Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them. The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal. “I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.” Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in. “I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “ They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.” I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. he 2025 Solanco Fair was held from Sept. 17 to 19 at the Solanco Fairgrounds. After withstanding some drizzly weather for the parade on Sept. 17, fairgoers enjoyed sunshine for the remainder of the fair, enjoying an assortment of activities and contests, like various baking contests and the Baby Parade. The Baked Products Section at the 2025 Solanco Fair had a total of 164 exhibitors with 345 entries, and 35 of those exhibitors participated in the annual baking contests. Four bakers were selected in these special competitions on Sept. 17. T h e Home m ad e C ho co l ate Cake Contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF), and the winner this year was Bethany Osborne of Holtwood with her chocolate marble s’mores layer cake. The PSACF also sponsors the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest, and the winner for 2025 was Neve Haun of Lancaster. Pennsylvania’s Incredible Angel Food Cake contest was once again co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Lauren Osborne from Holtwood had the winning entry this year with her strawberry angel food cake. Nine-year-old Annelise Hrovath of Millersville won the Cookies, Brownies and Bars Junior Baking contest with her never box brownies again. This contest is sponsored by the PA Preferred program, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and encourages youths to find locally grown or produced ingredients for their baking.
