If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning, AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments.

“This is one of my favorite events that we do,” she said. “It’s a nice day just to come out and bring your kids and your dog. There’s something for everyone, and at the same time, you’re helping a great cause.” Participating animal rescues will include Angie’s Stray Foundation, Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, LaMancha Animal Rescue, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue and Wagon Tailz Animal Rescue. Attendees can get up close and personal with adoptable pets at a “doggie kissing booth.” “For me, the best part is seeing a person connect with an adoptable pet,” said Casson, who has a rescue dog of her own. “That’s so cool.” Several animal-related nonprofits, including Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, Leo’s Helping Paws and Woerth It Hollow, will also be on-site. Requested items also include horse halters, leads and treats, along with cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, paper towels, trash bags and gently used towels. Community members typically donate enough items to fill a flatbed truck, Casson said. Britain Hill divides the donations, as well as the proceeds from the event, among the participating rescue groups and nonprofit organizations. “Not everyone is in the position to adopt a pet right now, but you can still do your part,” she said. “Bring in your old towels, or buy something from our vendors. There are a lot of different ways you can help.” While Casson loves the event itself, she said the best moments of all come even later, when families who adopted a dog at Whiskers, Wags and Wine return to visit the venue with their new pet. WOW programs can be one-time sessions or multi-week initiatives, depending on the topic. The program is self-funded through grants and proceeds from Goodwill retail stores. Recently, Sen. James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. Outdoor from pg 5 hiking trails across Pennsylvania while promoting responsible use of the state’s natural resources. “If you’ve been hiking for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve walked down a trail that Keystone Trails Association has helped maintain,” Prisby said. “If you’re new to hiking, we love welcoming folks out on trails with us and helping people find others to get outside with.” Adding a fourth day to the event this year offers participants an opportunity to come early and take part in hands-on stewardship events or spend a night backpacking on the Mason-Dixon Trail. People are invited to come for one or all four days of the festivities, and about half of the activities are appropriate for families with children. Details of each activity note if the event is good for children, accessible or dog friendly, Prisby said. Registration is required for all events, and she noted that events fill up quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
