Gene Health Project Supports Future of Health Care WellSpan Health is looking for a bunch of good folks - conscientious people, proactive people, big-picture people. The health care system is encouraging individuals to participate in a transformative study called “The Gene Health Project.” It’s a project that can change the direction of participants’ health, as well as help others. “The opportunity to do prevention is tremendous,” said Dr. David Kann, medical director of genetics and precision medicine for WellSpan Health. “We can prevent certain diseases. Most people who participate really want to advance research, more than help themselves. Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www.wellspan.org. There are no costs involved with participating. WellSpan Health operates 12 hospitals and more than 250 patient care facilities in central

Fanelli is an advocate for student-athletes. “It’s the story of the sports and the athletes,” said Fanelli. “They all get one shot at an athletic experience. They each get four years. It takes a whole lot of interest, a whole lot of community support, to make things run.” Fanelli is also the Warwick School District’s new athletic director (AD). After officially being hired in May, Fanelli took over the reins of a thriving Warrior athletic department from Earl Hazel, who retired after four years in the position, at the end of June. Fanelli comes to Lititz from the Eastern York School District, where he was the athletic director for two years. Prior to that, he spent two years in an assistant athletic director

Gretna Music has announced the final concerts of its 2026 summer season, taking place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. In addition to mainstage performances and special events, the schedule includes 20-minute First Listen concerts featuring local high school and college-age students. First Listen performances are free of charge and occur before mainstage performances. Unless otherwise noted, all other events have a fee, and tickets may be purchased at www.gretnamusic.org. One-hour Well-Being Concerts will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at noon and 7 p.m. Pianist Mathis Picard and heart meditation specialist and wellness practitioner Leslie Bures will lead immersive experiences blending live music with mindfulness. Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or meditation pillow and settle in on stage near the performers. Mats and pillows will also be available to borrow. The Mathis Picard Trio will perform on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. New York-based pianist Picard, originally from France and Madagascar, blends diverse musical and cultural influences. An ASCAP Next Generation Songwriters recipient and Juilliard alumnus mentored by Kenny Barron, Picard has performed worldwide. In addition to Picard, the trio features Parker McAllister on bass and Jaylen Petinaud on drums. The concert will be preceded by a First Listen segment by the Pop’s House Youth Jazz Ensemble at 6:45 p.m. The group is made up of seven teens from the Harrisburg area. The Lysander Trio will perform on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. The trio is devoted to inventive programming, finding intriguing connections between works from all over the world, and uncovering lesser-known gems of the repertoire from the past to the present. Kwanyun Loo, a 15-year-old cellist, will be featured in a First Listen performance at 2:15 p.m. Kwanyun is a diploma candidate at the Curtis
Institute of Music, where he was accepted at age 13 and now studies with Peter Wiley, Yumi Kendall, and Nick Canellakis. New Jazz Underground will perform on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Consisting of Abdias Armenteros, saxophonist and composer; Sebastian Rios, bassist and composer; and TJ Reddick, drummer, the group strives to redefine jazz, blending its rich traditions with modern hip-hop, pop, and Afro-Latino rhythms. After the performance, the ensemble will stay for a jam session with young local musicians. The Borromeo String Quartet, with pianist Henry Kramer, will perform on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m. The quartet plays music from the classical music canon along with works by 20th- and 21st-century composers. A First Listen performance will feature the 12 Strings Cello Trio at 2:15 p.m. The chamber music group consists of Philadelphia-area high school students Aileen Chan, Claire Chen, and Markus Johnson.

Formed from a lone faith-based residential home in Lititz, Friendship Community has been serving adults with disabilities since 1972. Currently, the nonprofit offers services like 23 residential homes for two to four individuals, home-based support, day programs and worship services. “People with intellectual disabilities are often underestimated, and simply browsing the artwork on our site helps challenge those stereotypes in a meaningful way,” said Goldsborough. “My hope is that people leave feeling inspired by what we do at Friendship Community and feel encouraged to support a mission rooted in inclusion and empowerment. Both locations are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. “Artists are able to create and grow their skills in the Heart studios and then sell their work at the Heart Gallery and Market,” said Goldsborough. “The gallery component features artwork created exclusively by Heart artists in the program. Every art purchase directly supports the artists, as they receive a commission form each sale of their work. The market side features goods from small businesses across the nation, including spices, sauce, skincare products, dog treats and chocolates. Each of these products support businesses that are empowering individuals with ID/A, whether through providing employment opportunities or through entrepreneurs who are business owners themselves.” The newly expanded downtown Heart Gallery and Market allows more space for more artists to create, to showcase their work, to elevate talent and to host more community events. It’s also enabled the organization to introduce products from entrepreneurs across the country. In addition, the Friendship Community has expanded its online retail space at www.friendshipart .net. “Our goal is also to create a space where people of all abilities feel welcomed and safe,” said Goldsborough. “During events at the Heart Gallery and Market, we often see

Soon we will have the largest data bank in the world. People who participate can learn some of the characteristics about themselves. The benefit to volunteers is that they learn about these problems and then they’re in position to prevent serious problems. “If volunteers have a family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If a question ever comes up
in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there. “After that, the hope is to continue the project,” said Dr. K ann. “ We ’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 g e n e s ,” co n t i n u e d D r. like the color of our eyes or the color of our hair. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges currently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “The more you spread it, the more you’re able
to help people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been most ly reactive,” concluded Dr. K ann. “Now we’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”

Fanelli from pg 1 role at Hempfield, in support of AD Ryan Landis. “Things are going really well,” said Fanelli. “Everyone here has been super supportive. All the coaches have been very helpful. It’s given me time to develop. They’re learning how I operate, and I’ve been asking questions about how they operate. “This is where I wanted to be,” Fanelli continued. “This is where (my wife and I) want to set up our lives. Hopefully, I’ll have kids come through the school district. I want to be part of the community.” The Warwick School District
sponsors and hosts 27 interscholastic sports programs, as well as a host of middle school athletic activities. More than 400 students in grades seven through 12 compete in sports at Warwick. As athletic director, Fanelli’s role is one of support, oversight and facilitation. “I think it’s really important to differentiate between athletics and club sports,” said Fanelli. “The role of interscholastic athletics is to educate and to be an extension of the classroom. We want to make sure the policies and guidelines we’re teaching all day in school are being enforced
on the playing fields, like how you treat other people. “We have to treat others with respect and work for common goals,” he added. “We really want kids to discover themselves.” Not unlike the school district itself, the Warrior athletic department is an extension of the community, is supported by the community and is a reflection of the community. “It helps how much buy-in there is from the community,” said Fanelli. “I think there’s a genuine care for the athletic department. Everyone is rooting for everyone else. I see a lot of

continuity. I see a lot of athletes who want to support each other and coaches who want to support each other.” Fanelli graduated from Exeter Township Senior High School and York College of Pennsylvania. “ I t h i n k t h e re’s a f a i r l y common misconception about what an athletic director does,” said Fanelli. “There are a lot of nuances to it. It’s given me time to develop. They’re learning how I operate, and I’ve been asking questions about how they operate. “This is where I wanted to be,” Fanelli continued. “This is where (my wife and I) want to set up our lives. Hopefully, I’ll have kids come through the school district. I want to be part of the community.” The Warwick School District
sponsors and hosts 27 interscholastic sports programs, as well as a host of middle school athletic activities. More than 400 students in grades seven through 12 compete in sports at Warwick. As athletic director, Fanelli’s role is one of support, oversight and facilitation. “I think it’s really important to differentiate between athletics and club sports,” said Fanelli. “The role of interscholastic athletics is to educate and to be an extension of the classroom. We want to make sure the policies and guidelines we’re teaching all day in school are being enforced
on the playing fields, like how you treat other people. “We have to treat others with respect and work for common goals,” he added. “We really want kids to discover themselves.” Not unlike the school district itself, the Warrior athletic department is an extension of the community, is supported by the community and is a reflection of the community. “It helps how much buy-in there is from the community,” said Fanelli. “I think there’s a genuine care for the athletic department. Everyone is rooting for everyone else. I see a lot of

Bike & Hike Fundraiser Slated The 30th annual Bike & Hike, benefiting COBYS Family Services (COBYS), will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The fundraiser will include a 3-mile walk through Lititz, 10- and 25-mile bicycle rides, and the Tasty Tour, a 1.5-mile walk through Lititz with stops at Dosie Dough, Slate Cafe, Cafe Arabella, and Brazilian Table. All activities will end back at the church, where participants may enjoy the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration. The Bike & Hike will begin at noon on Sept. 13 with registration for the 25-mile bicycle ride, and event start times will be staggered throughout the afternoon. Hours on Friday are by appointment at 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. No appointment is needed for Saturday shopping , which will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. “Free clothing, accessories, shoes, coats, linens, housewares, games, etc., will all be available for shoppers,” said Kris Gray,

who organizes the event with Barb Dunmire. “ E ve r yo n e i s w e l co m e to come shop for some ‘new-to-you’ clothes and accessories.” This is the 26th year for the event, which began after organizers shifted a church outreach to meet local needs. The church used to send clothing to a mission out of state, but it was expensive to ship the items, and organizers thought they could make a bigger impact in Manheim. O ver the years, they have tweaked the event to provide the best shopping experience for guests. “Before we offered appointments, the event o n S at u rd ay w a s ve r y crowded with enthusia s t i c s h o p p e r s ,” G r a y said. “Now, since several hundred people shop on Friday, the Saturday event is not crowded, and it is quite easy to shop. And we will still have lots of quality men’s and ladies’ clothing available on Saturday.” God’s Clothing Closet will feature something for everyone, Dunmire said, adding, “There are always a lot of ladies’ clothing and accessories to give away, from gowns to sleepwear and suits to activewear. We even have a good selection of ladies’ and men’s 2X and larger clothing.” She noted that some items go very quickly. “If you need children’s clothing , it would be a
go o d idea to make an appointment for Friday evening,” Dunmire said. “We often run low on children’s clothing by the end of the event.” Clothing comes from the community and members of the congregation. “Some of the clothing and other items at the e v e n t a re d o n a t e d b y Nearly Nu in Manheim when they change over their store for spring and fall,” Dunmire explained. Although the event focuses on clothing, shoppers can peruse a variety of additional items. “There will be new and gently used Bibles and devotional books available,” Gray shared. “There is a plethora of household items - dishes, utensils, glassware, lamps, craft supplies, toys, etc. - available on the porch, so you may shop for those items before you enter the building to shop for clothing.” She added that the organizers are intentional in what happens to anything that doesn’t go home with shoppers. “A l l i te m s l e f t a f te r the event are donated to Jubilee in Manheim, so nothing goes to waste,” she said. People are invited to bring donations of nonperishable food for the Manheim Central Food Pantry when they come to God’s Clothing Closet, but this is not required. Shoppers may also bring their own bags, but

To make an appointment for Friday evening, call 717665-3757 and leave a message with a name, a phone number, a good time to call back and whether child care is needed. “A member of our team will call you back within a day or two to make an appointment,” Dunmire said. “Only a limited number of reser vations are available for Friday evening, so it is best to call early.” The church will accept donations of clothing from Sunday, Aug. 23, through Aug. 28. “Clothing can be placed in bags and left by the front door of the church,” Gray said. “It is extremely helpful if you label the bag with a clue of the contents, such as ‘boys size 10.’” No smoking and no pets are permitted inside the building. Service animals are welcome if they are properly identified. The church is handicapped-accessible and air- conditioned, and there is plenty of parking in a large parking lot.
