Mother Uses Her Grief to Comfort Others

Death is not an ending; it’s a beginning. When our loved ones leave us, they go to a place that’s better than this one. Those messages can bring comfort and joy.
The death of her son, Jack Nicholson, has provided Donna Nicholson Stief with a platform, and those are just two of the meaningful messages that she delivers through it.
“Bad things happen to everyone, even people who live their lives as good as they can,” said Stief. “God’s Son died too, He was good and God knows about grief. God reminded me that He is the giver of life, on Earth and after life. Jack is alive right now. He’s more alive than we are. He’s good; he’s OK. I wish it never would have happened. But because it did, it gives me incredible hope. I can’t imagine not having that living hope that’s grounded in truth.”

Lancaster Leaders Make Everyone Around Them Better

Not everybody is a leader. But almost all of us have some leadership skills.
Leadership Lancaster’s role in the community is to uncover leadership abilities, foster them and help others to make the most of them.
“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,” said Sarah Kemble, program director for Leadership Lancaster. “They kind of bring everyone together to achieve goals. It’s never about themselves. They are people who put their egos aside.”
A community nonprofit located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, Leadership Lancaster accomplishes its mission through training, exchanges of ideas, connection and collaboration and four key programs - college core class, core class, executive class and encore class. That range of classes allows Leadership Lancaster to bring out the best in individuals, regardless of their experience or their standings in the community.
Mark Freeman is an idea guy; he’s had many great ideas throughout his life. Among his most brilliant is the Chocolate Walk.
The Chocolate Walk brings people to downtown Lititz, engages local businesses and helps kids. It also involves fun and Wilbur Chocolate.
“I was sitting at a table
across from a group of people and I said, ‘I always wanted to have a chocolate festival,’” said Freeman, the founder and chair of the Chocolate Walk committee. “We were talking about some things that we can do that are different. Someone said, ‘That idea has legs.’ Someone made the comment that these events where people go in and out of businesses are nice.
“One of the things we ask our participants is ‘When did you first consider yourself a leader?’” said Kemble. “What it boils down to is that leadership is about caring about people you’re working with in the community, realizing your own unique set of skills and wanting to contribute to something bigger than yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about being your best self and achieving something great with people.

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.
One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.
“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”
LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.
“Purebred dogs are our
focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.
“Being a good owner means making sure your dog has food, water, all of its medical needs are taken care of and that it feels safe emotionally,” added Martin. “If you have a purebred and you realize it has a medical issue, it’s your responsibility not to breed it for the sake of money.”
LKC sponsors and conducts three dog shows each year - The Celtic Classic at the York Expo Grounds in March, the Red Rose Classic at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in May and American Kennel Club-sanctioned Agility Trials at In The Net Sports
“We’re always looking to develop our programs,” Kemble continued. “We’re looking to get more involved with the community. We’re looking to work with nonprofits. We want people to feel more connected to communities. Leadership is a continuous process. We’re all works in progress.”
Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with
more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

LKC also holds educational community events like “Meet the Breeds” and “Responsible Pet Ownership Day.” In addition, LKC awards scholarships to students interested in the veterinary sciences and assists with the funding of local police department K-9 programs.
“We can be a community resource,” said Martin. “Say you’re looking for a particular breed. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of opportunities to do things with dogs.”

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area. “We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States. We’re trying to make sure we have people representing different pockets of the community. We just want to be good stewards of our community.”
Overseen by a 15-member board, Leadership Lancaster employs Kemble, executive director Jennifer Diaz and program coordinator Sage Rivera. In addition to tuition fees - some of which amount to employers covering the costs of employees’ professional development - Leadership Lancaster is funded through grants from

“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”
Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.
“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.”
A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.
“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.”

In 1983, Leadership Lancaster was born out of a two-year initiative on volunteerism by the Junior League of Lancaster and the support of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the program’s more than 3,000 graduates have impacted the Lancaster County community in a variety of meaningful ways.

Sites Needed for Air Quality Sensors
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitoring Initiative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.
PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors.
Areas in Lancaster
County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg, Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierra clubevent@gmail.com and ask for an application, which covers the requirements for becoming a monitor host. Other areas of the county with existing or proposed future sources of air pollution will also be considered.
When positioning of the additional PurpleAir sensors is complete, the Lancaster Group will have installed about 18 of them at various locations
in the county. Assessing Lancaster County’s air quality became a goal of the Lancaster Group as a result of the American Lung Association’s annual surveys, which consistently give the county low marks for short-term particle pollution. The aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.

Placing people ahead of money is the model upon which Life Changes Realty Group’s business is based.
“We’re really community focused,” said Jonathan Cross, a Manheim Township resident who’s been employed by Life Changes Realty Group for two years. “It’s why I’m part of this group. It’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. The question is, ‘What am I doing with my time?’”

“It’s incredible how we’ve been able to do it, especially as piecemeal,” said Cross. “There’s a snowball effect with that. It just adds up in pieces. It’s like drips in a bucket, and now the bucket is overflowing.”
At the request of their clients, Life Changes Realty Group has donated funds to more than 70 causes and nonprofits, including SWAN 4 Kids, animal shelters, St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s Off the Streets program, Gamers Outreach, the Alzheimer’s Association, Building Bridges Foundation, North Star Initiative, Lancaster Conservancy, Power Packs Project and education foundations.
“It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard of most of them.”

In the wake of her son’s passing eight years ago, Stief regularly speaks on the topic of grief - the meaning, the process, the hope - at banquets and other live engagements, at churches and on podcasts. She possesses the ability to tailor her messages about grief to suit each specific audience.
“I remember the day that Jack was killed,” said Stief, a resident of Rothsville.
“It was just a thought that flickered in my mind, ‘This cannot go to waste. This has got to mean something in this world.’ That felt tragic to me. At that time, I didn’t know what it meant. But through my journey I learned it was to help people in their journeys. We were meant to help each other. I want to share with anyone who wants to listen.”
That day, Oct. 26, 2018, was a school day at Warwick High School, a Friday, and it started out like any other day.

“We have a lot of people excited for the event,” said Freeman. “People go to stop number one, sample what’s being served there and then they’re off to store number two. There’s a bit of a treasure-hunt vibe to it. They have to find it and see what they’re serving.”
Some 30 downtown Lititz stores and stops make up the destinations along the Chocolate Walk. At each stop, walkers are treated to sweet or savory samples of unique Wilbur Chocolate delicacies invented and prepared by chefs, chocolatiers and candy makers - everything from ice cream, baked items and confections to

“The police were in pursuit of a reckless driver, and she drove into a school zone,” said Stief. “Their car was hit with full impact at 80 miles an hour; it was a direct hit. The car Jack was in was just annihilated. Jack died on the operating table.
“I was at work when the high school principal called me,” continued Stief. “She said I needed to get to LGH (Lancaster General Hospital); it was significant. I was fully expecting Jack to be in the E.R. (emergency room) and he was in the O.R. (operating room). I met my husband in the quiet room. I didn’t find out that Jack had died until (the surgeon) came into the room. He said Jack didn’t make it, but I still didn’t think he died until later that night.”

But the bride’s brother is determined to end the sisters’ feud and the family curse. Roles are available for 16 actors: six males, six females, two teen girls, one teen boy, and a good-natured minister. Those auditioning should

“It’s all kinds of stuff,” said Freeman. “If you tried eating a third of it, it would be way too much. Some of the treats are packaged so they can be taken with you. Every year, Wilbur creates something special for the Chocolate Walk.”
Organizers of the Chocolate Walk are seeking to make $100,000 from the event. The proceeds will be donated to Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the Lititz Public Library, the Manheim Township Public Library and other nonprofits that support children causes.
“Everybody has fun on Chocolate Walk day,” said Freeman. “It’s a fun, fun day and we raise a lot of money. If you ever walk about Lititz on Chocolate
Jack was a freckled-faced kid who loved sports. After trying football, lacrosse and wrestling, he eventually gravitated toward boxing, where he became a Golden Gloves competitor.
“Jack could make a grown man belly laugh,” said Stief. “He was very comical, and he was very animated. When he told a story he made you feel like you were there.
“He had the most random nicknames for me,” added Stief. “He was hilarious, and I loved the nicknames.”
There is nothing like the bond that exists between a mother and her son.
“I always want to be authentic,” said Stief. “I did not lose Jack and become some super speaker. I learned these things over eight years. I wouldn’t be able to speak on this in year one or year two. I don’t have it all figured out. I’m trying to navigate this road the best I can with God at my side. God knows all things. Our days are numbered. But I know He’s good. We trust things all the time that we don’t understand.”

Even the greatest of Chocolate Walks began with a single step - in 2002, that was 13 downtown stores and $4,000 raised for children-oriented charities. Since its inception, the Lititz Chocolate Walk has donated $1.2 million to kids’ causes.
“There are a lot of people putting a lot of effort into it,” said Freeman. “It’s definitely a tradition in Lititz. Lititz is a very vibrant town on a weekend night. Lititz is known as a foodie town, and I think the Chocolate Walk has played some part (in) that.”
