More Than A Taste Annual Lititz Event Is Reimagined

Usually held in late May, the annual Taste of Lititz fundraiser for Venture Lititz has become a staple of the town’s spring season. This year, however, planning the event was challenging to say the least. “As the pandemic and shutdown progressed, we tried to find an alternative way to hold our event,” said Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz. “It went through a lot of reiterations.” The reimagination of Taste of Lititz, sponsored by Listrak and Rohrer’s Quarry, began on Aug. 17 and will

continue through Saturday, Aug. 29. The two-week format was instituted to limit crowd size, encourage social distancing, and give those who wish to take part more time to visit downtown Lititz shops and eateries. During that time, area residents are encouraged to eat at one or more of the Lititz dining establishments in a variety of ways, including utilizing takeout or delivery or dining at an outside venue,

for Bird-in-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Bird-in-Hand’s 2020 season was slated to start on April 2. Magic and Wonder’s first show ever in the venue, “Worlds of Wonder,” was planned to launch on April 8. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, neither theater opened in April, but Magic and Wonder opened on July 20, and Bird-in-Hand is holding two shows starting in August. To open in accordance with green phase regulations, theaters may be at 50% capacity. “We can seat about 175 people (under green), but we will probably do less than that,” said Terry Buda Moser, director of marketing with Birdin-Hand. “We will keep (attendees with their own households) and seat them six feet apart,” she added, noting that hand sanitizer will be available and See Area Theaters pg 3

The Show Must Go On Area Theaters Reopen In Green Phase

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular.

This year, the committee worked to create a time when residents could venture downtown but not overrun businesses. “(We want) to allow for distancing and encourage folks to follow the safety protocols set up by the state,” said DeKarske. “It is so very important to support all small businesses right now, and (Taste of Lititz) is one way for us to do that.”

GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift inperson programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with

The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. TechCelerator Sessions Slated Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA will offer “TechCelerator Fall 2020 = Explore Your Start-Up Tech Business Idea!” The virtual two-hour group and one-hour individual sessions will run from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 15 through Nov. 17. Participants will expand their network; engage with serial entrepreneurs; participate in discussions with experts in marketing, sales and finance to help shape their business; and develop a pitch presentation. The program will consist of a weekly two-hour group session with content experts and a weekly one-hour session with one’s start-up business mentor to discuss individual needs and development opportunities. The goal of the

10-week program is to provide a framework that will enable particpants to have the information needed to determine the right time to start a tech business. Participants’ work will culminate in a 6-minute presentation that will position their business to take the first step toward funding. They will test their presentation skills at the final session, pitching before a group of judges who will offer a $10,000 award to one or more participants. Bird-in-Hand opened with local favorite Ryan and Friends presenting a show called “Comedy and Calamity.” “It’s a very familyfriendly show with ventriloquism and comedy,” said Buda Moser, who noted that Ryan and his five puppet friends made their debut on the Bird-in-Hand stage with this presentation. “We were looking for a family option with comedy that would appeal to a variety of audiences,” added Buda Moser. Ryan and friends opened Aug. 8, with shows running through Saturday, Oct. 17. “The GÜT Life,” starring Nathan Garner as Simon Yoder and Monica DePaul as his wife, Eliza, will run from Thursday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 23. Buda Moser explained that the show focuses on an Amish couple in their mid-40s looking back over 20 years of marriage. The 90-minute show tells stories from their lives growing up on farms and then veering off when Eliza left the Plain community for a time

Last year, when Ruhlâ€™s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held its 19th annual Godâ€™s Clothing Closet (GCC) giveaway, more than 650 shoppers attended. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizer Kris Gray knows there will not be more than 375 total. The 20th event, to which the community is invited to shop for free, quality

used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children, will be held over three days rather than a few hours on a single Saturday morning. Another change is that organizers will assign time slots so that the number of shoppers in the gymnasium will be limited to 25 at a time, with 15 slots available over the three-day period. Masks will be required for all who attend, and shoppers will only be allowed 45 minutes of time in the building. â€œAll shoppers must be registered for a time slot,â€? said Gray, who noted that those wishing to attend must call Barb at 717-201-7566 to reserve a spot on one of the following days: Thursday, Aug. 27, or Friday, Aug. 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. each day or Saturday, Aug. 29, from 8 a.m. to noon. Each hour on the hour, 25 shoppers will be allowed into GCC. â€œShoppers should arrive 15 minutes prior to their time slot and wait in their car after checking in,â€? explained Gray. Shoppers should enter the church by the door near the carport. They will exit by a different door so as not to pass new shoppers who are entering. No child care will be provided this year, and food and blood pressure checks will not be available. Free Bibles and devotionals will still be given out. Hundreds of volunteer hours go into making GCC work each year, and 2020

Members of Ruhlâ€™s United Methodist Church in Manheim will hold Godâ€™s Clothing Closet on Aug. 27, 28, and 29. This yearâ€™s event will be organized differently, and those wishing to shop at the giveaway must register. will be no exception. â€œWe anticipate volunteers during the event will help to sign in guests, dispense sanitizer, tidy clothes, touch up door handles, clean bathrooms, and help shoppers with special needs,â€? said Gray. Volunteers will also be working prior to the giveaway to sort and organize donations. â€œWeâ€™re still collecting clothing and linens,â€? noted Gray, adding that donations may be left under the church carport beginning Monday, Aug. 24. Items will be accepted through Aug. 28. As in the past, attendees are welcome but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or

toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Last year, six boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. Leftover items from GCC will be donated to various local ministries. Gray noted that attendees of Ruhlâ€™s have stepped up as in the past to help the community as school approaches. â€œI am so blessed because I tell people what weâ€™re doing and they come and help because they believe in helping out,â€? she said of her fellow church members. â€œOur congregation is one that really loves to serve, and they want to volunteer in any way they can.â€?

She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with further-reaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

School Plans Pork Barbecue Fundraiser Manheim Christian Day School, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will host a drive-through pork barbecue fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 21, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. or until sold out. The menu will include pulled pork from Peters’ BBQ, a roll, chips, applesauce, dessert, and a beverage. There will be a fee per meal. There will be no handling of money during the drive-through. A dropbox will be provided for customers to leave payment in the form of cash or checks made payable to Manheim Christian Day School.
