Festival and 5K are about vehicles, planes, running and helping youths BY JEFF FALK
The annual Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K was established in 2017 to benefit Lancaster city youths. Since then, the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s fundraiser has really “gotten rolling”; it’s really “taken off.” “It’s really a fun, family day,” said Amy Lewis, who’s been a member of the Rotar y of Lancaster’s board of directors for two years. “We encourage families to come. There’s music
that gives it a classic car vibe. It’s a chance to explore Lancaster Airport in a way you don’t usually get, support the Rotary and support this amazing cause.” The Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is part car show, part running competition and part airplane show. The sixth edition of the event will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz. The day will begin at 8 a.m. with the running of the 5K See Wheels and Wings pg 5

ope comes in many different sizes, in many different shapes and in many different forms. Hope comes from various origins, various places and various sources. Yes, there is hope for Haiti. It’s alive and well in Ephrata. “Haiti has been in the news, and it’s almost always negative,” said Kristen Hertzog, who’s visited Haiti 79 times over the last 30 years, many of which have been as missions of mercy. “It seems like there is constantly drama there. I’ve been asked, ‘Why do you keep going back for more?’ I think the reality is that when you’re on the ground and meet
the people down there, it gives it a different dimension.” Hertzog is also a board member for the Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction and a liaison between the fundraiser and the people of
“We’re giving people we don’t know hope for a better life.” Haiti. This year’s edition of the annual benefit auction will be conducted on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. until everything is sold, at the one-room Metzler School, 535 Metzler Road, Ephrata. Admission to the Hope for
Haiti Benefit Auction is free. “It’s a typical country auction,” said Hertzog. “But every year it’s different, which is why people should come again. Our auction is unique because everyone is invited to volunteer and participate. You can come casually, or you can come to buy something.” Some of the items that will be made available for bids at the auction include collectibles, tools, sheds, furniture, gift cards, quilts, antiques, flowers, plants, outdoor items and locally made craft goods. There will also be a large food court offering homemade dishes; a children’s tent featuring games, activities and prizes; a Spikeball tournament; and a bake sale.
Wheels will turn wishes into reality BY CAT SHANNON
For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest
from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m. In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation from drivers and wish families. “Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-A-Wish director of development for Lancaster County.
