Church Sets Free Sweets Thirstdays
COBYS To Offer Online Educational Classes By Francine Fulton
Brian Willison, lead pastor of Speedwell Heights Brethren in Christ Church, 413 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, is very specific about the reasons behind the church’s new ministry called Free Sweets Thirstdays. “We want (those who travel Brubaker Valley Road) to know if they need help - physical, emotional, spiritual - (that) we’re here for them,” said Willison. “That’s what we want to communicate.” To reach into the community, Willison, along with community impact pastor Bonner Davis and Willison’s growth group, have planned Free Sweet Thirstdays for the two Thursdays each month from 7 to 9 a.m. from August through November. Free Sweets Thirstdays will be held on Aug. 13 and 27, Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 8 and 22, and Nov. 5 and 19. Prepackaged treats such as granola bars and pastries will be available at the See Free Sweets Thirstdays pg 5

MHALC Presents CMAP During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times.
Abby Keiser, director, recently announced that the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster, is offering free online support classes.

The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance Program (EAP),” explained McDevitt, who added that the organization provided a lot of guidance in the best way to execute the plan, especially emphasizing that less than a quarter of each patient’s session should be spent on paperwork. “We wanted it See MHALC pg 3

Local families now have an opportunity to receive support and educational services all without leaving their homes thanks to online programming being offered by the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster. Among the virtual programs being offered is a kinship support program, which is taking place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 19. The program is open to kinship caregivers those who are raising a relative’s child. During the sessions, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who have taken on the new role of caregiver can talk about topics specific to kinship care and network with other people in similar situations. “We are doing everything virtually to break down time barriers. Meet-And-Greet To Support Reptile Sanctuary Sammy Zerbe, a rising seventh-grader at Lancaster Country Day School, will host a service project to support Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary on Friday, Aug. 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event, which will be held outdoors in the field on Hamilton Road, Lancaster, across from Lancaster Country Day School, will be a meet-and-greet with Forgotten Friend director Jesse Rothacker and various reptiles. Social distancing will be observed, and masks are recommended. Through Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Rothacker cares for many reptiles until they can find a forever home. Usually, he supports the sanctuary by presenting educational shows. Because of COVID-19, these shows have been limited, so Sammy decided to host the upcoming event in support of Rothacker and Forgotten Friend. Donations at the event will be appreciated. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there. After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book - trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. recommend a therapist, and CMAP will provide three free confidential counseling sessions. The client will call the provider for an appointment, but MHALC will send out a resource packet to the client and follow up to provide additional support as needed. Thompson said that if the client wishes to continue after three sessions, she has a list of insurances the providers will accept. “If they don’t have insurance, we are partnering with Lancaster Osteopathic Health for their copay assistance program,� said Thompson. “That information is included in the resource packet I send out.� According to Thompson, more than 30% of people in the United States experience anxiety on a regular basis, ranging from fear of insects to extreme social anxiety. She noted that anxiety and depression are common responses to a pandemic, but isolation during a season when people are used to being outdoors with others compounds those issues. “We can’t function on a typical seasonal level,� Thompson said. “A lot of parents don’t know how to handle the financial aspect of going back to work and (supporting their children’s schooling). There are a lot of questions.� The partnership has set a goal of helping to alleviate these issues by providing professional support to those workers in need. “Having someone outside your family to talk to can help,� said Thompson. Benefit Archery Shoot Slated Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, will hold its 11th annual Benefit 3-D Archery Shoot on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 a.m. to noon. Archers of all ages may test their skills on the 30-target course with a variety of animal targets and shooting angles. The registration fee includes a hot brunch at 10 a.m., during which Brian Martin will speak. Martin is the lead pastor at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community in East Earl. devoted to getting to the (patient’s) story,� said McDevitt. “We want people to feel comfortable and to walk away with some tools, skills, and ideas on how to move forward with the angst or fear that they have.� MHALC hired Caryn Thompson to be the project coordinator. In early May, she began researching the best way to implement the program, amassing a list of nearly 70 providers, which was reduced to 10 providers based on grant applications. The final list represents a variety, from groups to individuals, with providers that offer bilingual services, those who focus on seniors, one whose specialty is the Plain population, and more. “We wanted to make sure we (reached) everybody in the county,� Thompson said. By early June, Thompson was holding online training sessions for the providers to let them know what was expected and to explain the documentation they needed to complete so that MHALC will have the demographic information needed to continue the program. McDevitt explained that the program is designed as an approach to the increase in anxiety, depression, and other fearrelated behaviors associated with the shutdown. “We have seen an increase in police calls, and crisis outreach is starting to tick up now,� she said. Lancaster County residents who are in need of professional support may call MHALC at 717-397-7461 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an intake form. “You will talk to one of our navigators who will help you identify a therapist,� said McDevitt. They don’t have to feed their children dinner before (the session) or get them dressed or drive to a building and figure out parking. Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Receives Grant COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds
of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-to-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. Speedwell Church draws members from Lebanon, Lititz, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens, Denver, and beyond. “(Our membership) is pretty far reaching,” said Willison, noting that Brubaker Valley Road is heavily traveled on weekdays. “In the morning, this road has constant traffic,” he added, explaining that those traveling between areas west of Lancaster and the greater Ephrata area use the road to avoid the busier highways. “There are work trucks, tractor-trailers … there is all this traffic, and we think that’s a great opportunity to meet people.” The effort has roots in a similar program Willison was involved in when he served as executive pastor of Hempfield Brethren in Christ on Marietta Avenue, where the congregation gave away coffee
and doughnuts on the first Friday of each month. “What happened was that we started building relationships with people,” said Willison, who spoke of a couple that stopped often. “She was taking him for cancer treatments, and they would come in ... and ask us to pray for them,” he said, adding that one man who stopped was new to the area and came inside for prayer. “(Those who stopped) asked, ‘Are you trying to get members?’ and we said, ‘No, we just wanted to meet you,’” recalled Willison. “It became a ministry of meeting people at their places of need and being able to talk and share with them. It (was) not about getting members; it (was) about becoming friends.” Now Willison and members of Speedwell Church would like to offer the same to those who traverse the area on Thursday mornings. “(We hope to see) people who are heading to work and we will say, ‘Anything we could pray for (for you)?’” said Willison. “We aren’t going to say, ‘Come to our church’ or give them any materials,” he added. “We want them to feel comfortable

knowing we are here for our community, especially with everything that’s going on now in our nation.” Willison shared that in the year he has been lead pastor at Speedwell, he has witnessed the kindheartedness of the congregation in giving to the Lititz Ministerium food drive and in projects involving making activity bags for children. “This church is a very giving church,” he said. “(Members and friends of the church are) very generous when it comes to helping.” Willison hopes that giving spirit is evident in Free Sweets Thirstdays. “It’s a place for people to come in and get something to start their day off and know that church cares,” he said. “If they’re having a hard time, we want to be available to them for whatever that looks like. If people are struggling with food (insecurity), we can offer them food. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. Since March, demand for the food bank’s services has increased more than 40% as families face financial uncertainty in the wake of the

Hospice Labor Day Auction To Be Held Virtually By Francine Fulton

Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially,” said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice.” Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year,” Minardi explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice.” Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-at-home order was issued. “We went out to a remote working location on March 17 and we talked about this incessantly from that time until (now),” said Minardi. “We raise nearly $1 million, so it was not an easy decision to make. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that.” On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items - quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia,” Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website.” See HCC pg 7

Some are digitally native, but we tend to serve an older population and we want to give them time to warm up (to the process),” she said. “We will have a mailing that has step-by-step instructions.” People will be simultaneously bidding online. “You will get a notification that you have been outbid and you will have the option to bid again,” said Minardi. “All you do is click a button. You don’t have to go back in and register. You just say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’” The auction will close on Sept. 15. and whoever has the highest bid will win the item. “We will notify the winners on Sept. 16 if they won or lost the items,” Minardi said, noting that people will be asked to pick up their items at HCC in Lancaster. New items, quilts and sports memorabilia donations are being accepted at Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, by appointment only.
