Kyle Offers Big Help for Oliver

Everybody needs a role model. Everybody needs someone to bounce ideas off of. Everyone needs someone in their corner.
Little Brother Oliver has got Big Brother Kyle. It’s an evolving symbiotic relationship that is rooted in mutual respect, empathy and curiosity.
“I wanted to volunteer my time in some way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) seemed like a positive way to do so,” said Kyle. “As our relationship has grown, Oliver seems to respect me more and more and listen to what I have to say. He definitely seems to trust me more as he has become more comfortable. I’m trying to teach Oliver that things
won’t always go his way, and that’s OK.”
In March of 2024, Kyle and Oliver were matched by the Lancaster County branch of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA. Included in the match process was an in-depth enrollment process - an interview and staff assessment that identified factors that will support a lasting relationship.
Before meeting Oliver, Kyle underwent a background check and received training.
Oliver is a resident of Lititz.
“The first meet was at Oliver’s house with his mom and the match support specialist to introduce everyone involved,” said Kyle. “At the first meeting, Oliver was pretty quiet and shy, which

It is not enough to appreciate the contributions of volunteers. Nonprofit organizations must express that appreciation.
At its upcoming event, the Samaritan Center will validate the contributions its volunteers constantly and consistently make.
“Our volunteers are super important,” said Nancy Pleger,
the development officer for the Samaritan Center. “They are the ones who keep the place running. They give support to staff members and the executive team and allow us to do more. They use their connections to help us get in doors. Volunteers are the backbone. Without these dedicated volunteers, we’re just people offering services. We’re not a community lifting each other up.”
Navigating a Pet’s Final Journey

When a beloved pet is aging or nearing the end of its life, the emotional weight can feel overwhelming. That’s when Ashley Page steps in. As a certified endof-life pet doula, she offers compassionate, nonmedical support to both pets and their people, helping families navigate aging, terminal illness and difficult end-of-life decisions with care and dignity.
“My role is to help families feel supported emotionally, practically and compassionately,” she said. “That support can look very different depending on the family’s needs. Some people reach out because they need help understanding quality of life changes, while others are preparing for euthanasia, struggling with anticipatory grief or simply feeling overwhelmed caring for an aging pet.”
Based in York, Page is the owner of Willow Bridge Crossings. She provides in-home services throughout the county as well as in Lancaster County, and she offers virtual grief support services anywhere through phone calls, text support, FaceTime or Zoom.
“I can help families create comfort-focused routines at home, make environmental adjustments for senior pets, talk through end-of-life planning, provide euthanasia presence and support, assist with memorial ideas and aftercare guidance and offer grief support before and after a loss,” she said.
She knows what it’s like to lose a pet and to feel alone in her grief.

Evan’s Tragedy Brought Breathtaking Blessings

Among the greatest gifts of all is the gift of life. Evan Bunting gave the gift of life, multiple times in multiple ways.
Now, his spirit lives on in the lives of others.
“God had a plan I wasn’t aware of, and I didn’t like it,” said Ellen Smoll, Evan’s mom. “It was God’s plan, not mine. Maybe that was the thing He was planning. Now I always want to help people. But I’ve learned a lot about organ donations.
“It’s just so unnatural for your child to leave before you,” she added.
It’s been nearly 14 years since that tragic day, June 19, 2012, when Evan, a vibrant 2009 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, lost his young life in a tragic motorcycle accident. During the process of his passing, a parental decision was made to donate Evan’s organs to individuals in need of transplants and to science.
Those donations were made through Gift of Life, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that connects donors to transplant recipients.
“I got the call no mom ever wants to get,” said Ellen. “The hospital called and said my son had been rushed to the emergency room. My heart sunk. When I arrived at the hospital, I was told to hold on and the chaplain met me. They told me he had sustained damage to his head and he had internal bleeding. I saw him for a few seconds before they took him into the operating room. Then it was just waiting.”
The next day, Evan’s brain showed no signs of activity, and he was pronounced dead. It was at that point that Ellen was introduced to representatives of Gift of Life.
“They asked me if I would consider donating Evan’s organs, and I immediately said, ‚ÄòYes,’” said Ellen. “They kept him alive to take his gifts. I could hear the helicopters landing to take his organs. It was very emotional. I was in horrible grief, but it was a silver lining.”
Five days later, Ellen received a letter from Gift of Life. Evan’s heart went to a man in his 30s, his liver went to a woman in her 30s, one of his kidneys went to a man in his 50s and his other kidney and his pancreas went to a woman in her 30s. His lungs went to medical research, his skin went to breast cancer patients, one of his corneas went to a man in his 20s and his other cornea went to a woman in her 90s.
According to Gift of Life,
nearly 4,500 adults and children in the Philadelphia region are currently awaiting organ transplants, and an average of 13 people waiting for organ transplants die each day.
“It was probably 100 people he impacted,” said Ellen, a resident of East Earl Township. “I wanted his heart to be beating in someone else. He had beautiful eyes, and I wanted someone else to have them. I did get a letter from one of my son’s recipients and she’s doing great, and I met his liver recipient.
“It was a difficult time to make a decision,” Ellen continued. “But the people from Gift of Life were so kind. They know how to get somebody through that. I think God would want you to help everyone.”
During his high school days at Conestoga Valley, Evan was involved with the small engine program at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Willow Street campus.
“Evan was truly a blessing,” said Ellen. “He absolutely lived life to the fullest every day. He had an infectious smile every day. His smile said everything.”
Though details remain sketchy, it seems there were no other vehicles involved in Evan’s accident.
“We can’t figure it out,” said Ellen. “We have met with the police, and they tried to re-enact it, but we just don’t know. A lady saw him, stopped and held his hand.”
Five years after Evan gave the gift of life, Ellen followed his example. She donated one of her kidneys to a woman in Georgia.
“I really didn’t know much about organ donations. But it touched my life,” said Ellen. “Every day is a gift. Don’t take days with your family and friends lightly. If something like this occurs, do the great thing. You can’t take it when you leave.” For additional information, go to www.donors1 .org.
Church Posts VBS for Adults
Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will offer its first-ever vacation Bible school (VBS) for adults each Friday from July 17 through Aug. 7. Participants will gather from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year’s theme was inspired by Beatles songs, such as “All You Need Is Love.” Each week will include Bible-based devotions, a light lunch, lowkey games, and a craft.
Music may also be part of the program. All activities will take place in the church’s air-conditioned fellowship hall and are designed for adults age 50 and older.

Lancaster Nonprofit to Host First Fundraiser at Millersville VFW

Supporting Empowering Lives Foundation (SELF) is holding a bingo fundraiser at the Millersville VFW Post 7294 on Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The post, located at 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host the newly formed nonprofit’s first fundraising event.
SELF, formed last summer as the offshoot of another, now-defunct disabilities group, aims to help anyone with a disability live an independent life. According to the group’s website, its mission is “to serve clients with disabilities by identifying and addressing the gaps in support, resources and advocacy - picking the pieces so no one falls through the gaps.”
The event will consist of 10 normal bingo games, with the winner getting to pick a gift card prize. There will then be special games of bingo and a Chinese auction for some of the larger prizes, as well as a 50-50 drawing.
The prizes, all of which have been donated by local businesses and community members, include tickets to Hershey Gardens, the Reading Royals, Reading Fightin Phils, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Sight & Sound and more.
There will also be a food truck at the event, and des-
serts will be for sale.
“We are very excited,” said Jacki Nagle, the group’s chief executive officer. “We are very fortunate to have a community behind us ... we have the entire community coming together to support us.”
Nagle explained that while children with disabilities are in school, they are entitled to services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. But as soon as they graduate from high school, many families lose access to needed resources, depending on income.
That’s where SELF steps in.

that people with disabilities don’t fall through the cracks,” Nagle said. “They still need to receive the support and services that they’re eligible (for) and entitled to as humans.
“Disability is kind of a secondary thing to us,” she went on. “We just want to make sure that people with disabilities specifically are seen as integral parts of society.”
The group, physically located at 313 Liberty St., Suite 365, Lancaster, primarily serves those in Lancaster and Lebanon counties but will not turn down anybody who asks for help.
For the moment, SELF is offering services on a
purely volunteer basis, although its staff has combined decades of experience. Its fundraiser at the Millersville VFW is the first step toward offering more services.
“We are very dedicated to doing this work,” said Deborah Chapman-Stumpf, SELF’s director of programming. “I personally have been devastated that we’re not able to do it as well as we can because we don’t have the money to really put into it yet.”
“I hope this is going to launch us into what we really need,” she said.

Event to Focus on Revolutionary War
The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will commemorate its role as a Revolutionary War military hospital during a celebration on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will also commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The Historic Ephrata Cloister was the site of a Revolutionary War military hospital from December 1777 to June 1778. The hospital accommodated
260 soldiers, 60 of whom died and are buried on the grounds of the historic site. During this commemorative event, visitors may learn more about the military hospital and its impact on the pacifist members of the Ephrata Cloister.
Visitors may learn about 18th-century medicine, printing, camp life, and being a pacifist during wartime. They may visit the Witness Tree on the property as well as the monument honoring the soldiers in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will give a special performance at 4 p.m. in the Amphitheater, and seating will be available on
a first-come, first-served basis.
Some activities will require a wristband, which can be obtained upon paying admission. Wristbands are required for select performances and will operate on a first-come, first served-basis.
Among the programs requiring a wristband is the Lantern Tour Reprise, which will be held multiple times in the 1741 Meetinghouse, also known as the Saal. The tour will focus on the impact of the military hospital on the pacifist community.
“The Life of a Sister” will be held in the 1743 Sisters’ House, also called the Saron. Attendees will learn about the lifestyle of a
solitary Sister and how the Sisters aided the soldiers through herbal medicines and remedies. A wristband is required.
The event will take place rain or shine. On-site parking is available on a firstcome, first-served basis. There is an admission fee for people over age 2 who are not members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. Members and children age 2 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets will be sold on the day of the event, and no advance sales will be available.

Samaritan Center
The Samaritan Center’s appreciation will be on full display during its Community and Volunteer event on Sunday, June 28, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, the home of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club. On that day, the Stormers will take on the Gastonia Ghost Peppers at 1:30 p.m. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m.

The event is also designed to serve as organizational outreach to make the community aware of what the Samaritan Center is all about and
what it does.
“We wouldn’t be here without our volunteers,” said Pleger. “The Samaritan Center was established in 1988 as a mission of Highland Presbyterian Church, and it was started by volunteers.”
At the ballpark that afternoon, a selected volunteer will throw out the first pitch, and a Samaritan Center official will address the fans about the work that the nonprofit performs in the community. There will be promotions staged throughout the stadium, and the Samaritan Center will man an information table.
“We’re hoping it’s a fun, high-energy event,” said Pleger. “People can bring their families out and have a great time. The goal is to have a fun day, and so people can learn about
(the) Samaritan Center as well. We’re celebrating service and connecting our community.”
The Samaritan Center, which promotes mental health; provides related services; and operates locations at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, and at 33 N. Market St., Suite 400, Lancaster, is staffed by 50 employees, mainly therapists and administrative personnel.
But the nonprofit also benefits from 1,000 annual volunteer hours donated by more than 70 altruistic individuals. The majority of the volunteers reside in Lancaster County.
“They’re a group of individuals who really care about mental health in our community,” said Pleger. “They want to make sure services are affordable and

The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) has opened registration for the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League for the 2026-27 school year.
The league offers opportunities for people ages 8 to 21 with disabilities in Lancaster and surrounding cities to exercise while having fun. Along with teaching football and cheerleading fundamentals, the league gives play -
ers the opportunity to participate in a group activity where they can learn skills, interact socially with other individuals, and make new friends.
The program is also looking for volunteers to be Challenger Buddies to encourage players around the field and help with passing and catching. Games will take place every Saturday from Aug. 1 to Oct. 10. Volunteers over age 18 must complete
a criminal background check and child abuse clearance.

“We can play a lot of different roles, depending on where we are,” said Nick Heller, the Samaritan Center’s marketing manager. “We break down barriers for people needing mental health services. We are here to help.”
From January to May this year, the Samaritan Center has provided more than 8,000 counseling sessions to clients. In 2025, the Samaritan Center furnished more than 17,000 counseling sessions, 2,000 more than it did in 2024.
As part of its services, the organization also offers mental health screenings, educational series, therapeutic programs, consulting, church programs, ministry assessment and its TeenHope program for kids.

On average, Kyle and Oliver get together about twice a month. Their time spent together includes playing with Legos at Oliver’s house, going bowling, playing tennis and pickleball and attending after-school functions.
Kyle has also attended Scouting America meetings with Oliver and has helped him construct a pinewood derby car.
“Oliver is overall a very kind, caring 9-year-old,” said Kyle. “He has his moments, as any child does. He likes to learn and enjoys school and being with friends and his teacher.
“What I’ve learned from Oliver is how difficult it can be to be a young child without an adult male figure in their life,” continued Kyle. “I’ve always had two present parents and never experienced what he has. I have also learned how important the time I spend with him is to him. My childhood was very good; both parents were present and were both positive role models who definitely shaped me into the person I am today.”

“The 24 Hour Plays” Slated
Creative Works of Lancaster will present “The 24 Hour Plays” on Saturday, June 27, at 7 p.m. The event will be held at West Art, 816 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster.
Six writers, six directors, 25 actors and a production team will write, rehearse and perform six 10-minute plays in a 24-hour period. There will only be one performance of the plays.
The six plays will have undergone a process that starts on the evening of Friday, June 26. In this 24-hour period, six writers will choose their actors from a pool of talent, then write through the night and hand
their work to the directors early on June 27. After negotiating for their choice of play, directors will rehearse with their actors and a crew of stage technicians to prepare for a 7 p.m. curtain and debut performances of the plays. Creative Works utilizes a “pay what you decide” ticketing model with no fixed ticket prices. Potential audience members are never turned away due to financial limitations. people didn’t fully understand,” she recalled. “There’s often this unspoken belief that losing a pet should somehow hurt less, but for many of us, these animals are family, companions and emotional anchors. I realized there were other people carrying that same grief while feeling unseen and unsupported, and I wanted to create a space where they didn’t have to go through it alone.”
With a background that includes more than 13 years of working professionally with animals through her business Allegiant Dog Walking, Page has also worked in veterinary offices, served as an animal control officer, worked as a professional dog trainer and is a certified pet CPR and First Aid instructor.
“I am also navigating life with my 16-year-old dachshund, Sullivan, who has dementia,” she said.
“Caring for him has shown me firsthand how much support aging pets - and their people - truly need. From medication routines and environmental adjustments to the emotional weight of anticipatory grief, there are so many layers families are trying to manage.”
These experiences ultimately led Page to become a certified end-of-life pet doula and create Willow
Bridge Crossings in 2025.
“My background has given me experience not only in animal behavior and care, but also in supporting people through stressful and emotional situations involving their pets,” she said. “Becoming an end-of-life pet doula felt like a natural extension of the work I’ve already spent much of my life doing - caring for both animals and the humans who love them.”
Each client’s experience is different, she said, but all start with a free phone consultation to find the best support for each situation.
“Some people are looking for guidance with an aging pet, while others may need emotional support surrounding a recent diagnosis or upcoming euthanasia,” Page said. “From there, we discuss what services would feel most helpful and supportive for them.”
Page hopes her services will shine a light on the emotions that come with loving and losing a pet.
“I think one of the most important things I want people to understand is that grief over an animal is real and valid,” she said. “These relationships are incredibly deep, and the loss of a pet can impact someone just as profoundly as the loss of any beloved family member.”
She also wants to convey
the message that providing pet doula services is about more than navigating a pet’s death.
“End-of-life support is not just about the final day,” she said. “In many cases, support begins much earlier - during the aging process, after a difficult diagnosis or when families begin noticing changes in their pet and feeling uncertain about what comes next.”

Play Ball for a Purpose

“The Manheim Church Softball League has been in existence since 1953, one of the longest continuously running softball leagues in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Mike Givler, president of the league. “Next year the league will celebrate its 75th season. It is a proud community of softball teams and players that brings hundreds of fans from around the county to Manheim every summer.”
The league will hold a Rivalry Night at Pool Field, located on East Adele Avenue across from Manheim Central High School, on Monday, June 29.
Teams from five churches in the leagues, each with two teams, will compete in the event, which is a fundraiser for renovation of the field’s bleachers as well as two Manheim missions.
Participating churches are Erb Mennonite, Chiques Church, Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC), Newport Dove and White Oak.
Four games will be played at Pool Field, with the fifth taking place at Mummau Park, 446-498 Chestnut St., Manheim. Food trucks will operate from 6 to 9 p.m., and the games will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Sales of food will be by donation, with proceeds first going to a plan to upgrade the bleachers, and the remaining funds split between Teen Central and Home on Ferdinand, missions that have been recipients of the league’s past fundraising.
“Both organizations have received thousands of dollars from the league in the last five years because of benefit days similar to this one,” Givler shared. “Both of those Manheim organizations will be on hand with materials to hand out about their missions. …We are proud to give back to these meaningful
outreaches in Manheim.”
Food trucks will include Ryno BBQ, Blazin’ J’s, Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels and 32 Below Ice Cream.
“Games will likely run until about 10:30,” said Givler, who plays as a pickup player for Manheim BIC Orange as a utility infielder. “Each game lasts roughly one hour.”
The Rivalry Night is part of the league’s regular schedule, he noted.
“Bragging rights are on the line,” Givler said.
He explained that food is available by donation thanks to generous donors who pay for the food trucks in advance.
“We have already received a commitment from the Manheim Farm Show to help with the costs of the bleachers since the farm show also uses the bleachers heavily during their week of events in October and would benefit from improved bleachers,” he added.
Givler attributes the softball league’s longevity to several factors.
“We have a great group of coaches and players who love the game of softball and enjoy the fellowship with the other players and teams,” he said. “We have a competitive brand of softball that brings out fans from around the county to enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on their favorite teams.”
Everyone is welcome for Rivalry Night, and spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to ensure enough seats. The event will be held rain or shine.
“It’s a great community atmosphere. There will be great food on June 29, and you’ll get to see people who you might not run into except at the farm show,” Givler said. “The games should be competitive as well, so we’re expecting a fun and entertaining evening under the lights.”
