The Warwick School District is in the education business, and it knows there are lessons to be learned from every circumstance.
The ongoing renovations at Warwick High School and the school district’s administrative offices won’t hinder the learning process. It will only serve to enhance it by providing opportunities to learn different things in different ways in different settings.
“The word being used is flexible,” said Kristina Szobocsan, who’s entering her 10th school year as the principal of Warwick High School.
“You’ve got to remain flexible. It’s disruptive. It’s a massive renovation. We have to make the best of it because we live in it. We move classrooms all the time, but the
kids have been amazing. They’ve transitioned with no problems. It’s big-time gain for small-time pain.”
When Warwick High School students return to classes on Tuesday,
Aug. 26, they will encounter many of the same challenges that the ongoing $92 million construction project presented last school year.

Child development and school preparation happens through touching, sparking imaginations and social interaction.
At the Hands-on House, it’s not a program. It’s a mindset.
Call it anything you like, but museum officials have named it Ready, Set, Success.
“We’re not program-based,” said Rebecca Ackerman, executive director of Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster. “Ready, Set, Success is an initiative. It’s an approach. It’s not a program. It’s immersive

The Bible is capable of doing many great things. Unlocking the amazing potential of the Good Book requires trust, hope and a little bit of imagination.
Life Awakening explores and applies the healing powers of the Bible.
“When I take people through the Gospel process, it heals childhood trauma. You wouldn’t believe it,” said Linda Ingham, a counselor and the executive director of Life Awakening. “The Gospel of Jesus Christ is very powerful. There’s hope that people have a place where they can go for help.”
A Christ-centered ministry based in Ephrata, Life Awakening is conducting one of its 16 regular fundraisers on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Ephrata Community Church, 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata. The organization’s Night of Blessings promises to be an evening filled with fellowship, discovery and joy.
Attendees, who are asked to park and enter through the Ephrata Community Church’s north entrance, are encouraged to register by calling 717-3542888 by Friday, Sept. 5.
“It’s a time for people to come out and gain a better understanding of what Life Awakening does,” said Ingham. “The feel, the ambiance of the event is that of hope and that of excitement.”
Life Awakening’s Night of Blessings will feature licensed marriage and family therapist Kim Miller speaking on how she employs the Gospel process

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and
and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good
to touch those suffering from trauma. Ingham and Life Awakening’s director of training, Andrea Holder, will also address the gathering about what Life Awakening offers and what it’s all about.
The special event will be enhanced by refreshments, a silent auction and live music.
“The mission is to seek people who are trapped in emotional pain and spiritual pain,” said Ingham. “My favorite part is when the person shares how the Gospel changed their lives. That’s the key. That’s the point. That’s the power. It’s better than the taste of a good brownie or a piece of chocolate cake.”
As many as 100 people are expected to attend Night of Blessings.
“They’re just normal, everyday people who want to hear and learn,” said Ingham.
Organizers of the event are hoping to raise about $10,000 for the ministry.
“The proceeds will go into the general fund for operating costs,” said Ingham.
Life Awakening conducts training sessions for people interested in providing counseling about six or seven times throughout the year.
“We want to train people to do what I do,” said Ingham. “People can learn to apply and join the Gospel of Jesus Christ to live their lives.”
Life Awakening’s three-person staff consists of Ingham, Holder and administrative assistant Chelsea Clark. In addition to Night of Blessings, the ministry is funded through personal donations and fees paid by clients for counseling services.
Overseen by a board of directors, Life Awakening
ministry is headquartered at 55 New St., Ephrata. The organization was established as Wellspring Garden Ministry in 2001, and the organization began holding a yearly fundraising dinner in 2007, before it became Night of Blessings two years ago.
“The founder opened the ministry for women,” said Ingham, a resident of Ephrata, “and it has evolved into a healing ministry for men, women and children. I have watched people get really changed.”
Ingham became the executive director in 2003, and four years later the ministry was renamed Life Awakening.
“In November of 2006, the Holy Spirit told me to change the name to Life Awakening,” said Ingham. “He spoke it in my ear. He said, ‘We’re going to show people what real life awakening is.’”

to classrooms, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems and roofing, which started in January of 2024 and is on schedule, is expected to be completed by the end of the summer of 2026.
Szobocsan and her staff have not had access to the high school building since the 2024-25 school year ended on June 10.
“No one’s been in the building over the summer,” said Szobocsan. “When we go back, we’ll have more space since the project began. We’re going to have more classrooms back, and we’re going to have more hallways and stairwells back. The kids will be in new classrooms and old classrooms, depending upon their schedules.”
School will also begin on Aug. 26 for students in first through eighth grades in the Warwick School District’s middle school, Kissel Hill Elementary School, Lititz Elementary School, John R. Bonfield Elementary School and John Beck Elementary School. Prekindergarten and kindergarten students will report for
school on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
“The first day of school is always a new beginning, a new learning experience,” said Szobcsan. “There’s a ton of excitement. There’s just as much excitement for the first day of school as there is for the last day of school, for different reasons. Kids are excited to see their friends again. There’s a social aspect to it.”
Warwick’s 180-day school year will end on June 5, 2026.
“I don’t think people dread the first day of school,” said Szobocsan. “There’s no doubt that some students have anxiety about school, but there are just as many who are excited about it. I think the teachers are coming back well rested. It’s my belief that all educators put their hearts and souls into it. That work is hard work. That work is important work.”
Of the 3,700 students enrolled in the Warwick School District, 1,225 attend the high school. The Warwick School District employs 750 people, 350 of
whom are considered professional staff members.
“I think every day is different because you respond to what’s going on each day,” said Szobocsan. “On the first day of school, we’re very much interested in making sure no kid is lost. I just love the kids coming back, the chatter of the kids. I don’t like quiet buildings. It’s kind of the way I like Mondays, because it’s a new beginning every week.”
Since school in the Warwick district let out two and a half months ago, educators have been involved with training, goal setting, strategic planning and updating manuals, all in preparation for the coming school year.
“As educators, we value the opportunity we have with kids every day,” said Szobocsan. “Our goal is for kids to become who they want to become. We are an important part of this community, and we want to partner with people to provide the best possible opportunities for our kids. It’s truly an honor to be an educator.”

In a very specific way, Ready, Set, Success is a new take on what Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster, which is located at 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, has been doing for nearly 40 years. Ready, Set, Success is designed for children between the ages of 2 and 6.
Beginning in September, Ready, Set, Success will be presented to the community on an introductory basis. Parents and children will be afforded opportunities to participate in the museum’s Story Stretchers interactive class on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., art classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Explorers on Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Ready, Set, Success will also feature guest experts each week. Additionally, participants will also be directed to the dozens of Hands-on House indoor and outdoor exhibits and stations for further exploration.
Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are entrance fees associated with admission, and memberships are available.
“(Ready, Set, Success) aligns with our focus of fostering development of young children in our community,” said Ackerman, who possesses a background as an educator and as a school administrator. “It helps young children get used to the atmosphere they’re about to go into. The goal is to help them foster curiosity and wonder. We do it with intentionality to encourage children to see new things, embrace trial and error and make adjustments. Play, in particular, is a very powerful tool
that can be used to get ready for school. This is truly immersive play, and it allows kids to be actively engaged in learning.”
The current plan calls for Ready, Set, Success to expand the width and depth of its experiential offerings in January of 2026.
“My absolute favorite thing is watching the adults light up when they see their children progressing,” said Ackerman. “You don’t have to police them. It starts to click for the parent and the child. When a parent can step back and witness the development progress, it’s awesome. Kids are programmed to develop.”
Some of the children’s programs that the Hands-on House offers include Discovery to Go, Summer Camps, Sensory Friendly Sundays, Touch-ATruck, and Winter Camps. The children’s museum also provides opportunities for Scouts to earn badges and for groups to host events like birthday parties.
“There’s really great research that shows children who regularly attend museums score higher in third-grade achievement
tests than those who don’t,” said Ackerman. “Kids are given an opportunity to play, to be bored and to play with each other. Having spaces where kids can experience their fun is a big part of our work. What we see developmentally is children’s worlds get broader as they grow. As they expand to different environments, their sense of self and world expands.”
Hands-on House was established in 1987 by community members with the help of the Junior League of Lancaster.
“It was a community effort to build this museum for children,” said Ackerman. “It has been designed to foster the development of our younger visitors, and it’s intentional. We want to be a community hub that’s accessible for all families. We have to be intentional in carving out time for kids to play. Part of what we’re doing is what we’ve been doing all along. What we haven’t been doing is providing the intentional access for parents.”
