Pool Opening

When the facility opens on Saturday, May 23, Lititz Springs Pool will mark its 65th season of serving local communities.

Beginning on Monday, June 8, the pool will be open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., weather permitting, throughout the summer. The swim season at Lititz Springs Pool will conclude during the first week of September, with the popular adult splash event and then the season-ending dog swim day.

“Just getting out and getting fresh air is important,” said Pickel. “Just sitting on a towel and taking in some vitamin D. The pool provides great activities to get kids out. Learning to swim is an important skill to learn; it keeps kids safe.”

In 1961, community advocates put their heads together, reached the conclusion that the locale needed a pool and then followed through with their idea. The $20,000 those leaders raised helped fund the construction of the pool, and in 1962, Lititz Springs Pool was opened to the community.

“I think stories like this bring out a little nostalgia,” said Pickel, a resident of Brickerville. “I’ve gone there for as long as I can remember. Years later, I’m taking my kids, and

they love it. Hopefully, someday my grandkids will experience it. It’s family friendly. People trust that it will always be there.”

Lititz recCenter took over operations of Lititz Springs Pool in 2014. Five years later, the property, which features a 400,000-gallon main pool, a 70,000-gallon adult/ lap pool and a 4,000-gallon baby pool, was spruced up through a $4.5 million renovation project.

“We’re really proud of the 65 years the pool has been in the community and serving it well,” said Pickel. “We’ve been able to improve the grounds. We want to keep it as a priority for the community for years to come.”

In addition to the three separate pools, the Lititz Springs Pool facility offers a massive splash pad, a 50-gallon dump bucket, a water gun area, 24 20-foot shade umbrellas, slides, diving boards, lily pads, picnic tables and plenty of grassy area. The pool does not include a concession stand, but patrons are welcome to order food and have it delivered to the front desk.

Lititz Springs Pool also hosts aquatic fitness classes, swim lessons and the Lititz Springs Wave Runners community swim team, which provides competition opportunities for students between the ages of 5 and 18.

“It’s a beautiful property,” said Pickel. “Even when we’re closed,

it’s amazing how many people stop, look in through the fence, take pictures and admire it. It’s just another extension of Lititz. It’s a beautiful community, a beautiful town.”

In 2025, Lititz Springs Pool sold 903 season passes, 530 of which were family season passes. During the season, the pool also entertained a total of 10,724 guests - individuals from Lititz, Warwick Township and surrounding communities.

“You can come in as a family, and you can make a whole day of it,” said Pickel. “People set up under an umbrella and relax. It’s people just looking to have a nice day, looking to enjoy the sun and cool water and escape from the day-to-day grind. It’s about fresh air and relaxing.”

Lititz Springs Pool employs nearly 50 seasonal workers, managers, lifeguards, front desk personnel and facility monitors.

“We’re a nonprofit, and our mission is to enrich the lives of the community by providing programs and facilities that promote the participation of individuals, families and groups from all backgrounds,” said Pickel. “We want to be very inclusive. The pool is a perfect extension of the Lititz recCenter, where everyone is invited.”

Ephrata Cloister Posts Special Tours

The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will offer Upper Floor Tours on Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. and noon.

All participants must sign a waiver prior to the start of the tour.

The deadline to apply for this year’s edition of the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation scholarship is quickly approaching. Scholarship applications, which can be accessed at www.amesconstructioninc .com/giving-back, must be received by Friday, June 1.

The scholarships are designed for seniors from Ephrata, Cocalico, Warwick and Garden Spot high schools who are interested in the construction or building field or the automotive industry, and who will be attending a postsecondary institution in the fall of 2026. Included in the application is an essay portion.

A graduate of Ephrata High School who was raised in Akron, Royer was a project manager at Ames Construction for 27 years before his sudden passing in October of 2016.

“We’ve had a wide variety of recipients,” said Bender. “In the first year, an Ephrata student Randy had coached in youth soccer received it. Last year, one of the students who received it was going overseas to go to school. We ask the applicants what made them passionate to go into the field.”

After applications are received, they are reviewed to ensure requirements have been met. Then the members of the Randy

Royer Memorial Foundation board meet and apply a rubrics system to determine the recipients of onetime scholarships between $1,000 and $5,000.

Last year, the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation awarded eight scholarships to local high school seniors.

“A $5,000 scholarship for a school like Thaddeus Stevens is a good amount,” said Bender, a resident of Ephrata.

The scholarship is funded through the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation’s annual golf outing, titled “Living the Dream.” This year, the fundraising event will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall.

“We want to give away money,” said Bender. “We do very well when we do our golf tournament because we have very generous donors. We want people to know about the scholarships.”

The Randy Royer Memorial Foundation and its scholarship were established not long after Royer’s passing. Over the last nine years, the foundation has awarded a total of $93,000 in scholarships to more than 21 local students.

The board that oversees the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation is made up of some of Royer’s family members and friends.

“I think it’s going very well,” said Bender.

Blessings of Hope Plans Fundraiser

Blessings of Hope, a local nonprofit working to address food insecurity, will host the annual iCare Community Event from Thursday to Saturday, May 28 to 30, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The event raises funds for the ongoing efforts of Blessings of Hope and provides a platform for supporters to learn more about what the organization does. Blessings of Hope distributes more than 35 million meals annually through partnerships with ministries and food outreach programs.

The iCare Community Event will begin with a dinner on May 28. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and an Amish wedding meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. in homage to the Amish roots of Blessings of Hope’s co-founders.

Andrew Mukuba of the Philadelphia Eagles will be the keynote speaker, and a limited number of VIP tickets are available, offering access to a special meet-and-greet experience

with Mukuba.

On Friday, May 29, food will be available from 5 to 8:30 p.m., including soft pretzels and smoked pulled beef. Daniel and Emma Lynn Glick and the Daughters of Hope will present a gospel concert at 6:30 p.m.

On May 30, food will be available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a 5K race will start at 7:30 a.m., with registration at 6:30 a.m. Bounce houses and barrel train rides will be available free of charge from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festivities will also include an auction, beginning at 9 a.m. Attendees may bid on donated items, including restaurant gift cards, birdhouses, an e-bike, an end table, a shed, children’s toys, plants, bicycles, and passes to experiences. At noon, a donated 2025 Ram 2500 plow truck will be auctioned off.
