Local Student Will Perform at Carnegie Hall
BY GEORGE DEIBEL

It’s an oft-told joke that is thought to have originated in the 1950s.
A pedestrian on 57th Street in New York City sees a musician emerging from a taxi and asks, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
The musician replies, “Practice, practice, practice.”
While the response is meant to be sardonic, it does explain how Michaela Meyrick earned an invitation to perform at the iconic venue.

Michaela, a senior at Solanco High School, was accepted into a prestigious choral program called the Honors Performance Series and will perform at Carnegie Hall Thursday, Feb. 5, through Monday, Feb. 9.
Michaela explained that the Honors Performance Series is a program funded by George Mason University that invites high school students from all over the country

The Southern End of Lancaster County has an art show it can call its own.
The Lancaster County Fine Arts & Craft Show will be held rain or shine Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. Admission and parking are free. The facility is handicapped-accessible.
There will be food trucks selling french fries, sandwiches, and pretzels.

Solanco High School held its Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony Sept. 12. This year’s class includes one of the past district championship teams, two individual athletes, and a couple who have made their mark in the Solanco area.
Keith and Wanda Wagner were enshrined as friends of Solanco athletics. Keith, a 1973 graduate of Solanco, participated in the school’s wrestling program and attended

Proceeds will benefit the operation and maintenance of the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), which is located at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. There will be 38 exhibiting artists representing Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, including one with works from Solanco High School students.

LCAA publicity chair Patricia Keller said there will be watercolors, oils, jewelry, glass, pottery, photographs, mixed media, paper, and sculptures. Go to www.lcaaonline.org for more information on the event.
The Other Brotherz will perform live music.
“It’s a really high-quality show,” LCAA gallery director Carol Hess said. “It’s juried. To get into the show, (exhibitors) have to submit three photos of the work, and we pick the best artists and the best craftsmen for the show. It’s not just your regular art and craft show. It’s kind of a step above.”
Keller added, “I hope that people come out and they even appreciate the handmade things that people do. I think today we’re losing a little bit of appreciating arts and things that people craft. There’s so much creativity, and people can know that they

Tips for Preventing Bathroom Falls
“Danger” might not be the first word to come to mind when individuals consider their bathrooms. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, more than 1.5 million aging adults visit emergency rooms for fall-related injuries, many of which occur in the bathroom.
Many falls and spills that occur in the bathroom can be prevented. Seniors or their loved ones can make some minor adjustments to bathrooms so falls are less likely to happen.
alternatives, individuals can plug in LED night lights that make it easy to see when making nighttime visits to the bathroom.
Non-slip bath mats can also be a helpful addition to a bathroom. Non-slip bath mats often utilize rubber-backed liners to ensure the mats stay put even when floors get wet or damp from condensation after a hot bath or shower. Non-slip mats can be placed where individuals will enter and exit the shower and even by the toilet and sink to help individuals feel steady on their feet.
The Benefits of Home Health Aides
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.

People should install grab bars in their shower and bath and elsewhere, as necessary. Grab bars make it easier for aging men and women to get into and out of the shower or the tub by giving them something to hold on to. This assistance can be especially helpful for seniors who must step up and over their tubs to get into the shower. Although grab bars are primarily used in showers and tubs, they also can be installed alongside toilets for seniors who could use a little help sitting down and getting up. AARP notes that sheltering arm grab bars provide the best support around toilets. Such grab bars come around both sides of the toilet and look similar to armrests.
Seniors may also want to install LED lighting in their bathrooms. Poor lighting in a bathroom can make it hard for seniors to see and thereby make them more vulnerable to falls. Lighting can be especially problematic for seniors who make frequent bathroom visits overnight. Even bathrooms with seemingly adequate lighting may be dangerous if they feature dated light fixtures that rely on incandescent bulbs. These bulbs burn out with greater frequency than LED alternatives, which can last for years. The longer bulbs last, the less often seniors need to change them, which also reduces their risk for injury. In addition to replacing traditional fixtures with LED
Seniors should remember to clean their bathrooms regularly. Bathroom surfaces can grow slippery from soap scum and condensation, and prompt and routine cleaning can reduce the likelihood that seniors will fall in their bathrooms. Seniors who have difficulty keeping up with household cleaning can hire a cleaning service or ask a younger relative to help them.
Seniors can fall anywhere in a home, but they may be more likely to do so in a bathroom. Various measures can help make bathrooms safer for aging individuals.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications. Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations. Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

to apply. She found out she had been accepted in June.
“I was ecstatic,” Michaela said. “It felt like everything had come full circle with all of my performances. It still feels unreal. I feel like being there with world-class composers and conductors and being with all of those high-level performers is really going to be a very educational opportunity and a place where I might be able to find just like that group of people that I’ll stay with the rest of my life.”
Solanco High School music teacher Erin Biles stated that Michaela’s dedication enables her to be successful. “She is all in with everything musically that she does,” said Biles. “She practices at home; she practices with me almost every day. We have an advisory period, which is like a study hall. She’s here every day. She’s participated in county and district chorus. This will be her third year auditioning for the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) District 7 chorus, which is a higher-level ensemble. Going through that process involves a lot of extra time, a lot of extra dedication. And of course, she has natural talent.”
Biles added, “She also needs to be willing to learn and grow and accept criticism, and she’s been able to do that well over the years. I love seeing the growth from freshman year to senior year of all of my kids, especially Michaela. She came in with this sweet voice, and we worked on it and we’ve expanded the range a little bit. She has a very wide range. She could be an alto or a soprano, depending on what the needs of the choir are.”
The Honors Performance Series requires tuition, and members of the community can help Michaela by going to https://gofund .me/2335430b.
“I’ve always really been involved in singing,” said Michaela, whose favorite type of music is classical. “I’ve always sung at my church (Oxford Church of God).” She performed for the first time as a second-grader at Bethany Christian School. “I love sharing music with others,” she said. “I really feel passionate about the art and the language that the message that music can tell. It’s just magical.”
Michaela started attending Solanco schools in fifth grade and began playing the flute while continuing to sing. She is appreciative of the support she has received. “Everybody here has always been super supportive of my dreams and aspirations, and Mrs. Biles especially has been super helpful with my vocal training,” said Michaela. “And my best friend (Veronica Cahill) has always been supportive of me. I originally knew of her as

the girl with the purple clarinet. We really connected in around seventh grade, and we’ve been best friends ever since.”
Michaela is in the process of applying to colleges. “I would like to get into West Chester and double major in music performance and music education,” she said. “Then after that, the end goal for my career would be to open up my own private vocal studio, to teach private voice lessons, so that way I can have my own hours, and I can do musical theater on the side.”
In addition to being part of the chorus and chorale, Michaela is a member of the Solanco marching band, helps the orchestra, and is the treasurer for the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society.
“Watching my students achieve is the highlight of my career,” said Biles. “It’s every year watching the seniors flourish from when they were freshmen. It’s watching them get into district chorus and county chorus and regionals and all that. It’s watching them succeed in the musical, and then when something like this happens, when Michaela takes it upon herself to apply for this Honors Performance Series, it’s just one of the best parts about my career, honestly, to see a kid go after something they really want and to achieve it. I mean, what more can you ask for, right?”
The Solanco Coats For All coat drive will accept donations throughout October. Community members are invited to donate new or used coats, hats, gloves, and snowsuits. New socks will also be accepted. Donations will be received at Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, 227 W. Fourth

art and craft shows everywhere for years,” she said. “That’s how I supported myself, and I traveled all over to do them. We have lots of those type of shows in northern Lancaster County, but we’ve never had anything like this in the Southern End. I just felt that rather than competing against those other shows like Mount Gretna, like Long’s Park, and other shows that are up that way that it would be nice to do something in the Southern End. And plus the buildings at the fairground are just wonderful for this type of thing.”
The Lancaster County Art Association is holding the “Autumn Daze V & the Great Pumpkin & Outlandish Orb Challenge” exhibit and contest. The reception will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. at LCAA. Papier mâché pumpkins to decorate are available for pickup at the art association. The LCAA gallery is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Visit the aforementioned website for more details on the contest.
