Solanco Students Advance to Odyssey of the Mind State Finals

On March 7, three teams of students from Solanco competed in the Eastern Central Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind tournament.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem-solving competition that asks teams of students to use their creativity to present a solution to a complex problem in the form of a live performance. Teams are graded on their creativity, risk-taking, and artistry. In addition, students are given a spontaneous problem that they have never seen before on the day of the competition.

All three teams, one elementary and two high school, performed well enough to advance to the state competition.

The students on the elementary-level team took second place in their problem, called “Taller Tales of John Jivery.” This problem

asked teams to create their own tall tale in the style of Paul Bunyan of Pecos Bill. The team took first place in the long-term and style portions of the scoring, with judges praising the team’s humorous performance and unique use of materials for the costumes. Team members included fourth-grader Henry Van Aulen and fifth-graders Gunnar Culberson, Cole Garver, Camden Hughes, Lea Morrison, Emma Testerman, and Ian Wimer.

One of the two high school teams also competed in the same problem. The team finished in second place, beating the rest of the crowded division in both the performance and artistry aspects of the competition. The team consisted of many experienced students, including senior Brooke Hiatt, juniors Rhiannon Groff and Brianna Harvey, sophomores Sara Dalrymple and Kieran Groff, and

New Holland Community Park is a great place to attend summer camp.

“New Holland is an amazing, welcoming community,” said Risa Paskoff, who’s been the executive director of Aaron’s Acres for 28 years. “(Borough officials) allow

us to use the pavilion, the pool, the park. It’s a wonderful partnership. We have community members coming up to us and saying, ‘It’s great to see you again.’ You’re breaking down barriers and you’re connecting to make a stronger community.” New Holland Community Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, will again provide the setting for Aaron’s Acres’ annual summer camp, the program that resulted in the founding of the organization dedicated to serving individuals

About 25 years ago, Joan Schaum learned about Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, through her employer, and she joined a team. She didn’t know that the organization would touch her personally in the future. Years later, her mother-in-law, Jackie Immel, moved in with Joan and her husband, Jeffrey, to their home in Columbia. Their motivation reflected a deep commitment to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence. Two guest curators will contribute signature sections to the exhibit: Leroy Hopkins Jr.

on the Black community in Lancaster at the time of the Revolution and Jess McPherson on the Indigenous community of Lancaster in the 18th century. Some of the loans featured in the exhibit include the doorway to George Ross’ Lancaster home, courtesy of LancasterHistory; Benjamin West’s portrait of Ann Wood Henry, courtesy of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel; and a 1780 letter Edward Hand wrote to his wife reacting to Benedict Arnold’s treason, courtesy of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The exhibit will run until Saturday, Oct. 31.

In addition to the new exhibit, Historic Rock Ford will host more than 60 events to celebrate America250, including lectures,

Fashion, and Untold Stories of the Revolution.

The America250 event series will highlight the culture and society of Colonial America and the early republic, the political events that made the revolution possible, and the military engagements from the Revolutionary War. The Historic Fashion series will explore the fashion of the 18th and early 19th centuries and how styles connect to the culture, economy, and society of Colonial America and the early republic.

The Untold Stories of the Revolution series will explore the stories of Revolutionary America that are rarely heard in discussions, including stories of ordinary soldiers, historically marginalized communities, religious communities, and women. All of these series will feature nationally recognized historians.

The America250 series will feature major celebratory events, including a Family Day event on Sunday, June 7, and a large living history event on Thursday and Friday, July 2 and 3.

Both events are free, but registration is requested.

“I am really proud of the programming our team has put together to celebrate America250,” stated executive director Christina McSherry. “All the programming is grounded in providing a variety of opportunities for our guests to engage with history and learn about the founding of our country and early America. We have events that will appeal to everyone, of all ages, throughout the season. From large celebratory events and concerts to lectures that investigate complex issues and events

that shaped our nation, to hands-on activities, living history, and classes, however you want to celebrate America250, you will find it at Historic Rock Ford this year.”

Aaron’s Acres

with disabilities and their families. This summer will mark the fourth year that the park has hosted Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp.

The summer camp program consists of three two-week sessions, from Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 26; from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 17; and from Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 31. The sessions offer full-day and half-day options.

Interested individuals can register at www. aaronsacres.org by Tuesday, March 31.

“The atmosphere is so positive,” said Paskoff. “We celebrate everything kids do - the kid who goes into the water, the kid who goes on the horse, the kid who does something they never did before. There’s this positivity. It’s a magical place because the staff is engaged with the kids and the kids are engaged with us.”

Among the activities and opportunities that campers and staff members can enjoy are daily swimming, music therapy,

arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a magician, a ventriloquist, nature activities and special theme days. The only activity not conducted at the park is the camp’s field trip to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center.

“I think the best part is seeing the staff and camper interactions,” said Paskoff. “I love seeing the smiles and joy. So many parents say they don’t see those smiles all the time. The last day of camp, the counselors and campers are crying, and it’s so powerful.”

Aaron’s Acres summer camp is designed for individuals between ages 5 and 21 with cognitive, behavior and medical disabilities. The camp mostly serves individuals from across Lancaster County, but also from Dauphin, Berks, Lebanon, Perry and Cumberland counties.

“They’re kids who are hoping to have fun and looking to do something over the summer,” said Paskoff. “Some may not have been accepted by other programs. You have

kids who want to be like everybody else, and at Aaron’s Acres, they can be like everybody else.”

“They’re developing their communication and social skills,” Paskoff continued.

“During the school year, they’re making strides in these areas, and we’re helping them to not regress.

They’re learning transition, and they’re having new experiences. There are so many advantages to summer camp.”

About 120 individuals are expected to attend the summer camps. Because Aaron’s Acres maintains 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff member-to-camper ratios, the program is limited in the number of participants it can accept.

Last year, the waiting list for Aaron’s Acres summer camps was about 90 kids.

“We don’t accept kids until we have the staff,” said Paskoff. “There’s a tremendous need for this type of program over the summer. The summer camp program has to happen for these families. We need the community

to help us make it happen. Parents can breathe when they know their kids are going to Aaron’s Acres.”

That interaction between counselors and campers can produce experiences that are both more enjoyable and more impactful.

“Because there’s that low ratio, kids get personal attention, and the child feels really safe and secure,” Paskoff said. “They get individual attention, and the counselors aren’t overwhelmed. There’s a lot of help, support and guidance. The staff is what makes this program special. If we don’t have the staff, we’re not doing it the Aaron’s Acres way.”

Aaron’s Acres, which recently moved its headquarters to 121 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, was formed from a summer camp conducted at the Lancaster Jewish Community Center in 1998. Today, the summer camp is one of nine programs Aaron’s Acres offers for individuals with disabilities between ages 5 and 40.

Message from the speaker: “I’ve been privileged to be part of the same body of belivers for the last 50 years. Growing with the same people for so long, it seems we focus on purging the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes. But do we purge the third thing - the pride of life - with the same vigor? 2000 years ago Jesus took 12 very prideful men and chipped away at them for 3 years.”

Relay For Life

living with the Schaums, Immel was diagnosed with several types of cancer.

The Schaums took Immel to the Lancaster Relay For Life, which was then a 24-hour event focused on walking laps around a track to raise funds for cancer research.

“She loved walking around the track,” Joan recalled. “When she couldn’t walk around the track anymore for the survivor lap, we put her in a wheelchair and pushed her around the track. She thought it was awesome that all these people were clapping for her and cheering her on, and she had no idea who they were.”

In 2016, Immel passed away from kidney failure. The loss prompted the Schaums to take action in Immel’s memory.

“We thought it would be nice to honor her, and she liked the Relay so much, we decided to start our own team,” Jeffrey said.

Recalling how much his mom liked the survivors’ dinner part of Relay For Life, he had an idea.

“We thought, ‘Why don’t we start a survivor breakfast?’” Jeffrey said. “Growing up, any time we had big events, my mom cooked. We thought, ‘What a great way to honor her by cooking for the cancer survivors and their caregivers.’”

They named their team The Breakfast Crew, and they served their first meal of pancakes, baked goods, meats and more in the tent at the Relay For Life site at Conestoga Valley High School.

“We were hoping we could bring in people who couldn’t come for the Friday night meal,” Jeffrey said, noting that at the time, Relay For Life took place from Friday to Saturday.

The Breakfast Crew features about 20 members, all from Joan and Jeffrey’s family.

“My brothers and sister help, and Joan’s family jumped right in, too,” Jeffrey said.

Over the years, the group has served hundreds of people, providing upwards of 150 servings at each meal.

“He never does anything little,” Joan said with affection toward her husband. “He was feeding the Relay For Life workers, the EMS

people on-site, anybody walking the track.”

After the pandemic, the format for Relay For Life changed. It became a one-day event that takes place in the afternoon and evening, negating the need for a breakfast, but the Schaums continued to serve the cause.

“The organizers asked us if we’d like to do a dinner instead, so we did,” Jeffrey said. “Last year, we made chicken potpie. This year, we’re doing homemade chicken corn soup and vegetable beef soup.”

They still call their team The Breakfast Crew, even though they are now serving dinner, and their contributions have extended beyond Relay day.

Each February, they help to host Taste of Relay, a potluck-style dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers. During the Christmas season, they organize a Breakfast with Santa event.

On Saturday, March 28, they’ll host breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Easter Egg Hunt, Breakfast & Spring Vendor Market. The event is open to the public and will take place at the Church of the

Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m., and the event will run until noon. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/4aUSP6V.

“Everything is donated for the meals we provide,” Joan said. “We don’t charge Relay for anything. Our family members all help out, even if they can’t be there the day of the meal. They’ll make something or donate something.”

The Schaums encourage others to get involved in Relay For Life, noting that the organization has numerous ways for people to volunteer, including helping with setup or cleanup at the Relay or volunteering with other activities throughout the year.

Although they didn’t realize how big a part Relay For Life would play in their lives when Joan joined that first team decades ago, they both say they can’t imagine not being involved with the cause.

Both emphasize how positive Relay For Life is, focusing on optimism and joy.

“It’s not a morbid event. It’s a celebration,” Joan said. “It’s about the mission to celebrate life, remember loved ones, fight back and offer hope.”

Both Joan and Jeffrey agree that tackling a cause like eradicating cancer is an overwhelming task, but they believe that everyone can make an
