In 1967, Solanco High School hosted its inaugural Solanco Cross Countr y Invitational. Athletes from 17 schools took to the streets of Quarryville for the race, which started and ended at Legion Park. Although Solanco’s cross-country team didn’t know it at the time, it had just planted the seeds of a multigenerational community tradition known today as the Kevin Regan Memorial Run. This year, the Kevin Regan Memorial Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Elementary school students in Solanco School District are invited to participate in the event, which will kick off at 9 a.m. with a 400-meter race for kindergar tners. A 400-meter race for first-graders will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 600-meter race for second-graders at 9:30 a.m., an 800-meter race for third-graders at 9:45 a.m., and an 800-meter race fo r fo u r t h - g rad e rs at 10:15 a.m. A 1,200-meter race for fifth-graders will take place at 10:15 a.m., and the event will wrap up with an awards ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Runners should arrive 20 minutes before the start of their race to review a course map with a parent and bring their signed permission slip to the starting line when their race is called. Students will receive medals for first through sixth place for each grade level. During the 1970s, the Kevin Regan Memorial Run changed

Library Displays Art From Solanco Fair
Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity will host a party and fundraiser celebrating its 40th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 1. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Rock Lititz, 50 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. The celebration will feature live music from The Eighties Club band, plus food and drinks and an opportunity to revisit Habitat’s past, learn about present projects, and see what is possible in the future. Attendees are encouraged but not required to wear ‘80s-style attire. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, originally known as Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity, was founded by members of the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster and officially began its mission to build affordable homes, community, and hope on Oct. 1, 1986. The Lancaster and Lebanon Habitat affiliates merged in 2016 to form Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of four decades, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has built 300 homes, enabled hundreds of people to become firsttime homebuyers, served more than 330 families, and worked alongside thousands of volunteers, donors, and community partners. Notable achievements in the organization’s history include the completion of the Emerald Valley Build - 70 new homes in the southwest corner of Lancaster city; the renovation of the Wooden Nickel Tavern into Habitat’s first official headquarters; and the establishment of the Lancaster Habitat ReStore, the fourth-ever ReStore. In 2026, Habitat has celebrated its 40-year history of building alongside the

Red Sand Project Shines Light on NSI’s Mission BY JEFF FALK
Whether through the eyes or the mind’s imagination, the act of visualization possesses the power to create moving images, bold stimuli and lasting impressions. Few endeavors reflect the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI) as well as the Red Sand Project. “Red sand is used because it immediately attracts your attention,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of NSI for four years. “When you pour it on the sidewalk, it represents people who have fallen through the cracks. Filling the cracks symbolizes that we’re not willing to have people fall in the cracks. We will become a community where trafficking can end.” Recently, Clark, Ariana Sequino and Michelle Curiel, all members of the NSI team - a nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking and exploitation - took advantage of an opportunity to participate in the national Red Sand Project. About 20 human trafficking opponents from the Lancaster County district attorney’s task force, the Lancaster YWCA and Zoe International joined NSI in a show of solidarity against the societal dilemma. “It’s a stirring project when it’s being done because it’s very visual,” said Clark.

“It was both somber and joyful. People were starting to ask, ‘What is this?’ We told them, ‘Human trafficking is here, and we’re standing against it. That’s why we’re here.’ “I don’t think many people know about the Red Sand Project,” continued Clark. “The purpose is to drive awareness to the issue and the services that are available. We’re making a statement, and we want to make others aware. Trafficking is happening. We want people to know about North Star, because people are encouraged when they know there are resources. I keep running into people who don’t know about North Star and what we do.” According to Clark, the number one tool in attracting potential victims to human trafficking is social media, and force is only used in about three percent of the total human trafficking cases. She also said that more than half of the victims of human trafficking were exploited by family members or trusted caregivers. “We need to strengthen young people by connecting them with safe adults,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield. “Victims are attracted by potential See NSI pg 5

The competition was renamed to honor Solanco alumnus and former cross-country athlete Kevin Regan shortly after his unexpected death in college. In 2014, race organizers partnered with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries to use the Kevin Regan Memorial Run as an opportunity to collect donations for the organization’s food bank. Every year, students participating in the run are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate, and a traveling trophy is awarded to the school with the largest percentage of students who brought donations. After the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Kevin Regan Memorial
Run’s average attendance dropped from hundreds of students to less than fifty. In recent years, event organizer and former Solanco High School cross-country coach Craig Ausel has sought to revitalize the event by partnering with local businesses such as Dolce Vita, Oola Bowls and Maplehofe Dairy to offer a goodie bag of prizes to each runner at the finish line. Prize bags include bracelets, snacks and coupons donated by the sponsoring businesses. This year, Ausel will award a classroom prize to teachers who attend the race and walk alongside their students. “Some kids might not typically run or enjoy sports,” said Ausel. “But if a teacher says, ‘I’m gonna be there. I’ll walk with you’ - that’s huge.” T he communit y has already begun to rally
around the Kevin Regan Memorial Run as it did in the old days; attendance more than tripled in 2025, and the event produced more than 300 nonperishable food donations for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Every year, as young students lace up their sneakers to compete for the first time, former Solanco cross- countr y all-stars attend the event to show their support and encourage the next generation of runners. “I think what’s neat about the Kevin Regan Memorial Run is how long it’s been around,” said Ausel. “You hear parents telling their kids about how they ran this race when they were young. It’s so cool to see people come together to support this community - and remember when we ran the streets of Quarryville.”

Development of the hands-on exhibit area is still underway, and the Science Factor y antici p ate s i n s t a l l at i o n i n early 2027. This exhibit re pres ent s a par tnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to adapt the Pittsburgh institution’s travelling e x h i b i t , H o w Pe o p l e Make T hings, for permanent installation at the Science Factory. The exhibit teaches students about introductory prin-
ciples of manufacturing through the concepts of cut, mold, deform, and assemble. These projects are part of a larger, multiyear exhibit refurbishment at the Science Factor y, where 40% of all exhibits were installed when the organization first opened its doors in 2008. To date, $570,000 has been raised toward an estimated project budget of $750,000. Future improvements will feature updates to the Bubble Z one , the Water L a b, and additional exhibit areas.

used for its school year programming rather than the capital campaign for renovations. Solid Rock’s free programming, which serves more than 400 students throughout the school year, includes off- site after-school elementary programs and youth group-esque middle and high school programs in the evenings. Solid Rock also runs programming for homeschooled youths on Mondays. “I love that we are able to be a space for students to come, that they can build relationships with other students, with volunteers, and learn about Jesus,” Nixon said. “I love that Solid Rock is able to be a safe space for families.” The ministry is searching for volunteers who are interested in assisting with fall programming. The day will start with coffee and pastries from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. - with one of each included with registration - as well as networking and a kickoff presentation. Led by KJ Myers and Jordan Tyson of Next Generation of Lancaster, the kickoff will cover building genuine relationships, embracing collaboration, and more. Attendees will then attend their first two workshops, followed by approximately
45 minutes for networking. After that, they will head into the final workshop of the day. The conference will feature the following speakers: Eric Hoke, Karl Diffenderfer, Ryan Berardi, Jocelyn Engle, and Rocky Lalvani. A lunch buffet is included with registration and will be served from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. Following lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to connect directly with the speakers during informal roundtable discussions. Attendees are encouraged to connect with any of the speakers, regardless of which workshops they selected.
The roundtables will also feature two local professionals with experience in AI best practices and implementation: Philip D. Mann and Ken Richard. This portion will provide attendees an opportunity to ask questions, discuss real-world applications, and learn how businesses are incorporating AI into their work. Help the Fight Plans Fundraiser Help the Fight will host its 17th annual Main Event Benefit and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. T he event will take place at Spooky Nook Meetings & Events, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The organization’s signature fundraising event brings together local businesses, community members, breast cancer survivors, patients, families, and supporters for an event dedicated to making a difference in the lives of local individuals facing breast cancer, along with their families. beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Main Event serves as Help the Fight’s largest annual fundraiser and plays an impor tant role in sustaining the organization’s mission of ensuring that no one in the community faces breast cancer alone. Every dollar raised stays within L ancaster Count y and surrounding communities, helping patients with expenses such as mortgage or rent payments, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance premiums, child care, medical costs, and other essential needs during treatment. Mennonite Life will host its annual Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The event allows visitors to explore the Indigenous and European traditions that helped shape Lancaster County. Throughout the day, artisans and interpreters will demonstrate 18th-century crafts and activities associated with both European settlers and the Indigenous people around the Pequea and Conestoga valleys. Visitors may experience apple butter making, blacksmithing demonstrations, Indigenous stor ytelling and foodways, a hymn sing, and other historic crafts. The festival will also offer
visitors the opportunity to tour the historic 1719 Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse and to view a Conestoga wagon. Members of the Pennsylvania Native American Flute Circle will perform. Children may enjoy games, crafts, and a scavenger hunt with prizes. The admission fee will be discounted for youths ages 6 to 16, with complimentary admission for children age 5 and under.
