Southeast Region of PFBC Promotes Waterway Well-being

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help

For Power Camp Athletes, God Is the Ultimate Teammate

Power Camps keep kids active over the summer. Power Camps allow kids to meet new people and make new friends. Power Camps help kids discover sports, improve athletic skills and foster a love for their games.

Power Camps also establish and encourage relationships with God.

“It’s about mind, body and soul,” said Diana Roth, an area representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a co-director of the New Holland Power Camp. “There are so many life lessons in sports. Athletics can teach you so many lessons. It’s so good to get outside, move and have fun. Hopefully, we’re developing a love for being physical.”

It was a moment in time. It was a momentous moment, but a moment, nonetheless.

In many ways, everything had led up to this for the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) men’s basketball squad. Now, it’s a recent memory upon which all future moments will be judged.

“It was a great moment,” said Jon Mack, who’s been LBC’s head

This year’s edition of FCA’s annual Power Camps will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18, on the athletic fields and inside of Petra Christian Fellowship, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. A later installment of the Power Camps will be presented from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

There are costs involved with attending the camps, and lunch will be provided as part of the experience.

“We want campers to come away knowing more about Jesus. That’s the main purpose,” said Roth. “We want to encourage

them to grow in their relationship with Him, learn the sport and grow in their sport. Kind of like, ‘Hey, I tried a new sport, I want to continue in the sport or try a different sport.’ We want them to be more confident.”

The sports being offered at the Power Camps include soccer, basketball, baseball, field hockey, volleyball, flag football and track and field, as well as outdoor events like BB gun shooting, archery, fishing, outdoor safety and hiking. The Power Camps are designed for youths between the ages of 8 and 12.

reside in Lancaster County, including the Garden Spot, Cocalico, Ephrata, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg areas.

“We’re combining the love of Jesus and sports,” said Roth, a resident of New Holland. “There are a lot of positive vibes. It’s more than just about sports. Every day we have a theme day, and we have new sports this year. It’s a lot of fun. We have music playing, and we want campers to feel super welcomed. I’d love to have more and more kids come out and experience these opportunities. It’s not a competitive sports camp.”

More than 130 preteens are expected to attend the Power Camps. A vast majority of the campers

“Some are repeaters who want to keep coming back,” said Roth. “They’re kids who love sports. A majority come from Christian homes. Some are amazing athletes. They’re looking for a fun, safe, godly experience.”

The Power Camps are staffed by 15 to 18 experienced coaches, many of whom have coached on the scholastic and collegiate levels. The coaches are ably assisted by more than 40 huddle leaders, local high school students, some of whom competed at Power Camps when they were younger.

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Roth. “We don’t just pick any coach. We want coaches who understand the sport. They’re working with high school students and

elementary kids. They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking to build their confidence and foster their love for the sport.”

“I love to see the high school kids (huddle leaders) I worked with kind of do for others what I did for them,” she added. “Just helping (campers) grow in their relationships with God. What I hear the high school kids say is that they love to tell the campers about Jesus.”

FCA’s Power Camps were started in New Holland in 2018, with 50 campers.

It wasn’t the ultimate goal we set for ourselves. Hopefully, it’ll be something our guys will be able to draw from in their careers and with their families.”

to break through,” said Mack. “We felt we did a lot of good things throughout the season. Breaking through and getting that national championship was a break-through for our kids. It was an accomplishment because we played three tough teams (at the tournament). Being able to win it with this group was a pretty cool moment.”

“We found ourselves in the national championship game, and we said, ‘Why not? Let’s win it,’” added Mack.

Fitzgerald was always captivated by Johnny Appleseed, drawn by family ties to the legend, his father’s larger-than-life stories, and a shared restlessness to leave home and discover what lies beyond. “American Rambler” follows Fitzgerald’s year-long journey from Massachusetts to Indiana following Appleseed’s path. The book blends memoir, history, and travelogue.

In late March, the Chargers captured the Division One national championship of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in Branson, Mo. Third-seeded LBC defeated Columbia International 82-75 in the final game of the eightteam, single-elimination tournament.

Junior Camden Hurst, a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School, poured in 27 points for LBC in the national championship game, snagged five rebounds and dished out two assists. Teammates Reaves Hooks and Bennett Bowers each scored 15 points for the Chargers.

LBC opened a 37-27 halftime margin and held Columbia International to 37% shooting for the game.

In addition to the national championship, LBC ended its 2025-26 campaign with a 23-8 overall record.

The 2025-26 version of the LBC men’s basketball program was made up of 18 players, five coaches and a team manager - 24 individuals with a shared purpose pooling their talents and pulling together toward a common goal.

“They’re guys who fit who we are,” said Mack. “They are driven by the vision in our program. But they’re guided by our purpose, which exceeds more than wins. We want to display that when people see us playing. Anytime you play in a national tournament, your platform is expanded.”

The Chargers’ goal entering the season wasn’t necessarily to win a national championship, but neither was the possibility of it ruled out.

“We played well, we got off to a really good start and we complemented each other well,” said Mack. “Against Columbia International, we were outsized at every position. We really had to commit to pressure, and our pace of play gave them problems. We put bodies on their guys in the paint and made them work. The confidence just built throughout the game. We never allowed them to get the lead; we always had a response.”

“I expected us to have success,” said Mack. “I expected us to be prepared for our conference play. Our success starts with the leadership of our captains. We really harped on our level of accountability. I think our captains did a good job of leading in the right ways. We had a group of guys who played hard and together. If you compete, you have a chance to win. I felt like we competed this year.”

There are about 100 small colleges from across the country affiliated with the NCCAA. The Chargers, who received an at-large bid into the NCCAA’s Division One national tournament, were the only team at the event whose program doesn’t offer scholarships.

In 2015, LBC won the NCCAA Division Two national championship.

“For this team, it was a wall we felt like we had

LBC won six of its first nine games of the season. But it may have been a 6-2 run through its nonconference schedule that prepared the Chargers for their postseason glory.

“We learned how to win in the postseason,” said Mack. “I think at the end of the season we prepared better. I think mentally, our guys are better when we’re clicking. What we accomplished was a cool moment, but the process was what mattered most.”

introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.

As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.

“I really do enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share this love of being

on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”

Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations. The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is operated in one of six geographical regions throughout the commonwealth. The Southeast Region is made up of

Lancaster, Berks, Chester, Lehigh, Bucks, Delaware, Schuylkill, Northampton, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and is home to a host of lakes; streams; and major waterways, like the Schuylkill, Delaware and Conestoga rivers.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.”

“In other regions, mountains and backwoods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch monster flathead catfish. There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”

Lititz Christian School will hold Fête en Bleu, its annual spring celebration and auction, on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m. The event will take place at Reality Church, 2301 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 100, Lancaster. more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”
