Get your line wet, and help a vet BY JEFF FALK

You’ve undoubtedly heard of fishing for trout, fishing for compliments, even fishing for men. Well, this is a kind of fishing with a different result. The Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament is all about helping and supporting veterans. Local teenager Case Baccio is the fundraising event’s founder, organizer and promoter. “The mission is to support Some members of Warwick High School athletic teams take part in Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup exercises.

veterans and their families and recognize the sacrifices they made for us,” said Case, an enterprising seventh-grader who attends Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “They protect our country and keep us safe. It’s a show of gratitude to our nation’s heroes. A little bit can go a long way. You don’t have to do something big. It’s just a way of saying, ‘Thank you for your service.’” This year’s edition of the Clear See Fishing tournament pg 3

In the case of rain, the spring cleanup will be pushed back a week to Saturday, May 4, at the same time. Flickinger emphasized that cleanup participants don’t feel like they’re toiling. “Everybody

is happy. We’re having fun,” she said. “Ever ybody works together. It’s nice to have the older generation mixing with the younger generation.” Armed with gloves, brooms, rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows, volunteers typically pick up about 35 bags of trash and sweep sidewalks. Weeding is performed before donated mulch is spread around the bases of downtown trees. “We divide the sections up,” said Flickinger. “One group takes one section, and another group takes another section, and we all mulch at the end.” More than 60 volunteers are expected to participate in Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup. t’s kind of like having people over. Before they come, you might want to organize things and redd up a bit. Putting the downtown’s best foot forward is what Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup all boils down to. But as the annual cleanup has evolved, it’s really become an event revolving around community pride. “It’s not just for Lititz to be clean,” said Shirley Flickinger, co- chair of Venture Lititz ’s s pr ing c le anu p commi tte e. “People care about their community. It gives you a good feeling when your downtown is clean, and the merchants love it. I think people care what the community looks like. They’re proud of their area, they’re proud of their town, they ’re proud of where they live.”

Cleanliness is, after all, next to godliness. Venture Lititz’s annual spring cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon over 14 blocks of the downtown business district, specifically
