Taekwondo Can Blaze Path to Self-Actualization BY JEFF FALK

t is not a discipline; it’s a martial art. It is not a physical activity; it’s the exploration of a culture. It is not simply a sport, selfdefense training, a form of self-care or a development facilitator; it’s Taekwondo. Kirk Wolfe is not an instructor; he’s a master. “Taekwondo is a Korean term for hands, feet and the way,” said Wolfe. “It’s a way to use your hands and feet for combat and to defend yourself. People who come are going to learn the language. They’re going to learn Korean and a little bit of the culture too.” Wolfe, a part-time officer with the Strasburg Police Department and a member of the Warwick School District’s board of education, is heading one of the Lititz recCenter ’s newest programs, Taekwondo. at the Lititz recCenter, 301 Maple St., every Monday and Wednesday night - from 6:15 to 7:05 p.m. for junior warriors between the ages of 5 and 9 and from 7:15 to 8:05 p.m. for master warriors from age 10 through adults. There are costs involved with taking the classes. “We’re going to learn the art of Taekwondo as taught by teachers and how it was handed down,” said Wolfe. “We’ll learn discipline, especially for children. It helps children have a disciplined life and teaches them how to deal with stressful situations. It’s about being able to defend yourself as well. They’re important skills to have if you ever need them. If you practice Taekwondo enough, when something happens it just comes out naturally.” As a way of introducing the new Taekowndo classes to the community, the Lititz recCenter is hosting a free open house from 6:15 to 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27. ark Mueller and his wife, Jackie, took a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and turned it into an opportunity to help others. Jackie was diagnosed with MS in 1998, and the couple sought to treat the disease as naturally as possible, without medication. They experimented with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t, and their research led to MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 15, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St. “Each participant selects a time with their trainer for their private one-hour weekly session,” Mark
A World of Wonder Awaits Inside the Bookmobile
BY JEFF FALK
It’s more than books on wheels. The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul. “Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to

be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.” W h e n n o t o n t h e g o to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. Pounding Pavement for Clinic for Special Children BY JEFF FALK
Runners are self-motivated athletes. When they run and enter into their competitive zones, runners report feelings of exhilaration and jubilation. They are feelings that can only be expanded by running for others, feelings that will be felt during the Clinic for Special Children’s upcoming 5K. “It’s people intent on running,” said Renny Magill, the director of development for the Clinic for Special Children. “But there’s also almost a sense of a family reunion. Some are people running in support of a family member. They’re people who are interested in supporting the mission.” “Obviously, we have some serious runners,” said Kelly Cullen, the marketing and communications manager for the Clinic for Special Children. “But when I think of the atmosphere of the event, I think of family. We’re a very family-friendly event. It may be families we serve. We’re welcoming a variety of physical abilities, and people really rally around our families.” The Clinic for Special Children’s 8th annual 5K run is a community event, a fundraiser, and an outreach activity for the local nonprofit. This year’s 5K run will be staged at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. Runners can register for the 5K at www.clinicforspecial children.org prior to the race
