Middle Octorara Will Host Peach Fest T
o paraphrase a song called “Peaches” by the band The Presidents of the United States of America: Goin’ to the country, Gonna eat a lot of peaches I’m goin’ to the country, I’m gonna eat me a lot of peaches Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church is offering everyone the opportunity to do just that during its sixth annual Peach Fest. Peach Fest will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 4 p.m. at the church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The event is free; donations will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the church’s many charitable projects. Although the main attraction will be (you guessed it) peachthemed desserts, a light meal will also be served, featuring barbecue, hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, chips, pickles, and olives.

The new addition has about 24,000 square feet of space, roughly the same as the existing store. The addition, completed on July 22, has a new entrance with a carport
There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “We used ‘neighborhood’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. We all know how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support. “Our goal is to continue to get the word out so we can reach as many people as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.” Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an al l - vol u nte er or ganiz at ion designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central nervous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords. For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence. “Spinal cord injuries or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central nervous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country. The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free. The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19. Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the

infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship. Janson Field, a traditional baseball diamond built atop the borough’s former reser voir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throu g hout the 1920s and 1930s. He served during the early 20th century for 34 years and spent his retirement touring the U.S. and lecturing on his adventures and observations around the globe. The second and final phase, which will begin in August, will involve the demolition of the existing store and rebuilding it to connect to the new addition. This phase should be complete at some point in the late spring of 2027. Good’s Store will generally be open during normal business hours during the expansion project. “The current store building has deteriorated to the point that a replacement/ renovat ion is ne e de d ; simple repairs were no longer feasible,” said Zimmerman. “We have long wanted to expand the store size and were finally able to do so. One of LKC ’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans ’ rel ationships with canines. “ I f yo u h av e a g o o d bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC ’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.” LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, Febr uar y and A pr il at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public. “Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of oppor tunities to do things with dogs.” More than 85 dues-paying memb ers make up the L ancaster Kennel Club, which is governed by a code of ethics. They are owners, breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs and, for the most part, L ancaster County residents. There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by LKC members. “They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.” Martin shares his Center v ille-area home with two Nor wich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis. “ T hey ’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.” A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921. “In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. CAP Squadron Relocates The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has announced that it will relocate to Alliance Aviation within the terminal of the Lancaster Airport in Lititz beginning in August. The squadron’s meetings will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which represents a change from the previous schedule. The new location will provide a larger meeting space as well as a professional environment for cadet and senior member development. It will suppor t all three of C AP’s chartered missions: cadet programs, emergenc y ser vices, and aerospace education. Cadet programs include leadership development, physical fitness, and character development for yo u t h s a ge s 1 2 to 18. Emergency ser vices include training for search and rescue, disaster relie f, communications, and also mission support training for qualified members. Aerospace education includes STEM instruction, learning about aviation, and an aerospace curriculum for cadets and senior members. C AP also provides additional oppor tunities, such as flight training, encampments, and national special activities. The relocation was made possible through the continued support and partnership of airport manager Ed Foster. The squadron remains committed to serving Lancaster County throu g h volunte er ing , youth development, and mission readiness. Giant will also serve as the first cornerstone partner of the newly renovated West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium at Penn State University. As the first cornerstone partner of the renovated venue, Giant will have a custom gate sponsorship at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, which will be enhanced for the debut of the completed renovation in the fall of 2027. Historic Rock Ford, 8 8 1 R o c k fo rd R o a d , Lancaster, will host an 18th-Century Historic Fashion Symposium on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will consist of three lectures; a self-guided tour of the General Hand Mansion, including the opportunity to see the 18th-century gown owned by Katharine Hand; and a catered dinner by Gourmet Julie’s Way, with gluten-free and vegetarian options available. The lectures will be held in the Langmuir Education Room, located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. The symposium is open to people with all levels of experience in historical dress. The presenters and their lectures will be C h r i s t i n a Mc S h e r r y, “Katharine Hand: Discovering a Person Through Clothing”; Angela Burnley, “From Cottage to Factory: The Evolution of Textiles for Fashion in the Last Quarter of the 18th Century”; Brooke Welborn, “Cutting to the Figure: The Evolution of Mantua-Making in the Last Quarter of the 18th Century.” McSherry is executive director of Historic Rock Ford and an adjunct professor of anthropology at Franklin & Marshall College. She has a Ph.D. in archaeology from the University of Nevada, Reno. Burnley holds a Bachelor of Science in interior design from the University of Cincinnati. Prior to founding Burnley & Trowbridge in 1994, she owned a multi-discipline design firm in Oyster Bay, N.Y., and taught as an adjunct in the discipline at the New York Institute of Technology. Her strong interest in historic textiles for interiors and her love of sewing led her down the path of historic textile discovery within the fashion world. She has spearheaded the many offerings of Burnley & Trowbridge, from products to hands-on and online workshops, all while pursuing her personal research in 18th-century textiles. Welborn received a Bachelor of Arts in theater from William & Mary, with a focus on costume
