While serving as Solanco Fair parade chairperson in 1997, Jeff Minnich started the tradition of having a grand marshal and theme for the annual event.
Things have come full circle.
With Minnich stepping down from that post this year, the Solanco Fair Association elected to honor him with the role of leading the 2-mile march through Quarryville Borough on Wednesday, Sept. 17, the opening night of the parade.
“Jeff has worked behind the scenes for many years making sure we have a parade that runs like a well-oiled machine,” Solanco Fair president Brad Davis said. “He has spent countless hours sending out registrations, taking phone calls from people that have questions about the parade, and making sure everyone is in their place the night of the parade. This is not counting all the other things that he does
that people don’t see. For so many years, Jeff has been behind the scenes, and we as the

It was groundbreaking, figuratively speaking.
No dirt was disturbed during Solid Rock Youth Ministries’ groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 18, but the event did signal the beginning of a bright future for the nonprofit organization.
The permitting process is continuing, and work is expected to get underway in September on Solid Rock’s new home at 104 E. State St., Quarryville.
“It’s starting our next chapter of renovation,” executive director Raeanne Nixon said. “We’re renovating the first floor of the youth center, which was an old car garage. We are going to have different rooms. We’re going to have a multipurpose room, where the kids can run around and play dodgeball and then be able to do family meals in there. We’re also going to have a café area where we can provide snacks and meals for the students when they come to Solid Rock. We’ll have a kitchen also going in the first floor, and we’ll have a conference room and a community room where parents come in.”

Boy Scout/Cub Scout Troop 87 will benefit from a community meal which will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville.
The meal is free; donations will be accepted with the proceeds going to the Scouts.
The menu will consist of lasagna, salad, bread, dessert, and beverages.
For more information, call 717-786-3402.
Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church holds a community meal every other month with the
The cost of renovating the entire building will be approximately $2.3 million, which includes the second floor. It will cost about $1.7 million for the first floor, and Solid Rock has already raised more than $1 million.
Anyone wishing to contribute can go to www.solidrockquarry ville.com/same-rock.

proceeds benefiting a local organization.
“The whole idea is to provide a meal free or whatever people can pay for the community,” said Boni Henry, who helps organize the meals. “Because I work at the food bank, I know there’s a lot of people out there that just can’t afford much, so they come to this meal and there’s no fee, but if they want to give a donation, they can, and we always donate the money to some cause. This time it’s
the Boy Scouts.”
Members of Middle Octorara’s congregation chip in to make the meals a success. “We just get volunteers from church to help prepare and serve and clean up,” said Henry. “The Boy Scouts are going to help clean up. That’s going to be their job.”
Scout Troop 87 meets Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. The troop has been meeting there since the mid ’90s. “In recent years Scouting has become more of a family affair, and now girls can be in the Boy Scout troops,” Scoutmaster Chris Sharp said. Anyone in kindergarten through grade 12 is welcome to join. “It’s a safe, welcoming place for all students,” Sharp said.
All Scouts work toward the goal of earning Merit Badges. To obtain an Eagle Scout award, the student must complete 22 merit badges. One of the merit badges a Scout can earn is cooking. In addition, there are numerous other badges that can be completed. “Scouting provides many outdoor activities which promotes the members many valuable experiences away from video games,” said Sharp, who is assisted by Terry Billings. “Scouting provides students with quality activities that provide a well-rounded curriculum.

hockey games.
Community service projects include collecting items for the food bank at Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, helping at the Scottish Covenanter Festival, participating in Wreaths Across America, operating a s’mores station at Christmas in Quarryville, and performing flag retirement ceremonies.
For fundraisers, the Scouts sell popcorn and make fastnachts the last Tuesday before Lent to offset the cost of summer camp.
The troop will hold a signup promotion Monday, Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m.
“Because of the concern about mental health issues, we feel that Scouting fills that void by providing a fun adventure, building skills, and at the same time, developing well-rounded individuals,” Sharp said. “In general, Scouting provides a fun context where character development can take place.”

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold the group’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. A presentation by CPRS Physical Therapy and refreshments will follow the meeting.
Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.
Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the benefit of area senior citizens age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips. Four baking contests will return to the Solanco Fair this year - the Apple Pie, Angel Food Cake, Chocolate Cake, and youth-only Cookies, Brownies, and Bars competitions. All contests are open to Pennsylvania residents.
The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest requires at least 60% of the pie filling to be apples, and it is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF).
The INCREDIBLE! Angel Food Cake contest is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania’s Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Bakers are asked to use eggs produced and packed in Pennsylvania
if possible; they should look for the PEQAP or Pennsylvania packaging dates on the carton.
The Homemade Chocolate Cake contest is sponsored by the PSACF. The entry must be a layered chocolate cake and must be frosted. Both the cake and the icing must be made from scratch, and the cake must feature chocolate or cocoa as the main ingredient.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program sponsors the Cookies, Brownies, and Bars contest. The goal of this contest is to encourage young people across the commonwealth
to participate in Pennsylvania’s agricultural fairs by showcasing locally grown and produced products in their contest entries. All participants must be between the ages of 8 and 18. Each entry must include two PA Preferred ingredients; they must be clearly labeled on the recipe, but the packaging labels do not need to be included.
All baking contests require that recipes - listing all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions - be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of 8.5-by-11-inch paper. On the back side of the recipe, the entrant’s See Baking pg 5

2023 and pay off the mortgage this year and be able to raise half of the first floor of renovations,” said Nixon. “That was something that the board wanted us to do, so it’s just incredible how the Lord is working it all out. We’re just really excited.”
State Sen. Scott Martin and State Rep. Bryan Cutler were two of the speakers during the groundbreak -
ing ceremony. Martin cited Solid Rock’s “real deep commitment to the community” and added that, “when it’s rooted in faith, it is that much more powerful.”
Cutler said, “Thank you for what you’ve done, and thank you for what you’re going to do in the future.”
Solid Rock student Jose Rodriguez stated that the building is “a place we can call home right in the middle of town.”
Solid Rock Youth Ministries serves students in the Solanco area during the school year and over the summer by providing programs, activities, and family events. Solid Rock served over 400 students last year and needed additional room.
“We’re really excited about this space,” said Nixon. “Solid Rock started 28 years ago, and we’re excited to continue reaching students with the
Gospel.”
All the programs are free, thanks to support from community members, churches, and businesses.
“We’re celebrating God’s faithfulness to Solid Rock over decades,” said board
chair Chris Kuhn. “We’re just so grateful for our community, for our supporters. and that we just get to expand and grow and just follow God and what He’s doing in the community.”

establish permanent funds to support the community by making grant investments to local organizations. Today, the
Fair board members like to joke that this is the type of thing that can happen when you miss a meeting. When Minnich did not attend the April meeting, Trudy Grove, his successor as parade chairperson, nominated him to be the grand marshal.
“I said, ‘Look, guys, that’s a great honor, but I’m not sure that this would be the appropriate year, because I really want this to stick with changing to Trudy,’” Minnich said. “I don’t want to stick her this early in the changeover. Then I paused and realized it’s the same language I’ve got when I’ve called people to be the grand marshal.”
This year’s theme is “A Journey Through Solanco’s Past.” “It seems appropriate as I’m telling my story of journeying through the past of my parade chairmanship as it’s coming to
an end,” Minnich said. Minnich came up with the idea to have a grand marshal to honor people who work behind the scenes. “When people ask what I’m most proud of working with the fair association, I say it’s being able to honor people in front of the largest community gathering of the year,” he said.
John Hoffman was the first grand marshal. Hoffman, who donated the funds for the first building on the fairgrounds which bears his name, was Minnich’s Sunday school teacher and paid students to carry banners in the parade.
Organizing the parade is a time-consuming process. “The parade only happens once a year, but it is a commitment for the entire year,” said Minnich, who is an entrepreneur. Employees
of his businesses have helped through the years. Being able to email people instead of sending out letters has eased the burden a bit.
Minnich fondly recalls the days of bringing in mascots such as the Phillie Phanatic to interact with the crowd during the event. Minnich and his wife, Bonnie, allowed the people in the mascot outfits to use their home to change. Then after the parade, Bonnie whipped up a meal, and the visitors were able to cool off in the pool. “I’m hoping some of the families in the area can say, ‘Hey, I remember when the Phillie Phanatic came to the fair,’” he said.
Minnich said he will likely feel a mixed bag of emotions with an estimated 15,000 people lining the streets for the parade. “I think it will hit me when I’m going down the parade route when it’s just about ready to start, and I’m sure I’m going to have butterflies that hold back the tears,” he said.
Two prior attempts to retire as parade chairperson didn’t stick when he was called back into service, but Minnich is confident in Grove and ready to step aside for good.
“All the other people I called to tell them they had earned the honor of being the grand marshal said, ‘I am still able to help. Don’t put me out to pasture,’” he said. “I’m probably saying, ‘Yeah, put me out to pasture.’”
One year, the person dressed as the Philadelphia Eagles’ mascot, Swoop, sent the Minnichs a thank you note that read in part, “I’d also like to thank you for hospitality by inviting us to your home and treating us like family.”

Guild members Karen Keller-Eyer and Nancy Landis will be at Herb Fest. Keller-Eyer and Landis are the only charter members still in the group, which was initially an offshoot of a guild on the other side of Lancaster. Keller-Eyer attended the group’s first meeting in October 1982 after her in-laws saw a notice in a newspaper.
In the early days, the Conestoga Herb Guild had
fewer than 15 members and met at each other’s homes. “I joined when I was engaged to be married, and I wanted to do herbal things for my weddings,” Keller-Eyer said. “I joined with a friend Barbara that I worked with, and she and I did herbal things for my wedding. The guild has a lot of different people with a lot of different interests.

I always sort of gravitated to wreath-making, and tussie mussies was my thing. Some people are more interested in the culinary herbs or the medicinal herbs, and everybody sort of took their interests, and we shared that knowledge.”
Landis became aware of the guild through word of mouth. “I had heard about the guild through a friend of mine, and I went to the one of the original meetings,” she said. “I was always interested in herbs, so I was very happy to find a group of people who I could discuss that with.”
Landis has been going to guild meetings for 43 years. “I’ve enjoyed the programs and drying herbs,” she said. “I enjoy making the sweet Annie wreaths. It’s very fragrant. I’ve enjoyed learning about all kinds of herbs.”
Landis has seen many changes. “In the ’80s, herbs were a kind of a new thing in Lancaster County,” she noted. “I had a friend who knew a lot about herbs, and I got interested. And now, of course, herbs are much more well known, but it’s nice when new people can come and just get excited about all the medicinal and culinary uses and other things you can do with herbs.”
During that time, the Conestoga Herb Guild has grown to 70 members. “It’s different because we meet at a public place, and there’s many more members, which means also we have more resources,
people who are interested and involved in different ways,” said Landis, who lives in East Lampeter Township. “There are pros and cons to having a small group or a large group, but I enjoy it now the way it is. It’s always nice to meet new people and hear their perspectives, and the members are quite involved with newsletters and different outreach programs, which is nice.”
The guild donates a book to the county library system when a member passes away and sends sympathy cards or a rosemary plant when someone in a member’s family passes.
Keller-Eyer and Landis stated that Herb Fest will be worth the trip.
“It’s about sharing time with the community, trying to increase our membership, and have people know about our existence,” said Keller-Eyer. “I’d encourage people to come if they have any interest in herbs, because our president, Susan Atkins, she’s very interested in medicinal herbs,” said Keller-Eyer, who lives in Penn Township. “She makes a lot of salves and that type of thing.”
Landis added, “If you come to the Herb Fest, I think you’ll see the wide range of uses for herbs and like the different people and their interest in herbs. There will be demonstrations and talks, which is very informative, and if you have an interest, I think it would be a good place to start.”

Quest for Learning is a nonprofit run entirely by volunteers that has offered educational programs to people of retirement age in Lancaster for almost 50 years. Sessions will be presented by local experts in their fields.
The eight programs that will be offered are “The 19th Annual Richard Keller Memorial Series”; “The Making of Film Classics,” presented by Millersville University faculty; a Short Story Discussion Group; “Lancaster African American History”; “Historical Trees of Lancaster County”; “Animal Behavior and Ecology: Timing, Place, and How We Know What We Know”; “Backstage With the Lancaster Symphony,” presented by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra staff, musicians, and community partners; and “An Archeological Quest to Understand New World Slavery.”
Two 50-minute sessions will take place each Thursday, one at 9:40 a.m. and one at 11 a.m., with a coffee and cookie break in between. There is a fee, which covers the cost of the entire series. For more information or to register, visit www.questlancaster.org.
