Perspectives on Memorial Day

Chief Warrant Officer 3 when he retired, was asked to speak at the upcoming Memorial Day Service at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), he agreed to do so because he knows perspectives on Memorial Day are not all the same.

“I feel that people’s views on what Memorial Day is about are different than (the views of) those who have been in the service,” Garver pointed out. “Having the opportunity to stand up front and give my perspective is why I am here.”

Garver will open the ceremony, which will begin in the old cemetery east of the church at 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, on Sunday, May 24, at 10 a.m.

On average, Americans spend 15 years and three months of their natural lives working, a total of some 90,000 hours.

For some people, a job is work. For some individuals, employment is a career.

PA CareerLink Lancaster County caters to both groups of people and helps individuals to navigate this critical portion of their lives.

“It depends on the individual,” said Chris Roggenbaum, who’s been the site administrator at PA CareerLink Lancaster County for three years. “Some people may say they have a job. For me, my job is part of my career. It’s part of my path. Some people are looking for jobs. A lot of times, people put their identities into whether they have a job or a career.”

On the surface, there is no obvious connection between medicine and music. That is, until you realize that music goes with anything, or everything.

Auscultation Brass is a collection of healing artists and a group of musical physicians.

“I think there’s a part in our brains that, when music hits our ears, it becomes very soothing,”

An arm of the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, PA CareerLink Lancaster County, which is located at 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, is a job center that provides locals opportunities to improve themselves financially, to enhance their lives and to selfactualize. “A lot of people come to us thinking we’re the unemployment office, but we are not,” said Roggenbaum. “Our goal is to get individuals back to work or further their skills for their current job. We’re here to help people enter or re-enter the local work force. There are a variety of ways to do that.”

said Dr. Jerry Rothacker, the scheduler and main contact for Auscultation Brass. “For years, when I did surgery, I didn’t allow music in the operating room. I didn’t want it to be a distraction. But at one point, I told my staff, ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to play classical music.’ What I found was that it wasn’t a distraction; it helped people concentrate.

“What I was listening to wasn’t what my staff was listening to when they were driving home,” he added. “That’s the beauty of music.”

Auscultation Brass is a Lancaster-based band made up of medical professionals - nurses and mostly doctors. Medicine is their profession, and music is their interest, but they are passionate about both.

“Auscultation means to listen,” said Rothacker, a retired orthopedic surgeon and a tuba-playing resident of East Hempfield. “It’s like a doctor listening to your lungs and heart with a stethoscope. That’s Auscultation. We had a little discussion when the band was first formed. Someone came up with Auscultation, and we said, ‘That’s it.’”

Auscultation Brass is directed by Dr. Bob Belser, an ear, nose and throat man, while Dr. Michael Chambers, a maxillofacial surgeon, plays the trombone and serves as the group’s musical librarian. Chambers is joined on the trombone by Dr. Marguerite Duane, a family doctor.

Dr. Tom Andersen, a retired family physician, plays the tuba.

Trumpet players include Dr. Dan Diehl, a retired family doctor; Dr. Andy Lutzkanin, a family physician; and Dr. Bill Roberts, a retired family doctor. Intensive Care Unit nurse Kirby Strohmaier plays the French horn, as does Dr. Bill Lovett, a practicing family doctor.

Those health professionals have practiced medicine in local hospitals like Lancaster General, performed as specialists at places like Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster or been on their own in private practices.

“I think some of the attraction is the discipline it takes to learn to play an instrument,” said

Holly Grube, a member of the Lebanon Valley College softball team, was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Player of the Week for the week ending April 5. Grube is a resident of New Providence.

Grube slashed .643/.600/1.357 with nine hits and six runs scored in a perfect 4-0 week. The sophomore also earned two wins in the pitching

circle, tallying four strikeouts in two starts. Grube helped lead LVC to the 2-1 win over Stevens on April 3, recording two hits with a solo home run and pitching a two-hitter with three strikeouts, without allowing an earned run in seven innings.

Grube, a graduate of Solanco High School, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in business administration.

Auscultation Brass specializes in the genres of classical, light classical, pop, marches and movie-themed music. Over the last four decades, the members have grown as musicians, the group has evolved as a band and Auscultation Brass’ library has ballooned to more than 300 pieces of music.

“When we first started, we had patients who would come to our performances,” said Rothacker. “It was kind of like, ‘Hey, this guy has a life outside of medicine.’ But the story is music. You can be a musician, enjoy music and not necessarily make it your field. The members in our band are really good musicians and really good doctors.”

“We try to practice once a week,” said Rothacker. “It’s been Sunday evenings for 40 years. At one time, that was the night that was the calmest, with medical emergencies and young kids. The thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to evolve. When we first started, it was fairly basic stuff. We’re on to some more difficult music, and we’ve been able to add members.”

salute by VFW Post 4480 members. Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 87 will take part, as will the Rev. John Barlow and Scott Tanguy. Tanguy will read a dedication to Revolutionary War veteran Capt. John Paxton, who is buried in the cemetery. Paxton led Company D, 2nd Battalion, York County Militia during the Revolution. He fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, where he was severely wounded. Paxton returned to run his gristmill and serve as an elder at MOPC. He raised six children, and Scott is a descendant.

Following the cemetery service, the gathering will move inside the church, where Robert A. Mowery; Lt. Col. Wesley Girvin, retired; and Garver will each speak. Mowery, a 1963 graduate of Solanco High School (SHS), was drafted in November of 1965. He completed basic training at Fort Gordon in Georgia in early 1966, and after advanced training at Fort Carson in Colorado, he was sent to Vietnam. Mowery spent 13 months stationed just outside Saigon, and he was honorably discharged in August of 1967 with a rank of SP-5. Mowery received the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, and Vietnam Campaign medal for his service. He is a member of Christiana American Legion Post 865. Mowery noted that he was hesitant when first asked to speak by event organizer Barry Girvin, but he agreed

to take part after thinking about his gratitude for his health and his MOPC family. “It’s an honor,” he stated. “It makes you feel good that you served your country.”

Wesley first joined the armed forces when he enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1981. Wesley holds degrees from Millersville University and George Mason University. He served for more than four decades, and during that time, he held positions as a NATO plans officer, strategic planner for Afghanistan-Pakistan, and infantry platoon leader. He also served in special operations command and civil affairs tactical support. Wesley was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2001 and to Afghanistan in

2002, and he took part in the Iraq Invasion in 2003. He returned to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2014, and he also worked at the Pentagon. Wesley received a number of medals and badges for his service, including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service medal,

Global War on Terrorism medals, NATO medal, and Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals.

According to his father, Barry, Wesley will talk about his uncle James Linton, who survived the Battle of the Bulge. “I think Wes’ theme will be about remembering our fallen comrades, and he will zero in on Linton,” said Barry. “A lot of people in the congregation will recognize that name.”

Garver, who grew up near Quarryville and graduated from SHS before enlisting with the Army in July 2003, was first stationed at Fort Myer in Virginia. He served in the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment as a rifleman, machine gunner, and team leader. He then served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy, before being deployed as a squad leader in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom VIII. Garver completed flight school at Fort Rucker in Alabama. Assigned to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, he joined the Joint Special Operations Aviation Command and became a special mission qualified

standardization pilot and operative with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion. During his two decades in the service, Garver earned the Meritorious Service, Aerial Achievement, Army Commendation, and Army Achievement medals, among other awards.

A similar Memorial Day event was held at MOPC in 2002. The event was organized by Richard Keene in coordination with a committee planning the 275th anniversary of the church. Barry was part of that committee, and he took on the task of organizing this year’s Memorial Day Service in anticipation of MOPC’s 300th anniversary in 2027. He noted that Garver was one of the Scouts who took part in the 2002 service, and that Scott is the son of MOPC pastor emeritus the Rev. Robert Tanguy, who gave the dedication to Paxton in 2002.

“I used to have a boss who told me, ‘Hey, a job or having a career is an important part of people’s identities,’” said Roggenbaum. “When you meet people for the first time, it’s not too far into

the conversation when you ask them, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

PA CareerLink collaborates with numerous Lancaster County employers, who can post current openings on the organization’s website free of charge. PA CareerLink also works with human service agencies, manufacturing agencies, staffing agencies and the Lancaster County Assistance Office. It has its finger on the pulse of the employment community.

“A lot of these people have lost their jobs or need some sort of assistance,” said Roggenbaum. “We have individuals looking for training. We have veterans or spouses of veterans who have relocated to the area. We have people with disabilities. It’s a variety of people in different phases of their career journeys, from first jobs to starting over.”

The current unemployment rate in Lancaster County stands at 3.3%, well below Pennsylvania’s rate of 4.3%. Among the top Lancaster employers are Lancaster General Hospital, Mutual Assistance Group, the county of Lancaster and Giant Food Stores.

“One of the things we’re proud of in Lancaster is that we have one of the

lowest unemployment rates in the state, and that’s consistent,” said Roggenbaum. “We’re usually below the state rate. Lancaster County is bustling. We have a lot going on here.”

The causes of unemployment are as varied as the types of employment available here.

“Some people are unemployed,” said Roggenbaum. “Companies significantly lay off, or factors cause ripple effects. It could be the field. Individuals may go from one warehouse to another. Sometimes transportation or child care are factors. Some of it is just lost jobs. Things like that do happen.”

PA CareerLink was established in Lancaster County in 2001; the site is one of the organization’s 66 locations in the state. More than 40 staff members work at PA CareerLink Lancaster

County, but they are not technically employed by PA CareerLink, which receives both federal and state funding.

Those staff members operate an on-site food pantry, collect blankets for those in need and volunteer

Quarryville Library Posts Activities

Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, has posted its upcoming programs.

The library will be closed on Saturday, May 23, in observance of Memorial Day.

Baby’s First Storytime, for children from birth to 17 months, will be offered on Tuesday, May 26, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Family Storytime, for children from birth to age 6 with a caregiver, will be offered on Wednesday, May 27, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

PA CareerLink Lancaster County will be at the library on May 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives can help community members with a job search, leveling up computer skills, writing a résumé, interview tips, career exploration, and more.

The Knitting and Crocheting Group will meet on Thursday, May 28, and is open to all interested knit-

ters, crocheters, and other needle or fabric crafters.

A local mobile chair masseuse will offer 20-minute chair massages to adults at the library on May 28. There is a suggested donation, which will be shared with the library.
