Carson is also an aspiring entrepreneur, a budding capitalist with a social conscience.

“(Big Leagues) is my first go-round as far as business things I’ve done,” said Carson. “It’s taught me the importance of communications, building relationships and being responsive. I’ve learned about limitations and brand guidelines. I’ve also learned that it’s definitely important to give back. I think if you have an opportunity to make a difference, you should definitely go for it. It’s really cool to see people use these things.”

About 25 years ago, Joan Schaum learned about Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, through her employer, and she joined a team. She didn’t know that the organization would touch her personally in the future.
Years later, her mother-in-law, Jackie Immel, moved in with Joan and her husband, Jeffrey, to their home in Columbia. While living with the Schaums, Immel was diagnosed with several types of cancer.
The Schaums took Immel to the Lancaster Relay For Life, which was then a 24-hour event focused on walking laps around a track to raise funds for cancer research.

Tait “Papa Tater” Harbaugh and Michelle Harbaugh have been married for 24 years. They share experiences, they share beliefs, they share a life.
Papa Tater is proud of his wife and what she has accomplished as director of Steps to Success, and one of the ways he supports her is nothing short of magical.
“(Michelle) is my dream come
true,” said Papa Tater. “Helping her is a big part of this. I want to make her happy. I love what she’s doing with Steps (to Success). I love magic. I love the magic community. It’s done so much for both of us. We hope (the upcoming event) is a positive for everyone.”
Above all else, the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale is Papa Tater’s initiative to support Michelle and her local nonprofit, Steps to Success. But it’s also his

“She loved walking around the track,” Joan recalled. “When she couldn’t walk around the track anymore for the survivor lap, we put her in a wheelchair and pushed her around the track. She thought it was awesome that all these people were clapping for her and cheering her on, and she had no idea who they were.” In 2016, Immel passed away from kidney failure. The loss prompted the Schaums to take action in Immel’s memory.
“We thought it would be nice to honor her, and she liked the Relay so much, we decided to start our own team,” Jeffrey said. Recalling how much his mom liked the survivors’ dinner part of Relay For Life, he had an idea.
“We thought, ‘Why don’t we start a survivor breakfast?’” Jeffrey said. “Growing up, any time we had big events, my mom cooked. We thought, ‘What a great way to honor her by cooking for the cancer survivors and

their caregivers.’”
They named their team The Breakfast Crew, and they served their first meal of pancakes, baked goods, meats and more in the tent at the Relay For Life site at Conestoga Valley High School.
“We were hoping we could bring in people who couldn’t come for the Friday night meal,” Jeffrey said, noting that at the time, Relay For Life took place from Friday to Saturday.
The Breakfast Crew features about 20 members, all from Joan and Jeffrey’s family.
“My brothers and sister help, and Joan’s family jumped right in, too,” Jeffrey said.

Over the years, the group has served hundreds of people, providing upwards of 150 servings at each meal.
“He never does anything little,” Joan said with affection toward her husband. “He was feeding the Relay For Life workers, the EMS people on-site, anybody walking the track.”
After the pandemic, the format for Relay For Life changed. It became a one-day event that takes place in the afternoon
and evening, negating the need for a breakfast, but the Schaums continued to serve the cause.
“The organizers asked us if we’d like to do a dinner instead, so we did,” Jeffrey said. “Last year, we made chicken potpie. This year, we’re doing homemade chicken corn soup and vegetable beef soup.”
They still call their team The Breakfast Crew, even though they are now serving dinner, and their contributions have extended beyond Relay day.
Each February, they help to host Taste of Relay, a potluck-style dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers. During the Christmas season, they organize a Breakfast with Santa event.
On Saturday, March 28, they’ll host breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Easter Egg Hunt, Breakfast & Spring Vendor Market. The event is open to the public and will take place at the Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m., and the event will run until noon. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/4aUSP6V.
“Everything is donated for the meals we provide,” Joan said. “We don’t charge Relay for anything. Our family members all help

out, even if they can’t be there the day of the meal. They’ll make something or donate something.”
The Schaums encourage others to get involved in Relay For Life, noting that the organization has numerous ways for people to volunteer, including helping with setup or cleanup at the Relay or volunteering with other activities throughout the year.
Although they didn’t realize how big a part Relay For Life would play in their lives when Joan joined that first team decades ago, they both say they can’t imagine not being involved with the cause.
Both emphasize how positive Relay For Life is, focusing on optimism and joy.
“It’s not a morbid event. It’s a celebration,” Joan said. “It’s about the mission to celebrate life, remember loved ones, fight back and offer hope.”
Both Joan and Jeffrey agree that tackling a cause like eradicating cancer is an overwhelming task, but they believe that everyone can make an impact.
“Everybody says, ‘What can I do? We can’t fix this,’” Jeffrey said. “Well, there’s strides being made every day in the fight against cancer. Having The Breakfast Crew is something we can do. We can’t do everything, but we can do this.”
The 2026 Relay For Life will be held on Friday, June 12, from 3 to 11 p.m. at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. Now called the Festival of Hope, the event will feature survivor activities and dinner, a caregiver area, a glow run, inflatables and other kids’ activities, food trucks, vendors and more. For more information or to support a team, visit www.relayfor life.org/palancaster.
Photographers of all skill levels are invited to submit their images from throughout Pennsylvania’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed for the annual Save the Bay Photo Contest sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).
Photo submissions should illustrate the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, as well as the plants, animals, and people relying on it. Images depicting water, wildlife, recreation, farms, and flora will be considered.
In last year’s Save the Bay Photo Contest, the photograph “River’s Bend” by George Kurzik of Hellam won the top prize from judges. His entry captured the view from Chiques Rock in Lancaster County overlooking the bend in the Susquehanna River toward Accomac in York County in 2023.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 27. Photos will be narrowed down by a CBF panel based on subject matter, composition, focus, lighting, uniqueness, and impact. Members of the public will then be able to vote for their favorite image in the Viewer’s Choice Gallery from Monday, April 6, to Friday, April 24.
Winners will receive a one-year CBF membership and a cash prize. Winning photographs will also be featured on CBF’s website, social media, 2027 calendar, and award-winning Save the Bay magazine. More information and submission instructions can be found at www.cbf.org/ photocontest.

The 12th edition of the annual Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale, sort of an amped-up yard sale geared toward magicians, entertainers and those who love them, will be staged from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, inside the gymnasium of Zion Lutheran Church, Steps to Success’ home at 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The unique fundraising event is free to attend, and freewill offerings for Steps to Success - which provides child care and early education - will be accepted.
“It’s energetic,” said Papa Tater, the event’s official coordinator. “A lot of time, I’m feeling joy. These magicians are friends. There’s all this magic to look at. It can be very electric. A lot of people seem to understand that they’re helping a nonprofit child care.”
“It just seems like a blend of our passions,” said Michelle.
Some 100 professional and semiprofessional magicians and entertainers from five states are expected to attend the event, and the swap meet and sale will feature 40 tables overflowing with tricks, games, illusions, props, slights of hand and sight gags. The fundraiser will also include a concession stand stocked with beef hot dogs, sloppy joes, black bean chili, assorted snacks, coffee, water and soft drinks.
“Even if you’re there to look, it’s fun,” said Papa Tater. “There will be thousands of tricks and props, everything from beginner’s magic to stage illusions. Every year there is something I never knew existed or something I never thought I’d see in person. There are no performances, no scheduled events. But if you ask, someone will do a trick. We’re also trying to expand the awareness of magic and encourage new

magicians.”
“There are some people who come for the social aspect,” continued Papa Tater. “We get a lot of magicians who are looking for certain types of magic. Some people collect magic. There are very few magic shops anymore, and we get such a big variety of things.”
Last year, the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale took in about $1,200 for Steps to Success. Since its inception in 2015, the convention has raised nearly $10,000 for the local nonprofit.
This year, the raised funds will go toward improvements in educational and child care services for kids.
“I really enjoy the feeling that this is a positive in the magic community,” said Papa Tater. “Almost everyone there is saying every year, ‘You’re doing this again, right?’ Every year the child care center makes more than it did the year before.”
One of the magicians’ most common tricks involves accumulating treasure.
“With magic, there are thousands of tricks I could buy,” said Papa Tater. “When I first started, I was buying everything I had interest in. I realized there were other magicians who had the same issues. We realized this would be a fun event to do, that it could be a fundraiser and that Steps to Success could benefit. Now we’ve been doing it 11 years, and it’s kind of gotten into my blood.”
Founded by Michelle in 1995, Steps to Success is funded through private pay, subsidies from the state, fundraisers and donations. Steps to Success serves about 280 children from six weeks to 12 years old and employs nearly 50 staff members.

that provides general information about specific local scholastic sports on the internet. Carson maintains, operates, markets and solicits banner advertising for four websites - www.llsoccer.org, www.lllacrosse.com, www .berkssoccer.com and www .yasoccer.com.
Family friend Dave Hartlaub, the longtime head boys’ soccer coach at Conestoga Valley, served as the inspiration for the initial enterprise, www .llsoccer.org. But, backed by support from his dad, Ross Kramer, Carson has really taken the ball and run with it, so to speak.
“We realized there was a big need for our community,” said Carson. “I know it’s a great community resource, and I get excited about helping the community. It’s free and the community is using it. I’ll see some of my classmates flipping through it, and that makes me happy. It gives local sports the support it needs.”
Big Leagues’ four websites provide league information and statistics for the Lancaster-Lebanon boys’ and girls’ soccer leagues, the Lancaster-Lebanon boys’ and girls’ lacrosse leagues, the Berks County boys’ and girls’ soccer leagues and the York-Adams boys’ and girls’ soccer leagues. The sites offer schedules, standings, rosters, results, club affiliations and player leaderboards.
Coaches of each league’s teams are given access to the back ends of the websites and are responsible for the entering their teams’ results, as well as the accuracy and immediacy of those outcomes.
“The way our sites work, they’re not directly associated with the leagues,” said Carson. “We partner with coaches, and they’re in charge of updating scores. The coaches are the ones who are entering their scores after every game. I’m here if there are lapses. I work with developing busi-
ness partners.”
Carson’s work on the websites consumes about 20 hours of his time each week, an amount that fluctuates with the athletic seasons of the year.
“It’s definitely a grind,” said Carson. “I send so many emails, and a lot of it is responding to emails. There’s a lot of time that goes into it. During the seasons, I also do social media for the websites.”
Since being launched in 2020, www.llsoccer .org has grown from fewer than 168,000 page views to 343,000 page views and 14,000 active users. The newer websites have displayed similar growth.
“During the summer of 2024, right before school started, my dad said to me, ‘You can either get a job flipping burgers or take what we started and see what you can do with it,’” said Carson. “I started prospecting, reaching out to hundreds of coaches to show how it could help them.”

“It was important to me that Carson learned the trade of sales,” said Ross. “Two summers ago, Carson needed a job. This first venture could be a springboard to other ventures. The lessons he’s learned with it have been well worth it.”
While he’s been playing soccer since he was 6, Carson has interests beyond the soccer field. Academically, he is ranked third in his class, and he serves as the vice president of Warwick’s Class of 2027.
“I value the academics side, and I try to stay on top of my grades,” Carson said.
“But after I’m done with high school, I’m not going to be involved with playing anymore. I’m going to be on the sidelines running the websites. I feel like focusing on something that’s going to benefit my future is important. I definitely want to go to college for some kind of business. I’m pretty business minded. I’m hoping to use this experience in the future.”
