26th Friendship Fest And Third 5K Run Planned By Ann Mead Ash
According to Friendship Community volunteer coordinator Phil Horning, the atmosphere at the organization’s annual Friendship Fest, Auction, and 5K Run is … well, festive. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Horning. “It attracts children and families, and the individuals we support love coming (to the event).” Laurel Spagnolo, director of advancement with Friendship, added that organizers enjoy seeing residents from nearby Landis Homes visiting the fest. Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day
will open with a cafeteria-style pancake and sausage breakfast and a plant sale. Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendshipcommunity.net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available. Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will offer a taste of summer at its annual Strawberry and Waffle Breakfast on Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 10 a.m.

The event will offer attendees unlimited homemade waffles and fresh strawberries from the Carolinas. “It isn’t quite strawberry season here in Pennsylvania,” noted organizer Gail Ruhl. “However, we often have people tell us that it is so great to have a taste of what is to come.” In addition to the strawberries and waffles, attendees may enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, homefries, and a variety of breakfast casseroles. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children, and children age 3 and under may eat for free.
According to Ruhl, the event utilizes approximately 80 pounds of strawberries. “We usually go through all 80 pounds,” Ruhl noted, adding that folks are welcome to take home a portion for a set price, as well. The event is the final fundraiser for the church’s Mission Outreach Team, which will be heading to Clendenin, W.Va., in June. The group’s previous fundraiser, a chicken potpie dinner, was a huge success, according to organizers, and they are hopeful that the strawberry and waffle breakfast will

help to finalize the financial portion of the trip. The Mission Outreach Team is a multigenerational group with older members as well as members in their teens. The group has served together in various capacities for approximately 10 years. The Clendenin trip will allow the group to help with flooding damage that continues to affect the area. Catastrophic flooding affected the impoverished Appalachian region in June 2016, and many families were displaced. According to Ruhl, not only can funding and help take a while to get to the areas in need, but after a time, aid decreases even though the need is still present. The Mission Outreach Team hopes to help with the continuing reconstruction of the area. “It is surprising that it takes so long to rebuild,” Ruhl shared. “The funds dry up but there are many people who are still in need of assistance, and we hope to be of help in any way we can.” For details on the breakfast fundraiser or the Mission Outreach Team, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717665-3400.

Two Communities to serve you.
Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) School recently hosted community leaders and civil servants at a recognition ceremony. Invited guests included veterans, current members of the armed forces, elected officials, and first responders, including firefighters and police officers. Guests joined for the weekly school liturgy, followed by a recognition ceremony and blessing of the guests by the Rev. John McLoughlin. Each year, a member of the local community is recognized during the ceremony for his or her dedication to public service. This year, the school honored Army Brig. Gen. Mark McCormack. McCormack has served in the military for more than 30 years, having received his ROTC Commission in 1988 at Mansfield. His service and duties include U.S. Army - Pennsylvania Army National Guard and Deputy Commanding General - Support (DCG-S) 28 ID. In 1997, he served in Operation Joint Guard - Germany Bosnia. From 2007 to 2008 he was assigned to Operation Iraqi Freedom - Balad Iraq. In 2018, he served in Operation Spartan Shield - Kuwait. McCormack is a member of the VFW and has volunteered with the Cocalico Youth Sports organization. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole. OMPH School welcomes children from local Catholic churches, as well as interested members of the general community. Derr Earns Basketball Honors Rylee Derr of Lititz was one of two Kutztown University women’s basketball players to be voted to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams. Derr, a sophomore, earned First Team honors. It was the second straight season Derr made All-PSAC after being on the Second Team last year.
Derr, who holds the school record for three-pointers in a game (nine), ranks 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 17.1 points per game. She is also second in three-pointers made (85), sixth in free-throw percentage (80.4) and 15th in rebounding (6.8). She has started all 29 games this season and all 30 last year, never missing a

Before that, he was a partner at The Roykam Group in New Paltz, N.Y., working in the areas of real estate investment, development, and brokerage. In his role with Landis Communities, Kaminski will lead the exploration, development and operations of market rate and
affordable living opportunities for individuals age 55 and older. Kaminski and his wife, Kris, live in Lancaster and are parents of two adult children. She said that purses, household items, quilts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and tickets to local attractions and sports competitions are among the many items organizers plan to have available for bidders. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The gallery showcases work through which individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves artistically. Friendship’s Meaningful Day Academy program, which offers Friendship clients an opportunity to contribute to the community, will also have a tent at the fest. Both tents will be
open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities for children, which will include a bounce house and face painting by Rebekah Violante of Joyful Canvas, will begin at 10 a.m. A petting zoo and the magic of Papa Tater will both be on-site. A food court will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature chicken barbecue meals including a half-chicken, a roll, chips, applesauce, and a beverage. Other food items will include chicken corn soup, hot dogs, french fries, and ice cream. As part of the fest, Friendship began offering a fund-a-need program a few years ago. Tyler Velkly, 14, received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor ceremony held on March 23 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lititz. Tyler joined Scouting as a Tiger Cub with Cub Scout Pack 100, earning his Arrow of Light award in 2015. Since joining Troop 100, Velkly earned 21 merit badges and served as librarian, quartermaster, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, and senior patrol leader. For his Eagle Scout service project, Velkly re-landscaped the courtyard at Mount Calvary Church. His project involved the supervision of 10 volunteers and required 70 work hours. On Thursday, May 16, the Lititz Farmers Market, which moved to Lititz Springs Park last year, will open for the 2019 season. As in 2018, the market will be situated just inside the park gates at 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, along the water near the visitors’ center, but on the same side as the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. This year, the market will be open each Thursday from 4:30 until 8 p.m. from mid-May through Oct. 17. The market will be open rain or shine.
St. Luke’s UCC Plans Music Sunday St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, will celebrate Music Sunday on Sunday, May 5, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Homecoming Choir and The New Century Singers will sing, including a hymn penned by the adult Sunday school class and a hymn featuring text written by their minister, the Rev. James Haun, and music composed by their music minister, Karen Umberger. The handbell choir will perform, as will the brass ensemble. St. Luke’s will also honor Umberger, who is celebrating 30 years of service to the church. A light lunch will follow, and all are invited to attend.

still looking for a market master to take care of weekly needs. In addition to a market master, DeKarske would like to see more volunteers join in at the market each week. “We could use … people who want to talk about Lititz and the market and just be friendly,” she said, noting that people who love Lititz would be welcome to represent Venture Lititz at its booth. In partnership with the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County, the library reminds the community that it has a telescope for loan to the public. The warmer months are an ideal time to check out the telescope and enjoy the night sky. The telescope is an Orion Star Blast 4.5-inch astronomical telescope, along with a zoom eye piece and supportive material. The telescope has a wooden base rather than tripod legs. It is of manageable size, but has a relatively large optical tube, meaning that the moon and deep sky objects will show more detail
than one could see with a standard beginner’s telescope. It also has a large field of view that allows objects to stay in the in the eyepiece longer. Patrons age 18 and older may borrow the telescope kit for a one-week period using their library card. Against Penn Manor, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter, but again were outmatched as the Comets scored seven times while Warwick netted three for a 7-4 score heading into halftime. The Warriors came out firing in the third, putting up three goals to Penn Manor’s one, cutting the lead to 8-7, but couldn’t find the one goal it needed

The ladies set yet another record when they first qualified on Thursday with a time of 47.78, the best ever in the L-L League, and yet again on Friday when they won gold with a 47.25 which also broke their own Warwick High School record. That effort won the girls a Penn Relay mini wheel award as well. Graybill and Quinn also took part in Friday’s Cy Fritz Open at Millersville where they finished first and second, respectively with times of 24.63, and 25.02. Delmotte also won first place in the triple jump in Millersville with a distance of 36-5.75. Also taking part in the Penn Relays was the boys’ team of Jeremy Bell, Noah Martin, Smith, and Shields who finished third in heat three of the 4x800 in 7:58, as well as Dickow who finished seventh with a time of 9:41.91. SOFTBALL With only one league loss on record, Warwick (11-1) is continuing its race to the playoffs while Hempfield (9-3, 11-3) is also staying in the hunt. The lady Warriors completed last week with a 6-0 defeat of Conestoga Valley last Monday and a 5-1 win over Manheim Township on Wednesday. Warwick, behind a combined four hit shutout by pitchers Marissa Treibley and Katelyn Minney, scattered eight hits to secure the victory over the Buckskins despite committing two fielding errors on the day. The ladies took an early lead when Emily Beale (2-3), after singling to start the first inning, stole both second and third and then scored on a fly out by Catie Brubaker (0-3, RBI). Treibley (1-3, 2RBI) added another two in the third scoring both Beale, who walked and then stole another two bases, and Brubaker on a line drive single into center field to make it 3-0. RBI singles by Danielle Jones (3-4, 2RBI) in the fifth, and seventh innings provided Warwick with two more insurance runs for the final score of 6-0 Spotting Manheim Township a run in the top of the first inning due to an error, Warwick settled in behind starting pitcher Minney who didn’t surrender another run on the way to earning the win. She threw a complete game while only giving up three hits and striking out 10 of the 25 batters she faced. A four-run third inning sparked by a two-out single by Jones (1-3, 2RBI) with the bases loaded gave Warwick all the cushion it needed to pull out the win. Treibley (2-3, 3RBI) followed with a single that scored both Brubaker (1-2) and Jones to make it 5-1 before driving in yet another run in the fifth on a base hit into left field for the final score of 6-1. LACROSSE Warwick’s girls only played one game last week and picked up another win, an 18-4 triumph over Ephrata. With the victory, Warwick improved to 4-5, 4-6 on the season.

Beky Weidner An art reception at Crossings Art Gallery at Landis Homes on Thursday, May 9, will feature the most recent works of Lancaster artist Beky Weidner. This exhibit, titled “Weathered,” consists of watercolor paintings completed in the past couple of years. It features images from nature, many of which are from within a few miles of Weidner’s home, along with some old architecture. Weidner attended Bethel College in Kansas, where she studied art and received her teaching certification. She taught a range of art courses at Lancaster Mennonite School for 10 years, followed by time working at Ten Thousand Villages as a designer in the visual merchandising department. Weidner currently teaches ceramics and sculpture to high school students at Lancaster Country Day School. She maintains a home studio where she experiments with printmaking, stained glass and watercolor painting. Though she and her husband, Larry Penner, are native Midwesterners, they have lived in Lancaster for more than 20 years and have two teenage children, Zach and Alison. The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 9 in the Crossings Art Gallery. Larry will provide live piano and guitar music. Broad St., Lititz. The festival will also feature themed basket giveaways, a silent auction, and more. The church offers space for up to 50 vendors, and organizer Janie Markert has lined up several who will sell items at the festival. Among these are a woman who sells brand-name bags and another
who makes crafts. Yard sale items and repurposed items will also be offered for sale at other vendor spaces. Church members set up several areas where specific items are sold, including Granny’s Attic, where all items are sold by donation, with the exception of the “buck a blouse,” which includes gently used blouses. This year, weather permitting, Granny’s Attic may open on Friday, May 3, at 4 p.m. The Frogs, Frogs, and More stand will feature a large number and variety of frog items for sale. Half-chickens will be sold at the chicken barbecue, and food items at the Spring Thing café will include egg croissant sandwiches in the morning and hot dogs and chips at lunchtime. Church members will also make pies, including blueberry, apple, shoofly, pecan, and cherry, to be sold along with a variety of baked goods. Each visitor will receive a free individual-sized bag of pretzels courtesy of church member and Lititz Mayor Tim Snyder. Activities for children, which will begin at 10 a.m., will include face painting, a dimetoss game, and balloon animals. Organizers also hope to have a hayride.
St. Luke’s pastor Dr. James Haun, a certified barber, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser, team up each year to provide haircuts by donation during the event.
Some of the funds raised by the Spring Thing are used to help members of the community. This year, organizers will donate a percentage to a church member who is a young mother

Allen came to prominence in the United
Kingdom as one of the finest euphonium players of his generation. An associate professor of music at Rider University, Allen is also a visiting professor of euphonium at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 2004, Allen founded the Princeton Brass Band, of which he is musical director; the group is the ensemble-in-residence at Rider University. For concert programs, brass bands borrow from a variety of musical genres. A typical program consists of transcriptions of the classics, marches, hymns, popular music arrangements, solos and original compositions written for the medium.
