Recently, United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) installed and implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) system that makes life safer for its residents. Miranda Troyer has been UZRC’s director of personal care for six years. “It’s a radar-based system that requires no microphones and no cameras,” said Troyer. “It works on motion detection. It’s smart, so it learns our residents. It learns where their resting places are, so it’s known when they are moving. I’m not a tech person. But our results have been amazing.” In January, UZRC, which is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, became one of the first AI-powered

A weaver may lead a monthly river cleanup, or have started a board game club for seniors, or host a book club or lead a group of stay-at-home parents. There are so many ways you can build lasting relationships and weave our community together.” Through a national Weaver Awards program, LCCF is distributing 20 awards of $2,500 - a total of $50,000 - to people or small organizations that foster connections in Lancaster County. Individuals or nonprofits can apply for or nominate others for the awards at www.weavelancastercounty.org through Friday, July 24. Applicants must be 18 or older, serve or reside in Lancaster County, have a project that fosters relationships and be welcoming to any neighbor seeking to participate in the initiative. Everybody knows something about minerals and fossils. The upcoming show at the Farm and Home Center will provide the general public an opportunity to learn more about them and perhaps even pique their collective interest. “The best part of the show is that everyone can learn something new about fossils and minerals in a fun atmosphere,” said Christopher Haefner, the president of the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC), the sponsor of the show. “Fossils and minerals are important because they teach us a lot about the Earth’s history, they give us resources for industrial use and economic prosperity, and they have an everlasting beauty that can be enjoyed by current and future generations.” T he LCFMC ’s annual Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza is coming up at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. T he Rotar y C lubs of South Central Pennsylvania have welcomed Rebecca Zalit from the Rotary Club of Palmyra as the 2026-27 district governor of Rotary District 7390. The leadership transition took place during the district’s annual installation ceremony, where Zalit officially succeeded Mary Brunski of Carlisle as district governor for the new Rotary year, which began July 1. This year’s celebration was held at Palmyra Bowling and the Sinkhole Saloon & Grille. Aaron Jacobs of York and Elizabeth Wolfe of York were also installed in their roles as incoming district governors for the years 2027-28 and 2028-29. Dunn Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Michelle Dunn, a longtime leader with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has been honored with the Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of more than two decades of service to communities across the commonwealth. The award was presented on June 25 at the Harrisburg Hilton during the Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence ceremony, hosted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. Dunn joined Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful in 2004 as a program coordinator, traveling across Pennsylvania to help communities organize volunteer illegal dumpsite cleanups. Over the years, her role expanded along with her

It will notify us if someone is getting around at night, which is when most falls occur.” Since the Helpany AI system was installed, UZRC has seen a decrease in residents’ falls to literally nothing. In 2025, UZRC had recorded 76 resident falls. In April of this year, there were no UZRC resident falls recorded, the first time that has happened in the retirement community’s 121-year existence. “I do credit the system for that,” said Troyer. “It almost resembles a smoke alarm in a room. It connects to our Wi-Fi, and it has 24-hour support. We just all really love the simplicity. It’s very easy to understand, and it’s even easier for the caregivers. They can monitor residents through apps on their cell phones.” Currently, 27 residents, most of whom are Lancaster County natives, call UZRC home. “Some of the biggest fac to r s i n fa l l s a re a d e c re a s e i n o r i n te rrupted sleep, a decrease in activity and weaker mobility,” Troyer said. “Those are three of the biggest things that the system monitors. In the past, we’ve been more reac t ive when p e ople fell. It depends upon the severity of the fall, but

The residents have really responded well, and the system also has a portal where family members can see how their loved ones are doing through an app.” UZRC was founded in 1905 as United Zion Home for the Homeless. “We are always trying to look at the folks we serve and figure out how we can serve them better,” said Troyer. “We are a faithbased organization, and we get a lot of residents because of how faith-based we are. We’re always looking to grow and change. As time is changing, so is the tech and the things you can do.” “This has been one of the most innovative areas we ’ve ventured into,” concluded Troyer. “We’re being innovative and using these technologies to better the lives of the people we serve. UPMC Imaging Services at Lititz and Lancaster have been designated as Centers of Excellence (COEs) by GO2 for Lung Cancer for their commitment to provide the Lancaster community with patient-centered, evidence-based lung cancer screenings. COEs designated in lung cancer screening are committed to facilitating patient-centered communication and decision-making. COEs implement
screening that is in accordance with current evidence and clinical guidelines from organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) while using a multidisciplinary approach to coordinate follow-up care, diagnostics, and treatment. While the recognition highlights the imaging services in Lititz and Lancaster, UPMC has lung cancer screening COE
designation across the central Pennsylvania region. Lung cancer has been the long-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and most lung cancer diagnoses are made at the advanced stage of the disease. By providing individuals at high risk with screening that uses low-dose computed tomography, lung cancer can be found early when it is more treatable and potentially curable.

Paloma earned the Broadway Artists Alliance opportunity through a national application process that involved a personal essay, a headshot, audition videos of two songs, a monologue and a dance combination.
