Dance School Announces Milestone, New Owner

Debbie’s School of Dance in Quarryville has announced that it is celebrating 50 years in business. In addition, founder Debbie Shrom transferred ownership of the studio to her daughter Tiffany Shrom in the spring of 2025.

“I have watched my mom build her dance community for 28 years, and I am excited to step into her role with hopes to run the business for another 50. In the best way, she is a tough act to follow,” noted Tiffany.

Debbie founded the school in 1976 at the age of 19, operating out of her parents’ basement with three students. Today, the school has its own facility, serves more than 100 dancers, and supports four competition teams. Debbie made the

decision to pass on the studio after recovering from a serious illness that required several weeks of hospitalization.

“It is a dream come true to see Debbie’s School of Dance continue moving forward under my daughter’s talented leadership in dance and choreography,” Debbie said.

Debbie has been a part of the dance world for many years. In the 1970s, she performed in “Carnival” and “Funny Girl” at the Fulton Theatre. She has also studied in New York City with jazz dance legend Gus Giordano.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Tiffany obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance with a concentration in performance and choreography from Slippery Rock University. She is currently

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) is amidst a “Growing Together Capital Campaign” that is aimed at raising money for a renovation and expansion project at the school.

Located at 795 Fallowfield Road in Atglen, adjacent to Octorara Area School District’s primary campus, renovations are already underway. The school projects that a total of $850,000 is needed for the project; $500,000 has been raised to date.

In the developmental world of nonprofits, the Lancaster Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (LHCC) is in its infancy; it’s a newborn. But in a short period of time, LHCC has laid a stable foundation upon which growth can be nurtured.

Essential for continued maturation are public awareness and community support. Once it does blossom, LHCC will connect resources to those in need, unlock the economic potential of the local Latino community and make Lancaster County a better place to live.

“It’s in its baby stages, but people are beginning to reach out,” said Esther DeWoody, the founder and president of LHCC. “The mission is to reach the Latino business owners and educate members of the Latino community about the community resources available to them, so they can do better in education and financially. We want Latino business owners to know that it’s possible, that they can do it. People are willing to go the extra mile to welcome the Latino community and work with them.”

After putting thoughts into motion in April of 2025 and launching the organization’s website in November, DeWoody formally founded LHCC in March of this year. DeWoody is currently operating the fledgling organization from her Manheim Township home but hopes to move into a more permanent brick-and-mortar office by the end of this summer and then eventually add staff.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group recently announced the names of 12 more Lancaster County organizations that have been awarded its “Green Project” Grants. The announcement was made as part of the Sierra Club’s celebration of Earth Day, April 22.

Each of the recipient organizations, in submitted proposals, explained a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, each for up to $500, a total of 122 Lancaster County organizations have received Green Grants from the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past 12 years.

“We have to unite,” she added. “We have to want to make things better as a community, and not just Latinos. Everybody sees the need for this. It’s something people have been looking for.”

Part of LHCC’s immediate future is a culturally based, Latino-themed event in Lancaster city on Friday, June 5. Though some of the details are still being finalized, LHCC has already secured sponsorships for the event.

In addition, LHCC is also planning a community outreach gathering in August.

“My favorite part is that (LHCC) will help people in the Latino community,” said DeWoody. “This will better their lives because of the resources they don’t know exist. The only requirement for membership is that you have to be able to give back to the community in some way. I want people to work together as a family. I don’t want them to look at each other as members; I want them to look at each other as

family members.”

As part of its organizing, LHCC has been working with similar organizations, like the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, LHCC counts 25 individuals as part of its membership.

“They’re leaders who can be mentors and who can be teachers,” said DeWoody. “They’re strong leaders from Lancaster County who are willing to work with the community, and they don’t have to be Latinos.”

According to census data, more than 65,000

Latinos reside in Lancaster County, and Hispanics represent about 12% of the county’s total population. The highest concentration of Latinos resides in the city, where they make up about 40% of Lancaster’s population.

Data about the number of Latino-owned businesses in Lancaster County is less clear.

“I feel like there are voices that aren’t at the table, and I want to be their voice,” said DeWoody. “I want to elevate their voices. It’s about community opportunities for our community. I want to build something where people feel supported and where they can grow together. I want people lifting each other up. There are big organizations out there who are helping the community, and I think we can work better together.

“I want to be a bridge between systems,” continued DeWoody. “I ask people, ‘What do you need? What is the community looking for?’ I ask people, ‘How can I help you?’”

“We’re very proud people,” said DeWoody. “We’re very into our culture. You have to look at each of us as from different cultures, and we’re all very proud of our cultures. Summer Concert Series Posted

The Quarryville Lions Club will host the Huffnagle Park Concert Series throughout the summer at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville.

The series will begin with a performance by Nate Myers and the Aces, a roots and blues band, on Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m. Led by Nate Myers and his harmonica, the group has five albums and has been a central Pennsylvania fixture for more than 20 years.

Other concerts will feature the Malta Community Band on Saturday, June 27; Tanner Bingaman on Saturday, July 25; Street Lamp Productions on Saturday, Aug. 1; and The

Nottingham Four on Saturday, Aug. 8. The concerts will start at 7 p.m.

Organization Seeks Donations, Volunteers

Community Clearinghouse Agency Inc. is starting a new program to serve senior citizens in the Lancaster area. Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor

Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet” are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $500.

Originally a two-room schoolhouse, WFCS has greatly expanded over the past eight decades. The school originally served grades one through eight, now serves preschool through 11th grade, and plans to offer a full high school with the completion of the expansion project, which is hoped to be completed by the start of the upcoming school year.

“Our student body has steadily increased,” said WFCS principal Heather Furlong. “We saw a little pause with COVID ... five years ago we had 110 students. Now, we’re over 180.”

The renovations will take place on the second floor of the school’s additional building, which was constructed in 2006. The new project will include five new classrooms, a facilitator planning space, testing rooms and a mezzanine that is intended to serve as an event and collaboration learning space.

Completed items on the new project include the installation of a staircase, electric work and some plumbing. Steel framing is also in place, outlining the future classrooms.

“It’ll really hit the ground running for the physical build once the school year is complete,” Furlong said. “We’re doing a big push right now for the finances to finish.”

Aside from the capital

campaign, the school is set to host its annual chicken barbecue fundraiser on Wednesday, June 17, from noon to 6 p.m. Along with the chicken, purchase of a meal includes applesauce, chips, macaroni salad, a drink and a dessert.

There will be a drivethrough on campus to pick up the meal; a picnic area will also be set up for those who want to stay and eat the meal together. Delivery is also available for businesses that order at least 10 meals; the deadline to order delivery is Friday, June 5.

Proceeds will not go toward the new building project but will instead be used for the school’s general operating budget to cover expenses such as utilities, payroll, and curriculum costs. This year’s barbecue will be the 59th in the school’s history.

Pedaling Toward Confidence and Growth

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.

Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.

“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director.

Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.

“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curriculum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”

While riders of any skill level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in

one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.

Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.

LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.

“LifeCycles is a great way to meet friends, grow and do something you probably already enjoy,” he remarked. “Come to improve your skills, see new parts of Lancaster County and beyond in a safe and positive environment.”

Memorial Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, will host a free community dinner on Saturday, May 30, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Donations will be accepted to benefit the food bank at Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.

They call themselves “Misfits.” But that is not a complete representation of who they are and what they are all about.

They could also call themselves “Supporters,” “Heroes” or “Sympathizers.”

“We are a group of people who have been impacted by cancer in some way, either as caregivers, survivors, or we have friends who have gone through the fight,” said Sharon Groff, the Misfits on a Mission team

captain. “When we started, most teams were affiliated with a school group, church group, a business or family members. We were a group of people who wanted to do something to give back in honor or in memory of loved ones. Thus, we were a bunch of misfits who had no affiliation, but were on a mission in the fight against cancer.”

Misfits on a Mission is an independent, six-member Relay for Life team that will be out in full force at Conestoga Valley High School

(CVHS), 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, June 12, from 3 to 11 p.m., when the American Cancer Society stages its popular local fight against cancer.

The volunteer-led, fundraising and awareness-raising Relay for Life brings people together from all over Lancaster County who have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer.

Lancaster County’s annual Relay for Life will feature local teams and individuals running or walking around CVHS’ track in support of loved

ones who have battled cancer and will include music, kids’ activities, food trucks, baked goods, crafters and auctions.

“The vibe at Relay is upbeat and fun. It’s a family event,” said Groff. “Everyone is welcome to attend; you do not have to be part of a team to come out and enjoy the activities. As evening sets in, the atmosphere does change with the luminaria service. Lanterns and luminarias are lit around the track in remembrance or in honor

of someone who has (battled) or is battling cancer.”

Misfits on a Mission is currently seeking community members, interested individuals or altruistic businesses to support its efforts at Relay for Life. The team is offering varying levels of sponsorship opportunities, donations which will be recognized with banners displayed at the event.

Association Receives Grant

The Manufacturers’ Association was selected as a recipient of a Pennsylvania Industry Partnership grant for $350,000. The grant was awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry as part of a statewide $2.8 million investment announced by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration on April 13. The Manufacturers’ Association has been awarded $350,000 to advance the South Central Manufacturing Industry Partnership, serving manufacturers and workers across Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.

Through the Manufacturing Industry Partnership, the Manufacturers’ Association will lead a comprehensive, employer-driven workforce strategy focused on five key areas. The association will seek to promote manufacturing careers to attract a strong, motivated, qualified, and diverse pool of candidates ready to enter and thrive in today’s manufacturing environment. It will also facilitate education and adoption of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to ensure regional manufacturers remain competitive in an evolving industrial landscape. Another key area is aggregating technical skills training so manufacturers may leverage cost efficiencies, deliver high-quality

training that is accessible to smaller manufacturers, and create clear career advancement pathways for workers. The association will also facilitate best practice peer learning and deepen supply chain collaboration across the southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing community.

Finally, the industry partnership will bring together organizations in economic development, education, industry, and workforce development, including the local workforce boards of SCPa Works and the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board.

The industry partnership model is built on the principle that employers, educators, workforce development organizations, economic development agencies, labor entities, and community partners are strongest when they work together. For more than 20 years, the Manufacturers’ Association has championed this collaborative approach, and the new grant enables the association to deepen those connections across the region.

The grant to the Manufacturers’ Association is one of 10 industry partnership grants. Shapiro has also proposed a $3.5 million increase in industry partnership funding in his 2026-27 budget, which would bring the total state investment to $6.3 million.

Solanco Announces Graduation Speaker

Tyler McCardell, a 2013 graduate of Solanco High School, has been named guest speaker for the Solanco Class of 2026 graduation.

McCardell is an EMS physician and clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. He provides countywide physician field response through the Penn-Med-1 program; coordinates prehospital education; and serves as the medical director for multiple EMS agencies, including Wakefield Ambulance and Pequea

Valley Fire Department.

McCardell graduated from Solanco as class president and co-valedictorian in 2013 before earning dual bachelor degrees from Duquesne University and continuing his education at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He is residency-trained in emergency medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he served as chief resident and assistant medical director for AHN LifeFlight, followed by an EMS Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

There’s something blue-collar - almost workmanlike, in a culinary sense - about consuming delicious food prepared in a truck. In that vein, a food truck festival seems like the perfect fundraiser for Occupational Development Center (ODC).

“The best thing about the festival is seeing people discover their new favorite foods and their new favorite food trucks,” said Ken Mueller, the public relations and development manager for ODC. “Some people know exactly which trucks they want to go to, while others will spend a lot of time trying something new, based on what they hear people saying about the different trucks as they walk around. It creates a real sense of community, with great food at the center of it all.”

ODC of Lancaster will host its eighth annual Food Truck Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Proceeds from the community event will benefit ODC, which supports Lancaster County adults with developmental disabilities through vocational training and employment opportunities, and the Manheim Township Recreation Department.

“This is our eighth year hosting this event, and we continue to be amazed by how much it grows each year,” said Gregg Richards, ODC’s executive director. “Many people arrive early and spend the day relaxing in the park while sampling food from a variety of trucks. We believe the new kid zone will give families even more reasons to attend and enjoy an extended day at the festival.”

The ODC Food Truck Fest will feature offerings from more than 17 area food trucks. Available for purchase will be ice cream; wood-fired pizza; Cambodian cuisine; fried shrimp, oysters, crab and pierogis; waffles and ice cream; gourmet cupcakes and fresh-squeezed lemonade; beef jerky and bacon on a stick; Caribbean/Latin American fusion; authentic Mexican cuisine; smoked meats, barbecue and mac and cheese; upscale American and healthy cuisine; Middle Eastern/European street food; cheesesteaks; gourmet doughnuts; coffee and specialty drinks; and prepackaged candy.

The food trucks are operated by owners from Lancaster, New Holland, Ephrata, Akron, Elizabethtown, Columbia, Lebanon, Hershey, York and Red Lion.

The ODC Food Truck Fest is being supported by more than eight generous sponsors.

“This is such a great event,” said Mueller. “Gathering so many people together around a love of food and fun is always a good thing. There’s always so much energy at this event, and it’s great to see so many people from around the county gathering together and having a good time.”

The festival’s atmosphere will be supplemented by music from DJs; a kid zone; a touch-a-truck experience featuring Manheim Township vehicles; photo opportunities; an obstacle course; a visit by the Lancaster Bookmobile; and games. More than 5,000 individuals are expected to attend.

The Biblical Tabernacle Experience is a reproduction of the tabernacle as described in the Hebrew Scriptures. The tabernacle is a valuable way to understand God’s relationship with God’s people throughout his -

tory, illuminating God’s desire to dwell among His people, to offer redemption for broken humanity through Emmanuel, and to show God’s kingdom breaking into the world today through the Holy Spirit.

Staff members will invite the group to examine the significance of the physical pieces of the Biblical Tabernacle and offer questions for contemplation. The service is open to all but is best suited for youths and adults.

Memorial Day Service Planned at Cemetery

The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will host the 158th Memorial Day service at Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, on Saturday, May 30, from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The service will be conducted at the Grand Army of the Republic’s soldiers’ burial plot, the final resting place for 206 men who served in the military forces of the United States during the American Civil War.

Lt. Gen. Dennis L. Benchoff will present the keynote remarks. The Gettysburg Independent Blues will serve as the honor guard.

The SUVCW is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of those who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, the SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in Lancaster ever since. “but we also draw from all over the county and beyond.”
