Yard Sale to Benefit Mission Work in Peru

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church,

1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will hold an indoor and outdoor yard sale on Saturday, April 18, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The indoor sale will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the outdoor sale will take place on Saturday, May 2. The items at the indoor sale will be donated by church members. People may reserve a 10-by-10foot space in the outdoor sale for a fee by calling 717-381-9947.

The indoor sale will feature dozens of tables filled with items, and the outdoor sale will include more than 20 vendors. Food will be available to purchase. Joyfully Made Fellowship, a ministry for people with special needs,

will be on-site for attendees to purchase items and learn more about the ministry.

At 1 p.m., most of the remaining items will be available for free.

The yard sale has been held

annually for more than 30 years. Proceeds from the yard sale will help support the church’s ongoing work along the Amazon River in Peru.

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church has been working with the people in that area since 2005 and has provided mosquito nets, water filtration systems, anti-parasite medicine, and many medical supplies. Several church members and friends have traveled to the Amazon to provide hands-on help and have held a Bible school in the village of Tamshiyacu. The goal of the mission work is to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ to the people of the Amazon. Those with questions may call the church at 717-786-3402 or Dan Henry at 717-381-9947.

Employment is not just about a paycheck. Jobs can affect our self-worth, our relationships and our confidence.

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 is in the education business, and at least two of its programs are specifically designed to prepare young people for the workforce.

“For these students, work is

especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years.

“For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, which is located at 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, sponsors four

Evolution of Agriculture Equipment Continues Locally

You can take the company out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the company.

Formerly known as New Holland Machine Company or Case New Holland, CNH has grown into a global conglomerate that its founders never could’ve imagined. But the company will always be linked to the New Holland areaits farming, its work ethic, its ingenuity.

“Here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of farms and a lot of farmers,” said Mark Lowery, the director of dealer development for CNH in North America. “Do people know our story? Certainly, people involved with agricultural production do. It goes back to, ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ The broader population in Lancaster County might not know the story. But there’s been a long history of agricultural production here.”

It’s a story of innovation, mergers and acquisitions and small-town values playing well on a world stage.

The roots of CNH can be traced to a New Holland barn 131 years ago and a gentleman named Abe Zimmerman. Today, CNH, which is headquartered in Great Britain, operates 40 plants around the world; employs a total of 35,000 workers; and generates in excess of $20 billion in global revenue.

“CNH is a global brand, but a lot of people don’t know it was originally named after a town in eastern Lancaster County,” said Lowery. “We owe a lot to this

local area and the innovations that made us a global brand.”

CNH still operates a location in its 6,000-resident hometown of New Holland, at 500 Diller Road. But thanks to advances in technology, the operation looks a lot different than it did a century ago.

CNH’s New Holland location is a 350-acre campus consisting of five buildings - an administration building, a technical center focusing on research, development and design, a building for combine field testing, a technical training center and a home for CNH industrial capital. The local campus also operates a company farm at the site.

The New Holland location of CNH employs about 900 workers.

people who are passionate about the products.”

CNH manufactures offroad equipment for agriculture and construction, everything from tractors to harvesting equipment, from balers to sprayers, from utility vehicles to implements. Every product CNH makes is designed to maximize human energies.

“We have 11,000 patents registered for products that we invented or innovated,” said Lowery, a resident of Willow Street. “Engineering influences all the products we make.”

“As far as agriculture goes, the farmer and rancher are our primary customers,” continued Lowery. “They use our products to feed and make food. Certainly, the focus is, ‘How do we help people be more efficient?’ Farmers and ranchers have to continue to be more efficient. Our challenge is to use technology to make machines that are more efficient and make people’s lives easier. We help farmers be more

“I think one of the keys to the evolution is that our pace never slows down for research and development,” said Lowery, “and one of those research and development centers is here in New Holland. It’s about a lot of talented people and having them in the right places. It’s about investing in sites like New Holland and bringing in

profitable.”

After Zimmerman’s initiatives were incorporated in 1903 as New Holland Machine Company, four Lancaster businessmen bought the company in 1940 and partnered with Ed Nolt, the inventor of a small square baler.

“The key innovation that made the site important was the square baler,” said Lowery. “That propelled New Holland as a company. It had immediate success and it had a global effect.”

During the 1990s, the New Holland enterprise became affiliated with both Ford and Fiat. In 1999, the company that is now CNH was created.

“To have a homegrown company - with local people who have supported it - make a global impact

is important to New Holland and Pennsylvania,” said Lowery. “For a lot of folks, from here and across Lancaster County, this company has been very important, and I think they want to see that success continue. There are so many people who have a connection, either people who worked here or whose parents worked here.”

The New Holland location of CNH operates a tour center and company store on site that caters to the curious. The center offers guided walking tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. and the company store is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the same days.

Library Posts Activities

Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, has posted its upcoming activities.

The library will hold a restaurant fundraiser in April. Fifteen percent of all sales on Tuesdays, April 21 and 28, at Sam’s Pizza, 2 E. State St., Quarryville, will benefit the library. The fundraiser applies to curbside pickups, takeouts, and dine-in meals, but it excludes alcohol.

In addition, the library will celebrate National Library Week from Sunday, April 19, to Saturday, April

SPRUCE UP

25. First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. The observance recognizes the ways that libraries bring people together, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning.

Special events during National Library Week will include Earth Day Fun with the Lancaster County Master Gardeners on April 21 at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will hear a story about

work immersion programs and three school-to-work programs, all secondary transition programs created to teach specific work skills and soft skills and prepare students for life. The programs are designed for students with intellectual and learning disabilities.

“We do a lot of modeling,” said Guatta. “Work ethic is difficult to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”

Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete.

Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. Among

the participating businesses are Moravian Manor Communities in Lititz, Masonic Village retirement community in Elizabethtown, Willow Valley Communities in Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.

One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.

“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school, and the goal is to get them employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these

students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”

Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs.

The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13.

Students are referred by their home school districts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.

“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful. Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”

Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and mentors from participating

business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.

Success breeds success.

“I see (students) come to us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”

One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 serves as a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.

“We talk about work worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

Retired Educator to Speak About Hurricane Agnes

The Solanco Historical Society will hold a program on Saturday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. at its archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. Robert Frick will present

“Hurricane Agnes and the Susquehanna Valley.” Frick served in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District for three years as a teacher and for 42 years as an administrator. The district’s first

assistant superintendent, he spent his last 15 years as superintendent of schools. Since retiring, he has been drawn into the world of American history. In addition to creating and presenting historical programs that are later rewritten as prose for publication, he serves as a guide for walking tours of historical sites in Lancaster. The program is free and open to the public.
