, and it provides dogs with an opportunity to do one of the many things they love to do - swim. This year’s Doggie Swim will be held at Lititz Springs Pool, which is located at 201 Maple St., from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Everyone and their dogs are welcome. There is an entrance fee associated with the Doggie Swim, visitors are limited to two dogs per person and proof of up-to-date vaccinations are required. “The goal is to have a nice, lighthearted end-of-season event for members of the community and allow them to bring their pups and let them have a blast in the water,” said Pesesky. “In my experience, the vibe is relaxed and fun loving because who doesn’t love to watch dogs run around and have the times of their See Doggie Swim pg 12

Suicide Isn’t Someone Else’s Problem; It’s Ours BY JEFF FALK

It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” The organization’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. See Suicide pg 8

The event will include presentations by Shane Claiborne, who is a speaker, an activist, an author, and a co-founder of RAWtools Philly. There will also be a demonstration by RAWtools, an organization guided by the vision to “disarm hearts, forge peace, and cultivate justice.” RAWtools is known for literally forging guns into garden tools, echoing Isaiah 2:4. Throughout the event, attendees may also enjoy

food trucks, music, face painting, balloon animals, the Tree House Playground, and a variety of hands-on activities for people of all ages while engaging in conversations about peacebuilding, community care, understanding, and well-being. The Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their surviving dependents with financial relief for necessities of life such as food, shelter, fuel, and clothing. Since the inception of the VTA, DMVA has awarded more than $8.6 million to assist over 9,650 service members, veterans, and their families with emergent financial needs.

Eligible veterans or their survivors may qualify for up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. To be eligible, a veteran must have served a period of active duty in the armed forces of the United States and received a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable. Servant Stage from pg 1 “It moves pretty quickly, and it has this Golden Age of Broadway feel to it,” said Bauer. “It’s a period piece set in the late 1800s, with big dance numbers and a big cast. It’s mostly a lighthearted show, and it’s definitely for all ages. I think the audience can connect with the characters.” Nearly 150 individuals are involved with Servant Stage’s production of “Anne of Green Gables,” a roster that includes performers, musicians, set builders, production team members, ushers and concession stand workers. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. It helps to create this feeling of a town.” Since its founding in 2015, Servant Stage has

generated more than 100 productions and staged more than 1,500 performances. Currently, Servant Stage, which is headquartered at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, is producing more than 200 performances each year. “I think we ’re really unique in walking the line between community theater and professional theater,” said Bauer. “We want to be accessible and have educational opportunities. At this point, I think Servant Stage is the largest pay-as-you-will theater troupe in the country. That makes us very unique. “The beauty of theater

is just the way it brings communities together and people together,” Bauer continued. “That’s the why of why we do theater. Both within the cast and in the audience, there are these shared experiences.” Servant Stage will also stage Lion King Kids at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, as well as 27 performances of Joy to the World from Friday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Dec. 20, at various locations across Lancaster County. The ice cream social will feature the biggest concert event in the foundation’s history. The Eighties Club, or TEC, will perform begin-

ning at 6:30 p.m. T E C wa s fo unde d in the summer of 2024 by five musicians seeking a fresh and exciting musical direction that ref lected their passion for the energetic sounds of the 1980s. TEC covers music by artists such as Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis, INXS, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson,

Church Posts Bible Studies Middle Creek Church, 351 Middle Creek Road, Lititz, will offer two Bible studies for women this fall. Both programs will be held on Wednesdays starting Sept. 16. A study on the book of Esther will be offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Participants will discuss how God worked behind the scenes in the life of Esther and how he continues to work in people’s lives today. It’s a very difficult subject matter, but people come to ge ther to talk ab out s olutions . L ike, ‘What could we be doing differently? What could we be doing better?’ No single organization can prevent suicide; it takes a community.” More than 270 individuals are expected to attend the conference, including health care and mental health care professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people connecting and talking a b o u t a ve r y d i f f i c u l t topic. I see people walking away with hope. Conversations continue beyond the conference. We have made

progress with the stigma, but there are too many people still struggling in silence. It gives people insight and motivation, and they walk away with tools they can use right away.” In 2025, a total of 87 L ancaster County res idents were victims of suicide, the highest total since 2012. This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is ver y complicated,” said McDevitt.

“Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced a redirection of the stigma. Many folk s still don’t know the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties oversees the

suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The organization, which employs six full-time staff members and six par ttime staff members, has been operating for more than 70 years. “We’ve been around for a ver y long time,” said McDevitt. “A lot of people know us as ‘MHA.’ We’ve always been known for education, advocacy and support, and now I think we’re going deeper.”

Cherry is the owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, a mobile operation based in Charleston, S.C. A lifelong

living history enthusiast, he has combined his culinary expertise with a passion for 18th-century foodways to revive traditional baking methods using heritage and landrace grains. Cherry educates the public by making period-correct breads and dishes at historic sites and re-enactments. In 2019, his dedication to historical accuracy earned him a research fellowship at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where he now ser ves as the resident baker. Some visitors and their dogs stay and play for two hours; some chill for 20 minutes. “ T h e b e s t t h i n g fo r me is how excited and happy the dogs are to run around, play and splash in the water,” said Pesesky, a Millersville resident and owner of Jester, a westie/ terrier mix, and of Julie, a chorkie. “I think everyone enjoys seeing the wide variety of breeds, especially because they come in all shapes and sizes.” The Doggie Swim will ser ve as Lititz Springs Pool’s last official event of the 2026 season. The pool opened around the Memorial Day holiday. “I can’t speak for the relationships others have w i th the ir do gs ,” s aid Pesesky. “But for me, it’s ab out always k now ing they love you unconditionally and that they are happy to see you, no matter if you’ve been gone for 15 minutes or 15 days. Dogs see owners at their best and at their worst. They are family.” L i t i t z S p r i n g s Po o l hosted its first Dog gie Swim in 2014. “For me, the Do g g ie Swim is one of my favorite events because it typically signifies the end of the summer at the pool,” said Pesesky, “because there are a lot of people who work incredibly hard to ensure Lititz Springs Pool is a safe and enjoyable place to attend year in and year out.
