Lititz Springs Swim Team Is Making Waves

Always doing one’s best. That’s a form of responsibility. Always doing one’s best for others. That’s a form of accountability.

The Lititz Springs Swim Team teaches both accountability and responsibility.

“The biggest thing I want them to learn is that hard work pays off,” said Lititz Springs head coach Michael Janvrin of his swimmers. “If you show up at practice and work hard, you’re going to see results at the end of the season. A lot of kids want to get to the league meet at the end of the season.”

The Lititz Springs Swim Team is a community team of student-age athletes who spend a large portion of their warmer months interacting, training and competing. The Waves, as they and others often refer to them, participate in Division Three of the Lancaster County Summer Swim League, which brings together similar community squads from across the county for wholesome competition.

“We’re all about having fun and encouraging kids to learn all four strokes (freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke),” said Janvrin. “I think it’s really important to do all four in the summer; if (swimmers) want to specialize in the winter (during the high school

A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.

“We want to expand people’s

horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”

The Youth Savings Celebration will be held at the credit union’s Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata and Lancaster locations on Monday, Aug. 3, through Wednesday, Aug. 5. Hours vary by branch, but activities will be held daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 962 E. Main St., Mount Joy, and daily 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz.

The event features opportunities for children up to age 18 to learn about a variety of financial topics.

“We’ve hosted a family-focused youth event for more than 10 years,” Miller said. “Each year features a new theme and activities designed to get kids and teens excited about saving. One of my favorite parts is asking young members what they’re

CAP Members Attend Training Programs

Members of the Lancaster Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently spent a week at the Pennsylvania Wing’s Cadet Training Schools, either continuing their cadet development through hands-on learning and leadership training or by serving on staff. The program concluded with a formal graduation ceremony on June 28.

The Pennsylvania Wing of CAP holds an annual weeklong summer encampment at Fort Indiantown Gap. It includes Basic Encampment, a Leadership Development Course, a STEM Academy, and the Color Guard Academy.

This year’s Basic Encampment program included drill training, warrior knowledge, sports, relay races, physical training, obstacle courses, and aerospace activities. During this process, the

cadets learned how to work in a team, built camaraderie, gained independence, and made memories.

STEM Academy cadets built solar-powered robots, soldered electronic kits, and explored digital forensics. They also participated in trips, including a tour of the Penn State Breazeale Reactor, a trip to Bloomsburg to learn about aerospace engineering, and a visit to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.

Those participating in the Leadership Development Course experienced public speaking, leadership reaction challenges, rappelling from a 200-foot tower, leading drill, learning about different leadership styles, and flying in a UH-60 Black Hawk. The Color Guard Academy cadets not only trained on flag opening ceremonies, but they also took part

in the Battle of the Bulge wreath-laying event and presented the colors at a Stormers baseball game.

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron cadets who completed Basic Encampment are Cadet Senior Airmen Luca Hermosillo and Noah Hermosillo, both of Wrightsville; Cadet Airman 1st Class Kaiden Painter of Leola; and Cadet Senior Airman Theodore Seifferlein of Landisville. Cadet Staff

Cadet Maj. Aaron Keohane of Pequea served as Squadron 10 deputy commander. Two Jesse Jones Composite Squadron senior members volunteered at the Pennsylvania Wing Training Schools. 2nd Lt. Theresa Diehl of Lititz and 2nd Lt. Lisa Catherman of Windsor spent the week helping in the dining facilities.

Ephrata Cloiser Plans Ice Cream Social

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its annual ice cream social.

This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Tom Reinhold, journalist and novelist Larry Alexander, state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream. A highlight of the event will be nature crafts and

games under the tent in the meadow. Prizes will be awarded for the first 50 children who complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt. Children can make their own wooden necklaces and explore the nature trail along the Cocalico Creek. Attendees can learn more about the Historic Landscape Restoration Initiative that will transform the property into a natural habitat for local wildlife, flowers, and plants.

Guides in historical costumes will be stationed in the buildings to greet visitors and interpret the history of the 18th-century structures. The acoustic duo the Groove Slingers will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. in the new amphitheater. The duo plays a variety of blues, rock, jazz, country,

bluegrass, and pop, as well as original music.

Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds of the Cloister, pet therapy dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), and watch demonstrations by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild and Friends. Visitors will also be able to play Colonial games and try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.

Event attendees may also learn more about charity in Ephrata and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.

The museum store will feature 18th-century reproduction toys, crafts, and souvenirs; books of historical interest; and local

handmade arts and crafts. Visitors may also purchase cards, candles, pottery, sleigh bells, and chocolate in the store.

Tickets for the event will be available for purchase in the Visitor Center on the day of the event. There is a discount for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates and youths ages 6 to 10, and children 5 and younger will be admitted free of charge.

Proceeds from the event will support educational programming at Historic Ephrata Cloister, including the Student Historians program and Community Days for local elementary students. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit www .ephratacloister.org or call 717-733-6600.

This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

Discover Lancaster’s passport is a free commemorative booklet that can be picked up at the organization’s headquarters at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, or any of the 23 local historic sites that are part of the tour celebrating America 250. When passport holders visit the participating Lancaster County locations, they will receive a custom-made collectible stamp that can be pasted into their passport booklets.

The free passports also feature deals and coupons that can be redeemed at the 23 historic locations and at other points of interest around Lancaster County. The promotion is good from now until the end of the year.

“Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

participating locations are Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, Historic Rock Ford, the Strasburg Rail Road, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Lancaster Central Market, National Watch and Clock Museum, Susquehanna National Heritage Area, LancasterHistory Museum and Research Center, the Fulton Theatre, the Demuth Museum of Art, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Ephrata Cloister, the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy, and the Christiana Historical Society.

“We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.

“There are so many great

historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”

An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.

“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry. All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

Lititz Art Association Opens Art Gallery

The Lititz Art Association, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, has announced the opening of its own art gallery in Lititz.

Gallery 51, 51 N. Broad St., officially opened on July 24, but the grand opening weekend will be held from Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 10 to 12. There will be exciting offerings, including a giveaway drawing of original artworks created and displayed by the association members. People can purchase giveaway drawing tickets at the shop anytime before the grand opening, and the winners will be selected during the celebration on Sept. 10.

Gallery 51 will display and sell art pieces, including paintings, pottery, jewelry, and textiles by association members as well as other artists. Displays will be rotated monthly to offer new and exciting works and

Meier Named to Dean’s List

Isabella Meier was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Salve Regina University, Newport, R.I. Meier is a resident of Lititz.

To qualify for the dean’s list, full-time students completing at least 12 graded credits must earn a semester GPA of 3.6 or greater, and part-time students completing at least six credits must earn a semester GPA of 3.8 or greater.

“I think the season has gone very well,” said Janvrin, a resident of Brownstown. “We definitely have a different standard of what a good season looks like. We’ve had a lot of kids swim in meets for the first time. But all around we’ve been having a great summer.”

There are more than 70 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18 who are involved with the Lititz Springs Swim Team. Many of those youth swimmers attend school in the Warwick district.

“They are adventurous kids,” said Janvrin. “A lot of kids end up in soccer or basketball, but these kids want to do something different. A lot of them enjoy a challenge. I think they’re very dedicated. It takes a lot of dedication to be in the pool so much.”

For his duties at the head of the program, Janvrin

“You don’t have to start at 5 years old,” continued Janvrin. “We have a lot of swimmers who start at 13 or 15, and they’re having success. If you enjoy being in the water and like a challenge, get involved. We want kids to come out and enjoy the sport the way we did. I’d love to get more people involved in the sport, whether it’s (on) our team or another team.”

The Lititz Springs Swim Team was started in the 1960s. That’s more than 60 years of engaging kids, teaching life lessons and improving social skills.

“It’s been around for a long time,” said Janvrin. “When I was growing up, I knew Lititz Springs was a fun team. I think we’ve kept that fun environment. For us, it’s about ‘Are we doing our best? Middle School Archers Earn Awards

The middle school archery team at Cataylst Christian School earned a second-place finish at the 2026 Pennsylvania State NASP 3D Tournament in March while setting a new school team record of 1,571. This was the first team award received by the Catalyst archery team. Individual awards were also won in the tournament by eighthgrader Danika Martin, who took third place with a personal best score of 280/300, improving upon her fifth-place finish in 2025. Sixthgrader Lily Fry also had a personal best score of 277/300 and took the award for fourth place in the tournament.

The middle school team also went to Louisville, Ky., in May to compete in the NASP Eastern National Championship. Fellow high school archer Kaylee Zimmerman also attended, competing in her fifth national tournament with NASP. The team found success at the tournament by posting a qualifying 3D team score for the NASP Championship Tournament, which took place in Daytona Beach, Fla., in June. Danika and Kaylee posted individual qualifying scores. Kaylee Zimmerman was the only Catalyst archer who attended the championship tournament.

“This includes creating their own ‘Journey Journal’ with coloring, stickers, stamps, and they can even print out their own passport-style photo to include in it. There will also be a ‘Road Map Scavenger Hunt’ around the branch where kids can try to locate different USA landmarks and answer some trivia questions about those locations.”

Youths can also pick up a “Choose Your Own Adventure Trip to Yellowstone” booklet where they can make decisions and work through the basics

of balancing a budget for a fictional trip to Yellowstone National Park, she said, adding, “Our branches will also have a coloring contest, guessing game and more.”

Miller noted that the Youth Savings Celebration is meant to set kids on a path to making smart money decisions.

“Kids begin learning about money at a young age, often through media messages that don’t always reflect real-life financial decisions. We also know that many of the most important money lessons happen at home, and Everence can help support those conversations,” she explained. “Through Youth Savings Celebration, we provide families with fun, practical resources, tools and activities that encourage children to talk about

Bible Festival Posts Concerts

The Mount Gretna Bible Festival will host concerts on upcoming Sundays at 7 p.m. in the historic Mount Gretna Tabernacle, Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue, Mount Gretna. The venue is open-air, and a freewill offering will be received during each performance.

The Lancaster British Brass Band will perform on Aug. 2. The band consists of 28 instrumentalists from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.

The Jazz Ministers Big Band will be featured on Aug. 9. This group presents jazz numbers, standard Christian hymns, and gospel tunes.

On Aug. 16, the festival will host the Anthracite Marimba Ensemble. For over 20 years, this group has performed in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Its repertoire includes a wide variety of music, from the Baroque era to the modern era.

The Susquehanna Chorale will make its traditional late-summer appearance on Aug. 23. The event will be the final Chorale concert of the group’s founder and conductor, Linda L. Tedford.

The New Holland Band will present patriotic and spiritual music on Aug. 30. The band was formed in 1829.

A patriotic concert will be held on Sept. 6. It will feature pianist Michael Faircloth and the brass quintet Brassworks. This program is rescheduled from July 5, when Mount Gretna was without power for a few days.
