Lititz Youth Gives Back okyn Valleskey, who goes by the nickname Skey, is a junior at Manheim Township High School (MTHS). Since the fall of 2020, Skey has been helping the March of Dimes, first by holding a diaper drive and now by organizing a March for Babies team. Although Skey’s involvement with the organization, which promotes healthy starts for all mothers and babies, only began last Nov. 17, on National Preemie Day, his connection to the mission of the organization goes back to 2004, when he was born seven weeks premature. Skey came into the world via an emergency C-section, and he spent his first days in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) fighting to stay alive. The son of Erin and David Valleskey of Lititz, Skey said that knowing the story of his birth has enlightened his perspective on the health of newborns. “I have always been told the story, and it has made

me appreciate what the March of Dimes and hospitals do for children in the NICU,” said Skey. Following Preemie Day 2020, Skey started considering ways he could help. “I contacted the March of Dimes to see what I could do locally,” recalled Skey, who noted that options included a diaper drive and the March for Babies. Skey began a diaper drive around Thanksgiving 2020 by reaching out to his neighbors, family, and friends. “They were very generous with their donations,” shared Skey. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciated it.” Skey specifically asked donors for preemie-size diapers, along with size 1 and size 2. “It’s the smaller children parents are not prepared for with an early birth because they are so unexpected (at that time),” he explained. “(The parents) probably have larger diapers stocked up but not the smaller ones.” Next, Skey devised a plan to increase the number of diapers he collected. “I wanted to take the

“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.” To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. Proceeds raised from the event will help provide trauma therapy for the survivors at The Harbor.

Panelists who are lined up to take part are Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Derek Thompson, founder of Abolition Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “ What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are

preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual care and support in a Christ-centered program. “The Harbor focuses on restoration and reentry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands of traffickers,” said Esbenshade. With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-the-clock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said Esbenshade. Esbenshade said that the program is imple-

Dementia Friendliness from pg 1 Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia

Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is

conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said. Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by making people aware that it’s OK to have this disease,” she said. “We don’t need to hide it or be ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when she trains team members at GSV’s Meadow View Memory Support campus, she focuses on showing them different

approaches to a situation. “There is a way to enhance quality of life for someone who is going through this and their care partners,” said Crystal, who is planning a Wednesday, April 28, breakfast for a limited number of people. The breakfast will bring key businesses in the Lancaster County area that are already doing dementia work on board with the organization. “(The breakfast is about) how we can partner together to make this a dementia-friendly Lancaster County,” said Crystal. For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Man-

The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic. “Participants decided to jump rope, dunk

They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The inperson event will feature a familyfriendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps

raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in person. “If you’re looking for ways to put your lifeaffirming beliefs into action and truly help your local community, please join us,” she remarked. “The funds you raise - whether it’s $50 or $5,000 - all are used to meet the immediate needs of the pregnant, parenting and post-abortive clients we serve. The cross-currents of nature and art will be the focus of an event on Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include artists who depict the natural world, vendors that offer plants that are native to the central Pennsylvania region and special presentations and demonstrations. Temple Avenue, a swing and blues musical group featuring a vocalist, will headline the Eicher program on Sunday, May 23, at 2 p.m. The group will perform classic tunes and new selections.

Vintage Revival Spring Fever Market Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

Debbie Luther, market facilitator for the Vintage Revival Market, recently recalled the origins of the gathering. “A group of ladies used to meet in a Walmart parking lot to share vintage items found at yard sales and auctions,” said Luther, adding that she thinks those meetups began around 2012. Eventually the group began holding markets at an Akron church, and the event was held at that location for some time. Eventually, the group members became too busy to continue to run the market. Luther, who had been a vendor at the market with her own Dazzling Daisy Designs jewelry, became the facilitator, moving the market gatherings to a space in the Shops at Rockvale that once housed West Elm Outlet. The next Vintage Revival Market will be held at Suite 1079, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public, and it will feature more than 50 vendors, live music, food trucks, and giveaways. Among the many vendors will be those selling vintage furniture, antiques, vintage glassware, Pyrex items, lighting, knick-knacks, vintage planters with plants, wallhangings, artwork, vintage clothing,

and more. “We have live music all day,” said Luther, who has lined up two musicians to perform at the Spring Fever event, which she plans to hold inside and outside the Rockvale venue. A coffee cart and a cupcake vendor will be located inside, and food trucks will also be on site. One food vendor will have beers, wines, and ciders. Food trucks will include those selling tacos, soft pretzels, breakfast sandwiches, chicken wings, and french fries. Luther noted that antiques and vintage items are differentiated by age. “Antiques are older than vintage,” said Luther. Rather than being 100 years old, vintage items are 30 or more years old. “I am not an expert on vintage, but it’s (mostly) from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s,” said Luther. There is no admission fee to attend the market. Vendors pay a rental fee that Luther uses for live music for the event, advertising, and giveaways for attendees. Any funds that are left from the Spring Fever event will be donated to North Star Initiative, a local organization that fights human trafficking. North Star has created a sanctuary for female survivors of human trafficking called The Harbor. The Vintage Revival Market is located near the Disney Store behind the Cracker Barrel restaurant. effort a step further to reach outside my neighborhood,” said Skey. “I thought of local places that would probably support this cause.” Skey knew Oregon Dairy had held fundraisers for area organizations, so he contacted the grocery store along Oregon Pike. “They were glad to help with the drive,” reported Skey, who worked with Curvin Hurst to set up a collection at the store and with Jon Hurst to film a promotional video that was posted to the store’s Instagram and Facebook accounts. The in-store drive was scheduled to run from Jan. 11 to 21, but it was extended when diaper donations exceeded expectations. When it ended, Skey was able to donate 2,269 diapers to the March

of Dimes, with the majority of those coming from Oregon Dairy customers. Looking ahead, Skey is busy putting together a team for the virtual March for Babies fundraiser. “(Participants) sign up and run however many miles to show (their) support for the March of Dimes,” explained Skey, who said those who wish to take part can run or walk on their own time. He is working to gather friends and others to take part, with initial efforts already raising about $400. The virtual walk is planned for Saturday, May 8. Church Will Hold Free Easter Dinner And “Drive To Calvary” Celebrate Easter with a meal and drive-through event at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The church will offer a free takeout ham dinner and Easter celebration on Saturday, March 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. The dinner will include a ham slice, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. Reservations are required for the meal and can be made by calling 717-665-4499 by Wednesday, March 24. “Reserved meals may be picked up outside the church, and they will be brought to your vehicle,” said Kris Gray, one of the organizers of the event.

Over the past few months, the church has held several free meal distributions, including soup giveaways and a Christmas dinner. “We had a wonderful response to our Christmas takeout ham dinner, so we decided to hold it again at Easter,” Gray noted. In addition to the meal, the event includes a treat bag for children age 12 and under, which will be full of goodies. Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is facing mounting medical difficulties and is seeking someone to take over Lloyd’s Rides. “Right now, it’s just me in this organization,” he said. “My wife is a registered nurse, and she takes good care of me. I want to find somebody who will take care of this organization because it’s

Martial arts activities have expanded to include instruction in karate, Tae Kwon Do, and both beginner and intermediate fencing. These programs are open to both youths and adults. Aquatic programs are hosted in two indoor pools at Lititz recCenter, including nine levels of youth swim lessons and precompetitive advanced swim instruction for youths interested in competitive swimming opportunities. A new Splash Pool Egg Hunt will include swim lesson students on Sunday, April 11. Each week, a dozen aquatic fitness classes will be offered, ranging from high intensity to calming Water Tai Chi. A new Aqua Mix dance class will be offered on Thursdays at 8 a.m., and a weekly Office of Aging Senior Water Exercise class will be free to the community on Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. In preparation for a return to local golf courses, a Golf Conditioning program will be available on Saturday mornings for men and women. More than 100 group fitness classes with a combination of live and virtual instructors will be offered in socially distanced fitness studios this spring. Classes will feature a wide range of focuses and intensities, with a dozen or more ideal for active older adults. For more relaxed recreation, Art Escape is a new painting class with local artist Kirsten Sherick slated for Monday afternoons or Friday evenings. People of all experience levels are welcome to register.
