But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun. “Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these
young people don’t get out as much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.” Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. In 2013, community members and Quarryville Lions Club president Joanne Black, who was serving her first term at the time, noticed the pillars’ need for restoration, and Black approached the borough and other members of the club’s leadership to devise a plan.

After contacting Quarryville Borough and Lions Club leaders, Black spearheaded a project to repair the memorial pillars. The project entailed the restoration of the cement between the pillars’ stones that had eroded. Unforeseen complications such as extensive water damage drastically increased the project’s initial cost, but it was finally completed in time to be rededicated on Memorial Day in 2013. Several local organizations and businesses also donated benches for the renovation, and Quarryville Borough completed The project will entail the addition of six military branch flags around
