Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, wants area residents to know that Taste of Lititz will be back this year with an expanded program for area adults and youngsters to enjoy. “We have a lot more entertainment this year, and we have a lot more games and activities,” said DeKarske of the familyfriendly event. This year’s Taste of Lititz will feature up to 30 restaurants, cafes, and other eateries from within the 17543 ZIP code offering samples of a variety of tasty fare for purchase on Friday, June 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. In addition, demonstrations by local artisans, live music, and a silent auction featuring original artwork will be part of the event, which will close Main Street from Broad Street to Water and Cedar streets.
Among the array of foods that will be available in sample-size portions will be kettle corn, tomato pie, poppers, tostados, crab pretzel sliders, pizza, and barbecue sandwiches. Beverage items will include iced coffee and tea, a variety of flavored waters, and more. Among the dessert items will be cupcakes; a chocolate, caramel, and pretzel combination known as Lititz Bark; and ice cream. DeKarske noted that the samples provided for purchase should whet attendees’ appetites for more so that they consider visiting the restaurants of origin. Organizers have invited a number of musical guests to perform at the event. The Warwick High School jazz band will return, and the Lititz Community Band will play. Taste of Lititz will feature plenty of food, live music, artwork, and games when it is held on Friday, June 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Lititz. The event will close Main Street from Broad Street to Water and Cedar streets. Olsen’s Band, which plays a mix of rock, will both perform. “The Hooley dancers will be here doing Irish step dance,” noted DeKarske. A silent auction, including artwork donated by local artists, will be held in front of the Lititz Post Office, located at 74 E. Main St. This year, in

According to Kate Lowry, a member of the Junior League of Lancaster, the organization has been looking for more ways to make a positive impact on the local community. “ We did a community impact assessment about five years ago,” explained Lowry. “We looked at challenges and issues, and we did an assessment of what the community needs and where the gaps are.” One result of that assessment is the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project. Summer Programs from pg 1 Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, will host programs and camps this summer. Children from all communities are welcome to participate. The camp season will kick off on Monday, June 17, and wrap up in mid-August.
Day camps for children and youths in preschool through high school will be scheduled as one-day to five-day programs. A variety of camp themes have been developed by camp directors, including sports, art, dance, fitness, science, Legos, rockets, diggers, and
princesses. Many of the five-day camps will end with an optional visit to Lititz Springs Pool. For indoor adventure, recROC, located on the Rock Lititz campus, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, will host four weeks of bouldering, obstacle, and fitness camps for youths age 8 and up. New this year will be a partnership with Take Heart Counseling’s Equine Therapy program in Denver. Local teenagers in middle school and high school can spend a day with horses, learning about and experiencing therapeutic riding. Older teenagers seeking to develop leadership skills are invited to join the summer camp staff at Lititz recCenter as junior counselors to shadow and assist seasonal camp counselors. This year, representatives of local churches, including church youth groups, have joined that number. “There will be a ring toss, a giant Jenga game, and tabletop board games for people to play,” said DeKarske, who added that a few original games will be in the mix and a balloon animal artist will be on-site. The Warwick High School bowling team will give attendees a chance to bowl on Cedar Street. The Young Men’s Business Club will host a game, and the group will also hold a water ball race. “(The organization) is raising money for

Irish Dance Showcase Planned The Hooley School of Irish Dance will hold its annual showcase in the auditorium at Warwick High School, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Saturday, June 1, at 4 p.m. In celebration of the dance school’s 10th anniversary, this year’s show is titled “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” It will include traditional and original choreographies. For 2019, this auction will focus on experiences, such as courtside tickets to Philadelphia Sixers games, 10yard-line tickets to an Eagles game, and Josh Groban concert tickets. A push mower and a brand-name grill will also be auctioned. At 2:15 p.m., class projects will be auctioned. Classes have donated a mini cornhole set, an outdoor chess game, and a Lego table. LAMS currently serves students from prekindergarten through 10th grade. The school’s mission is to partner with Christian families to provide a safe and nurturing environment that encourages personal freedom and individual expression. LAMS is accredited by the Commission on Elementary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and the MidAtlantic Christian Schools Association. Burkholder said that the school hopes to raise $140,000 at this year’s auction. The chicken barbecue will continue until 1:30 p.m. or until the chicken is sold out. Warwick’s volleyball season came to an abrupt end last week as the hopeful Warriors dropped back-toback matches in the PIAA District Three Class 3A championship. After triumphing over long time rival Hempfield in a one match playoff to win the Section One title, Warwick fell to the Knights in the L-L League championship and entered Districts looking to wipe the slate clean on its quest for a District crown and a trip to the PIAA tournament. Fate had different plans, however, as the Warriors dropped a 3-2 decision to State College in the quarterfinals and landed in the consolation bracket. Once there, Warwick faced Exeter Township and again felt the frustration of defeat in a 3-0 sweep, only this time the result was final. Warwick came into the tournament as the number three seed and,
after downing Penn Manor 3-1 in the opening round, faced off with the sixth seeded Little Lions of State College. With Chad Meeder recording 19 kills at the net, the Warriors traded sets with State College as they lost the first one 25-22 before tying things up with a 26-24 win in the second. The Little Lions roared back in the third with a 25-21 win but Warwick answered, taking the fourth set 25-17 to force a fifth and deciding set. In that final game, State College proved too much for the Warriors who succumbed in a 15-10 defeat. Along with Meeder, Noah Miller tallied 18 digs while both Foster Lobb and Kameron Brenneman blocked three each. In the consolation match versus Exeter Township, the Warriors battled the seventh seeded Eagles but lost three gut wrenching games by scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-22. Meeder and Miller both recorded 13 kills while Lobb had 10 digs for Warwick.

Lancaster Science Factory. Aquaponics utilizes an aquarium tank with types of vegetable and herb plants suspended over the water. Fish in the aquarium produce waste, which feeds the plants growing hydroponically above. According to Nicole Keifer, the systems offer several benefits that appealed to league members. “We saw these systems, and (we) thought they were a hands-on and exciting way to get an aquaponics system into a classroom,” said Keifer, who noted that the units are compact and cost-effective. “(Students) can learn about ecosystems, and they can learn about the fish life cycle and symbiotic relationships,” she noted, adding that nutrition and alternative methods of farming can also be discussed. “You can get into so many conversations and thought processes (with students) based on this one little system,” she said. Impressed with the aquaponics systems
the league had seen, league member Pam Lazos contacted Mike Simpson, director of The Stone Independent School, in the summer of 2018. Simpson was interested, and he put Lazos in contact with Darby Schock, who teaches math and science at Stone. League members worked with Fritz and the Science Factory on a similar time table. In January 2019, the aquaponics tanks arrived. At Stone, freshman and sophomore students assembled the tanks and prepared the clay media and peat plugs before adding arugula, rainbow Swiss chard, and dill. Kristen, a student at The Stone Independent School, said that the class members working on the project feed the fish, test the water, and check on the plants. Water is tested for pH range, temperature, and contamination. Schock noted that the project lends itself to a variety of lessons. “We can teach photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle in the water, aquaculture, raising fish, (and) the environ-
ment the fish like,” he said. “There are chemistry elements to (testing the water).” At the Lancaster Science Factory, director Emily Landis noted that the tank was set up to cycle for about six weeks before seven active fish were added. “The most important thing about setting up is establishing the right balance,” said Landis. Lazos noted that the cycling creates a colony of beneficial bacteria. “The fish waste creates ammonia that is pumped up to the top and converted into nutrients the plant can intake. Nitrites are converted to nitrate to feed the plants.” At the top, rosemary, parsley, and tiny tomato plants are growing. Landis said that the 50,000 to 60,000 yearly Science Factory visitors will have the opportunity to read signage that explains the cycle and all the chemistry behind it. “Our STEM educator, Angel Kilyan, is a chemist, so she would like to integrate the aquaponics in the ecology and chemistry programming,” said Landis.

Students and volunteers at Manheim Performing Arts Community Theatre (MPACT) have been hard at work preparing to bring the wonderful, whimsical world of “James and the Giant Peach Jr.� to life. Based on Roald Dahl’s quirky novel, the junior musical follows James as he is sent by his aunts to chop down an old fruit tree and discovers a magic potion that grows a larger-than-life size peach, kicking off a wild journey. Performances of “James and the Giant Peach Jr.� are set for 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 30 and 31, as well as at 2 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Manheim Central Middle School (MCMS), 261 White Oak Road, Manheim. Tickets for general admission will be available for a nominal fee at the door.
