Quest for Learning Keeps Hearts Young, Minds Sharp BY JEFF FALK
There are few things more invigorating, more inspirational, more exhilarating than sharing interests with like-minded people. Unless, of course, that shared interest involves learning. “These are people who just have always had a knack for learning new things and reading books,” said Diane Carroll, who’s been Quest for Learning Lancaster’s board president for eight years. “They’re maybe a little nerdish. For senior citizens, almost everything they can do to keep the brain active is a really important part of aging well. There’s also a business of meeting up with people, and their concern for each other. There’s a whole gamut of socializing that goes on.” Quest for Learning Lancaster is all about education and fellowship. Designed for but not limited to older adults, Quest for Learning Lancaster is gearing up for another series of informative classes at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. The courses will offer four 50-minute classes - with time for questions and discussion at the end - on a variety of different topics at both 9:40 and 11 a.m. on six consecutive Thursdays, beginning Sept. 24. They’re listening, and, I hope, learning.” Quest for Learning Lancaster classes employ spoken lectures, some reading and visual aids to present the subject materials. There are no grades, tests or homework. Among the most popular of the rotating topics are music, history, film and baseball, but there are also classes focusing on coffee, trees, writing, science and worldviews. “No matter what it is that you’re looking for, whether it’s challenging topics or knowledge, you can find it at Quest,” said Carroll, a resident of southern Lancaster County. “People just love the camaraderie and the education. In connection with Hunger Action Month, September, the Giant Company - known locally as Giant and Martin’s - will undertake several donation, volunteer, and awareness activities throughout the month to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Established by the Feeding America network of food banks in 2007, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America. The company announced it would donate $400,000 to 24 food bank partners across its four-state operating area. The classes are led and taught by 30 volunteer i n s t r uc to rs , i nc l ud i n g former and current professors, lawyers, industry experts and community leaders. “I’m always a little disappointed when I ask people if they have ever heard of Quest and they haven’t,” said Carroll. “ We have really tried to work hard on getting the word out. I think everybody deserves to know about it. It’s a great opportunity.” Quest for Learning Lan-
caster was established in 1976 and has spent the last 49 years of its existence at the accommodating Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. “When it was first started, local ministers became interested in this format,” said Carroll. “They were impressed by the number of people who attended. It was initially held at First Presbyterian Church, but it was so small of a venue that it had to be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church, and it’s been there ever since. The organizers of t h e S o l a nco Fa i r h ave announced that Brette Dawley will sing the national anthem at the fair on Thursday, Sept. 17, and Kennedy Kreider will sing the anthem on Friday, Sept. 18. The performances will take place at 5 p.m. Brette has been singing since she was 11 years old. She has performed in three full-length shows, pl ay ing Mrs . Glo op in “Willy Wonka Jr.,” Sky the Girl Scout in “Beetlejuice Jr.,” and Miss Hannigan in “Annie Jr.” S he has p e r fo r m e d a t S o l a n c o Swift Middle School twice and at Street Lamp Productions once. Brette has taken acting class at the YMCA and dancing and a singing class at the Fulton T heatre. S he has been taking vocal lessons for one year. Kennedy, 10, is in fifth grade and lives on her family ’s d air y far m in Quar r y ville. S he takes vocal lessons with the Wieand Vocal Studio and sings in the praise team at Mechanic Grove Church, where she is a member. Her hobbies also include playing the saxophone and raising dairy beef for 4-H. Her favorite parts of the fair are eating the food and showing in the youth livestock show. For Deb, a library has always represented opportunity. After moving to a new home as a teenager, she re ceive d her f irst library card at the Oxford Library - a moment she credits with opening the world to her and inspiring a lifelong love of reading, learning, and travel. That passion has remained with her throughout her life. Deb served for 24 years in the Navy, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees while stationed
at locations throughout the United States, Italy, England, and Japan. During her military career, she met Chris while both were stationed at a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) air base in Sicily. Chris, a Colorado native, joined the Navy in 1976. “I just felt the Lord leading me to a new adventure,” he said. “It’s our 86th year (at WFCS). Great heritage, great legacy in the community. They’re looking to grow the school and just continually improve and pursue excellence.” Previously, the school’s principal handled all the position’s administrative duties, along with the fundraising elements required for being a private institution. Now, the role has been divided in half. Heather Furlong most recently served in the principal role, having resigned over the summer. “The head of school role is really to connect with the community, look to grow the school organizationally and in excellence. Just continue to make Christian education accessible to as many families as possible,” Jonathan said. The principal kind of focuses on the day-to-day academics and operations, working with teachers and our parents.” “ T he head of school position represents the first step in implementing a new leadership structure for our school,” said Bradley Marshall, president of the WFCS board of trustees. “Rather than asking one person to oversee every aspect of school leadership, we are moving toward a model that divides responsibilities between two complementary roles: a head of school and a principal. Together, these roles are designed to strengthen our ability to serve students, families and staff while positioning the school for

Jo n a t h a n ’s father was also an administrator at a Christian school and was the president of the Mid-Atlantic Christian Schools Association (MACSA), of which WFCS is a member. Jonathan has an undergraduate degree in English from Liberty University and a master’s degree in school leadership and administration from Cairn University. “I was reading up on the history of the school before I came,” he said. “Back in the ’90s, they had put together a 50th anniversary booklet. I was reading through that, and my dad was actually mentioned because they said they had gone to a MACSA convention over in Lancaster.” Jennifer White slides into the principal role. Originally a two-room schoolhouse, WFCS has expanded greatly over the past eight decades. The school originally served grades one through eight and now offers preschool through 12th-grade education for the first time this

school year. WFCS enrollment has greatly expanded over the last half-decade. It enrolls over 180 students this fall. The new building project includes five new classrooms, four of which are on the new second floor of the school’s existing academic building. It also includes a facilitator planning space, testing rooms and a mezzanine that is intended to serve as an event and collaborative learning space. “Much of the construction is completed,” Jonathan said. “ We’re still (putting) finishing touches on the elevator; some of the final painting and final finishing elements; getting our certification of occupancy; and making sure that the security and the fire alarms, some of the electrical elements, TVs and projectors and things (work).” As part of the Growing Together Capital Cam-
paign, the school projected that a total of $850,000 was needed for the project. Currently, around $500,000 of that has been collected. O ne bi g f u ndraising event for the school is its annual auction, the 45th edition of which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10. WFCS, founded in 1941, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville- Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available. The school is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, adjacent to Octorara Area School District’s primary campus. Walk and Run to Raise Funds Lancaster Bible College’s homecoming and family weekend will include the second annual Bethany Walk in Love Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the college’s campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The family-friendly fundraising event, benefiting the Safe Families program, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a time of gathering and prayer before the 10 a.m. walk and run. A toddler race and the presentation of awards recognizing the top individual and team fundraisers are also part of the morning lineup. Those participating in the event may stay on LBC’s campus to enjoy food trucks, games and kids’ activities, a car show, sports games, and more. Walk and run registration includes a race T-shirt and bib number. Race materials will be distributed on the morning of the event, so participants should plan to arrive early. Runners may sign up in person until noon on the day of the race as well. Safe Families works to
keep children safe and families together in Pennsylvania. Participants in the Bethany Walk in Love Walk/ Run will aim to raise awareness of and provide support for families facing challenges like poverty, homelessness, and health issues.
